The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's have a look at what's on offer down at The Breakwater-St Ives over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the start of this run is pretty grim. Through Sunday the 23rd and into the end of the month, it's looking flat and messy. We're looking at tiny little waves, mostly under 3 feet, and the wind is all over the place, mostly cross or cross-onshore, just killing any chance of a decent shape. You'll be sitting out there on a log for nothing. There's a gap here of several days with nothing worth paddling for.
Things start to show a pulse of life on Thursday the 27th afternoon. The wind finally clocks around to a clean offshore from the south, and we see a jump in swell to 5 feet from the WSW. The combined energy is moderate (370), but it's got a short period of 8 seconds, so it'll be a bit soft and lumpy. Still, it's the first real opportunity.
Now, Friday the 28th is a write-off again with onshore junk, but then Saturday the 29th morning gets interesting, if you're keen for a challenge. We're looking at a solid 10 feet swell from the west with clean cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is strong (1143), but at this size, this isn't for the beginners. That's expert territory, and with consistent power, it'll be a proper handful.
The real standout in this outlook, the one to circle on your calendar, is looking like Friday the 4th of September. That morning, we've got 10 feet of WSW swell with a period of 9 seconds, and clean cross-offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is very strong (1348), so there'll be some serious welter on offer. Conditions are rated as marginal, likely due to the size and tide, but for the experienced crew, this has the makings of a proper session with clean, powerful lines.
Heading into that first weekend of September, the swell hangs in there, but the winds get a bit messy, mixing in cross-shore again. There's a lot of energy in the water, but the quality will be harder to find. It stays big – in the 7.5 to 10 feet range – so keep it for the big dogs. The crowd at The Breakwater-St Ives can sometimes be an issue, but on a day with that much size and power, it tends to spread out a bit.
Bottom line: The first week is a write-off. Your best bet is the morning of Friday, September 4th, for the biggest, cleanest swell of the run. Get on it.
