The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a proper look at what’s on offer for Sennen Cove. I’m not gonna lie to you, this 16-day window is a real struggle. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak swell and a whole lot of wind that’s just not playing ball. The first real glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t even show up until Monday morning, the 20th of July, and even then it’s a bit of a mess. We’re looking at almost no surf at all from now until then, a proper gap of a couple of days with nothing worth paddling out for.
The water is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your nuts off while you’re waiting.
Alright, let’s get into it. The first day that’s even worth a mention is Monday the 20th, morning session. We’ve got a tiny 1.0ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 11 seconds. That period is decent, a nice long groundswell, but the height is just a ripple. The wind is light from the NE, giving us a clean cross-offshore breeze, which is about the only positive. The combined energy is weak at 45. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for every little bump. Honestly, it’s more of a longboard or a foiler’s game.
Tuesday the 21st morning is a similar story. The swell picks up a little to 3ft, but it’s short-period windswell from the north at only 6 seconds, so it’ll be soft and crumbly. The wind is light from the ENE, keeping it clean with a cross-offshore flow. The combined energy is still weak at 73. It’s a step up from Monday, but it’s not exactly going to get the heart racing.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums for days. The wind stays onshore or cross-shore, the swell drops back to nothing, and we’re just waiting. The only real standout, and I’m using the term loosely, is the absolute end of the forecast. On Tuesday the 28th of July, the afternoon session sees the swell finally show some life. The swell height jumps to 3ft from the west, with a period of 10 seconds. This is a proper groundswell, and the combined energy hits 228, which is moderate wave energy. But here’s the killer: the wind is howling onshore from the west at 28 mph. It’s going to be a messy, blown-out, choppy mess. This is a day for experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. The water is going to be a washing machine with that wind and swell. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than anything for a paddle board.
Wednesday the 29th of July continues the same theme. The morning has 3ft swell from the west at 10 seconds, with onshore winds from the WNW at 37 mph. The combined energy is 218, so there’s power there, but it’s a near-gale blowing straight into it. Absolute chaos. Not recommended for anyone.
So, what’s the best on offer? Honestly, there’s no true standout. The best of a bad bunch is probably Tuesday the 21st morning, with that 3ft of north swell and clean cross-offshore wind. It’s small, weak, and not very consistent, but it’s the only time you’ll have a clean surface to play on. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. For the rest of it, keep your board in the car and wait for a better forecast. This is a big blank run for the area, and it’s one of those times where you just have to sit it out.
Rusty.
