Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Hossegor - La Centrale. The water is sitting at a very unusual 73°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
We open up on Saturday July 4th, but it’s slow going. Saturday morning shows a 4ft swell out of the WNW at 10 seconds, with a light cross-onshore breeze that’s messing with the surface. The energy is moderate at 261, but the tide might be a factor. Saturday afternoon gets worse with stronger wind and chop.
Sunday July 5th morning is the first real clean window. The swell has dropped to 2ft from the WNW, but the wind is dead calm – glassy as can be. The energy is lighter at 143, so it’s surfable but small and weak. Sunday afternoon gets chopped up again.
Monday the 6th morning is clean with offshore wind from the ENE at 10 km/h, but the swell is just 2ft from the NW with low energy at 73.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Tuesday July 7th morning through to Friday July 10th morning, it’s tiny—waves between 1ft and 2ft. Most of the time, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is pathetic. There are a few glassy moments, like Friday morning the 10th, but it’s just weak little 2ft slop.
Things pick up Saturday July 11th morning with the swell jumping to 5ft from the WNW, but the period is a short, dumpy 6 seconds, and the wind is onshore at 12 mph. The energy is moderate at 248, but the quality is poor. This continues into Sunday the 12th, where the swell builds to 5ft, then 6ft in the afternoon, with energy climbing into the strong range—452 in the morning, 566 in the afternoon. But again, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and it’s messy.
The best on offer is Sunday July 12th morning. The swell is 5ft from the WNW at a decent 10 seconds, with a light cross-shore wind from the north at only 3 mph. The energy is strong (452). It’s not perfect, but it’s the strongest, cleanest window in the whole run. The afternoon looks like light rain and stronger wind, so get it early. And crowds are sometimes an issue at La Centrale, so expect company.
Monday July 13th keeps the size at 6ft from the WNW, but it’s too onshore to be good—only for the diehards. Tuesday July 14th morning drops to 3ft and is glassy again, but the energy is weak (178).
After that, it’s a long, slow fizzle. From Wednesday July 15th right through to Sunday July 19th, the swell barely breaks 3ft. Winds are often onshore or cross-onshore. The energy drops into the weak range, and the conditions are poor. The last week of the forecast is a total washout.
To sum it up: the first few days have a clean moment or two, but the standout is the morning of Sunday July 12th. After that, it’s a lot of staring at the ocean and waiting for a change.
Rusty.
