Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Overall, we’re looking at a pretty quiet start for Porsmilin. The first week and a half is mostly small, weak, and uninspiring, with a couple of rare windows of clean conditions. The real talking point is a spike of much bigger swell right at the end of the forecast period, but it comes with some serious wind caveats.
The first morning that’s actually worth a mention is Sunday morning, July 5th. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell rolling in from the west, with a light north wind blowing offshore. That’s clean, but it’s weak. The combined energy is only 154, so it’s very weak. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about. This is a session for the log or the foiler, not for getting a proper pit.
Monday morning, July 6th is a little better. The swell is 3ft from the west-northwest, and the wind is glassy out of the east-northeast at 6 mph. That’s proper clean. The wave energy is still moderate at 112, but it’s surfable. It’s a small, clean, weak window. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it won’t be a zoo.
After that, it’s a long, dry spell. From Tuesday, July 7th right through to Wednesday, July 15th, the scores are all poor. The wind is either too strong, cross-off, or onshore, and the swell is constantly under 3ft. There’s a solid 10-day gap here where I wouldn’t bother paddling out unless you’re desperate. It’s just not worth it.
Thursday morning, July 16th offers a reprieve. The wind goes glassy out of the southwest, and we’ve got a 2ft west-northwest swell. The energy is 107, still weak. It looks clean, but again, it’s very small. A decent morning for a longboard cruise.
Now, the standout. Sunday, July 19th is where things get interesting. Morning sees a 7ft swell from the southwest, period of 7 seconds (short period), and the combined energy is 532 – that’s moderate-to-strong wave energy. The wind is cross-shore from the west-northwest at 9 mph, so it’ll be a bit chopped. This is a big step up in size, but it’s too big for beginners. The afternoon gets even bigger: 10ft from the southwest, period 9 seconds, and the energy jumps to 1201 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is cross-shore from the west at 12 mph, which is stronger. This is expert-only territory. The swell direction is southwest, which matches the guidance optimum of SW, so the setup is right. But the wind is not ideal. It’s a messy, powerful option for the experienced crew. The crowds are likely, so be ready for that.
Monday morning, July 20th is a drop-off. Still a solid 6ft from the west, period 8 seconds, with cross-shore wind. The energy is 371. It’s surfable but still a bit messy. Not a standout.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Sunday, July 19th. The morning is the biggest clean-ish window, but the afternoon is the biggest swell of the whole forecast. If you’re an expert and don’t mind a bit of chop, that’s your day. The glassy mornings of July 6th and July 16th are the only other real clean windows, but they’re tiny.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on that big Sunday swell. Rusty out.
