The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s size up the St Ives stretch.
We’re starting off with a real dry spell. The Breakwater-St Ives is an inconsistent spot, and it’s showing it. From Thursday the 20th right through the end of the month, the surf is small, messy, or blown out with cross-onshore breezes. You’re looking at more than a week of flat, choppy, or swept-out conditions. Don’t bother.
The first glimmer of something comes on Thursday the 27th of August. The morning brings a clean 4ft wave from the west, with a 10-second period. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the surface will be tidy. The combined energy is moderate (216). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. You’ll get a few turns in.
Then the real beast shows up. On Saturday the 29th of August, the swell just goes off. The morning has a 10ft west-southwest swell with a short 8-second period, cross-offshore wind, and a massive energy (1302). The afternoon is bigger: 13ft from the west, 10-second period, and a colossal 2730 combined energy. The wind turns cross-shore, and the forecast says it’s way too big for this point break. That’s expert territory only. Sunday the 30th is the same story: 12ft west swell in the morning (2039 energy) and 10ft in the afternoon (1469 energy), both with cross-offshore winds. It’s going to be a big, powerful, and dangerous week. If you’re not a pro, stay on the beach.
The water temp is 64°F, which is just about normal for this time of year.
For the standout, it’s the last weekend of August, but only for the big-wave crew. For everyone else, Thursday the 27th is the only window for a little session, but it’s nothing special. It’s a long, quiet wait.
Rusty.
