The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the table for Porsmilin. I’ve gotta be straight with you – we’ve got a long stretch ahead, and it’s not looking like a classic run of good waves. The first solid surfable action doesn’t kick in until Thursday the 20th of August, and even then, it’s a bit of a slog. Overall, the pattern is messy with a lot of wind and cross-chop before we get a brief window of cleaner conditions.

The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

We start off with nothing on Tuesday and Wednesday the 18th and 19th – just small, junky, wind-blown dribble that’s not worth paddling for. The first real pulse of energy arrives on Thursday morning the 20th of August, with a 8ft swell from the WNW, but the cross-shore wind at 16 mph is making it choppy and messy. The combined energy is high at 1408 (moderate-strong), but the quality is poor. By Thursday afternoon, it’s still cross and lumpy at 7ft, and you’re looking at a long wait for anything half decent.

The best of the entire 16-day window is hands down Friday morning the 21st of August. We get a WNW swell of 5ft with a 10-second period, and the wind swings to a light WNW cross-offshore at 9 mph. The conditions will be clean, and the combined energy is a solid 436 (moderate). This is a standout for sure. Porsmilin is a sandbar break that’s fairly exposed to the SW, and this swell direction (WNW) is a good match. The waves should have some shape and power, but it’s not too big for intermediates. Keep in mind, crowds are possible here – it’s a spot that sees company when it’s clean.

After that, things drop off fast. Friday afternoon goes cross and small, and Saturday the 22nd through to the end of the month sees a steep decline. The swell barely reaches 4ft on Saturday morning, with a weak 6-second period and combined energy of just 177 (weak). The wind is clean, but the swell is too weak to hold together. From Sunday the 23rd onwards, it’s a long, flat spell. We’re talking swell heights of 1.0ft to 2ft for days on end, with offshore winds that just have nothing to work with. The combined energy drops to single and low double digits – 14, 23, 24. That’s a dead ocean.

The next bump of size comes around Wednesday the 26th of August, with a 8ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is cross and fresh at 16 mph, making it a lumpy, blown-out mess. The combined energy is 1070 (strong), but with poor surf conditions, it’s more of a white-knuckle drift than a session. Thursday the 27th gets even worse with a near gale from the SW at 34 mph and 8ft onshore slop. Honestly, for a beach-and-reef setup like this, that’s more interesting for the kite crew than paddle surfers.

The final week of August into early September isn’t much better. There’s a pulse of 8ft on Tuesday the 1st of September with a strong cross-offshore wind, but the period is short (8 seconds) and the quality is still poor. The combined energy is 761 (moderate), but it’s just not clean enough to get excited about.

So, to sum it up: you’ve got one clear standout – Friday morning the 21st of August. That’s your window. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too messy. The gap between the 22nd and the 26th is a flat, dead stretch of about four days, and after that, it’s more of the same poor quality. Don’t expect much else. Keep your eyes on the forecast, though – things can change.

Rusty.
