The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a long, quiet stretch. From Wednesday the 15th all the way through to Thursday the 23rd, it’s basically a flat spell at Porsmilin. There’s just no energy to work with – swell heights are hanging around 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with combined energy barely getting into double digits (34 to 12). The winds are often offshore or clean, which is a tease, but with nothing to push, it’s a total write-off. You’d be better off doing something else. That’s a solid nine days of nothing.
Things finally start to show a pulse on Friday the 24th. A new groundswell fills in from the WNW, with a period of 12 to 13 seconds and combined energy jumping to 207 to 289. Swell heights hit 3 ft to 3 ft. But here’s the kicker – the wind is onshore from the SSW, blowing straight into the break. The forecast calls it poor surf conditions, and I’m not going to argue. It’s a messy setup, so don’t get your hopes up.
Saturday the 25th is where it gets interesting. The morning is still a bit iffy with a light cross-onshore breeze and marginal 3 ft swell (292 energy). But the afternoon turns it on. The wind swings NW, going cross-offshore, and the swell bumps up to 4 ft with a period of 10 seconds. Combined energy hits 454, which is moderate but solid for this spot. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. It’s a sandbar break, fairly consistent and exposed, with an optimum swell from the SW, so this WNW direction is a little off, but the size and clean conditions make it the best on offer in the whole outlook. This is the standout session. Get on it if you can.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th see a bigger push of swell – 5 ft to 8 ft, with energy climbing into the 469 to 1097 range. That’s strong wave energy. But the wind is onshore from the S and SW, blowing hard at 15 to 19 mph. With that much wind and size on a beach break, it’s going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. No good for paddling. If you’re into kite surfing, this setup might be more your speed.
Tuesday the 28th stays big, with 7 ft swells and energy up to 1468, but again, strong onshore SW winds at 19 mph. The quality is poor. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th drop back a bit in size to 4 ft to 7 ft, but the wind stays cross-onshore, keeping things lumpy and choppy. Another week of growlers, not peelers.
So, to wrap it up: the first nine days are a flat spell. The only real window is Saturday afternoon the 25th, with clean 4 ft waves and a light offshore breeze. Don’t sleep on it. After that, it’s a washout of onshore wind and junk.
Rusty.
