The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk it through, surfers. Rusty here, and I’ve been looking at the next 16 days for The Breakwater-St Ives – a point break that’s known for being inconsistent. And honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about. From Friday July 17 all the way through Saturday August 1, every single block says poor surf. No recommendations, no standouts. That’s a full 16-day gap, which for a spot that’s always hit-or-miss is pretty normal. Water temp is around 62.8°F, about average for the season.
The first few days – Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July – are tiny and blown out. Swell heights from 0.3m to 0.8m (1–2.6 ft), mostly north, periods 5–8 seconds. Winds are north, onshore, up to 30 km/h (18.6 mph). Combined energy is weak – 17 to 76. Monday 20 July: same story, north onshore wind, 1.0m (3.3 ft) swell, period 5 seconds, energy 93. Tuesday 21 July: a little cross-off breeze in the morning (ESE at 25 km/h, 15.5 mph), but the swell is only 0.8m (2.6 ft) from the north. Afternoon sees a 0.4m (1.3 ft) west-northwest swell with a 10-second period, but onshore north wind at 15 km/h (9.3 mph). Energy 74.
Wednesday 22 July: swell builds to 1.4m (4.6 ft) from the north, period 5 seconds, but north wind at 35 km/h (21.7 mph) onshore. Energy 137 – moderate but messy. Thursday 23 July: 1.1m (3.6 ft) in the morning, cross-onshore wind from NNE at 15 km/h (9.3 mph), energy 100. Afternoon drops to 0.9m (3 ft). Friday 24 July: tiny 0.1m (0.3 ft) from the southwest with a long 13-second period, but cross-onshore NNW wind at 20 km/h (12.4 mph). Energy 14–18 – flat.
The weekend of 25–26 July stays poor. Saturday 25: 0.8–0.9m (2.6–3 ft) from WNW, period 5 seconds, cross to cross-onshore wind, energy 42–54. Sunday 26: swell picks up to 1.3m (4.3 ft) morning, 1.6m (5.2 ft) afternoon, both from WNW, period 6 seconds, but onshore north wind at 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Energy 130–218 (moderate). Still poor.
The final week – Monday 27 July to Saturday 1 August – has the biggest swell but the wind ruins it. Monday 27: 2.0m (6.6 ft) morning, 2.2m (7.2 ft) afternoon, both from WNW, period 7–8 seconds, cross-onshore NW wind at 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Energy 350
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Very mild (max 19°C on Fri night, min 16°C on Sat afternoon). Mainly fresh winds. | Days 4-6 Weather SummaryMostly dry. Warm (max 22°C on Tue morning, min 15°C on Mon night). Winds increasing (light winds from the ENE on Tue morning, fresh winds from the N by Wed afternoon). | ||||||||||||||||||||
