The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve scanned the whole 16‑day window for Crab Island and I’ve got to be straight with you – there’s nothing worth paddling out for. Zero, zilch. Every single session from Tuesday 14 July right through to Wednesday 29 July is marked as poor surf conditions. That’s a full 16‑day drought.
Crab Island (a reef break that’s usually fairly consistent) is sitting dead flat most of the time. We’re talking swell heights around 0.3ft to 0.7ft for the first week and a bit, with combined energy barely reaching double digits – often just 2 to 27. Winds are all over the place, mostly cross or cross‑off, with a few glassy moments but no push to make anything rideable. Even when the energy finally climbs on Sunday 26 July afternoon to 121, the swell is only 4ft with a short 6‑second period and a fresh cross‑shore that’ll chop it to bits. Monday 27 July morning bumps up to 5ft and 515 energy, but that’s a cross‑onshore mess with lumps. After that it stays poor – Tuesday 28 July and Wednesday 29 July have moderate to fresh cross‑onshore winds and lumpy, choppy conditions.
Bottom line: there are no good surf options in this whole 16‑day stretch. For an area where the break is fairly consistent, this run is a rare blank. Sometimes it just goes quiet. Forecasts can change, but right now you’d be wasting your time.
Rusty.
