The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a grim stretch ahead for Sennen Cove. The next two weeks are basically a write-off. We’re looking at day after day of poor surf conditions, with only a few fleeting moments that are barely worth paddling out for. The run of blank days is long, extending from now through the entire forecast period, with barely a glimmer of anything decent.
The only time that even comes close to being worth a mention is Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the best we’ve got. The wind is light offshore from the east at 15 km/h, which will leave the surface clean. You’ll be looking at small 2 ft waves from the west with a modest 9-second period. The combined energy is weak (113). It’s beginner-friendly, consistent, and the crowds are only sometimes around. The water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing unusual.
Outside of that, the first week is a mess. Friday the 21st is a total loss with a fresh cross-shore wind from the north at 30 km/h and lumpy chop. Sunday the 23rd is clean but tiny – 1 ft from the southwest with a long 14-second period, which is a groundswell but so small it’s pointless. Monday the 24th sees strong offshore winds from the east at 40 km/h, making it clean but impossible to paddle into with only 1.0 ft of swell. Tuesday the 25th is clean but again tiny and weak.
Things get uglier from Wednesday the 26th. A stormy pattern kicks in with a 5 ft swell from the south, but the period is just 6 seconds – short and weak energy (196). The wind turns cross-shore and then cross-onshore, and by Thursday the 27th we’ve got messy, choppy conditions. The weekend of the 29th and 30th sees solid 8 ft swell from the west, but it’s onshore wind and blown out. That’s kite-surfing territory, not for paddling. The second week starts with more onshore wind and poor conditions, tapering off into tiny, weak swell by the 1st of September.
The final few days of the forecast show a little clean-up on the 4th and 5th of September, but with 1.0 ft to 4 ft of weak, short-period swell, it’s just not happening. Bottom line: if you’re desperate, the only half-decent window is early on Saturday the 22nd. Otherwise, save your energy.
Rusty.
