The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let me level with you: The Maze (Tiree) isn’t giving us anything good in this 16-day stretch. It’s a beach-and-point break that usually picks up west swell, but the conditions are just off. Water temp is 57°F – about normal for July – but that’s the only thing that’s average.
From July 14 through July 24, we’re stuck with tiny waves – mostly under 2 feet, with short periods (8–11 seconds). The combined wave energy is pitiful, often below 50. The wind is cross or cross-off, but it’s blowing 10–25 mph most days, so the surface is never clean. Scores are all zero or a flat “surfable but very ordinary.”
Then around July 25, a bigger swell shows up: 7 to 8 feet from the west at a long 12–13 seconds. That’s a real groundswell, but the wind is a strong cross-shore at 22 mph from the north-northwest. For a beach-and-point break, that long period can make the waves too straight, and with that wind, it’s just messy. The combined energy hits 1565 – strong, yes – but it’s not surfable. That size (over 8 feet) is experts-only anyway.
The last few days, July 27–29, the swell drops back to around 3 feet. July 28 morning is the only bright spot: glassy conditions with a light westerly, 3 feet west swell at 8 seconds. Combined energy is 151, still weak, but at least it’s clean. You might snag a couple of fun rides, but it’s no highlight. After that, it’s back to lumpy cross-shore wind.
The Maze is usually fairly consistent, but this run is a total blank. Don’t bother suiting up unless you see a big change in the forecast. It’ll turn around eventually.
Rusty.
