The Lowdown
Right, let’s be honest from the start – it’s gonna be a lean run here at Porsmilin for a good while. The entire 16-day window is basically one long dry spell for decent waves. We’re looking at a proper gap in the action. The first real whisper of anything comes on September 3rd, and even then it’s nothing to write home about.
For the first week and a half, it’s all small, wind-affected slop. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th offer tiny 1ft to 2ft SW and SE swells with moderate cross-offshore breezes, so the surface might be clean, but there’s no push. The combined energy is weak, between 26 and 80 (weak). Tuesday the 25th sees a jump to 2ft from the WNW, but it’s blown out with onshore wind. The energy climbs to 124 (moderate), but the quality is rubbish. The whole run through to the end of August is plagued by poor conditions – onshore winds, lumpy cross-onshore chop, and messy surf. On the 27th, a 7ft SW swell rolls in with strong energy (782 to 1246), but it’s accompanied by stormy winds and onshore conditions – not for the faint-hearted, and really only for experts if you’re desperate. By the 28th, it gets wild – a 10ft WSW swell with a combined energy of 3992 (very strong) but with a fresh cross-onshore wind at 22 mph creating lumpy, messy conditions. That setup is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We finally get a tiny window on Thursday, September 3rd. The morning shows a 3ft NW groundswell (9-second period) with glassy conditions and a light WSW breeze. The combined energy is 154 (moderate). For the first time, the report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – and that’s the best we get. It’s the only standout, and it’s barely a standout. This break is a sandbar that’s fairly consistent, but in this stretch, it’s just not happening. The afternoon on the 3rd turns cross-onshore, ruining it. After that, it’s back to lumpy, onshore wind and building swell again, with no quality.
So, the only chance to wet a line is the morning of September 3rd. It’s not much, but it’s all we’ve got. The water is sitting around 64°F, which is about average for the time of year. For everything else, you’re better off waiting for the next proper swell.
