The Lowdown

Alright, let's talk about The Maze (Tiree). I've looked at the whole 16-day window, and I gotta be straight with you – there's nothing worth paddling out for. Not a single good session in sight. The Maze is a beach and point setup that's usually fairly consistent, and it gets exposed to the west, with its best waves coming from a straight west swell. But the wind and swell just aren't lining up this time.

The water here is sitting at about 59.2°F right now, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so you won't freeze your toes off, but that's about the only positive.

We start off on Sunday the 19th with a tiny 2ft NW windswell, period a weak 7 seconds, and a cross-shore wind that's making a mess. Energy is a paltry 68, so forget it. Monday the 20th is a bit bigger – 3ft from the NW in the afternoon, period still short, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. Energy climbs to 135, but conditions are still poor. Tuesday the 21st drops back to 1.6ft, and the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph cross-shore, lumpy and horrible. Wednesday the 22nd is more of the same: 3ft NW but with a period of only 4 seconds in the morning, energy 62 – just messy.

Thursday the 23rd sees a shift to onshore winds from the west, but the swell is still small (2.3–2.6ft) and short period. Friday the 24th gets a bump: 5.2ft in the morning, 5.6ft in the afternoon, wind onshore at 22–25 mph, energy up to 358 and 412 – but it's blown out, poor conditions. Saturday the 25th brings 6.9ft WNW swell with a period of 11 seconds, energy 990, but cross-onshore wind and chop ruin it. Sunday the 26th is 7.9ft WNW, period 9 seconds, energy 897, still onshore wind. Monday the 27th holds 7.9ft from the west, period 10 seconds, energy over 1000, but cross-onshore and lumpy. Tuesday the 28th is the biggest: 11.5ft from the west in the morning, period 10 seconds, energy a massive 4144 – but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-shore, messy cross-chop. That's expert-only territory anyway, and the wind kills it.

There's one tiny glimmer on Wednesday the 29th morning: 5.6ft WNW, period 10 seconds, energy 551, with a light onshore breeze from the WSW at 6 mph. The forecast says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions" – that's the only moment
