Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Breakwater-St Ives over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down for The Breakwater-St Ives.
Over the next couple of weeks, it’s a real rough patch. This is a point break that doesn’t break consistently, and it’s mostly open to the northwest. The big problem is the wind. For the first ten days or so, it’s coming out of the east and northeast, blowing cross or cross-onshore, making the surf bumpy and choppy. The swell is real small, most of the time under 3 feet, and the energy is weak – numbers like 135, 121, even down to 39 (combined energy). The water is about 62°, which is average for the time of year.
Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th are a no-go – poor conditions, no score. Saturday the 12th is the same story, just windier. Sunday the 13th sees a spike to 5 feet, but it’s from the east with a pathetic 4-second period and strong east winds. That’s just messy windswell.
Monday the 14th through Thursday the 17th is more of the same: tiny surf and poor conditions. On Wednesday the 16th afternoon, the wind goes glassy – 5 km/h from the ESE – but with only 1 foot of swell, you’re not going anywhere.
There’s a pulse around Saturday the 19th. Swell hits 6 feet from the north, but it’s onshore and short period. The combined energy jumps to 363, but it’s bumpy and blown out.
The only real standout is Wednesday the 22nd morning. You get 4 feet of swell from the WNW with a 9-second period – that’s a groundswell, good for this point break. The wind is light from the southeast, giving you clean conditions. The combined energy is a solid 264, and it’s the best score in the whole forecast. Crowds are possible here, so expect company.
After that, it’s back to poor. There’s a bigger swell on Friday the 24th – 6 feet from the WSW – but the wind is cross and the period is short, so it’s lumpy.
So, honestly, don’t bother for the first week and a half. Wednesday the 22nd morning is your only real chance to get a few clean ones. Keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
