The Lowdown

Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak run for the Breakwater. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off, really. There’s a solid gap right from the start with nothing worth paddling out for. The first hint of anything that might get you excited doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th of July. That’s over a week and a half of flat or poor conditions.

The Breakwater-St Ives (point) is usually a bit inconsistent anyway, and this forecast proves it. For the first eleven days, it’s just poor surf, tiny heights, and messy wind. You’ll see a few glassy mornings on the 17th and 18th, but the swell is so small – like 2ft to 2ft – it’s barely a ripple. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive.

Now, the only real standout comes on Friday the 24th of July. That morning, we finally see a pulse of 6ft swell from the SW, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy gets up to a moderate 308, and the wind is cross-offshore, cleaning it right up. This is an expert-only zone though – that wave height is over the limit for a learner. The swell direction is from the SW, which is a bit off from the optimum NW, but the clean conditions and the jump in size make it the one to look at. The afternoon of the 24th is similar, 6ft from the SW, but the wind picks up to a fresh breeze. Saturday the 25th drops a bit to 5ft, still clean.

For the rest of the window, it’s back to poor surf. The wind gets strong and offshore around the 26th and 27th, but the swell drops right back to under 3ft, so it’s just a lot of effort for not much.

So, if you’re desperate, you’ve got that one morning on the 24th of July. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for the next swell.

Rusty.
