The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Trez Hir over the next couple of weeks.
We’re starting off a bit slow, but the middle of the week is where things start to shape up. The first real surf worth paddling for shows up on Wednesday the 19th of August. The water temp is 63°, which is about 1° cooler than the average for this time of year – not a big deal, just a little autumn nip in the water.
Wednesday morning is clean, with waves around 4ft from the WNW, coming in with a 10-second period. The wind is light and offshore from the NW, so the surface is glassy. The energy is moderate (309). The afternoon builds on that, with waves pushing to 5ft, still from the WNW, and the period bumping up to 11 seconds. Wind is offshore from the WNW, and the energy jumps to 470. This is the pick of the first few days – clean, punchy, and fun. Trez Hir is a fairly exposed spot, and it rarely breaks, so when it’s on, it’s a treat. Crowds are possible here, but on a Wednesday, you might have it mostly to yourself.
Thursday the 20th brings a bigger, more powerful swell, but the wind shifts cross-off. The morning sees 7ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the energy is up to 789. The afternoon is even bigger, same size and direction, but the period stretches to 10 seconds and the energy hits 1504 – that’s strong. This is expert territory for sure. That kind of energy at a beach break can be a bit wild, but if you’ve got the skills, the afternoon could be a standout.
Friday the 21st is still good, with the morning showing 5ft from the WNW, 9 seconds, and a light NNW breeze making it glassy. Energy is moderate at 460. The afternoon drops a bit to 5ft, and the wind freshens, but still cross-off. It’s a solid morning session.
Then things go quiet. From Saturday the 22nd onward, the surf drops right off – tiny waves, poor conditions, and messy wind. That flat spell runs all the way through to the end of August, with only a few small, weak swells that are barely surfable.
We get a pulse again on the 27th of August, but it’s a big one. Thursday morning shows 10ft from the west with a 9-second period and energy at 1533 – that’s massive, and only for experts. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not ideal. But the real standout of the entire forecast is Thursday afternoon on the 27th: 8ft from the west, 9-second period, and the wind goes offshore from the NW. The energy is still 977, and the conditions are clean and moderate offshore. This is the best session on offer – big, powerful, and clean. Only experts should be out there, but if you’re one of them, that afternoon is the one to circle.
After that, we get a few more small waves and messy conditions into early September, with a final decent-looking session on Wednesday the 2nd of September: 7ft from the SSW, 7-second period, with gentle offshore wind from the WNW. The energy is 549, and it’s clean. That’s a nice little finisher for the run.
So, bottom line: Wednesday the 19th is your fun, clean day for intermediates, and Thursday the 27th of August afternoon is the true standout for the big dogs. Don’t sleep on that one.
Rusty.
