The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk in feet, miles, and degrees. I’ve been looking at the next 16 days for the St Ives area, and it’s a slow burner. There’s a solid 10-day gap right at the start where there’s just nothing worth paddling for. The wind is rubbish, and the swell is tiny and weak.
The first real chance we get, and the only one worth highlighting, is on the morning of Monday, July 27th. We’re talking about The Breakwater-St Ives (a point break in the local sub-region). The water temp is about 63°F, which is pretty average for this time of year. The combined energy of the swell is 211 (moderate energy), so there’s something to work with. We’ll see a 5ft swell from the West, with a clean cross-offshore breeze. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it won’t be super powerful, but after a week of flatness, a clean, rideable wave is a godsend. The crowds here are only *sometimes* an issue, so you might have a bit of room.
The afternoon of the same day gets a little bigger—6ft from the West, with a 7-second period and energy up to 337. The wind turns cross-shore, which will put a little texture on the face, but it’s still fun.
The week after gets a bit wild. On Tuesday, July 29th, a messy 8ft swell from the WSW hits, but it’s blown to bits by a strong onshore wind. The energy is 527 (strong), but the quality is a write-off. The next day, Wednesday, July 30th, the swell goes huge. The morning is 13ft from the WNW (energy 3703), and the afternoon is still 12ft (energy 2136). The wind is light and offshore, so the conditions are perfect, but that size is for experts only. The data says it’s too big for this break, so it’s probably just a massive, dangerous mess.
The last couple of days, the 31st of July and the 1st of August, settle back down to 8ft dropping to 4ft with cleaner cross-offshore breezes, but it’s nothing special.
The bottom line: the only standout moment is the morning of Monday, July 27th at The Breakwater-St Ives. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the cleanest thing we’ve got. Don’t miss it.
