The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, giving you the straight talk on the next couple of weeks. It’s a rough patch, no two ways about it. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing good on the horizon.
Right now and for the next few days, it’s pretty grim. The water temp at Porsmilin is about 64°, which is average for this time of year, so you won’t freeze, but that’s the only bright spot. The combined swell energy is weak, down in the 80-130 range, with tiny waves under 3 ft. There’s a slight window on Saturday, August 22nd, with a 3 ft NW swell, 8-second period, and a light ENE cross-off breeze that’ll keep things clean. But the wave quality is poor – just barely surfable in a very average way. That’s the only hint of a wave for a long while.
From Sunday, August 23rd, right through the end of the month, it’s a dead zone. Wave heights are mostly under 2 ft, winds are either cross-off or cross-on, and it’s just not happening. The combined energy barely hits 100. It’s a total blank.
We finally see some size build up around Wednesday, August 26th, but the wind is onshore and choppy. By Thursday, August 27th, the swell jumps to 8 ft from the SW with a 9-second period, giving us a solid 843 combined energy – that’s moderate to strong. But it comes with a risk of thunderstorms and a strong cross-onshore wind. It’s lumpy and messy. Friday, August 28th, is even bigger, with 8 ft to 10 ft, WSW swell, and near-gale cross-onshore winds at 31 mph. That’s blown out, dangerous, and for experts only. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The first week of September doesn’t offer much relief. There’s a small uptick in quality on Friday, September 4th, with a 5 ft WNW swell, 8-second period, and a cross-off NW breeze at 12 mph. The combined energy is 278, so moderate. It’s rated as marginal by the end of the afternoon, but it’s the cleanest we get in weeks. Still, not a standout.
Then on Saturday, September 5th, we get a big pulse: 7 ft from the WNW with a long 11-second period. The combined energy is 1116 – strong. But the wind is strong onshore from the SSW at 15 to 28 mph, so it’s a complete washout. The long period could make it break too straight at this sandbar, so it’s not the one.
Here’s the bottom line: there is no true standout in this entire 16-day window. The best of a bad bunch is probably Saturday morning, August 22nd, with clean 3 ft surf and light wind. If you’re desperate, try Friday afternoon, September 4th. Otherwise, we’re looking at a blank run. This area can go flat like this, so keep the faith – forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
