The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s on offer here for the local stretch.
I’m talking about Langland Point. It’s a right-hand point break, good for intermediates, and fairly consistent with the best swell coming from the southwest. The water right now is sitting at 70°, which is a good 9° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual.
Now, the bad news first. The forecast starts off flat as a pancake. From Thursday 20th August, the swell is tiny, maybe a foot or less, and the energy is barely there. There’s a long stretch of almost nothing. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Saturday 29th August. That’s a gap of close to 8 days with no worthwhile surf.
On Saturday 29th August, we finally see something. The morning brings a 7ft swell from the west-southwest with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 494, which is moderate but noticeable. Wind is cross-off from the west-northwest at about 15 mph, so the surface should be fairly clean. That afternoon, the swell is still 7ft, energy at 437, but the wind picks up to 19 mph from the west. It’s still cross-off, just a little more breeze.
This is the best window of the whole 16 days. The size is solid for an intermediate surfer, a little too much for a beginner. The swell direction is right on for the break, and the wind is workable. It’s not pristine, but after a week of nothing, it’s the one to aim for.
After that, things drop back down. Sunday 30th and Monday 31st August are small and messy, with cross-onshore winds from the southeast and onshore from the south. Not good. Then Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September are small again, only around 1ft, but clean with cross-off winds. Clean, but no power.
The tail end of the forecast shows another pulse around Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th September. Thursday 3rd has a 7ft swell from the west-southwest, but with a near gale cross-onshore wind from the southwest at 31 mph. It’s blown out, energy is high at 462, but not surfable. Then Friday 4th September cleans up nicely. We get a 3ft west-southwest swell on an 8 second period, wind from the north-northwest at 6 mph, which is offshore. Energy is 148, and conditions are clean. That’s a decent, smaller option, but it’s 15 days out, so don’t plan the trip around it yet.
All in all, it’s a quiet period for this area. Saturday 29th August is your best bet. After that, keep an eye on that Friday 4th September window, but it’s a long way off.
