The Lowdown
Grim one, folks. I’ve stared at the charts for Langland Point for the next couple of weeks and, to be honest, it’s a tough watch. There’s a real gap at the start here—nothing but small, weak leftovers and grovelly little waves for days. The water’s a balmy 70° and the anomaly reading says it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a rare treat if you’re just having a swim, but for actual surfing? It’s barren.
From Tuesday the 18th through to the end of the month, we’re looking at waist-high dribble at best. A few pulses of 4ft on Thursday the 20th morning with a northwesterly cross-off breeze keep things clean, but the swell period is only around 7 seconds—that’s junky, short-period stuff with a combined energy of 163, which is weak to moderate. It’s surfable, sure, but you’ll be scratching for anything with push. There’s a day on Saturday the 22nd where it goes glassy as a millpond in the morning, but we’re talking 1ft of swell. Don’t even bother taking the board off the racks.
The only real blip of size is on Tuesday the 25th. That morning sees 7ft of westerly swell, period pushing 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps right up to 1188—strong to very strong energy. But here’s the kicker: onshore easterly winds at 22 mph are going to make it a lumpy, cross-onshore mess. This isn’t a clean day; this is a close-out chaos day. That size is on the bigger side—too big for beginners, and even for the lads, it’ll be a battle. It’s the kind of day where you’re better off watching from the cliffs than paddling out into that. For a beach and reef setup, this is classic windblown slop. Honestly, if you’re into kitesurfing, that might be the one bright spot.
After that, it fades again through the end of August into the first couple of days of September. Some cleaner cross-off winds return on the 27th and 28th, but the swell has died right back down again—under 3ft. A slight pickup around Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon gives us 5ft, but it’s cross-shore and short-period, so still average at best.
Look, the “poor surf conditions” label is on every single record here, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. The forecast shows no standout day in this entire 16-day window. We’ve got a few mornings with clean conditions, like the glassy spell on the 23rd, but the swell is just nowhere to be found. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a rough patch. It never seems to stay this flat forever, and the long-range looks like it could shuffle, but right now, you’re not missing anything. Keep the boards waxed, but maybe sort out your rock collection for a fortnight.
Rusty.
