The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down for Porsmilin – a sandbar break that’s fairly exposed to the swell and likes it coming from the southwest. Water temp is about 64°F, right around normal for this time of year.
First week is a total bummer. From Sunday the 23rd of August through the end of the month, it’s pretty much flat and poor. Swell is tiny – under 2ft – with short periods and weak energy. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th have some clean stretches but nothing to get excited about. Tuesday the 25th sees a little more energy (moderate energy values around 118 to 173), but the wind is onshore or cross-on, so it’s messy.
Things pick up in size Thursday the 27th of August – 6ft swell with moderate energy (597), but it’s onshore and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. Not a good combo. Friday the 28th gets bigger – 8ft to 8ft – with strong energy (1484), but the wind is a near-gale cross-on, so it’s blown out. That’s more of a kite-surfing day. Saturday the 29th is even bigger – 12ft swell with strong energy (1915) – but again, fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy. Expert territory size-wise, but the wind kills it.
Sunday the 30th drops back to 5ft, moderate energy (373), but still cross-on and choppy. Not your day.
Monday the 31st of August is the first real glimmer – 3ft from the northwest, period 7 seconds, moderate energy (104), and light cross-off winds from the NNW. It’s clean, but only just surfable – a 1 out of 10. Better than nothing, but barely.
Then another quiet patch: Tuesday the 1st of September and Wednesday the 2nd are tiny again – 1ft to 1ft – with weak energy (23 to 41). Not worth a paddle.
The real standout – the only one – is Sunday the 6th of September. Morning sees 12ft from the WNW with a 12-second period, strong energy (2864). The afternoon is the same size but with 11-second period and strong energy (3118). The wind is cross-shore, moderate breeze, and the wave comment says “wind and tide favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break.” That’s a big, powerful groundswell – very long period – which can make things wall up at a beach break, but it could still produce some solid sets. This is strictly for experts – 12ft is serious. But it’s the best on offer in the whole 16-day window. Just remember it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.
Monday the 7th of September is still huge – 12ft to 13ft, with the afternoon hitting an 18-second period and very strong energy (9368). But the wind is strong cross-shore and messy, so it’s blown out.
So here’s the bottom line: the first week is a washout. There’s a long gap of poor to no surf from the 23rd of August until the 31st, with only a tiny clean window on the 31st. Another gap until the 4th of September, which is blown out. The only real hope is Sunday the 6th of September – big, powerful, and clean-ish, but expert-only. If you’re not an expert, you’re better off waiting for the next swell window.
Forecasts can change, so stay tuned.
