The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so let’s get into it.

The forecast kicks off with a few clean but average days, but the real energy shows up mid-period with a solid SW groundswell. The trouble is, the wind wants to mess with it. We’ve got a few windows of clean, workable surf, especially early Friday morning, but the standout will be that punchy SW swell around the 26th and 27th, even if it’s a bit rough around the edges.

Porsmilin (Friday morning, August 21st): This is where we start. It’s not huge, but it’s clean. We’ve got a 6ft swell out of the WNW with a 10-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze, which is going to keep the faces tidy. Combined energy is at 512, so there’s a decent amount of push. The water’s sitting at 64°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. It’s not a day to be a hero, but the sandbar should be holding some fun ones for the intermediate crew. Crowds are possible, so pick your peak.

The afternoon drops off a bit in size and the wind picks up, making it less appealing. Then Saturday and Sunday are smaller, with less power behind them, even though it’s clean and calm. Just a bit weak for my liking.

Hold onto your hats, because Monday the 24th is flat and junky. Then the real action starts building. On Wednesday the 26th, the swell jumps up to 7ft – 7ft out of the SSW with a short period. This is the first pulse of the bigger energy, with combined readings of 509 and 710. It’s a stormy, onshore mess though, with thunderstorms in the mix. It’s powerful, but I’d say it’s more for the experts and maybe even the kitesurfers if you’re into that sort of thing. The wind is just too on it.

Thursday the 27th is the real standout. The swell holds strong all the way through, 6ft in the morning pushing to 7ft in the afternoon. The direction swings more to the SW. The energy readings are big, hitting 873 in the afternoon. But again, it’s accompanied by onshore winds and stormy conditions. It’s going to be a powerful, tricky, and potentially heavy day. For a spot like this, that size and period is only for the good guys. It’s not a beginner’s day.

After the storm, we get some leftovers on Friday the 28th. It’s windy and the surf quality is blown out. The swell is still there, 6ft to 8ft, but the wind is howling. Saturday the 29th is still big, around 7ft, but it’s choppy and messy.

After that, the energy slowly starts to drop. Sunday through to next Tuesday has swell in the 4ft to 6ft range but with poor onshore conditions. The first week of September is a bit of a letdown. The size fades, and while there’s a hint of a clean, glassy afternoon on Tuesday, September 1st, with 4ft waves, it’s not much to write home about. The rest of that week is smaller, with less energy, and a weird, short-period SSW pulse on the 5th.

So, to wrap it up: your best bet, despite the challenging winds, is that Thursday the 27th. It’s got the size and the power, but you have to be good and be okay with it being a bit of a battle. The early part of the window, Friday morning the 21st, is your cleanest, most user-friendly option. Everything after that is all about chasing the storm and dealing with a bit of a crowd or a lot of chop.

Keep it salty.
