Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty comin' to you from the west side of the country. Bit of a rough outlook for our little corner here, but I'll call it as I see it.
Right now, through the start of July, we're lookin' at a grim picture for The Breakwater-St Ives. The first week’s surf is just a tease, with nothing to get excited about. Swell heights are tiny, mostly around 2ft to 3ft from the west, and the combined energy is pitiful, hanging between 81 and 136 (weak to moderate energy). The wind is a constant cross-onshore for days, choppin' it all up. The water temperature is sitting on 60°, which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
By Wednesday morning the 9th, the wind goes onshore from the north, but the surf quality is still rubbish. That trend of weak, messy surf just keeps rollin' through the weekend. Thursday the 10th sees the same story: clean-looking sky but the swell is weak and the wind is cross-onshore.
We hit a bad stretch from the 11th into the 13th, with winds crankin' from the east, building up to 28 mph. The swell drops even more, and the combined energy plummets into the 20s and 30s (weak). This is not paddle-surf territory; with that kind of wind and those tiny waves, it's more of a kite session. On Monday the 13th, we get rain showers and strong breeze – just plain ugly.
The 14th through the 16th brings the winds around to the ESE, going cross-offshore, which at least cleans it up, but the swell is still tiny—1ft to 2ft—and the energy is barely there (23 to 40). It's clean, but there's nothing to ride.
Now, there is a little flicker of hope on the 17th, Friday morning. We get a light offshore wind from the SSE, and while the swell is still only 2ft from the north, it’s clean. The combined energy nudges up to 48, but it’s still weak. Later that afternoon the wind drops to nearly nothing from the west. It’s still small, but glassy conditions might give you a few ankle-biters.
From the 18th right through to the 22nd, it's a rinse and repeat of tiny groundswell from the north and west, with onshore or cross-onshore winds keeping things messy. Only on the 22nd do we see a small lift to 4ft from the NW, but the period is a short 5-6 seconds, and the wind is onshore, so it'll be lumpy and weak (energy in the 70s-80s).
Honestly, there just isn't a single standout day in this whole 16-day span. The Breakwater is inconsistent at the best of times, and this is one of those stretches where you'd be better off waxing your board and waitin'. It's a blank run for good surf, but this area can turn around quick with a change in the weather.
Stay patient, mates.
Rusty.
