The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I've got to be straight with you: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. The Maze (Tiree) is a beach and point set-up that needs a good W swell and clean conditions, and we're just not getting the combo. The best of the lot is a brief window around Monday the 24th of August, but even that comes with a caveat.
We start the run with a long, flat gap. The first bit of interest doesn't show up until the morning of Monday the 24th. That morning, we’ve got a 5ft swell rolling in from the WNW with a solid 11-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 460, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the SSE. It’s not perfect, but the afternoon cleans up even more—still 4ft of WNW swell, period holding at 11 seconds, and a gentle cross-off breeze. The water temp is about 58°, which is pretty normal for the time of year. If you're going to get wet, Monday afternoon on the 24th is the standout. The cross-off wind will keep it clean, and the swell has some push. It’s a beach and point, so that long period (11 seconds) should wrap in nicely.
After Monday, it goes downhill fast. Tuesday through to Thursday of that week sees the swell drop and the wind turn messy. The waves get small and the conditions are poor. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are a complete write-off—small, short-period windswell and lumpy cross-shore winds. Sunday the 30th is glassy in the morning, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft, so you’re looking at a flat, glassy lake.
The second week is a total washout. There is a massive spike of energy on Friday the 4th of September—a 8ft, 11-second swell from the WSW with a combined energy of 1338. That’s a lot of juice! But the wind is a strong cross-off in the morning, swinging to a strong cross-on in the afternoon. That kind of size and onshore wind at The Maze will be a washing machine. It’s only for experts, and honestly, the wind is going to ruin it. Saturday the 5th is cleaner but the swell drops to 4ft. Then Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th are totally blown out by gale-force winds.
Honestly, there’s no classic day here. The stand-out is Monday afternoon, August 24th. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only time the swell, wind, and period line up for a decent, clean paddle. The rest of the run is a lot of waiting for nothing.
Rusty.
