The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf ahead for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the first few days are pretty ordinary. We’ve got some swell on the way Wednesday and Thursday, but the wind is crossing it up, and the waves are going to be a bit of a mess. There’s a decent amount of energy out there – around 1085 to 1631 – but it’s not going to be clean. You’ll see waves in the 5ft to 8ft range, but with that cross-shore breeze, it’s going to be chopped up and hard to enjoy. It’s not a total loss, but it’s not a session you’d write home about.
Then we hit a real flat spell. From Friday the 21st right through to about the 25th, the swell drops right out. You’re looking at waves between 1ft and 4ft, and honestly, most of it is just too small to bother with. There’s a period of a few days where it’s nearly flat – you’d be better off doing anything else. The energy readings are real weak, in the 20s and 40s, so it’s just not happening.
The first real glimmer of something comes on Tuesday the 25th. The swell pops back up a touch to 2ft with a nice 11-second period, and the wind is light and cross-offshore. It’s clean, but it’s still pretty small. Probably not worth getting too excited about, but if you’re desperate, that morning session is the pick of an otherwise poor stretch.
The middle of the week gets messy again – some onshore wind and rain mucking things up. But here’s where things start to turn around.
Now, for the standout. The end of the month is where you want to be. Saturday the 29th afternoon and Sunday the 30th morning are looking like the best on offer. The swell is a solid 6ft and 5ft, coming from the WNW with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate, around 424 to 453, and the wind turns cross-offshore or light and glassy. That means the waves are going to be clean, lined up, and with that sandbar at Porsmilin (Finistère), it should be a proper fun session. The swell direction is aligned with what this break likes, so the shape should be there. This is the one to point the car at.
Following that, Monday the 31st also looks promising. The morning has a 5ft swell with light cross-offshore winds and clean conditions. Another solid day.
Going into the first week of September, things get more uncertain. There’s a pulse of energy on the 1st – an 8ft swell in the morning, but the wind is cross-onshore, which is a shame. It might be a bit lumpy considering the size. After that, the forecast gets shaky, with some onshore breezes and smaller swells. The second week is a lot less defined; it’s all a bit "wait and see."
The water temperature is pretty much average for the time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit, just the usual.
For the best of it, that Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning is your window. It’s not huge, but it’s clean, and that’s what matters. Be patient, skip the junk, and get on it when the wind cleans up.
Rusty.
