The Lowdown
Right, folks. Rusty here with a look at the waves at The Maze (Tiree). There’s nothing worth paddling out for until at least this coming Wednesday.
We’ve got a long, flat spell to sit out, with a few days of small, weak, and messy surf or just straight-up junk from Monday the 17th through to Tuesday the 25th. During that stretch, there’s no recommendation worth a wet suit. It’s one of those blank runs that can happen here, but the models are hinting at a real pulse of energy later on.
The standout session looks to be the last day of the month. On Monday the 31st of August, The Maze is the spot. We get a solid 5ft to 6ft groundswell from the West with a period of 10 seconds. The combined swell energy is a solid, punchy 646 to 678 (moderate energy), and the wind is a light, clean offshore breeze from the SSE to NNE, glassing it up nicely. This is clean surf with proper shape and power. Tuesday the 1st of September morning holds similar promise with a 8ft West swell and light offshore wind, though the afternoon looks to get wrecked by a strong breeze. The water temperature is around 59°, which is pretty much average for the time of year, so it’s just a wetsuit as usual.
The mid-range on Wednesday the 19th of August shows a 8ft West swell, but it’ll be sloppy and cross-shore with rain – a frustrating “almost there” moment. That swell has a very long 11-second period, which at a beach and point setup like The Maze won't be as clean as a short-period windswell, and the wind just isn't cooperating.
So, lock in that Monday the 31st. It’s the only green light in the whole 16-day window, a proper morning mission. Don't hold your breath for much else.
