Table - best surf conditions forecast for Porsmilin over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming our way for the next couple of weeks. We're looking at a pretty quiet start and a long wait for anything decent.
The first recommendation we get isn't until Friday, 10 July. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a slightly thinner wetsuit.
Friday morning, 10 July, at Porsmilin offers the only real glimmer of light in the first week. It's a sandbar break, fairly exposed to the swell, and we've got some small 3 ft waves from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the ENE at 9 mph, which will keep things clean. The combined swell energy is only moderate at 151, so it's not packing much punch, but it's surfable. The rating is 3/5 for intermediate surfers, but crowds are possible here sometimes, so keep that in mind if you head out. All the weak energy is from that point on... the rest of the weekend and the following week are a write-off. We're talking days of tiny, weak swell and poor conditions right through to Thursday, 16 July.
After that massive gap of poor surf, things start to look a bit more promising but remain uncertain. Into the second week, from 21 July onwards, the swell starts to build. Tuesday morning, 21 July, we see 3 ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds and moderate energy (113), but the wind is cross-shore and messy. It's not the best. On Wednesday and Thursday, 22 and 23 July, the swell gets a bit more size, up to 4 to 4 ft from the WNW, and the energy climbs into the moderate range (258 and 194), but the wind remains cross or cross-onshore, keeping things lumpy.
The real standout, and the one to keep an eye on, is the forecast for Friday the 24th through Saturday the 25th. The swell is set to build significantly, hitting 7 ft on Friday afternoon from the west with a period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy skyrockets to a very strong 513! That's serious power in the water. However, the wind on Friday is onshore from the SW and SSW, which means it's going to be messy. Saturday morning, 25 July, looks much better: a solid 6 ft swell from the west, with a 9-second period and clean conditions thanks to a cross-offshore NW breeze at 12 mph. The energy is still strong at 484. This is the one to aim for if you've got the skills. At that size (over 5 ft), it's getting too big for beginners, and with 6 to 7 ft on offer, it's for the experienced crew only. It's a long-range call so keep an eye on the charts, but it's our best chance for some proper waves in this outlook. Short period (8 sec) will keep the waves a bit crumbly, but at that size it'll be a fun paddle out.
Stay tuned, and I'll see you out there if the swell delivers.
Rusty.
