Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim picture for The Breakwater-St Ives. This is a point break that needs a decent swell from the northwest to really work, but we’re looking at a long stretch of mostly small, messy, and wind-affected surf. The first solid recommendation doesn’t come until the 24th of July.
For the first week, from Thursday the 9th right through to the 23rd of July, the surf is practically non-existent. The swell is tiny, mostly below 3 ft, with a weak combined energy that rarely gets into three figures for most of that period. The wind is a constant problem, coming from the east and northeast, blowing cross-on shore or straight onshore, keeping the surface choppy and bumpy. You’ll be scratching around for a knee-high dribbler if you’re lucky. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing to complain about there, but it’s not going to tempt you in.
There is a gap of about 15 days where there’s nothing worth getting excited about. The only true standout, and it’s a long way off, is on the morning of Friday the 24th of July. The forecast shows a pulse of swell from the west-northwest building to 6 ft, which is a respectable size for this spot. The combined energy jumps to 259 (moderate), suggesting there’s a bit more power in the water. The wind is light from the northwest, which is cross-on but very light, so the surface could be clean with just small wind ripples. This is definitely the best on offer for the whole period. For a point break, that northwest swell direction is a good match, and the 6-second period is short, so it’ll be a bit of a crumbly, fat wave, but it’s the only time you’ll see anything with a bit of push. Keep in mind this is a long-range call, so it’s promising but not locked in.
Given the constant onshore flow and the small, weak surf for the majority of the forecast, the setup here looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer for most of these days.
