The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Porsmilin over the next couple of weeks.
The next few days are looking pretty grim, to be honest. We've got a bit of a waiting game on our hands. The wave energy is weak, with readings around 100-200 (combined energy), and the swell is small and short-period. From Thursday, August 20th right through the end of the first week, conditions are just messy. There's a lot of cross-shore and onshore wind, a lot of lumpy, choppy water, and the scores are just not there for a decent paddle-out. You'd be looking at a 8 ft swell on Thursday, but it's sloppy with a cross-shore wind. We'll see a few small windows of clean surf, like Saturday morning when the swell drops to 3 ft and the wind goes light offshore from the NE, but it's weak and short-period. The rest of the week is a write-off with strong winds and poor surf.
Now, the water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is just about bang on average for this time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit just yet.
The real hope comes in the second week. There's a promising window opening up around Thursday, September 3rd. That Friday morning, September 4th is looking like the standout. We've got a clean 6 ft NW swell with a moderate offshore breeze from the ENE. The energy is starting to build (467), and the winds are offshore, meaning clean, lined-up waves. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It's a moderate offshore breeze, so the face will be nice and smooth. The break is a sandbar, and it's fairly consistent, so there should be waves to go around, though you might have some company.
The swell direction is coming from the NW and WNW, which is a good angle for this spot. The water's about average for the time of year, so no shocks there.
So, a quiet start, but a solid finish. Keep an eye on that Friday, September 4th.
Rusty.
