Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Breakwater-St Ives over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for The Breakwater-St Ives for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at this forecast and it’s a bit of a tough one. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet for decent waves. The first real stretch of the 16-day window is a write-off. We’ve got a solid run of poor surf conditions from the start all the way through to the 22nd of July. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is just not playing ball – it’s cross-on or cross-shore for the vast majority of that time. The water temp is sitting right on average for the time of year at 60°F, so nothing unusual there.
There’s a glimmer of something on the 23rd of July, Thursday. It’s a bit of a late bloomer. The morning kicks off with a 6ft swell from the WSW. The wind is a fresh cross-offshore breeze, which should keep the lines reasonably clean. The combined energy of all swells is moderate (346). That’s a bit of a chunky, short-period swell though, only 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a wall of white water rather than a proper groundswell. It’s not one for the beginners at that size.
Then, the afternoon of the 23rd is the real standout. The swell pushes up to 10ft from the WSW. Now, that’s big, expert-only territory. The wind is a stiff cross-offshore breeze, keeping it clean. The combined energy ramps up to a hefty 1441, which is a lot of power. But the period is still only 9 seconds, so it’s going to be a powerful, lumpy, and heavy wave. It’s a point break, which is a good thing here, as it’ll handle that power better than a beach break would. Because it’s a point, it might just line up okay. But you’ll need to be a charger to handle it. It’s a long way off, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but that’s the only window of real action.
Before that, from the 15th to the 22nd, the swell is tiny, rarely cracking 2ft, and the winds are all over the shop. The 19th afternoon sees a pulse of energy (103) but the wind is onshore and the swell is only 2ft, making it a messy, blown-out affair. The 22nd afternoon has a bit more swell energy (178) with a 3ft swell, but again, the wind is a messy cross-shore.
So, the long and short of it is: be patient. The surf is flat or poor for nearly two weeks. The only real shot is that afternoon of the 23rd of July, but you’d better be experienced and ready for a big, powerful, short-period swell. I’ll be watching that one closely.
Rusty.
