The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening.
It’s a tough stretch ahead for Trez Hir. This spot rarely breaks, and the forecast shows why. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with barely any swell.
Starting Monday the 20th of July, the surf is tiny – about 0.7 ft to 1 ft from the WNW. The period is short to moderate, around 10-12 seconds, and the combined energy is very weak, between 16 and 44 (just a whisper). The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, with a moderate to fresh breeze, keeping things clean but with no real wave to ride. Thursday the 23rd has a glassy morning with the wind from the E at 3 mph, but again, the swell is a puny 1.0 ft and 9-second period, combined energy only 15 – it’s a flat calm lake, not a surf. This pattern of poor conditions continues right through until the end of July.
There’s a little hope on Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning shows a bump to 3 ft from the WNW with an 11-second period, and combined energy jumps to 211 (moderate wave energy). The wind is cross-off from the W at 12 mph, so it’s clean. But the surf is still described as poor, and it’s a long way off. The next day, Wednesday the 29th, the swell drops to zero, so that’s a dead end.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is on Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning has a 3 ft swell from the WNW, period 9 seconds, combined energy 113 (moderate), and the wind is cross-off from the N at only 3 mph – that’s a very light breeze, almost glassy, so it’ll be clean. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is the best we get in the whole 16-day window. The swell direction is WNW, which is fine for Trez Hir’s optimum from SSW, but not a perfect match. For a spot that rarely breaks, this is a notable chance to get a few small, clean ones. It’s the only time the score is not zero.
After that, Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th of August drop back to tiny, weak swell and poor conditions.
So, the honest truth: there’s almost nothing to work with here. A long, blank run of small, weak swell and poor surf. The only window worth a look is the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August for a chance at some clean, knee-high waves. It’s not exactly firing, but it’s the best of a very quiet bunch.
Rusty.
