The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Pors Carn over the next couple of weeks.
First thing’s first, I gotta be straight with you: there’s a proper flat spell staring us right in the face. For the first week and a bit, from Thursday the 13th of August all the way through to Tuesday the 25th of August, the surf is just a no-go. We’re talking poor surf conditions day after day, with a lot of cross-shore wind and a lumpy chop that’ll ruin any wave. The swell is small and weak, with combined energy readings mostly under 300 (weak to moderate wave energy), and it’s just not worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s normal.
Now, there is a flicker of hope right at the end of the run. On Wednesday morning the 26th of August, we get a bit of a pulse. The swell bumps up to 6 ft from the W, with a 10-second period, and the wind is swinging offshore from the WSW at 19 mph. That’s a fresh offshore breeze, so the conditions will be clean. The combined energy is a solid 956 (strong wave energy). This is the best of the bunch, but it’s a long way off and the forecast is a bit less certain. A beginner might find 6 ft a bit much, but for the rest of us, it’s a proper window.
Then on Thursday the 27th, the afternoon looks tasty. The swell is 7 ft from the WSW, period at 8 seconds, with a clean offshore wind from the SW at 16 mph. It’s going to be a bit of a handful for anyone not experienced, but the waves will be there (combined energy 572, moderate wave energy).
So, to be honest, the standout here is that Wednesday the 26th morning session. It’s the only time in the whole outlook where the conditions line up for a decent paddle. If you’re a kiter, the whole first week with the cross-shore wind and lumpy waves might be more your scene than a surfer’s. For the rest of us, it’s a long wait for one good window.
Rusty.
