The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m looking at the next 16 days for The Breakwater-St Ives, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch. We’re looking at a solid two-week gap here with pretty much nothing worth paddling out for. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th of July, and even then, it’s not a barnstormer.
The water’s sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small blessing.
From now until Thursday the 23rd, it’s a write-off. We’ve got tiny, weak swell, cross-shore or onshore winds, and the combined energy is barely tickling the 50-80 mark (moderate energy at best, often weak). The swell is small, the period is short, and the wind is just messy. It’s a flat spell with a chop on top. Not worth a second look.
Then, out of the blue, Friday the 24th of July morning shows a glimmer. The Breakwater-St Ives (point break) wakes up with a clean 4ft swell from the WNW, with a solid 12-second period. The wind goes glassy – dead calm. That’s a rare combo. The combined energy jumps to 369 (moderate), which gives the waves some push. This is the standout by a mile. The swell direction is NW, and the optimum here is NW, so it’s lining up proper. It’s an inconsistent spot, so don’t expect a conveyor belt, but when a set rolls in, it could be a fun little wave. The water is a touch warmer than average, so the wetsuit won’t be as thick.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th have some size, but the wind gets messy. Sunday morning the 26th has a 6ft swell from the west with a short 7-second period and clean cross-offshore wind. That’s a lot of water moving fast, but the short period means it’ll be a bit dumpy. Over 5ft, so it’s not for beginners. The combined energy hits 381 (moderate).
Monday the 27th of July sees the biggest swell of the outlook – 8ft from the west, but the period is still short at 9 seconds. The combined energy is a whopping 847 (strong). This is a lot of power, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s gonna be a bumpy, close-out mess. Over 8ft, so experts only, and even then, it’s not pretty.
So, the one true standout is Friday the 24th of July morning. Get on it if you can. After that, it’s a mixed bag of wind and chop.
