The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, it’s a bit of a quiet start for The Maze (Tiree). The whole first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, I’m sorry to say. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to Saturday the 29th, the wind is just a mess – cross, cross-on, and strong – and the swell is either too small or too short-period to clean up. We’re looking at a solid 10-day gap with no real surf to speak of. The water is sitting at 59°, which is bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Now, if you’re patient, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The first real chance of something rideable comes on Monday the 24th of August. The wind swings around to a light SE breeze, giving us a clean cross-off. The swell is a groundswell from the WNW at 5ft with a 11-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 504 (moderate). That’s a decent amount of push for the spot. The wind is clean, but the period is long enough that the waves will be a bit more powerful and lined up, though watch out for the sets being a little straight at the beach sections. It’s a better bet for the point and reef areas. The Tuesday morning after that has a stiff ESE wind at 28 mph, but still cross-off, so it’s clean but the swell drops to 3ft – not much to work with there.
The standout window, if I’m being honest, is that Monday morning of the 24th. It’s the only time in the 16-day outlook where the conditions come together for a proper surf. The rest of the period is a right-off, with onshore winds and lumpy, choppy seas. The 4th of September sees a big 10ft swell from the W with a massive 12-second period and a combined energy of 3287 (strong), but that’s with a strong 28 mph onshore wind. That’s not a paddling day; that’s a day for the kite surfers to have a blast. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game.
Stay stoked, but not too hopeful for the next week.
