The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’re looking at The Breakwater-St Ives, a point break, and honestly, the outlook is a tough one. For the first week and a half, there’s really nothing to get excited about. The surf is consistently poor or very small, and I’m talking about a dry spell that stretches from August 20th all the way through to the end of the month. You’ll be looking at flat, weak, or messy conditions with either onshore winds or just not enough swell to make it worth the paddle.
The water temp is sitting around 64°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the 28th of August. Friday afternoon sees a bit of a pulse, with a 5ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 8 seconds, and while it’s clean, it’s not the kind of quality that will have you calling in sick. That same day, the morning has a 3ft swell with a 9-second period and a decent cross-offshore wind, but again, it’s just okay.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 29th of August. We’ve got a 8ft swell from the W, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is up at 649 (moderate), so there’s some push. The wind is cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. This is for the experienced crew only – at 8ft, it’s too big for beginners. The swell direction is from the W, which is a shift from the optimum NW, but it’s still the biggest push we see.
The 3rd of September is a bit of a wildcard. Thursday afternoon shows a 7ft swell from the WSW with a 8-second period, but it’s blowing a near gale from the SW. It’s clean, but almost 31 mph winds will make it a battle. That’s more of a kite day than a paddle day, if you ask me.
So, for the best on offer, I’d point you to the 29th of August morning at The Breakwater-St Ives. It’s not perfect, but it’s the biggest of the run and the only one with some real punch. Don’t get your hopes up too high, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
Rusty.
