The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: it’s gonna be a quiet couple of weeks at Langland Point. The surf is going to be small and pretty weak for the most part, and we’ve got a whole lot of waiting around to do before anything with real punch shows up. Don't get too excited just yet.

Right now, we’ve got a few small waves rolling in, but nothing that’s going to get your heart pounding. A little cross-offshore breeze will keep things tidy, but the swell is tiny and the energy is weak. Monday and Tuesday, we’re looking at ankle-biters, maybe knee-high on the better sets. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there. It’s going to be a slow start.

The middle of the week, say Wednesday and Thursday, we see a slight bump in size, pushing to around chest-high maybe. The wind stays cross-off, which is good for keeping it clean, but the wave energy is still pretty modest at best. There's a little more push there, but it’s still not lighting anyone’s world on fire. It’s surfable, sure, but you’ll be fighting for scraps.

Then we hit a real flat spell. From Friday the 22nd through the following week, the swell just dies out completely. We're talking tiny, ankle-high slop with a few long-period pulses that won't make the point do much of anything. You might see a glassy morning on the 24th, but for a spot like this, it’s going to be a lake. There are going to be several days in a row where paddling out is basically a waste of time. It’s a proper lull.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. We’re looking at a significant change late in the window. The 26th, 27th, and 28th of August show a real pulse of energy arriving. This is the standout period of the whole forecast. On the 27th, we see a solid groundswell filling in, with sets pushing well overhead. The period is nice and long, and the energy readings are strong to very strong. This is a proper swell, and a wave of this size and power is strictly for the experienced crew. Beginners absolutely need to sit this one out.

The wind looks like it’ll be cross-offshore and moderate, so we can expect some decent shape on the point. However, with that size and power, it could get a bit unruly. This is a long-range call, so don't book the time off just yet, but this is the one to keep an eye on. After that, things ease off again, returning to more average, smaller surf as we head into September.

So, the long and short of it: don't get your hopes up this week, enjoy the smallness if you're just wanting a splash, but the real show is the big swell at the end of the month. That's the one for the serious surfers.

Light rain (total 2mm), mostly falling on Wed afternoon. Very mild (max 19°C on Mon morning, min 14°C on Tue night). Winds increasing (light winds from the NW on Sun night, fresh winds from the WSW by Wed afternoon).
