The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break it down. Polzeath is the only spot in the mix, and it’s a quiet stretch ahead. The first few days are rough with cross-onshore winds and messy waves, but there’s a brief window of clean conditions for the patient surfer.

The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.

We kick off Thursday the 20th of August with rain showers and a WNW wind at 19 mph, blowing cross-on. The swell is 7 ft from the west with a 9-second period, but the energy is moderate (695) and the surf is poor. Friday the 21st is smaller and still cross-onshore, weak energy. Saturday the 22nd is the first real highlight. Morning brings clear skies, a light offshore breeze from the ENE at 6 mph, and clean conditions. The swell is tiny at 2 ft from the west, 10-second period, so it’s small but clean. Energy is weak (99). It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but don’t expect much power. Consistency is fair, but it might be a bit inconsistent.

Sunday the 23rd drops right off – tiny 0.7 ft swell with a long 14-second period, but it’s too small to ride. Clean but flat. Monday the 24th is flat with a fresh offshore wind, but nothing to get excited about. Tuesday the 25th is still flat and clean. The rest of the week stays small and mostly cross-onshore, with poor surf conditions right through to the end of the month.

There’s a gap of several days with no real surf. Then we get a bigger pulse on Monday the 31st of August. The swell jumps to 10 ft from the west, 11-second period, and the energy is very strong (2395). But the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW at 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. This is expert-only territory – big, powerful, but ugly. Beach and point setup means it could be more interesting for kite surfing than traditional paddle surfing in those conditions.

Early September stays small and cross-onshore, with nothing worth paddling out for. The whole window is pretty lean, but the cleanest, most surfable moment is Saturday the 22nd of August. It’s not a standout by any means, but it’s the best of a quiet run.

Rusty.
