Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening with The Maze over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – the start of this period is a write-off.
Right now and through the first few days, we’ve got a solid but messy swell rolling in. Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th see a 6ft to 8ft swell from the WSW and W, but with a short period of 8 to 10 seconds and strong onshore to cross-onshore winds. The combined energy is moderate to strong (725 to 1774), but the quality is just poor – lumpy, choppy, and blown out. Not worth paddling out. Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th look similar: still a 6ft to 7ft swell, still wind-affected and messy. Nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday the 7th drops right off – swell down to 4ft and the combined energy falls to 162-169, still with poor conditions. We get a tease on Wednesday the 8th afternoon when the wind goes glassy and the swell holds at 3ft. The energy is weak (138), but it’s surfable. Just very ordinary.
Now, Thursday the 9th is where things get interesting. This is the standout of the forecast. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the W with a long period of 10 seconds and a nice cross-offshore breeze from the SSE – that’s clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate (223). It’s not huge, but The Maze is a beach and point setup, and that longer period groundswell will wrap in nicely with good shape. With light winds and clean surf, this morning session is the best we’re going to see for a while. Mind you, it’s “fairly consistent” and crowds are “sometimes” an issue here, so you might have some company.
Friday the 10th offers similar small 4ft swell with light cross-shore winds, but the conditions are more marginal. Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th are tiny – under 3ft, weak energy, just not worth it. There’s a brief blip Monday 13th with a 7ft swell from a long 11-second period and clean offshore winds, but the combined energy is strong (1029) and the forecast calls it marginal due to tide or conditions. That one could be a gamble for more experienced surfers, as it’s getting towards the bigger, more powerful end of the scale.
After that, the second week trails off into small, weak, and clean but unexciting surf. Nothing else really stands out as a must-surf session. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Alright, keep your eyes on that Thursday morning. It’s not a bomb, but it’s clean and it’s the closest we get to good surf in this run. Stay tuned, forecasts change.
Rusty.
