The Lowdown
Alright, let's break down what's coming for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it's a pretty quiet stretch for The Breakwater-St Ives. The forecast is showing a lot of small, choppy conditions with onshore winds, so there's no rush to get the wetsuit on. There's a real flat spell to start.
The first pulse of swell that might get your attention is on the 25th of July. It's a Saturday, with a moderate cross-onshore breeze from the NW at about 15 mph. The swell bumps up to around 4 ft from the WNW, but the period is a short 6 to 7 seconds. That's a lot of wind chop for not much power. The combined energy is moderate, so there's some juice in the water, but it's going to be a messy, lumpy affair. This isn't going to be pretty, but it's the biggest we've seen.
Then, on the 27th of July, Monday morning and afternoon, things get a bit more interesting. The wind swings around to a cross-offshore breeze from the SW at 15 mph. That's a game-changer for cleanliness. The swell drops to about 3 ft, but it's from the W with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is moderate. The wave comment even says "clean". This is your best window. It's not big, but it'll be the cleanest, most rideable surf of the whole period. The Breakwater-St Ives is a point break, so this smaller, cleaner swell with a cross-off wind is exactly what you want. It's intermediate-friendly, too. Just be aware that crowds are possible here at times.
The water temperature is sitting at 63°, which is about 2° above the norm, so pretty average for this time of year.
For the rest of the time, it's a lot of nothing, or onshore junk. The 30th of July afternoon has a spike of 5 ft from the SW with an 8-second period, but it's blowing 22 mph onshore from the N. That's a kiter's dream, not a surfer's.
So, the standout is that Monday the 27th. The clean cross-off wind and small, tidy swell will make for the most enjoyable session. The bigger stuff on the 25th is there, but it'll be a battle.
Rusty.
