The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for The Breakwater-St Ives (point).
Right now, the next two weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. For the first week and a half, it’s mostly all pretty quiet. Surf is small, conditions are ordinary, and we’ve got some blustery days where the wind will be a problem. From Sunday 23rd through to Tuesday 1st of September, it’s pretty much a write-off for any decent waves. There’s a long stretch there where the swell is either too weak or the wind just fouls things up. On the morning of Friday 28th August, the swell bumps up a bit to 5ft from the SW, and the combined energy reaches 328 (moderate energy), but the wind is light cross-onshore – it’s marginal at best.
The real standout, and the one worth circling on the calendar, lands on Sunday 6th September. That afternoon we’re looking at a solid 8ft swell from the W, period 9 seconds, and the wind swings offshore out of the S. The combined energy is a hefty 1119 (strong). This is a proper, clean, powerful swell for the point. It’s going to be a big, punchy wave – seriously good shape. That’s the day to get excited about. Be warned, at 8ft it’s for experienced surfers only. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect company.
The days leading up to that – from Thursday 3rd September morning – start to build nicely. You’ll see 5ft-6ft from the W with offshore winds and clean conditions, and the energy is solid (255-474, moderate to strong). That Thursday afternoon and Friday morning (4th September) are both very surfable, with offshore winds, clean faces, and moderate energy. It’s not quite the standout, but it’s good surf.
There is a brief moment on Monday 31st August morning with a little 3ft swell from the WSW, light ESE cross-offshore wind, and clean conditions (energy 133, moderate), but it’s small – just something to stretch the arms. The glassy afternoon that day is also tiny at 2ft.
Wave periods are mostly short (6-9 seconds) across the board, so the waves will be a bit softer and more frequent, not the long, drawn-out lines of a groundswell. The point setup should handle that fine, though.
Water temp feels about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
So, the big call: Sunday 6th September afternoon is the one. Get ready for a strong, clean pulse from the W with offshore wind. That’s your winner. The rest is slim pickings, but the close of the outlook looks much more promising.
Rusty.
