The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. The outlook for the next two and a half weeks is a proper test of patience. We’ve got a long, drawn-out period of flat, weak, or messy conditions before we finally see a late pulse of energy.
The reality is, for the first 13 days, from the 15th through to the 28th of July, it’s pretty grim. There’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 foot to 4 feet, and the energy is weak. You’re looking at combined swell energy readings mostly below 100, barely registering a pulse. The winds are either onshore or cross-shore, and the wave comments are all "poor surf conditions". It’s a proper dead spell.
The first real glimmer of hope, and the only standout in this entire forecast, is on the morning of Wednesday, 30 July. The Breakwater-St Ives will finally see a push of swell. We’re looking at 5 feet swell from the west, with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s a bit of a windswell bump. The combined energy will be a solid moderate 224 (weak), so there’s some push. The real winner here is the wind: a light offshore breeze from the southwest. It’ll be clean, making the most of this small, short-period swell. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only rideable window we’ve got. The water temp is 62°, which is pretty much spot on for the time of year.
The afternoon of the 30th hangs in there with a similar 5 feet swell and clean cross-offshore winds, but the morning remains the pick of the bunch. Don’t expect much else for the rest of July; the 27th has a tiny bit of energy but nothing worth the drive.
Signing off this stark report, Rusty.
