The Lowdown
IMPERIAL
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you from the start. The 16-day window for The Breakwater-St Ives is a bit of a tough pill to swallow, especially for the next week or so. There’s no surf worth paddling out for until we hit the very end of August, so you’re looking at a solid 10-day gap of pretty ordinary, choppy, or flat conditions. Hang in there, because things might finally turn.
For now, the first proper hope on the horizon lands on Sunday the 30th of August. That morning, we’ve got a 5ft swell rolling in from the west with an 8-second period, and the wind is light and offshore straight from the south. That’s a clean look for The Breakwater-St Ives. The combined energy is moderate at 272, and with clean conditions and lighter winds, this could be a real gem. It’s inconsistent here, so don’t expect non-stop sets, but the quality should be there for the patient surfer.
Then Monday the 31st of August morning picks up with 6ft from the west-southwest and a short 6-second period, still with offshore wind and moderate energy (213). It’s surfable, but the period is short and a bit weak. By the afternoon, things get serious – a solid 10ft swell from the southwest with moderate offshore wind and strong wave energy (1020). That’s big. At over 8ft, it’s really only for experts. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it might be a bit walled up and unruly.
The best of the whole run? Tuesday the 1st of September morning. We’re looking at a 10ft west swell with a 10-second period, clean cross-offshore winds, and very strong energy (1555). That’s proper groundswell with long period, which means longer gaps between sets but way more punch. For a point break like The Breakwater-St Ives, that’s a dream setup. It’s big, though – strictly for experienced surfers. Keep an eye on this one.
The Breakwater-St Ives (St Ives) is your only spot in the data, and it’s a point break that’s fairly exposed to the northwest swell. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Remember, this is long-range stuff, so treat the Tuesday the 1st call as a promising possibility, not a sure thing. The first few days are a write-off – just wind and chop. Stay patient, and when that Sunday the 30th morning window arrives, you might just score.
Rusty.
