The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Porsmilin over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week and a half is a real struggle. We’re looking at tiny, weak surf that barely gets going, with swell heights stuck between 0.7ft and 2ft for days on end. The wave energy is very low, with values mostly in the teens and twenties. There’s a bit of offshore wind early on, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just not enough push to get you into anything worthwhile. You’ll be waiting a long time between sets, and when they come, they’ll be pretty gutless. The period is short, often under 9 seconds, so it’s just windswell junk. This stretch runs from Thursday 16th July right through to the morning of Monday 27th July – a good ten days of basically nothing to get excited about.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no drama there.
Now, the real story kicks in on Tuesday 28th July. The morning still looks poor, but the afternoon sees a noticeable bump in energy. The swell jumps to 5ft from the SW, with a period of just 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 309 – that’s moderate energy starting to build. It’s still a bit raw and short-period, but it’s a sign of things to come.
The standout is Wednesday 29th July. This is the one. The morning brings a solid 7ft swell from the W, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1325 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is light offshore from the N, so the surf will be clean and well-shaped. This is going to be good, but it’s also getting up there in size. At 7ft, this is for experienced surfers only; beginners will want to sit this one out. The wind does get a bit stronger in the afternoon, so the morning is the clear window. This break is a sandbar setup, and with that much west swell, it should be handling it well.
Following that, Thursday 30th July still has solid 6ft to 5ft waves from the WNW, but the energy drops off and the wind gets a bit more cross-offshore. It’s still surfable, but not a patch on the Wednesday morning. The period stays around 9 seconds, so still a bit short.
The last day in the window, Friday 31st July, shows another 6ft W swell with 8-second period and moderate energy (696), with cross-offshore winds. It’s a decent option if you missed the peak, but the quality won’t be as high.
This break is a sandbar, and it’s fairly consistent when there’s swell. Crowds are listed as ‘sometimes’, so you might have a few others around, but it’s not going to be a zoo. The optimum swell direction is from the SW, so the W and WNW swells we get are a bit off that sweet spot, but they’ll still wrap in nicely enough.
If you’re looking for the best of the window, it’s that Wednesday 29th July morning. The rest of the run is either too small or too messy. Keep an eye on it, because that 7ft pulse is the real deal – just for the crew who can handle it.
