Table - best surf conditions forecast for Porsmilin over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a struggle. There’s almost nothing to get excited about until we’re into the second half of the month. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf with mostly poor conditions, so don’t be in a hurry.
The only spot I’m looking at here is Porsmilin, a sandbar setup that’s fairly consistent but we’re going to have to be patient.
The first real window where the ocean wakes up is around Saturday, 22nd July. Through the morning we’ll see some WNW swell pushing 1.6m (5ft), but the wind is cross-shore and tricky. The combined wave energy gets moderate at 327, but it’s not clean enough to call it a winner. By the afternoon the same height holds (5ft), energy up to 370, but still cross-shore and a bit lumpy.
Then Sunday, 23rd July gets bigger. We’re talking 2.2m (7ft) in the morning and 2.0m (7ft) by the afternoon, both from the WNW. That’s into the range where beginners should sit out, and the cross-onshore wind keeps the surface choppy. The energy is strong (679 in the morning, 995 by afternoon) but the quality just isn’t there for a paddle session – this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a clean surfline.
The standout – and I mean the only real standout in this whole 16-day stretch – is the afternoon of Wednesday, 24th July. We’ve got a solid 1.3m (4ft) of WNW swell, period around 9 seconds, combined energy at 282 (moderate). The wind is cross-shore, which isn’t perfect but it’s the best wind we get on a day with real swell. It’s still not a dream session, but if you’re desperate for a wave, this is your best bet.
Before that? Nothing but tiny knee-high dribble. After that? Saturday, 25th July is huge – 3.0m (10ft) in the morning and 2.5m (8ft) in the afternoon, both from the WNW. That’s expert-only territory, and with cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions, it’s more about survival than fun. The energy is very strong (1406 in the morning). Sunday, 26th July stays big but messy with fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy sea state.
Water temp’s sitting at 65°F at the start of the period, a touch warmer than normal for the time of year – not a major change but a little bit of comfort.
So to sum it up: the whole first week and a half is a write-off. The 22nd to 24th of July have some size but wind and chop spoil the quality. The best of a bad bunch is Wednesday 24th afternoon. After Saturday the 25th, it’s too big and messy for most of us.
Hang in there, maybe the forecasts will change.
