Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s going on. I gotta be straight with you—this is a bleak stretch for The Breakwater-St Ives. We’re looking at over two weeks with absolutely nothing to get excited about.
The first window of opportunity doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 27th. Between now and then, it’s all poor surf. The wind is mostly cross or blowing onshore, the swell is tiny—often under 1 ft—and the period is short, so the waves are just weak and messy. Not a single session gets a green light.
Water temp is sitting at 63°F with a 2°F anomaly, so it’s a bit warmer than usual for the time of year—nice on the skin, but that’s the only silver lining.
On Sunday the 27th, there’s a brief flicker. That morning, we see a 10 ft swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, and combined wave energy hits 1773 (strong). The wind is a light cross-shore from the WNW, so the surface will have a bit of texture. Since it’s a point break, that longer-period groundswell should wrap in decently, but with a swell over 8 ft, this is for experts only. This spot is inconsistent, so you might be sitting out there a long time between sets. And yeah, crowds are possible.
By Sunday afternoon, it drops to 8 ft and the wind shifts onshore from the NNW, so the window closes fast. That’s your one shot—a morning for experienced surfers who don’t mind waiting.
Honestly, for the first two weeks, leave the board at home. Some of those bigger, choppier days around the 23rd and 26th might be more fun for kite surfing than paddle surfing. For us wave riders, it’s a waiting game.
Hang in there—forecasts can shift, and July usually doesn’t stay this quiet forever.
Rusty.
