The Lowdown
Alright, let's have a look at what’s coming up for Porsmilin.
Honestly, mate, the next week or so is pretty grim. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands, with hardly any surf worth paddling out for. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn't show up until Thursday the 27th of August, and even then it’s a messy, blown-out affair. The wait is on.
For the Saturday morning of the 22nd of August, there’s a tiny bit of swell – about 3 ft from the NW with a short 8-second period. The wave energy is weak (130). It’s clean with a light cross-off breeze, but it’s just too ordinary to get excited about. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is about average for the time of year.
Moving through the week, from Saturday afternoon right through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s a total bust. We’re talking flat spell after flat spell, with onshore winds and messy conditions. Not a single session on the cards.
Then we get a pulse of energy on Thursday the 27th of August. The swell jumps up to 8 ft from the WSW, but with a short 10-second period for the morning and only 8-seconds in the afternoon. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, making for a lumpy cross-chop. The combined energy reading is 1932, which is moderate, but the quality is poor. It’s big, but it’s not clean. Definitely not for beginners, and not really for anyone wanting a good wave.
Friday the 28th of August is a different story, but not a good one for paddling. The swell is massive – 16 ft from the WSW and W, with a 10-second period. The wave energy readings are 4762 and 5265, which is very strong. The wind is a fresh cross-shore, creating a lumpy mess. This is not surfable for a regular board; the setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Only for the absolute experts, and even then, it’s a beast.
Saturday the 29th of August sees the swell dropping back to 8 ft, but with a gentle cross-onshore wind making it fairly choppy. Still a marginal call at best.
There’s a small window on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning shows a tiny 3 ft from the W with an 8-second period, but the wind is glassy. That’s the only real positive – it’ll be dead clean. The wave energy is weak (106). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. A good session for a longboard if you’re desperate for a glide.
From there, we get another pulse of big, unmanageable swell. Wednesday the 2nd of September has 6 ft – 7 ft from the SW and W, with moderate energy (1014 and 1233), but the winds are cross-onshore and creating chop. Not great.
Then Thursday the 3rd of September turns angry again – 13 ft from the W with a very long 12-second period. The wave energy is enormous at 6762. The wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy and dangerous. Way too big for anyone but the most seasoned experts, and even then, it's a mission.
Friday the 4th of September is similar – 12 ft from the W and WNW with a long 11-second period, and a cross-shore wind. The energy readings are 2759 and 3041. Again, it’s too big for this spot, primarily for experts only.
Saturday the 5th of September is the closest we get to a highlight. The swell is 8 ft in the morning and 7 ft in the afternoon, from the WNW with a 9-second period. The wind turns cross-offshore from the NNW, which means it will be clean. The wave energy is still strong (1091 and 1231). This is the pick of the entire 16-day window. It’s still solid, expert-level surf due to the size, but the clean conditions make it a proper stand-out for the big wave crew.
After that, it tails off quickly. The 6th of September is back to weak, 4 ft swell with no energy.
The only true standout in this 16-day run is Saturday the 5th of September. It’s not perfect – the period is a bit short for the size, meaning it’ll be a bit lumpy in the face – but the clean offshore wind is a major positive. For the seasoned locals at Porsmilin, that’s your moment.
Rusty.
