The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, for the first week and a half, it’s pretty grim. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves and ordinary conditions. The water at Polzeath is sitting at 64°F with a 3°F anomaly, so it’s a touch warmer than we’d usually expect for this time of year, but that’s the only real highlight for a while.
From Wednesday the 15th right through to Thursday the 23rd, the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on. We’re talking about waves around 1ft to 3ft, with combined energy barely cracking 50 units (26-53). The swell direction is from the W or NNW, with a poor period of just 5 seconds. It’s not doing anything for us. There’s a real gap in any decent surf here.
Then on Tuesday the 21st, we get a bit of a glimmer. The morning shows a clean 3ft from the N with a light ENE cross-off breeze. The energy is still weak (57), but it’s surfable – just very ordinary. Not worth getting excited about, but it’s a paddle.
The real action, and the only standout, is way out at the end of the window. On Wednesday the 29th of July, we’ve got a solid 7ft groundswell from the W, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is pumping at 609 – that’s serious power. The morning looks clean with a light N cross breeze. That’s a big, powerful swell, and it’s going to be pushing hard. At 7ft, it’s a bit much for beginners, but for the experienced crew, that’s a proper session. Thursday the 30th still has some leftover energy at 5ft (356 units), but it’s a bit smaller and the wind shifts cross-on.
So, the long and short of it: the first 13 days are a write-off. Save your energy for the 29th at Polzeath. That’s the one. Big, strong W swell, clean morning glass – it’s a long way off, so keep your fingers crossed, but that’s your best bet.
Rusty.
