The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about the next couple of weeks at Langland Point.

Honestly, it’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a long run of small, weak surf, and it’s going to test your patience. The water is a real standout though – it’s coming in at a balmy 70°, which is a solid several degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a gift, so don’t waste it.

The next week to ten days is looking pretty bleak. The swell energy is mostly weak, dipping into the low double digits at times, and the waves are just too small to get excited about. We’ll see some chest-high stuff around the 18th to the 20th, around 4ft to 4ft, but the winds are mostly cross or cross-offshore, so it will be a bit of a fight for a clean one. It’s not going to be worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate. The morning of the 22nd is glassy with a little pulse from a 10-second swell, but the swell height is only 1ft – it’s a real knee-slapper.

There is a period of bigger swell that starts to show around the 26th and builds through the 28th, but it’s shrouded in onshore winds and rain, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. That’s not what we want. The energy starts to ramp up, heading into the moderate range (132 to 553), but the quality just isn’t there.

The one moment that could have some merit is the morning of Saturday, the 29th. We’re looking at the swell jumping up to a solid 7ft from the WSW. The energy will be pumping at a strong 1062, and the wind is a cross-offshore from the WNW. This will create some heavier, more powerful waves, which should clean up nicely. This is expert territory though, as it’s well over the 5ft mark for beginners. It might be a bit tricky, but it’s the best chance for a proper wave in the whole window.

After that, it looks like it gets messy again. The 31st shows some size, 8ft, but the wind is mostly onshore or cross, making it lumpy. And the first of September follows suit with another 8ft of cross/onshore mess. It’s a lot of water moving, but the conditions will be poor.

So, to be straight with you: the best thing on offer here is that Saturday morning session on the 29th at Langland Point. It’s got the size, the period is okay, and the wind will be offshore. It won’t be a classic point-break day; it’ll be powerful and maybe a little wild. If you’re an expert looking for a punch, that’s your window. For everyone else, keep your board in the car and enjoy the warm water while you can – there’s not much else to get excited about. The long-range stuff is promising, but a week and a half out, it’s a gamble.

Stay salty,
Rusty
