The Lowdown
Alright, grab a cuppa, let's have a look at what's on the table for us.
We're looking at The Breakwater-St Ives, and to be brutally honest, it's a pretty grim start. The next week and a half is looking like a write-off, with a real dry spell. The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is bang on normal for the time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're staring at flat, lumpy water.
The first proper glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Thursday, August 27th. We get a pulse of west-northwest swell coming in at around 5ft to 5ft, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy hits 403. That's a moderate energy, but more importantly, we'll have a gentle to moderate offshore wind from the south and south-southeast. That means clean, lined-up waves. For a spot that's inconsistent and can get crowded, this is the one to circle on the calendar. The swell is coming from the west-northwest, which is a great direction for this break.
Then, hold onto your boardies, because September 3rd – Thursday morning – is looking like a proper standout. We're seeing a big southwest swell forecast to hit 13ft, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is a massive 2538. This is a strong, powerful swell. The kicker is we'll have a fresh offshore wind from the south-southeast, meaning the face will be clean. But, and this is a big but, at 13ft, this is strictly for experts only. The period is short, so it'll be a bit dumpy and powerful. This is a long-range call, so it's promising but less certain.
Between now and the 27th, it's a whole lot of nothing. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and the swell is either tiny or junky. There's a brief window of clean conditions on the 25th and 26th, but the swell is too small to get excited about. The east wind on the 24th is a strong breeze, creating a messy cross-chop. That's more kite-surfing territory than paddle surfing.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off, the 27th offers a clean, fun-sized option, and September 3rd is a big, powerful, expert-only swell that's worth keeping an eye on.
