The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real about this one.

We’ve got a 16-day window, and honestly, for Sumpters, it’s a tough watch. This is a reef break that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and right now, it’s not the best of times. The first real glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Friday the 14th of August, so we’re looking at a solid week of flat, poor conditions before that. After that, the options are thin and fleeting.

The water temperature is a massive talking point here. It’s sitting at 68°F, which is a whopping 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s incredibly unusual, so you’ll be surfing in a warm bath, but sadly, the waves won’t match the water temp.

Let’s run through the only real moment that’s worth your time. The standout, and I mean the *only* standout, is the morning of Friday, August 14th. We’ve got clean, glassy conditions with a light offshore from the S. The swell is a modest 3 ft out of the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 103, so it’s not going to be thumping. But that glassy surface and the reef bottom might just give you a few clean, fun little waves. The catch? It’s Sumpters, and it’s an inconsistent spot, so don’t expect a conveyor belt. Also, crowds are often an issue here, so be prepared to share the lineup.

The next morning, Sunday, August 16th, looks clean with a cross-offshore wind from the NNW, and the swell bumps up to 4 ft out of the WSW. The energy is moderate at 128. But it’s still a cross-offshore wind, which isn't perfect, and the overall wave comment is still "poor surf conditions". It’s a maybe, but not a standout.

After that, Monday, August 17th morning also has glassy conditions with a NE wind, and a 4 ft WSW swell. The energy is a bit stronger at 199. This is another “surfable but very ordinary” call. It’s promising, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep your expectations in check.

The rest of the outlook is a write-off. The wind is a mess, mostly cross or cross-on, and the swell is either tiny or short-period and choppy. By the time we get to the 20th and 21st of August, the wind is howling at 19 mph, and the swell is all but dead. It’s a blank run for a while.

Bottom line: There’s no big swell, no long-period groundswell, and the wind is mostly junk. The only real window is Friday the 14th, and maybe a peek on Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th, but they’re not guarantees. If you’re set on getting wet, set your alarm for the 14th.

Rusty.
