The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Porsmilin. Gotta be honest with you, the start is a bit of a slow cooker, but there’s one morning that’s looking like a proper session if you’ve got the nerve.
The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday, the 18th, is a total no-go with weak, short-period windswell and cross-onshore junk. The combined energy is just 62 (weak), and the water is sitting at 64°F, which is about standard for this time of year, so nothing odd there. Wednesday and Thursday the 19th and 20th show some size, but the wind and tide are messing with the quality.
Friday morning, the 21st of August, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell picks up to 5ft out of the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes light and cross-offshore from the NNW. That’s a clean window. The combined energy is 460 (moderate), and it’s a sandbar setup, so it’ll be offering some decent, rideable waves. It’s going to be a good session, but not the standout.
The real standout, and I mean the one to circle on your calendar, is the morning of Thursday, the 27th of August. The swell jumps to a solid 10ft out of the west with a 9-second period, driving a massive combined energy of 1533 (strong). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the east, keeping the surface clean. But listen, this is big. 10ft is expert territory. This is not for the faint of heart or the weekend warrior. The period is 9 seconds, which is a bit short for that size, so expect some pitching, powerful walls. The sandbar will handle it, but you better know what you’re doing. This is the best on offer, no question.
After that, the surf drops off quickly. Friday the 28th gets messy with onshore wind, and the following days are small and weak. The end of the month and into September is flat to tiny, with a lot of poor surf conditions and cross-onshore wind. There’s a long gap of nothing really worthwhile from the 29th of August right through the 2nd of September.
So, to sum it up: the dawn patrol on Friday the 21st is a nice, clean day for the intermediates. But the big dog is the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. That’s a big, clean swell, but it’s only for the experienced crew.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
