Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening with the surf over the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak stretch ahead for The Breakwater-St Ives. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf conditions that just won’t let up. The water temperature is sitting at 60°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there at least.
We start off Monday morning, July 6th, with a tiny 3 ft swell from the WNW and a short period of 8 seconds. There’s a light cross wind making things messy. The energy is weak, just 104. Honestly, the whole first week is a write-off. Every single session from Monday the 6th right through to Sunday the 12th gets a "poor surf conditions" tag. Swells stay under 3 ft, the wind is never clean, and the energy is low. On Sunday the 12th, it gets really ugly with an easterly wind hitting 22 to 25 mph and the swell dropping to just 1.0 ft. That’s not surf, that’s just a windy lake.
Then we roll into the second week, and I’m sorry to say it doesn’t get much better. From Monday the 13th to Sunday the 19th of July, we’ve got more of the same – small waves, messy winds, and not a single decent window. The swell energy plummets, with some readings as low as 10. The only glimmer of hope is a brief moment on the morning of Friday, July 17th, where we see a light offshore wind from the SSE and clean conditions, but the wave is only 1.0 ft. It’s a gut feeling, but that’s not going to give you a ride.
Even the long range into Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st of July doesn’t really deliver. There’s a pulse that sees the swell jump to 7 ft on Tuesday the 21st, with moderate energy of 357, but it’s onshore wind from the north at 16 mph, turning it into a choppy mess. That’s one for the experts only, if anyone’s mad enough. And that 7 ft is too big for beginners, for sure.
So there you have it. Over two weeks and not a single standout. The Breakwater is being stubborn. We’ve got a long gap of consistent "poor" calls, and it’s just one of those periods where the forecast isn’t giving us anything to work with. Keep your gear dry and check back in a few days – things can change.
Rusty.
