The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s be straight with you: the next week and a half is a bit of a dud for Porsmilin. The swell is tiny, mostly below 2ft, and while the wind is often offshore or cross-offshore, keeping things clean, there just isn’t any power. You’re looking at a long run of poor surf conditions from now until around Monday the 27th of July. That's over a week with nothing worth paddling out for.
Things start to change on Monday the 27th. A new pulse of swell arrives, pushing up to about 5ft in the afternoon, but the wind is cross-shore and the wave energy is still building – it’s a moderate 525 on the energy scale. It is still messy, and conditions are rated as poor.
Tuesday the 28th sees a similar size, around 6ft, coming from the WNW with a period of 9-10 seconds. The wind stays a light to gentle cross-shore, but the surf is described as marginal, with questionable tide conditions. The energy is moderate to strong, between 454 and 585.
Now, Wednesday morning the 29th is the real standout of the whole outlook. We’ve got a solid 6ft of WNW groundswell, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the north, and the report says it’s clean. Wave energy is strong, hitting 1026. This is the best window for an intermediate-level surfer. The size is just into the zone where it starts to get a little too much for absolute beginners, over 5ft, so be aware. Because the period isn’t super long, the waves should still have some shape. Expect crowds to be possible at this sandbar break, as it's described as sometimes busy.
Thursday the 30th is still a decent option, with the swell dropping to around 5ft in the morning with light offshore winds. It’s smaller and the energy reads as moderate (336). Friday the 31st jumps back up to 7ft from the WNW with 9-second periods. That is getting big, and conditions are described as marginal, with a lot of cross-shore wind. The energy is very strong (1047 in the morning). This is really only for experienced surfers.
Into the start of August, Saturday the 1st holds a solid 7ft swell with light morning winds, but the conditions are still rated as marginal. By the afternoon, a cross-onshore wind comes in, ruining the surface. Sunday the 2nd is blown out with onshore winds. The only glimmer after that is Monday the 3rd of August. The swell drops back to a more manageable 5ft with light cross-offshore winds from the ENE and clean conditions. It’s smaller and looks like a good, clean option for most surfers.
So, to sum it up: the best wave of the batch is Wednesday morning the 29th of July. If you can get out then, do it. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
Stay safe.
