The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ for Porsmilin over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a rough patch. The first few days are a write-off, honestly. The water’s sitting at about average for this time of year, so no surprises there, but the wind and swell just aren’t playing ball. We’re looking at Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st, with a solid 8ft to 6ft WNW swell, but the wind is all over the place – cross and cross-off, and the energy is still high at 1551, but it’s messy. The real story starts to pick up on Friday morning, the 21st. That’s your first real window.

Friday morning, August 21st – this is the standout of the early run. We’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the WNW, with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, which is gonna keep things tidy. The energy is moderate (557), and it’s surfable, and it’s clean. This is your best bet for the first week. The break is a sandbar, fairly exposed to the SW, and it’s fairly consistent. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have a few mates out, but it’s nothing crazy.

After that, it’s a bit of a dead zone. Saturday the 22nd gives you a tiny 2ft to 2ft swell, but it’s clean and offshore on Saturday morning with a light NE breeze, so if you’re desperate for a longboard session, you could make it work. But honestly, from Sunday the 23rd all the way through to the end of the month, it’s pretty grim. The swell drops, the wind turns onshore or cross-on, and the scores are flat. There’s a stormy period around the 30th and 31st with a strong 7ft swell but near-gale winds and rain – that’s for kite surfers, not paddle surfers. The wind is just too strong.

Now, here’s the light at the end of the tunnel. Tuesday morning, September 1st – this is the one to circle. We’ve got a 7ft swell from the WNW, with a 9-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, making it clean. The energy is moderate-to-strong (773), and the guidance says it’s a good option. This is a solid swell, but at 7ft, it’s getting into the range where beginners might feel a bit out of their depth – it’s more for the intermediate crew. It’s also a bit further out in the forecast, so keep an eye on it, but it’s promising.

After that, the swell drops again and the wind turns, so that Tuesday morning is your best, and really only, true standout. The rest of the second week is a mix of poor conditions and onshore winds.

So, to sum it up for you: If you’re paddling out, make it Friday the 21st morning for a clean, fun session, or wait for that Tuesday the 1st of September morning for a bigger, cleaner groundswell. The rest of the time? Maybe give the board a wax and wait.

Rusty.
