The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at the surf outlook from now, starting on Thursday, the 20th of August. It’s a rough start, and honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for until the very end of the month. We’ve got a long dry spell ahead, so don’t get your hopes up for a quick fix. The first couple of days at Trez Hir are just messy—cross-off winds and lumpy conditions, with a score that’s as flat as a calm sea.
The energy picks up on Thursday the 20th, but it’s all wrong. Swell at 8 ft from WNW, period around 9-10 seconds, and combined energy hitting 864 to 979 (moderate energy), but the wind is a 16 mph cross-off, making it choppy. It’s a marginal call at best. By Friday the 21st, the swell drops to 6 ft from WNW, period up to 10 seconds, and offshore winds at 9 mph clean things up a little, yet the energy is still moderate at 568 to 446. Despite the clean face, the quality’s just not there for a proper session—rated a 2/5 for a reason, and the break rarely breaks, so it’s a gamble.
Then from Saturday the 22nd through to the following Wednesday, the 27th of August, it’s a total washout. Swell sizes drop to 0.7 ft to 7 ft, but the winds are cross, onshore, or cross-off, and the energy is weak (16 to 585), often with rain or storms. The water temp on Thursday morning was 63°F, which is about average for this time of year with a -1°F anomaly, not unusual. But the surf is poor, and there’s no reason to get wet.
A bit of a breather on Friday the 28th: morning offshore wind at 12 mph, swell 7 ft from W, period 8 seconds, with clean conditions and moderate energy (476). Still, the break rarely works, and the waves aren’t standing out. It’s not the day to call in sick for.
Now, hold on—Sunday the 30th of August is where it gets interesting, but you’ll need to be patient. The swell hits 12 ft from WNW, period 10 seconds, with a massive combined energy of 2210 (very strong). The wind is light at 6 mph cross-off, keeping it clean. This is the standout for experienced surfers only. Over 8 ft means it’s for experts, and the WNW direction matches the optimum SSW direction? Not perfect, but the offshore flow and long-period lines mean Trez Hir could offer some heavy, peeling rights if it lines up. The break is exposed fairly and rarely breaks, so timing’s everything. Crowds are sometimes expected, but with this size, it’ll thin out.
Monday the 31st turns messy again with strong onshore winds and lumpy conditions, energy dropping to 443. Then Tuesday the 1st of September sees a cross-off wind but a smaller 7 ft swell from WSW, energy at 599 (moderate). It’s marginal.
The real potential lies on Wednesday the 2nd of September: morning swell 12 ft from WNW, period 11 seconds, combined energy at 2486 (very strong), with light cross-off winds. This is a massive groundswell, but the long period means it’ll push straight at beach breaks—Trez Hir being a reef or point setup would handle it better, but without a specific break type here, it’s a caveat. Still, for experts, it’s a day worth watching.
Thursday the 3rd fades, but Friday the 4th of September has the biggest highlight: glassy conditions in the morning, with 3 mph winds, and a 10 ft swell from W, period 9 seconds, combined energy at 1145 (strong). This is clean, powerful, and with the break rarely showing, it could be a gem. The swell direction is close to the optimum SSW, so the waves should be solid. Only experienced surfers should bother, and crowds might gather if the word gets out.
To sum up: the best on offer is Sunday the 30th of August for the first big pulse, and then Friday the 4th of September for the glassy, clean peak. Everything else is a wait-and-see. Keep an eye on the skies.
Rusty.
