Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s break it down. The surf at Porsmilin is gonna be a slow starter for the next week or so, but there’s some real promise if you can wait. For the first few days, it’s mostly small and ordinary, but things start to build towards the end of the second week.
Water temp is sitting around 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need the thickest suit.
Right now, Monday afternoon (July 6) is cross-on with a light westerly breeze and only 3ft of weak, short-period WNW swell (combined energy of 81). Not worth paddling out – it’s poor.
Tuesday (July 7) morning sees a clean window with light north offshore wind, but the swell has dropped to 2ft and energy is very weak (62). Still too small to get excited about. Tuesday afternoon gets a cross-off breeze but the same small waves.
Then Wednesday morning (July 8) is the first half-decent moment. Glassy conditions with a light north wind, 3ft WNW swell, period up to 10 seconds, and combined energy creeping into moderate territory at 109. It’s surfable but very ordinary – more of a longboard glide than a proper session.
Wednesday afternoon sees a stronger north offshore wind (15 mph) but the swell picks up slightly to 3ft wave height with 10-second period and 132 energy. Clean, but still not a standout.
Thursday (July 9) keeps the offshore flow but the wind gets gusty (22 mph by afternoon) and the swell remains around 3ft. Poor conditions by afternoon. Friday (July 10) is more of the same – small, clean but unremarkable.
The whole first week is really a waiting game. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations – the surf is just too weak or the wind too strong or onshore. From around Monday July 13 through Thursday July 16, the swell drops to almost nothing (0.7ft to 1ft) with very low energy. Not a surfer’s window.
Now, onto something worth marking your calendar. The real action kicks in around Friday July 17. Friday morning sees a 5ft WNW swell with 9-second period and combined energy of 310 (moderate-strong). The wind is gentle cross-shore, so there’s slight chop, but the size is there. The afternoon cleans up with a cross-off NW breeze.
Saturday July 18 morning jumps to 7ft from the west, period of 8 seconds, energy of 583 (strong). Wind is gentle north-northwest cross-off – clean. This is solid, but 7ft is getting into expert territory at a sandbar break like Porsmilin. The afternoon gets a fresh north breeze at 19 mph, still cross-off, but the wind is strong.
Then Sunday July 19 morning is the first true standout. 6ft west swell, 7-second period (short period, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and close together), but combined energy is 582 (strong) and the wind is a gentle north-northwest cross-off. Clean. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” and that’s the best call in days. This is the pick of the first two weeks for intermediate surfers.
Monday July 20 morning is another good one: 7ft from the west-northwest, 8-second period, energy 519 (strong), with a light north-east offshore wind – gentle offshore and clean. That’s a proper session for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a fresh north-northeast offshore up to 19 mph, so it’ll be wind-swept but still rideable for the brave.
Finally, Tuesday July 21 sees the biggest swell of the outlook: 8ft WNW groundswell, period 10 seconds in the morning (11 seconds in the afternoon), with combined energy jumping to 1293 in the morning and a massive 2313 in the afternoon – that’s very strong energy. The wind is light cross-shore in the morning (ESE) and gentle cross-shore from the west in the afternoon. This is only for experts. The period is long enough (10-11 seconds) that it’ll have proper power and shape, but at a sandbar like Porsmilin, the long-period swell might break a bit too straight. Still, if you know the bank, this could be epic.
So overall: the first week-plus is quiet, then from Friday July 17 through Tuesday July 21, the swell builds to solid sizes. The two standouts are Sunday morning July 19 (6ft, clean, strong energy) and Monday morning July 20 (7ft, offshore, strong energy). The Tuesday July 21 is the biggest but only for experts. Crowds at Porsmilin can be a thing sometimes, so keep an eye on that if you head out on the best days.
Stay stoked, catch some clean ones.
