The Lowdown
Alright, let's have a look at this. The Maze on Tiree. It's a waiting game, lads. The first week is a total dud, but there's some serious juice on the horizon if you can hold out.
Right from the 22nd through the 28th, it's flat and messy. Tiny swell, weak energy, and the wind is mostly onshore or light. "Poor surf conditions" is all the file is telling us, and that's the truth. Don't even bother waxing your board.
A bit of a bump shows up on the 29th and 30th. Saturday the 29th brings a 7ft swell from the west, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind is howling from the WNW at 18 mph. It'll be a choppy, blown-out mess. Sunday the 30th is a smaller, uglier version of the same. Monday the 31st is more of the same, wind from the north at 21 mph making everything lumpy on a 6ft swell. This is a kiteboarding forecast, not a surfing one.
After a quiet Tuesday the 1st, the whole place lights up. Wednesday the 2nd of September, we get a proper groundswell. A solid 12ft swell rolls in from the WSW with a moderate energy reading. The period is building to 9 seconds, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the NNE. This is a big, heavy wave for experienced surfers only.
Thursday the 3rd of September is the one to circle. This is the standout session. The swell holds at 10ft to 12ft from the west with a gorgeous 10 to 11-second period. The energy is pumping very strong. The wind goes glassy in the afternoon with a light offshore breeze from the east. Conditions are described as "excellent for experienced surfers." This is a proper, heavy groundswell with perfect, clean conditions. The swell direction from the west is exactly what The Maze wants to see. This is the day.
Friday the 4th still has size, with an 12ft to 8ft west swell, but that long 12-second period will make it wall up, and the cross-off wind will be strong. A powerful option, but not as clean as Thursday.
The rest of that second weekend into the 6th keeps the size, with waves in the 7ft to 12ft range, but the wind starts to mess things up and the quality dips. That Thursday the 3rd is your absolute best bet.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a complete blank. Don't bother. After a long dry spell, the second week cranks. The absolute best day is Thursday the 3rd of September. Glassy, clean, and a powerful, solid 12ft west swell. Wednesday the 2nd is a big, raw alternative for the brave.
Rusty.
