The Lowdown
Alright folks, let's talk about Porsmilin. The next couple of weeks are a proper mixed bag. We're looking at a long stretch of flat, small conditions to start, then a pulse of decent swell arrives late in the month, but it's not without its quirks. The swell direction is mostly from the west-northwest, which isn't the ideal south-west for this sandbar, so we'll have to work with what we get.
The first week is pretty much a write-off. From Saturday 18 July right through to Sunday 26 July, there's barely a ripple. We're talking tiny waves, 0.2m to 0.4m at best, with cross-off or onshore winds and very low energy. Combined energy readings are in the teens to low twenties – weak stuff. Unless you're happy with a flat spell, don't bother paddling out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Then things start to wake up. On Monday 27 July, the swell nudges up to 1.9m from the west-northwest, with period around 8 seconds and energy jumping to 831 – that's strong. The wind is cross-off from the west-northwest, so it's rideable but a bit lumpy. It's a marginal day, but it's the first sign of life. The 1.9m size is getting into intermediate territory, maybe a bit much for beginners.
The standout session looks to be Tuesday 28 July morning. Swell hits 2.2m from the same west-northwest direction, period 9 seconds, and combined energy is a hefty 1264 – that's strong to very strong wave energy. The wind is cross-off from the northwest at 20 km/h, so conditions are reasonably clean. But remember, 2.2m is pushing into expert-only territory, and the swell direction isn't ideal for Porsmilin's optimum. Still, if you're experienced and hungry, this is the best size on offer. Expect some crowds as it's a popular spot.
Wednesday 29 July morning is another solid option. Swell drops to 1.5m from the west-northwest, period 10 seconds, energy 427 – moderate. The wind is much lighter, cross-off from the north-northwest at only 10 km/h, so the surface will be cleaner. This is a more manageable size for intermediates, and the longer period gives better shaped waves. Definitely worth a look.
After that, the swell fades quickly. Thursday 30 July morning has 0.9m, period 8 seconds, energy 145, but with offshore winds from the north-northeast at 25 km/h – that's clean but small. Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August are tiny again. Then Sunday 2 August morning shows a small pulse of 0.9m from the west-northwest, period 6 seconds (short period), energy 112, with gentle offshore winds. It's surfable but ordinary.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a
