The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Porsmilin. This is a tough stretch to call, because we’ve got a long, quiet gap before any real hope shows up. The first decent looking day isn’t until Friday the 28th of August, and even that’s a marginal call. Before that, the swell is tiny and the wind is a mess. For the first four days, it’s flat to poor, with a tiny 2ft to 2ft west-southwest swell and onshore or cross-off winds that just aren’t doing us any favours. The combined energy is weak, with values mostly under 100 (80) or barely above, so there’s just no push.

Then Thursday the 27th brings a sudden spike – a 7ft southwest swell, but it’s short period (9 seconds) and the wind is howling onshore from the southwest at 30 km/h. The energy jumps to 1292, which is strong, but the conditions are a write-off. That’s a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle-surfing one.

Friday the 28th is the first real chance. The morning shows a 4ft west-northwest swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is a clean northwesterly cross-off at 15 km/h. The water temp is about 64°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 461, and the wave comment says “marginal surf forecast” with a score of 1, so it’s not a classic, but it’s the best on offer for a long time. It’s a clean, workable option for an intermediate surfer.

That Friday morning is the standout. The swell direction is west-northwest, which is a decent match for the optimum southwest direction, and the wind is glassy. The crowd situation at Porsmilin is “sometimes”, so you might have a few others out, but it won’t be a zoo.

After that, the weekend into the first week of September is a mixed bag of onshore winds and building but messy swell. Saturday the 29th has a 7ft to 7ft west swell, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the wind is a fresh cross-on at 30 km/h. That’s too big and choppy for beginners, and only for experts if they’re keen. The energy is up there (870), but the quality is poor.

The following Tuesday, September 1st, shows a bit of hope again. The morning has a 5ft west-northwest swell with light northwesterly cross-off winds, and the afternoon is clean with a 4ft swell. The energy is moderate (233 to 365), and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” for the morning, but “expect good surf conditions” for the afternoon. That’s a solid session for an intermediate, and the crowd is likely still manageable.

The rest of the second week tails off into small, weak swell with onshore winds again. The combined energy drops to 34 to 138, and the period is short. There’s a glimmer on Saturday the 5th of September with a 3ft west swell, clean cross-off winds, and a 9-second period, but it’s a small, ordinary day. The energy is 138, which is weak.

So, bottom line: this is a long, quiet run. The only real standouts are Friday morning the 28th of August and Tuesday afternoon the 1st of September. They’re not pumping, but compared to the rest, they’re the ones to circle. The surf is inconsistent, so don’t be surprised by the gaps. It tends not to stay poor for long, but this window is a tough one.

Rusty.
