The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next two weeks are a tough watch for any surfer around Crab Island. For the most part, we’re looking at poor surf conditions with only a couple of brief windows where it might be worth paddling out. We kick off on Wednesday, 19th August and head into the first few days with nothing really going on— small, messy, and wind-hit.
The first real glimmer shows up on Thursday morning, 20th August. Swell pushes to about 5ft from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds meaning it’s a bit weak and jumbled. The moderate cross-off breeze cleans things up though (moderate combined swell energy of 228). Still, the score is marginal at best—tide and quality likely kill it.
Come Friday morning, 21st August, we get a short burst of surf. The swell drops to 2ft from the west, period 8 seconds—so it’s small and a bit weak (energy 67). But a gentle offshore from the NNW has it clean. This is surfable but very ordinary. I wouldn’t get too excited.
From Friday afternoon through the next week and a half, things go pretty flat or blown out. We’re talking mostly under 2ft, with onshore or cross-shore winds and energy readings barely cracking 100. It’s a long, barren run. By the way, the water temperature on day one is sitting at 70°, which is a massive 9° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual.
The one exception? Friday morning, 28th August. That morning sees 3ft from the WSW at 6 seconds (energy 96) with a cross-off breeze from the NNW making it clean. Again, it’s surfable but ordinary. Not a standout, just a rare chance to get wet.
The only break on the cards is Crab Island—a reef setup that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the SW. It’s an intermediate spot, and crowds can be around sometimes, so don’t expect solitude. The optimum swell direction here is SW, so when that lines up it helps. Honestly though, nothing in this entire 16-day window is worth calling a standout. The best you get is Thursday 20th morning for size and Friday 28th morning for a clean window. Beyond that, you’re waiting.
Hang in there, it tends not to stay this flat for long around here, forecasts can change. I’m Rusty.
