The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for The Maze (Tiree). Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough watch. The 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. There's a massive, frustrating gap of no real surf on offer right from the start, stretching all the way through until the tail end of the period. We're talking nearly two weeks of near-flat, messy conditions. The water's sitting at 59°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won't be feeling it much when you're just standing on the beach staring at a lake.
So, let's get through this bleak spell. From Thursday the 16th right through to the 25th of July, it's a sad story. Tiny swells, mostly around 1 ft to 2 ft, with hopelessly short periods and a constant cross-shore or onshore wind that'll have it looking like washing-up water. The wave energy barely ticks into double figures, a measly 30 to 97 (weak). It's just not happening.
We finally see a spark of life on Friday the 24th of July. The Maze sees a jump in the swell, up to 5 ft from the WNW. But before you get your hopes up, it's arriving with a moderate cross-onshore breeze that'll chop it all up. The energy is there, though, with a combined reading of 758 (strong to very strong), which tells you there's real power in the water. This isn't one for the paddle board though; with those winds, this is the one day in the whole run that looks genuinely more interesting for the kite crew.
Then on Sunday the 26th of July, things get a little less awful. We've got a WSW breeze at just 3 mph, bordering on glassy early, and a little 4 ft pulse from the WNW, with a combined energy of 277 (moderate). The forecast calls it marginal, and I'd agree. It's the closest we get to a clean, rideable wave, but it's small and weak-looking. The wind state is unknown, which is unsettling. The following Monday morning, the 27th, the wind actually goes cross-off from the SSE, tidying things up with a 3 ft swell from the WNW and energy at 156 (moderate). It's clean, but the size is tiny.
To be blunt, there are no true standouts here. If you're desperate for a surf, the small window on the morning of Sunday the 26th or Monday the 27th is your best crack, but keep your expectations on the floor. The long wait for something is more normal for this area when the charts are this stubborn. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
