The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for The Breakwater-St Ives.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, frustrating gap of absolutely nothing worth paddling out for from Wednesday the 15th of July all the way through to Monday the 27th of July. Seriously, a solid two weeks of poor surf conditions. The waves are tiny, the wind is mostly wrong, and it’s just one of those spells where you’re better off waxing your board and waiting. The water temp is sitting at 62.4°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
But, let’s talk about the light at the end of the tunnel, because it’s a beauty. The real stand-out action finally fires up on Tuesday the 29th of July. We get a solid push of W swell, and while the conditions are still not perfect, the wave energy jumps hugely. Tuesday morning sees the swell climbing to 6.9 ft out of the W, with a decent 9-second period. The combined energy hits a massive 671 (strong to very strong wave energy), but with a light N breeze it’s clean enough. Just a heads up – at over 6 ft, this is strictly for the experts. This spot is a point break that needs the optimum NW direction, but it’s fairly exposed to W swell, so it’ll pick up plenty of that energy. It can be inconsistent here, so don’t expect non-stop sets.
The Thursday the 30th of July morning is another promising window, with the swell easing to a still-chunky 4.6 ft from the W. The energy is still solid at 311 (moderate wave energy), and with a light cross-onshore breeze, it’ll be a bit bumpy but rideable. For intermediate surfers, this is probably your best bet of the whole outlook – it’s a more manageable size. After that, the onshores start to hurt the quality again.
So, bottom line: there’s a two-week drought, then a late-in-the-game pulse. The Tuesday the 29th is the only standout for the big-wave chargers, and the Thursday morning is the call for the rest of us. It’s been a quiet run, but this area can turn around fast – forecasts change. For now, keep your eyes on those later dates.
