The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down The Maze (Tiree).
Honestly, for the next week and a half, it’s a tough read. From now through the 29th of August, we’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions – messy chop, onshore wind, and tiny waves. The combined energy is barely there, stuck in the double digits (81, 42, 61), and the swell is under 3 ft for days. Nothing worth paddling for.
The first real chance pops up on Monday, the 24th of August. That morning brings a solid 5 ft swell out of the WNW with a nice 11-second period. The combined energy jumps to 504 (moderate wave energy). The wind is from the SSE, a clean cross-offshore breeze. Tuesday the 25th stays clean with that same wind, but the swell drops to just over 3 ft from the W with a 10-second period and energy around 214. That Monday morning looks like the only real window in that first week for a patient surfer.
After another quiet spell, the real standout for the whole 16-day window looks to be Wednesday, the 2nd of September, and Thursday, the 3rd of September. On Wednesday, we see 5 ft from the WSW, building to 6 ft in the afternoon. The energy reads at 410 and 565 (moderate wave energy) with a 9-10 second period. The wind is SSE and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. Thursday the 3rd is the one to circle. We’re looking at a solid 7 ft swell from the W, 10-second period, and the combined energy hits 832 (strong wave energy). The wind is light from the north, a cross-shore direction, so you’ll get clean surf with just a little texture on the surface. That’s the session right there – size and clean conditions. For most surfers, 7 ft is a fun size, but beginners should be wary.
Water temp is 59°F on that first Friday, with an anomaly of 1°F above average. So pretty normal for the season at The Maze.
To sum it up: plan for a rough week with almost nothing. Your target is Monday the 24th for a small clean window, and then the real action is on the 2nd and 3rd of September, with the 3rd being the big morning call. It’s a long way off, so stay tuned, but that’s the one.
Rusty.
