The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Boucau’s got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s some real promise hiding in the second week if you can wait it out.
The water is running at 77°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, you’ll be feeling that difference.
Right now, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. For the next few days, it’s pretty much a write-off. Tuesday the 18th through Wednesday the 19th are tiny, with waves barely breaking 1ft to 2ft from the NW, and the energy is weak (29-33). The morning glass-offs are beautiful, but there’s just nothing to ride.
Thursday the 20th morning sees a pulse of 4ft NW swell with a decent 11-second period, and the energy jumps to a moderate 304. The wind is light cross-on from the SW, so it’s a bit messy. Still, that’s the first sign of life, but it’s only marginal.
Friday the 21st morning has a bit more size at 5ft from the NW, and the energy is strong at 475. The wind is light and onshore from the W, which isn't ideal, but the size is there.
Now, the first real standout. Saturday the 22nd morning. We’ve got a 4ft NW swell with a moderate energy of 241, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the ESE at just 6 mph. That’s going to tidy things up nicely. It’s a solid option for a surf, just be aware there might be a few others out there with the same idea.
Sunday the 23rd is clean and glassy in the afternoon, but the swell drops back to 2ft and the energy is weak (55). It’s a nice paddle but you’ll be scratching for waves.
We then hit a long, quiet stretch. From Monday the 24th all the way through to Friday the 28th, the surf is mostly poor or weak. There are a few clean moments on the 25th and 28th, but the swell is tiny or the wind is onshore. This is a real gap in quality.
Things start to look up again on Saturday the 29th. The morning has 4ft from the NW with clean offshore wind from the ESE. The energy is moderate at 196. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Sunday the 30th afternoon is a big step up. The swell pushes to 5ft from the NW, the energy is strong at 347, and we get a clean cross-offshore breeze from the NNE at 9 mph. This is looking like the best session of that weekend – clean, punchy waves.
Monday the 31st morning is glassy with 4ft from the NW. The energy is a solid 205. It’s clean, but the crowds might be a factor given it’s a good call.
Now, hold onto your board, because Tuesday the 1st of September is the absolute standout of the whole forecast. The afternoon session is looking incredible. A 5ft NW groundswell with a long 11-second period, the energy is very strong at 595, and the wind is dead glassy from the north. That’s the recipe for some proper, clean, powerful waves at Boucau. This is the one to circle on your calendar.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning still has size at 5ft with strong energy (540), but the wind swings to a cross-shore from the south, which will chop it up a bit. The afternoon gets messy with a strong cross-onshore wind.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. There’s a small clean window on the 22nd, but the real magic is waiting for the 1st of September. That afternoon glass-off with the long-period groundswell is the one.
Rusty.
