Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Maze (Tiree) over the next 16 days.
Alright, folks, Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks for our little slice of Hebrides paradise.
To be honest, looking at the charts for The Maze (Tiree) has me feeling a bit flat. We've got a long stretch of small, weak swell ahead. The first real chance of anything rideable comes on Tuesday the 14th of July. There are a couple of small pulses of energy out of the west, bumping heights to 2ft. The 11-second period on the Tuesday morning is a nice sign, meaning the waves might have a bit of shape to them, and with a light 5 mph south wind it'll be clean. But the energy is low – it's not going to set the world on fire.
Honestly, the best of a pretty ordinary bunch looks to be Thursday the 23rd of July. It's a bit of a wait, but we get a little 2ft west swell with a 9-second period and, get this, glassy conditions in the morning. That "glassy" word is a major positive for me. When the wind goes totally flat like that, the ocean cleans right up. The crowd situation is only "sometimes" there, so you might actually get a few waves to yourself if you're keen. It's not big, but for a quiet, clean paddle, that's the one I'd circle on the calendar.
We’ve got a nasty stretch from the 26th on. The swell finally gets some size, pushing 5ft by Sunday the 26th with some serious energy behind it, but it's messed up by strong cross-shore winds. Then on the 28th of July we see some real power with a 6-7ft west swell and a long 12-second period – the energy is massive and serious. But the wind is howling onshore from the west. That setup looks way more interesting for a kite surfer than someone on a paddle board. It’s going to be a messy, blown-out beast.
So, the takeaway? It's a quiet start, and the second week is more about promise than perfection. That Thursday the 23rd is your best bet for a clean, quiet session on a small wave. The bigger stuff later is strictly for experts or the kite crew.
Rusty.
