The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it for Trez Hir. The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of waiting around for the real action. There’s a big gap of very small, poor surf from the 22nd right through to the 25th, so don’t get your hopes up early on. The real juice starts to show up towards the end of the month, but we’ve got to get through the quiet spell first.
Wednesday the 19th kicks off with a modest 5 ft swell from the W, but it’s a short-period 6-second windswell, and the wind is a cross-off from the NNW at 15 mph. The energy is weak, only 307, and the water is a balmy 63°, which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year – about 1° below average. Not ideal, but it’s clean. Thursday the 20th sees a jump in size to 8 ft from the WNW, with a better 9-second period and moderate energy (1585). The wind holds cross-off from the W at 15 mph, but it’s still a bit too raw for a standout. Friday the 21st afternoon is the first real glimmer: 6 ft from the WNW, 8-second period, but the wind finally turns offshore from the WNW at 12 mph, giving us clean, workable lines. The energy is a solid 431.
Then it goes dead. From Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 25th, it’s tiny waves – nothing over 3 ft – with fresh, messy winds. That’s a solid four-day lull, so don’t bother checking the buoys.
Tuesday the 26th morning brings a bit of life back: 5 ft from the SW, 8-second period, with offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph. The energy is 483, and it’s clean. That’s the start of the turn.
Now, the real standouts are at the very end of the run. Sunday the 30th of August is the one to circle. The morning sees 7 ft from the W, 8-second period, with offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph. The energy jumps to 1368 – that’s a proper push. The surf report calls it excellent for experienced surfers. This is a big, powerful, clean swell, but at 7 ft, it’s already pushing into the “not for beginners” zone. The best session is the Monday the 31st morning: 15 ft from the WNW, a very long 12-second period, with offshore wind from the NW at 15 mph. The energy is massive at 5153. That’s a serious groundswell – it’s going to be big, clean, and powerful. That kind of long-period swell is best at a point or reef, not a beach break, as it can get straight and dumpy. Winds are offshore, so it’s going to be a sight to behold for experts only. The Tuesday the 1st of September morning is also a cracker: 13 ft from the WNW, 11-second period, offshore wind from the WNW at 15 mph, and energy at 3670. Again, expert territory.
Don’t bother with the 2nd and 3rd of September – the wind goes onshore and strong, ruining the swell.
But for the best on offer, it’s those two mornings: Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st. The Monday is the biggest and cleanest, but it’s massive. If you’re experienced and you’ve got a big-wave board, that’s the one. Trez Hir is a rare break, so don’t expect it to be firing all the time, but when it’s on, it’s on. Crowds are possible, so get there early.
Rusty.
