The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, this time in feet and knots for you. Let’s run through Sumpters.
Honestly, it’s a grim 16 days. From Thursday the 6th right through to Wednesday morning the 12th, it’s flat and messy. The swell barely pushes 1ft, with a lot of cross-shore and onshore wind making a mess of it. There’s a glassy morning on Saturday the 8th, but the swell is only 0.3ft, so you’re just floating around. The combined energy readings are all weak, well under 100, mostly in the single digits. Nothing happening.
The best window is Thursday morning the 13th. A groundswell from the WSW bumps up to 3ft with a 10-second period, and the energy hits 193 (moderate). The wind goes glassy from the SSW. That’s the cleanest, most surfable moment of the whole outlook. The waves are still just ordinary, but it’s the only real chance for a wave.
After that, it drops off again. Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th are small and choppy. Monday the 17th has a clean cross-offshore wind from the N, but the swell is only 2ft, so it’s weak. The energy is a low 53. Not worth the drive.
The rest of the run from the 18th onward is more tiny, wind-affected surf. The swell never gets above 3ft, and the winds are often onshore or fresh cross-onshore, especially on the 20th with 19 mph winds making it lumpy.
Sumpters is an inconsistent reef, and this forecast lives up to that. The 13th is the only real stand-out, and it’s just “surfable.” The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no drama there.
This stretch looks more fun for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest. Keep your board waxed, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
