Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what's coming down the pipe for us. We've got one main spot to keep an eye on, and it's going to be a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks. The first week is a write-off, so don't bother waxing up until the second week, when we get a bit of a pulse and then a proper, promising surge right at the end.
We're looking at The Maze (Tiree) here. The water temp is sitting at 55°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about. It's a beach and point setup, so it can handle a bit of grunt, but it's exposed to the west.
Don't even look at the surf from July 6th right through to the morning of July 14th. That's a long, flat, ugly stretch. We're talking a solid eight days of poor conditions. There are waves, but the wind is just hammering it. Monday the 6th kicks off with a 7ft W swell, but a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind has it all sloppy and brutal. The combined energy sits at 573, moderate but wasted. This pattern just repeats—heights between 3ft and 7ft, but winds are cross-on or cross the whole time, creating messy, choppy junk. Not worth your time. The period is short, around 8 to 11 seconds, which for a beach and point break doesn't do much to help those conditions.
Now, Tuesday morning, July 14th. This is where it gets interesting. The wind drops away completely—glassy, calm. The swell might only be 3ft from the WNW, but that clean glass means it’s surfable. The period pumps up to 11 seconds (165 energy), so it’s a proper little groundswell. This is the first real window. It’s small, but it'll be clean and fun. The break is "fairly consistent" so you should get some waves.
After that, we're back into tiny conditions. A few glassy mornings on the 16th and 17th with 1.0ft and 2ft swells, but the energy is so weak (18 to 60) it's barely a ripple. It's clean, sure, but you'll be scratching for anything.
Then hold onto your board. The big news is Monday, July 20th. A serious pulse of swell arrives. The height hits 10ft from the west, and it's packing some serious power. The combined energy is a massive 1379 on the morning and explodes to 2047 in the afternoon. That is strong, powerful wave energy. The wind? A clean 19 mph NNE cross-offshore. That is clean. That is the standout. This is solid, expert-only territory at that size, and the period is 9-10 seconds, so it'll be a powerful, grinding beast. For the experienced crew, this is the one to circle. The Maze is a point and beach break, and with that swell size and a cross-off wind, it could be world-class.
Tuesday the 21st keeps the size with another 8ft to 10ft day, but the wind swings cross-on and then cross, making it choppier and messier. Still a big swell, but not as clean as Monday.
So, the call is simple: wait out the trash in the first week. The standout is Monday, July 20th at The Maze. Get it.
Rusty, signing off.
