Alright, let’s break this down.
Looking at the next couple of weeks at Porsmilin, it’s a bit of a frustrating picture. There’s surf on offer, but nothing’s really firing for any length of time. There’s a long gap in the middle where things just flatline, and the biggest swell shows up too messy to enjoy.
We kick off on Monday the 6th of July morning with a small 3ft swell from the WNW and glassy conditions. It’s surfable but pretty ordinary, with combined wave energy at a weak 107. That’s about as good as it gets for a while, which isn’t saying much. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th stay tiny, with heights around 2ft. Wednesday afternoon does see a bit of offshore wind from the N at 12 mph, and the period stretches to 10 seconds, giving the waves a bit more shape, but the energy is still low (123). It’s a clean little wave, but nothing to get excited about.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th are similar – small WNW swells, with Friday morning bumping up to 4ft and combined energy of 249. That’s the most energy we’ve seen so far, and with a 9-second period and offshore N winds at 9 mph, it’s the best of a mediocre bunch. The swell direction from the WNW is a decent match for Porsmilin’s optimum SW direction, but not perfect.
From Saturday the 11th right through to Wednesday the 15th, the surf drops off a cliff. Heights hover between 1ft and 3ft, but the energy is weak, and most days are rated as poor. There’s a real dead run here for about 5 days – not worth paddling out for.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th stay poor, with small, short-period windswell and cross-onshore winds making for choppy conditions. Nothing doing.
Saturday the 18th stays messy, with a cross-shore wind and a weak 4ft swell at 6 seconds – just a bump with no power.
Then on Sunday the 19th of July morning, we get a bit of a pulse. Swell height hits 5ft from the WNW, period drops to 7 seconds, but combined energy is 197. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the NW at 6 mph, so it’ll be clean. The waves will be a bit fat and soft with that short period, but it’s the cleanest looking session in a while. Still, nothing special.
Finally, Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st see the biggest swell of the period – 6ft to 7ft, with combined energy jumping to 343 and 488. That’s strong energy. But the wind is onshore or cross-shore and strong (9-16 mph), making for blown-out, messy conditions. At over 5ft, this is too big for beginners, and with the poor wind, it’s really only going to appeal to experienced surfers who don’t mind a battle with chop. The 8-second period means it’s a windswell, not a clean groundswell. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
The best on offer is the Friday morning on the 10th of July. A 4ft WNW swell with offshore N winds at 9 mph, clean conditions, and moderate energy (249). It’s not a standout by any means, but it’s the most enjoyable session in an otherwise flat or messy forecast.
