Right then, grab a coffee, let’s see what the next couple of weeks have got for us. To be honest, it’s a bit of a slow burner out here. We’re looking at a lot of days with weak, short-period windswell and less-than-ideal winds, so don’t expect any all-time sessions. The key is picking the right windows.
The main spot on the menu is Sennen Cove. Water temp is sitting around 62°, which is about 2° warmer than average for this time of year – a nice little bonus for your toes.
We kick off on Saturday the 4th but honestly, it’s a write-off. We’ve got a 4ft west swell coming in with a stiff 12 mph WNW onshore wind. The combined energy is only 239 (moderate), and the report calls it poor. Not worth a paddle.
Sunday the 5th is more of the same – 3ft to 4ft of west-northwest swell, but cross-onshore winds keep things messy and choppy. No go.
Monday the 6th morning is our first real glimmer of hope. The swell drops to 3ft from the west with an 8-second period, but the big news is the wind: *dead flat calm, glassy.* The combined energy is only 124 (weak) so it’s not going to have much punch, but if you’ve got a longboard, that morning session will be clean as a whistle. The afternoon goes onshore again, so make the most of the dawn.
Tuesday the 7th morning is another glass-off, with 2ft of west swell (89 weak energy). Again, tiny but perfectly clean for logging. Afternoon gets a little cross-shore bump.
Wednesday the 8th is quietly promising. We’ve got 3ft of west-northwest swell with a 10-second period, and light easterly offshore winds in the morning, swinging to a light cross-off in the arvo. Combined energy is 133 (weak), but clean conditions on a small, longer-period wave will make it feel better than the height suggests. This is a solid option for a small-wave cruiser.
Thursday the 9th through Friday the 10th stay in that 3ft to 3ft range, but the wind is moderate and cross/cross-off, so it’s not doing much for quality.
Now, Saturday the 11th afternoon is where things get spicy. The swell jumps to 6ft – but it’s from the north with a short, nasty 6-second period. The combined energy hits 386 (moderate-strong), so there’s a lot of lumpy water moving. The wind is a gentle east-northeasterly cross-off, and the report says “expect good surf conditions”. That 6ft is getting up there for the average punter, and with a period that short, it’ll be a bit fat and dumpy, but for the rippers on a bigger board, it might offer some fun, punchy walls. It’s the best energy we see all period.
Sunday the 12th gets blown out by a fresh 22 mph easterly. The surf drops off a cliff.
The whole second week, from Monday the 13th through to Sunday the 19th, is grim. We have a few days with 2ft to 3ft of west swell, but the wind is either strong offshore (hard to paddle into) or onshore and choppy. There’s a spike on the 19th with a 6ft south-southwest swell and 568 combined energy, but it’s a full-on 16 mph westerly onshore. That setup? Unless you’re towing a kite, leave it. Not for surfing.
Best bet: If you’ve got a log, the glassy mornings on the 6th and 7th are your best clean fun. For the only real standout with some grunt, pin Saturday afternoon the 11th – that 6ft of north swell with clean cross-off wind is as good as it gets in this run. It’s only a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
Stay stoked.
