The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
We’re looking at Sennen Cove, and to be honest, it’s a rough start. There’s a fair bit of swell early on, but it’s coming in with a nasty cross-onshore wind that’s just gonna ruin it. The first real chance to even think about paddling out doesn’t come until the morning of Saturday the 22nd. The swell drops right down to 2ft from the west, but the wind swings offshore from the north-east, cleaning it right up. The wave energy is weak (104). It’s tiny, but it’s clean. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Sunday the 23rd morning is another small one, with a 1.0ft swell from the south-southwest, but the wind is offshore from the east-northeast, meaning it’s glassy. The period is a very long 14 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell, which makes it more likely to be a bit too straight for a beach break, but it’ll be clean. The energy is very weak (54). The afternoon is similar, with a 1ft swell from the south-west, offshore wind from the east, and clean (90 energy).
Monday the 24th is a write-off. There’s swell, but it’s tiny, and the wind is a screaming offshore that’s going to make it almost impossible to get into anything. The energy is 57, but it’s not worth it.
We get a little bump on Tuesday the 25th afternoon, with a 2ft swell from the south-southwest, period of 9 seconds, and a cross-offshore wind. The energy is moderate (126), but it’s still a marginal day.
The standout of the whole period, if you can wait, is the morning of Wednesday the 26th. The swell jumps up to 7ft from the south-west, with a very short period of 8 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit of a mushburger. But the wind is cross-offshore and it’s clean. The energy is strong (579). That’s a solid, surfable wave, but at over 5ft, it’s getting a bit much for beginners. The water’s still about average temp.
Thursday the 27th morning holds some promise, with a 5ft swell from the west at 10 seconds and a gentle cross-shore, but it’s not a clean standout. The morning of the 30th of August has a 8ft swell from the west-southwest, with a cross-offshore wind and clean conditions, but it’s a while away and the forecast is less certain.
The biggest swell of the lot hits on the morning of Monday the 31st of August: a 12ft monster from the west, with a period of 11 seconds. The energy is immense (2956). But the wind is cross-onshore and lumpy. That’s for experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. The same goes for the afternoon with 10ft and onshore wind.
In short, the best bet is the morning of Wednesday the 26th. It’s the biggest clean option we’ve got. The other days are either too small, too windy, or both. There’s a few days of tiny clean surf at the start, but nothing to get excited about. The second week is a bit of a mess, with strong winds and big, lumpy swell.
Rusty out.
