The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.

Right now, The Maze (Tiree) is pretty flat and a bit of a let-down. We’ve got a few days of small, weak, wind-affected junk to work through before anything shows up. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off – tiny 1ft to 2ft windswell with onshore or cross-onshore breezes. Not worth getting wet for.

There’s a brief glimmer Monday the 24th morning. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell carrying some real energy (460 combined energy). The wind is cross-offshore and the setup looks clean. This is the best of the first week, but it’s still only marginal, and the score is low. The Maze is a beach and point setup, so that long-period swell might break a bit straight on the beach sections, but the point could offer some shape. Crowds are possible.

Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th see the swell drop back under 3ft with clean winds but just not enough push. Thursday the 27th morning is glassy with a small 3ft, 10-second groundswell from the west. The energy is 115 – not strong, but it’s the first proper “glassy” morning. You could get a few if you’re keen, but it’s ordinary.

Friday the 28th turns ugly again with a strong cross-wind and lumpy 4ft stuff.

Then Saturday the 29th afternoon, we get a 7ft from the WNW with an 8-second period, energy jumps to 554. That’s moderate energy, but the period is short, so it’ll be a bit fat and crumbly. Wind is light cross-shore, so the surface might be okay, but that size is going to be too much for beginners and it’s still rated marginal. Not the standout.

Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are messy with strong winds and risk of thunderstorms, not your friend.

The best true standout in the whole 16-day window lands on Thursday the 3rd of September. Morning’s got a 4ft swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, combined energy of 327 – moderate but solid. The wind is fresh cross-offshore from the ESE, keeping things clean. Then the afternoon gets even better: 3ft from the WSW, still 10 seconds, but the wind switches to a gentle offshore from the east, clean conditions. That afternoon session is the pick of the bunch – surfable, clean, and with a bit of energy. The long-period groundswell will work well at the point. Crowds are possible.

After that, it fades out. Friday the 4th is tiny and poor. Saturday the 5th is glassy but small and weak with a short period – only for the dedicated longboarder. Sunday the 6th is just lumpy and messy.

Overall, don’t get too excited for the next week. Monday the 24th is a maybe, but the real standout is that Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon at The Maze. It’s clean, the wind is right, and the swell has some life. That’s your session.

Rusty.
