The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Hossegor – La Centrale for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest: it’s mostly flat and messy, with a few tiny windows that might be worth a paddle. The water’s sitting at 76°F, which is a good 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a weird warm patch, but it doesn’t fix the lack of proper swell.
The first day, Sunday 19 July, has a tiny 0.3m NW groundswell with a 9-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore from the NNW at 12 mph, just choppy and poor. Combined energy is only 27 – weak. No surf to speak of.
Monday 20 is a write-off: 0.9m NNW windswell, 6-second period, onshore wind in the morning, cross-onshore in the afternoon. Energy 72–89, but the conditions are poor.
Tuesday 21 morning – now this is a little glimmer. The wind goes glassy, WNW at 3 mph, and there’s a 1.0m NNW swell, period 6 seconds, energy 91. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – it’s tiny, but at least it’s clean. That’s the best you’ll see for a few days. Afternoon goes back to cross-onshore chop.
Wednesday 22 to Friday 24: tiny, onshore or cross-onshore, energy dropping into the 20s and 30s. No good.
Saturday 25 and Sunday 26: swell picks up a fraction – 0.5m to 1.2m, but wind is onshore and strong (12 mph), energy creeps up to 122–123, but the surf is poor. Too much wind, not enough shape.
Monday 27: a weird one – morning has a 0.4m NW groundswell with an 11-second period, energy 97, but light cross-onshore. Still poor. Afternoon gets bigger but choppy.
Now Tuesday 28 morning – that’s your standout moment. The wind is dead calm, glassy, with a 0.9m NW swell, 9-second period, energy 153. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary” – but with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean and fun for a quick session. The swell direction is NW, not the optimum W, but it’s the best we’ve got. Afternoon gets a cross-shore breeze, so go early.
Wednesday 29 to Friday 31: energy ramps up – 268 to 368, with 1.0m to 1.3m NW swell, 10–11-second periods. But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s going to be lumpy and difficult. The size is manageable for experts, but the quality is poor. Not worth paddling out.
Saturday 1 August: back down to 0.7m–0.8m, cross-onshore, poor.
Sunday 2 August morning – another glimmer. Offshore wind from the east at 9 mph, 0.9m NW swell, 9-second period, energy 144. Clean, glassy offshore. That’s a good call for a morning session. Afternoon stays clean with a light cross-offshore breeze.
Monday 3 August: back to onshore and small.
Overall, this is a tough forecast. The only two windows worth your time are Tuesday 28 morning and Sunday 2 August morning. Both are small but clean. The rest is either too small, too choppy, or too onshore. Crowds are possible at La Centrale – it’s a famous spot, so expect a few heads even on a poor day. For experts, the bigger days (29–31 July) might offer something if you can handle the onshore chop, but it’s not
