The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Trez Hir.
Right off the bat, I gotta tell you – it’s a quiet stretch ahead. The first week and a half of this 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the energy is weak (often under 50). You’re looking at a long gap from now until around the 24th of July before anything even starts to look like a surfable wave. Trez Hir is a spot that rarely breaks, and this period shows exactly why.
We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands, but things do finally start to change towards the end of the month. The first real glimmer of hope comes on the 24th of July. The swell picks up to a modest 4ft from the WNW, with a period of 12-13 seconds – that’s some proper groundswell energy. The combined energy jumps to 1001, which is a serious step up from the flat spell. The wind on Friday afternoon turns cross-offshore from the NNE, and the forecast calls for clean conditions. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the first rideable surf in over a week.
The real standout, the one I’d circle on the calendar, is the 25th of July. Saturday morning sees a solid 7ft swell from the west, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is a strong 1115. By Saturday afternoon, it’s pumping at 8ft out of the west, with 1161 energy. Winds are offshore from the north, keeping it clean. That’s gonna be the best of the lot, but keep in mind, at 8ft this is expert territory. It’s a big, powerful wave for a spot that’s already inconsistent, so only the experienced crew should be out there. Crowds are possible, but with those conditions, they’ll be earned.
The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can probably get away with a thinner suit.
The 27th of July also has some size, 8-8ft, but the wind is a bit more messy, making it a less clean option than the 25th. The 28th and 29th settle back down to a more manageable 5-7ft with clean offshore winds from the NW, offering some decent follow-up sessions.
So, in short, it’s a long wait for a short window of real quality. If you’re looking for a proper session, the 25th is your best bet, but it’s for experts only. The 24th and 28th are the safer, more moderate options.
Rusty.
