The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. We’re looking at Trez Hir, and I gotta be straight with you, mate – this stretch is gonna be a real test of patience. There’s almost nothing worth paddling out for over the next week or so. We’ve got a long gap of flat, weak, or just plain messy conditions until things start to show a little life way down the line.
Starting off on Wednesday the 15th, there’s a tiny 1ft swell from the west, but it’s weak with only 30 units of energy and the wind is a messy cross-off. It’s clean on the surface, but there’s just no push. That theme sticks around through Thursday the 16th and into the weekend – swell stays between 0.7ft and 1ft. The water temperature is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll feel nice if you’re just floating around.
Friday morning the 17th has a bit of a window with clear skies and a light cross-off, but again, it’s ankle-snappers at best. Through Saturday and Sunday, the wind picks up, and by Sunday afternoon we’ve got a 25 mph cross-shore that’ll turn the place into a washing machine. Not worth it.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st bring a little hope – Tuesday morning actually goes glassy with a light easterly breeze, and the swell bumps to 1ft from the west-northwest. Still, with only 40 units of combined energy, it’s weak. The swell period is 10 seconds, so there’s some shape, but the size just isn’t there.
Things keep limping along until we hit a real standout window around Thursday the 24th of July. That afternoon, we get a 1.0ft west-northwest groundswell with a long 13-second period, and the wind goes fresh offshore from the north-northwest at 19 mph. The water will be glassy clean. Combine that with 41 units of energy – still moderate but the best we’ve seen – and you’ve got the first real chance at a clean little wave. It’s not big, but for Trez Hir, it’s the pick of the period.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th keep that trend going. Saturday afternoon has 2ft from the west with an 11-second period and clean offshore winds, pushing 58 units of energy. Sunday the 26th is similar: 2ft, 10-second period, and gentle offshore breezes. By Sunday afternoon, the energy climbs to 91 units, and while it’s still “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” it’s the best we’ve seen in over a week. That’s your window.
After that, we drop off again. Nothing really stands out until the very end of the month. On Wednesday the 30th of July, the swell finally pushes up to 4ft from the west-northwest, but the period drops to a short 6 seconds – that’s windswell, bumpy and weak. The energy hits 163 units, so there’s some water moving, but the short period means it’ll be lumpy and hard to link up. Thursday the 30th afternoon has 5ft and the period only gets to 7 seconds. The wind is cross-off, so it’ll be clean but fat and disappointing.
Honestly, the best bet across this whole 16-day stretch is the late July window. If you’re keen for some clean little peelers, aim for the 25th or 26th – mostly offshore winds and a little waist-high runner. The 30th is bigger, but only for the experienced crew who can deal with short-period mush.
Rusty.
