The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
First up, we’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead. The Breakwater-St Ives is a classic point break, but it’s going to be a tough watch for the first week and a half. We’re looking at a dry spell from Tuesday, 14th July, all the way through to Friday, 24th July. That's ten days with nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the wind is constantly cross or onshore, making a mess of things. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 63°F, but that’s the only highlight for a while. This spot is inconsistent, and this run proves it.
Things finally start to flicker on Friday, 24th July. The afternoon shows a glimmer of hope – a 3ft swell from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds and a clean offshore breeze from the S. The combined energy is moderate (178), and the conditions are described as "surfable but very ordinary," so it’s not a classic, but it’s a start. The wind is gentle and offshore, so it will be cleaner than anything we’ve seen.
Saturday, 25th July, is a bit of a tease. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the W with a short period of 7 seconds, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SE (166 energy). The afternoon is the real standout for the whole run: glassy conditions with a 3ft swell from the W. That’s a rare moment of peace. The energy is moderate (149). It’s not big, but it’ll be the cleanest, most user-friendly surf of the entire forecast. This is the one to circle.
The standout window, however, is Sunday, 26th July, into Monday, 27th July. Sunday morning delivers a solid 4ft swell from the W with a 9-second period, and a moderate offshore wind from the S, giving clean conditions. The combined energy is strong (292). This is where it gets good. By Sunday afternoon, the swell bumps up to 5ft from the W with a 10-second period, but the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph offshore from the SSE. Still clean, but the wind is strong. The energy jumps to 372.
Monday, 27th July, is the biggest push. The morning sees a 8ft swell from the W with an 8-second period, and a fresh offshore wind from the S. The energy is very strong (716). This is for experienced surfers only – it’s over 8ft and will be powerful. The afternoon holds at 7ft from the W with a 9-second period and the same fresh offshore wind (803 energy). The period is short, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and crumbly on the face, but the power is there.
Tuesday, 28th July, drops to a 7ft swell from the W with a 10-second period, still with fresh offshore winds in the morning (786 energy) and cross-offshore in the afternoon (802 energy). It’s still big, but the afternoon wind shifts to cross-offshore, keeping it rideable.
After that, it fades fast. Wednesday, 29th July, sees the swell drop to 4ft from the W, and the energy falls back to moderate (203). The wind is cross-offshore, but the quality drops off.
For the best on offer, I’m calling it: Saturday, 25th July afternoon at The Breakwater-St Ives. Glassy conditions, a 3ft swell from the W. It’s not the biggest, but it will be the most perfect, fun-sized wave of the whole 16 days. If you want power, Monday, 27th July morning is the call, but bring your big-wave board and your A-game.
Rusty, signing off.
