The Lowdown
Oi, Rusty here. Look, I'm gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We've got a real dry spell on the cards.
For the first week, from Saturday the 18th right through to Saturday the 25th of July, it's a total bust. We're talking knee-high dribble at best, with swell heights barely scraping 1 foot. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross or cross-off, and the few waves we do get are just poor. The combined energy is pathetic, barely hitting double digits. You're better off taking the board in for a repair or finding something else to do.
Then, things get a bit more interesting, but it's still not a sure thing. On Sunday the 26th of July, we get a spike of energy. The swell at Trez Hir jumps to 6 feet from the WNW, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is strong, hitting 476 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is a cross-off from the WSW, around 15-20 mph. That's a lot of power for a spot that *rarely breaks*, and it's a fairly exposed spot. For most of us, that's going to be a messy, blown-out mess. Honestly, with that much wind and a beach setup, it might be more interesting for the kite crew than us.
The better window looks like Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th. The swell drops to a more manageable 5 feet from the WNW, with the period still short at 9 seconds. The energy is still moderate (378 and 307). The wind is cross-off from the WSW and W. It's still only rated as "marginal" or "poor", but it's the cleanest we're going to get. The offshore wind on Wednesday the 29th from the NW is a positive sign, with 4-foot and 4-foot swell, but again, the energy is dropping. For a spot that's *rarely breaking*, it's a gamble, but if you're desperate, that Wednesday morning with the gentle offshore wind might be your best, and only, shot.
After that, it goes totally flat again from the 30th of July right through to the 2nd of August. There's a tiny blip on the 2nd of August with a 3-foot, 8-second swell from the WNW, but it's a long way off. Don't hold your breath.
So, the standout? There's no true standout. The absolute best of a bad bunch is the 5-foot swell on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th of July, with the clean conditions. Get on it if you're a solid intermediate, but don't expect much. It's a long wait for a very small window.
Rusty.
