The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. I’m looking at the only spot that’s come up with a recommendation, and it’s Porsmilin – a sandbar setup that’s fairly consistent. The water temperature is running at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year.
To be straight with you, the first week and a bit is a write-off. From Tuesday the 14th all the way through to Friday the 24th of July, the surf is tiny – nothing above 3ft – and the combined wave energy is mostly weak, with values sitting between 19 and 109. The wave comment across that whole stretch is “poor surf conditions,” so there’s no real reason to get wet. You’d be better off finding something else to do.
Now, things start to look a bit more interesting around Saturday the 25th of July. The morning brings a jump in swell to 5ft from the WNW, with a period of 12 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy hits 618, which is moderate. The wind is light and cross-shore, so the surface should be clean with just a few small ripples. This is the standout window in the whole forecast, but it’s only a marginal call – the guidance flagged it as a 1 out of 10, so don’t plan your life around it. The swell direction is a good match for the break’s optimum from the SW.
After that, Sunday the 26th stays similar at 5ft to 6ft from the WNW, but the wind turns cross-shore and a bit stronger, which will put a cross-chop on the face. The wave energy is still moderate. Then Monday the 27th sees the swell push over 7ft – up to 7ft from the WNW – but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’ll be choppy and messy. The energy is strong (842 to 942), but for most surfers, that’s not going to be fun paddling into.
Into the following days, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th of July, the swell stays in the 6ft to 8ft range with onshore winds from the south-west and south-south-west. The energy remains strong, but the conditions are described as poor, so unless you’re an expert looking for a challenge in lumpy water, give it a miss. For a beach break like this, the longer-period groundswell might make it wall up a bit straight, and with the wind howling onshore, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, the honest call here is that the only real glimmer of hope is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July at Porsmilin. The rest of the 16-day run is either flat or ugly. That’s a long gap – over a week with nothing to recommend – but it’s one of those stretches where the forecasts can shift, so keep an eye out.
