The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and grim for focused surf around here. The models are showing a real dry spell, with only a tiny flicker of something possible way down the line.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, there’s basically nothing doing. The first hint of any real swell energy doesn’t show up until Sunday the 26th of July, and even then it’s messy. We’re talking about a solid gap of over a week with no worthwhile waves. The one spot we’ve got data for, Hossegor - La Centrale, is just sitting there waiting for something to happen.
The water is currently much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 75°F with a big 6°F anomaly. That’s pretty unusual, but it’s not making the waves any better.
We finally see a pulse of energy push through on Sunday the 26th. The morning shows a 4ft swell from the WNW with a period of 6 seconds, and it builds to 5ft by the afternoon. The combined energy hits 144 (moderate) in the morning and 190 (moderate) in the afternoon. But here’s the kicker – the wind is cross-onshore from the NW, it’s a short-period swell, and the report calls it “poor surf conditions.” This is a messy, wind-affected mess. Honestly, with that onshore wind and the size, this setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle session.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is a window on Monday the 27th of July. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the WNW with a slightly better period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 264 (moderate). The conditions are still “marginal,” but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the WSW, which is at least cleaner than the weekend. Keep in mind, 5ft is getting into the territory where it’s too big for total beginners, especially with that wind pushing it around.
After that, Tuesday the 28th has a brief moment of glassy conditions in the morning on a fading 3ft NW swell, but the energy is dropping (104). And Wednesday the 29th offers clean offshore winds from the East on a small 3ft NW swell, but it’s just not got any power.
Honestly, this is a tough outlook. Be patient. The swell window is so far away (16 days out) that it’s highly uncertain. For a spot like this, a blank run happens, but it never stays poor for long. Keep an eye on the charts.
Stay loose, and don’t get your hopes up. This is Rusty, signing off.
