The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at Trez Hir. Honestly, mate, the next couple of weeks are a real dry spell for any decent surf. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a grind, with a long stretch of nothing happening until the very end. The first real chance for a wave doesn’t show up until Saturday the 25th, and even then it’s tiny.
From the 16th of July through to the 24th, it’s a patch of tiny, weak swell with no energy. You’re looking at ankle-biters mostly around 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with periods all over the place but mostly short-period stuff. The combined energy stays low, usually between 6 and 46. It’s just not worth paddling out for. Even though the wind is often offshore or cross-off, there’s no push from the ocean. This break is a rare one as it is, and it’s living up to its name these days.
The gap is real. From the start of the forecast right through to the morning of July 25th, there’s absolutely nothing worth recommending. That’s over a week of dead flat or junk.
On Saturday afternoon, July 25th, we finally see a pulse. The forecast shows a 3 ft swell from the WNW with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 81. The wind is offshore from the NW, which is clean. But it’s still a weak, short-period wave, and the description says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so it’s not going to get your heart racing. Definitely not a standout.
The next morning, Sunday July 26th, is a bit better. The swell drops to 3 ft but the period is still 8 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the NNW. Energy is again 81. It’s clean, but the size and period are still small. The afternoon picks up a bit of energy to 119, but the swell drops to 2 ft with a 7-second period. It’s okay, but not special.
Then, the real highlight comes on Thursday morning, July 30th. This is the one. We’ve got a 7 ft swell from the WNW with a 12-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits 1281. The wind is gentle offshore from the NW. It’ll be clean and lined up. The forecaster says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s the standout for the whole forecast. Now, being 7 ft, it’s going to be too much for beginners, but for anyone with some experience, it’s going to be a ripper session. The longer period means it’ll have some punch and shape, and the offshore wind will keep the faces clean. The water temperature is about 64°, which is pretty normal for the time of year.
The afternoon of the 30th drops a little to 7 ft, still with a long 12-second period, but the wind goes cross-off from the West. It’s still surfable, but not as pristine as the morning.
The last day of the outlook, the 31st of July, still has size—7 ft from the WNW—but the period drops to 11 seconds and the wind goes cross-shore from the SW, chopping it up a bit. The energy is still high at 1370 in the morning, but the quality drops off. It’s a bigger, messier option.
Overall, if you’re hanging out for a wave, don’t bother with the first two weeks. But if you can wait, mark Thursday July 30th in your calendar. That morning session at Trez Hir is the only real standout. The crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might have some company, but with that much swell and clean conditions, it’s worth it.
