Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Crab Island. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak stretch ahead. There’s barely a whisper of surf for the first couple of weeks, so we’re looking at a long gap with nothing worth paddling out for.
We start off on Monday, 6 July, and honestly, it’s a write-off. Tiny 1 ft to 2 ft swell from the west, short periods, and cross-onshore winds making a mess of things. That poor surf continues day after day through the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th – mostly small, weak, and choppy. No score worth mentioning. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing special.
Then there’s a stretch from the 13th to the 16th where we get some glassy or clean conditions, but the swell is essentially flat – less than 1 ft. That’s just not surfable. You’d be better off on a stand-up paddleboard.
Finally, around the 17th we see a bit more life: 2 ft to 3 ft from the west-southwest on Friday, and it picks up into Saturday, 18 July – 4 ft from the west, period around 6 seconds, and clean cross-offshore winds. The combined energy jumps to 116 (moderate) by Saturday morning. Still, the wave quality is marked poor and scores are zero, so it’s not something to get excited about. The swell direction (W) matches the optimum direction (SW) fairly closely, but the period is short and the size is small.
The one that might raise an eyebrow is Tuesday, 21 July – that’s over two weeks away, so take it with a pinch of salt. Early morning we get 5 ft from the west-southwest, period 7 seconds, with offshore wind and a combined energy of 375 (strong). The guidance rates this as “expect good surf conditions” with a score of 2 out of 10 – so not a standout, but the best of a bad bunch. The swell direction is a good match, and the wind is offshore, so it could be clean. But remember, that’s way out in the forecast, so don’t bank on it just yet.
Everything else is tiny or messy. For the whole 16-day window, there’s no true standout – the 21st is the closest thing to hope. If you’re itching for waves, better look elsewhere or wait for a change in the charts.
Stay tuned, and as always – keep an eye on the horizon.
