The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s on the cards for us.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are pretty patchy for us. We’ve got some swell pulses, but the winds are gonna make things tricky more often than not. Surf shows up, but you’ll need to be on your toes to catch the clean windows.
The first real chance of anything decent comes Thursday afternoon, the 20th of August. Trez Hir gets a solid 8ft swell out of the WNW with a 10-second period. That’s pumping a lot of energy through (1611). The catch is it’s cross-offshore with a 12 mph breeze, so it’ll be a bit lumpy but still surfable. Water temps are sitting at 63°, which is just about normal for this time of year.
Friday the 21st is your standout. You want to be in the water first thing Friday morning. We’ve got a 6ft WNW swell at 10 seconds, but the real story is a clean, true offshore wind out of the NW at just 9 mph. The wave energy is moderate (512), and the conditions are set to be glassy and clean. Friday afternoon stays clean too, with a moderate offshore from the NNW at 16 mph and a 5ft swell. For the whole 16-day window, Friday the 21st is the best bet on offer.
After that, it goes flat and messy for a long stretch. From Saturday the 22nd all the way through to the 25th, it’s really poor – small, weak surf with cross or onshore winds. There’s a little spike on Wednesday the 26th, but a fresh cross-onshore wind at 19 mph kills it. It’s just lumpy and messy.
We get another look on Thursday the 27th morning. The swell builds back to 6ft from the west with a 10-second period, and the wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the WSW at 9 mph. That’ll be clean again (515 energy), and definitely worth a paddle if you can sneak out. Thursday afternoon stays surfable but gets a bit windier.
The end of August and start of September is a real mixed bag. There’s some serious size on the 28th and 29th, with 10ft to 12ft swells. But the wind is howling – fresh to strong breezes – so for a spot like this, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s just too blown out for a clean ride.
We finally see the wind turn favourable again on the 1st of September. Tuesday morning brings a clean, moderate offshore from the NW at 16 mph, wrapping around a 4ft SSW swell. It’s not big, and the period is short (7 seconds), but it’ll be the cleanest we’ve seen in a while. The 2nd of September morning is another solid window: a 5ft WSW swell with a light cross-offshore breeze. Again, not a pumping day, but clean and rideable.
After that, it fades off again into the 4th with onshore winds and weak surf.
So, in a nutshell: Friday the 21st morning is the standout – clean offshore winds, solid chest-to-head-high surf, and good energy. Thursday the 27th morning is your second-best call. The rest is a waiting game with small windows of clean surf.
Rusty.
