The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat about Trez Hir. The next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and honestly, it’s a waiting game. We’re starting with a long dry spell, so don’t suit up just yet.
The first surf worth talking about shows up on Thursday, August 27th. That morning, a solid 2.3m (8ft) SW swell rolls in, but it’s getting hammered by a 40 km/h (25 mph) cross-shore wind and messy chop. The energy is strong at 848, but conditions are poor. By Thursday afternoon, the swell holds at 2.2m (7ft) from the SW, and the energy jumps to 1408, but it’s still marginal with a strong cross-shore breeze. This is big, powerful, and messy – only for the experts, and even then, it’s a fight.
The best window opens on Friday, August 28th. The morning brings a 1.4m (5ft) W swell with clean conditions and a fresh cross-offshore breeze at 35 km/h (22 mph). The energy is 793 – moderate, but it’s clean. Then Friday afternoon, the swell jumps to 3.5m (12ft) from the WSW – that’s big, heavy, and with a combined energy of 1830, you’ve got serious power. The wind is a strong 40 km/h (25 mph) cross-offshore, so the waves are clean but charging. This is only for the experts; beginners, stay well out of the water.
Saturday, August 29th, is another standout. You’ve got a 2.5m (8ft) W swell with a moderate 25 km/h (16 mph) cross-offshore wind, making for clean conditions. Energy is 1639 – strong. The afternoon eases slightly to 2.1m (7ft) from the WNW, still clean. This is the pick of the week for the experienced crew.
After that, the swell drops off big time. The rest of the period into early September is mostly small, weak, and often blown out. There’s a fleeting moment on Sunday, September 6th, where the afternoon turns on with a 1.1m (4ft) WNW swell, offshore wind at 25 km/h (16 mph), and a combined energy of 354 – it’s clean and fun, but it’s a long way out. The Monday morning after that gets ruined by a strong onshore wind.
Overall, the only real standouts are Friday, August 28th, and Saturday, August 29th. If you’re an expert, the Friday afternoon with that 3.5m (12ft) WSW swell and clean conditions is the one to circle. The 2.5m (8ft) on Saturday is also a solid, cleaner option. For the rest of us, it’s a lot of waiting and watching. Trez Hir is a reef that rarely breaks, so when it does, it’s a treat, but this window is narrow and demanding.
Stay patient, and don’t get suckered by the small, choppy days.
Rusty.
