The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, or a beer. Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer for The Breakwater-St Ives over the next couple of weeks. We'll go straight into it.
Straight up, it's a tough run ahead. The Breakwater-St Ives is an inconsistent point break, and this forecast is a long, quiet stretch. There are no true standouts, and no waves worth paddling out for if you’re looking for a proper session. The first sixteen days are basically a write-off for any decent surf.
Looking at the start of the period, from Sunday the 19th through to the end of July, it’s just small, weak, and messy. The swell is tiny—mostly under 3 ft—with short-period windswell that lacks any punch. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the surface bumpy. The combined swell energy is in the low two-digit figures like 41 or 68, which is pretty weak. There's a tiny pulse around Tuesday the 28th where the swell hits 7 ft, but it's a short-period windswell at 7 seconds, straight onshore from the north, and the energy jumps to 861. That looks more like a windy, choppy mess than anything rideable.
Moving into the first week of August, the wind improves to a cross-offshore direction, which is a plus. We see a bit of a lift in swell energy too, hitting the 200s (208 and 265) on the 1st and 2nd of August, with wave heights around 3 ft to 5 ft. The period is still short though, around 8-10 seconds. So while it will look cleaner, the waves will likely be weak and fat. The spot's optimum swell direction is from the northwest, and we get some WNW and W swell, so the direction isn't completely off, but the size and period just aren't there to make this point break work. Given the lack of quality and the persistent onshore flow during the bigger pulses, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Honestly, for a spot that’s already inconsistent, this is a normal blank run. It’s just one of those times where the forecasts will likely need to change to give us anything worth getting wet for.
Rusty.
