The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, we’ve got one spot lighting up the board for this forecast period – Hossegor – La Centrale. The water’s sitting at 77°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, almost like a little summer bubble hanging around.
Right now, Friday morning the 21st of August is a write-off. There’s a 6ft WNW swell rolling in, but with a 9 mph cross-on wind and a combined energy of 684 (moderate wave energy), it’s just a choppy mess. The afternoon looks even worse.
Then we hit the first proper window. Saturday morning the 22nd of August is your go. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and we get a sweet 9 mph offshore easterly wind. The combined energy is 242 (moderate wave energy), and it’s flat-out glassy. This is a standout – clean, peeling lines for the more experienced crew at this expert break. Crowds are possible here, but with that kind of quality, you’ll want to be up early.
Sunday morning the 23rd of August is small and ordinary – 2ft from the NW and offshore wind, but the energy is weak at 61. Not much to write home about. The rest of that week fades into tiny, low-energy dribble, with nothing surfable really until Wednesday morning the 26th of August, when a 3ft glassy WNW swell shows up for a brief moment, but the energy is still weak at 78.
Now, here’s the next real pulse. Friday morning the 28th of August sees a solid 7ft WNW swell hit with a combined energy of 781 (moderate to strong wave energy). That’s pushing into expert territory for the beach break, but the wind is light and onshore at 3 mph, so it’s a bit of a gamble with tide. The afternoon gets cross-onshore and messy again.
Saturday the 29th of August holds around 7ft from the WNW, energy at 748, but wind shifts keep the conditions marginal. Not the cleanest.
The true second standout comes in on Sunday morning the 30th of August. The swell settles to a lovely 5ft from the NW, with a 9-second period, and an offshore ESE breeze at only 3 mph. Combined energy is 294 (moderate wave energy). This is clean, groomed, and punchy – perfect for the experienced surfer. Crowds are possible, but you’ll be smiling.
Monday morning the 31st of August is another glassy winner – 4ft from the WNW with no wind at all, energy at 247. Glassy and clean, a real treat.
After that, things fade again. Tuesday morning the 1st of September is small and clean at 4ft, but ordinary. A few pulses mid-week, like Wednesday the 2nd of September with 6ft, get ruined by onshore wind. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is glassy but only 4ft – surfable, but nothing special. The final week drops off into tiny, weak swells and poor conditions right through to Saturday the 5th of September.
Overall, you’ve got two standout mornings – Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 30th of August – with a couple of glassy Monday mornings in between. The rest is a lot of waiting. For the experts, it’s worth the paddle.
Rusty.
