The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a single spot on the radar for this 16-day run: Porsmilin. Let’s break it down.
The opening stretch is a bit of a write-off. Tuesday the 18th is a non-starter with small, weak, cross-on wind chop. Hang tight, because the real window opens up Wednesday morning, the 19th. That’s the standout. We’re looking at a glassy, calm morning with a solid 4ft groundswell rolling in from the WNW. The swell period is a proper 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (302). The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing weird. It’s small enough for intermediates but will have some push. That glassy wind is a major positive—clean faces for the taking.
Wednesday afternoon, the wind goes cross-shore and the swell bumps up to 5ft, but the energy goes strong (509) and the breeze starts to crinkle the surface. Thursday the 20th sees the swell pushing 7ft in the morning with strong energy (895), but it’s a messy cross-shore wind. That’s getting into the range where beginners will struggle. The weekend from the 22nd onwards drops off hard. The swell fades to 2ft and under, even with offshore winds, it’s just too small to get excited about. There’s a long gap of poor conditions from the 22nd right through to the 26th.
We get a little bump around the 27th with 4ft WNW swell, but the wind is messy and the period is a short 7 seconds, so the quality won’t be there. The very end of the run, on the 1st of September, brings a big pulse: 10ft WNW swell with a very long 12-second period from a groundswell. The energy is strong (2383), but the wind is onshore, and that size is only for experts. This is a promising but less certain long-range possibility.
Best bet: hit the Wednesday morning, 19th of August, at Porsmilin. It’s not a big session, but it will be clean and fun.
Rusty.
