The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what's on offer for the next stretch.
First up, the water temperature at Crab Island (reef) is a toasty 69.9°F which is a staggering 8.6°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That is very unusual, mate – like swimming in a bath compared to what we'd normally expect.
Truth be told, this whole 16-day window looks pretty grim. We're staring at a long, quiet run. There's no real surf on the table to get excited about. From now through to the end of the month, it's a wasteland of tiny, weak slop. You've got a few days where the swell tries to kick, but the wind and quality just aren't there.
The only time the ocean shows a bit of life is around the afternoon of Friday, August 28th. The swell bumps up to 7.9ft from the WSW with a period of only 7 seconds. That's a lot of messy, short-period energy with wave energy at 607 (moderate to strong). Combined with a moderate cross-shore breeze and a marginal tide call, it's going to be a lumpy, bumpy mess. At that size, this is really only for the experts, and honestly, it looks more like a day for the kite surfers than the paddle crew.
Then it all fades again. The morning of Monday, August 31st gives us a small window with a cleaner 2.9ft wave from the W (8-second period) and a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is weak at 105, and it's "surfable but very ordinary." That's about the best we get, and that's not saying much.
The rest of the run into the first week of September is all tiny surf, onshore winds, and generally poor conditions. There is nothing here that stands out as a good bet. It’s a poor run, but the forecasts can always change, so keep an eye on it.
