The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've been staring at the charts for our region, and I gotta be straight with you—it's a lean run. We've got a solid 16-day window, but the first decent stretch of surf doesn't show up until Friday morning, the 21st of August. Before that, we're looking at a blank period with absolutely nothing to ride.
Friday, 21st August is our best bet, and it's not a classic. Early morning, Porsmilin is showing a 6ft groundswell from the WNW, with a period of 10 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NW, so the surface will be clean. The combined wave energy is moderate (512). The water temp is 64°, which is about average for this time of year. This is the standout window, but it's not huge. By Friday afternoon, the wind picks up and the swell drops, so get on it early.
Saturday, 22nd August morning hangs in there with a small 2ft leftover from the W, but the wind is light offshore from the NE. It's surfable, but very ordinary. The energy is weak (140). That afternoon, it gets even smaller and the wind picks up onshore.
From Sunday, 23rd August right through to the end of the first week, it's a write-off. We're talking days of onshore winds, storms, and tiny, messy swell. The combined energy drops to as low as 18 and 24. It's not worth paddling out.
Wednesday, 26th August sees a pulse of swell, with 6ft to 7ft, but it's a short-period, wind-driven mess from the SW, with onshore winds and thunderstorm risk. The energy is moderate (388 to 571), but the conditions are poor. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The pattern continues into the second week. Friday, 28th August brings a big, lumpy 7ft to 8ft swell from the WSW, but with strong cross-onshore winds. The energy is very strong (1049), but the quality is terrible. Not for the faint-hearted.
Saturday, 29th August is the biggest day of the forecast, with a 10ft swell from the WSW. The energy is massive (1688). This is expert-only territory, and the wind is still cross-onshore, making it a bumpy, dangerous mess.
After a few more days of poor conditions, there's a flicker of hope on Thursday, 3rd September. We get an 8ft groundswell from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the N. The energy is very strong (1460). This is a promising but less certain long-range call. It's big, so only for experienced surfers, and the long period might make it a bit challenging at a sandbar break like Porsmilin. The conditions are clean, though.
The following days, 4th and 5th September, continue with a similar pattern of 7ft to 8ft swell from the WNW, with clean cross-offshore winds. The energy remains strong (926 to 986). These are all marginal for quality, but they're the best we've got in the second week.
So, to sum it up: Friday morning, the 21st of August, is the one true standout. Get in the water early for a clean, fun-sized wave. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big and messy. Keep an eye on that pulse around the 3rd of September, but don't hold your breath. It's a tough forecast for our area.
Rusty.
