The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Trez Hir over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – this one’s a tough read.
We’re looking at a long, dry spell to start. For the first week or so, the surf is small and the wind is a real pest. It’s not until the tail end of the month that we see something worth getting out of bed for, and even then, it’s got its own weirdness.
The Overall Pattern
Right now, through to the end of August, Trez Hir is pretty much a no-go. We’ve got waves in the 1.0 ft to 2 ft range, and the wind is either onshore or cross-shore, making a mess of things. The combined energy is weak, barely hitting 100 (55-99). It’s a total write-off for a surfer. The water is sitting at 63°, which is about 0.9° cooler than normal for this time of year – nothing to write home about, just a bit of a nip.
This blank run stretches from Saturday the 22nd right through to the morning of Friday the 28th. That’s nearly a week of nothing.
The First Signs of Life
Come Friday the 28th of August, the swell finally starts to show some muscle, but it’s a rough one. We’re looking at 8 ft-10 ft swells from the WSW and W, with a period of 8-9 seconds. The combined energy jumps up to 998-1308, which is strong. But here’s the catch – the wind is a strong offshore (31 mph on Friday morning, 25 mph in the afternoon). That’s clean, sure, but it’s going to be a battle. That’s expert-only territory at Trez Hir, and even then, it’s going to be heavy and testing. Not a beginner’s wave.
The Only Real Standout
If you’re looking for a window, the best bet is Saturday the 29th of August. The morning session is the pick. We’ve got a 7 ft swell from the WNW, period around 8 seconds, with a moderate cross-offshore breeze (16 mph) from the west. The combined energy is 565 – moderate to strong. It’s considered marginal by the numbers, but in the context of this whole forecast, it’s the cleanest we’ll see. The afternoon drops to 5 ft, but still a decent option. The wind stays cross-off, so it’ll be clean. Crowds are possible – Trez Hir can get busy, but with this being a rare break, it might be a quiet one.
The Rest of the Second Week
Sunday the 30th of August offers a similar morning: 6 ft, clean, cross-off, but the afternoon turns ugly with a strong onshore. Monday the 31st gives us 5 ft-6 ft waves, clean, but nothing special. The first week of September looks ordinary again – small, messy, or just a repeat of the same pattern. The only other flicker of hope is on Friday the 4th of September, with a 5 ft swell from the WNW and a 12 mph offshore wind. That’s a clean, fun-sized wave, but it’s a low-energy swell (278).
The Verdict
Honestly, if you’re desperate, Saturday the 29th of August morning is your best shot. It’s the only time where the size, wind, and cleanliness line up. Everything else is either too big, too small, too windy, or just plain poor. Trez Hir is a rare break, and it’s living up to its name this period.
Rusty.
