Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks on Tiree are lookin’ pretty grim for a proper paddle. It’s not all bad news if you’re happy with a longboard or a foiler, but anyone hopin’ for a proper session is gonna have to be patient. The first real flicker of life doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 14th, and even then it's small. We’ve got a big gap of absolutely no surf worth mentionin’ from now all the way through to the morning of Monday the 13th – that’s a solid week-plus of flat or blown-out junk.

Let’s talk about The Maze. It’s a beach and point setup exposed to the west, and for the first week and a half, the wind is just murderin’ it. Sunday the 5th through to Monday the 14th is a write-off: strong cross-onshore winds up to 25 mph, messy, lumpy, and the swell is mostly short-period windswell in the 3 ft to 7 ft range, but it’s all junk. The combined swell energy is moderate at best, hittin’ 634 on Monday the 6th, but with that onshore wind it’s just a waste.

Alright, here’s your one true stand-out. Tuesday the 14th – mark it. The morning is glassy, with a light wind from the south goin’ glass. Swell is a tiny 3 ft from the west, but with a 10-second period that gives it a bit of shape. The energy is weak (159-161), and the surf report itself just says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The water temp is 55°F, which is about average for July around here. But when you get a glassy morning on a point break on Tiree at this time of year, you take it. Crowds are possible here, and with conditions this clean, you might see a few other keeners. It’s small – your longboard or a foiler will be happy.

The rest of the second week stays pretty small and ordinary. Wednesday the 15th through Thursday the 16th is mostly cross-shore junk under 3 ft. Then there’s a blip on Friday the 17th morning: a 7 ft west swell with a long 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy spikes to 1726, which is strong. But the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 19 mph from the north, so it’ll be lumpy, and the report calls it “marginal.” For a spot like The Maze that works best in clean conditions, that wind will ruin the shape for a paddle surfer. The period is long, so at a point break the waves might have some proper power, but it's gonna be a messy battle. That setup looks far more interestin’ for a kite surfer than for a paddle session.

So, bottom line: if you’re sitten’ on the fence, hold out for the glassy conditions on Tuesday the 14th. It’s small, but it’s your cleanest bet.

- Rusty
