The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks at Langland Point are looking pretty grim for surfers. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy conditions, with only a few fleeting moments of interest. The water is sitting at 70°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
The first real chance of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until the morning of Wednesday, August 26th. Even then, it’s marginal. Swell comes in at 3 ft from the WSW with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is only 101 – weak stuff. The wind is light from the SW, cross-on, so it’s not clean. It’s more of a “maybe get a few closeouts” kind of session.
The next day, Thursday August 27th, is a total write-off. The wind picks up and the swell drops away. Nothing doing.
Friday August 28th is similar – small, onshore, choppy. Not worth your time.
Actually, the standout of the whole forecast – if you can call it that – is the morning of Saturday August 29th. Swell bumps up to 4 ft from the WSW, period 7 seconds, with combined energy hitting 131. That’s still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. The wind is SSW at 16 mph, cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy and choppy. Not classic Langland Point by any stretch, but if you’re desperate, there might be a few runners.
Sunday August 30th is a dud – small, messy, and windy.
Monday August 31st morning looks interesting but tricky. Swell is 5 ft from the WSW, period 9 seconds, and combined energy is 315 – moderate. The wind is NW at 16 mph, offshore, so the waves should be clean. That’s a decent setup for more experienced surfers, but it’s still a marginal call. The afternoon picks up to 6 ft from the W, period 10 seconds, and energy jumps to 627 – moderate-strong. But the wind is W at 19 mph, cross-off, so it’s going to be blown out and messy. Not a winner.
After that, the first week of September stays quiet. The morning of Wednesday September 2nd has 5 ft from the W, period 8 seconds, and energy of 255, with glassy conditions from a light S wind. That’s probably the most promising day in the whole outlook – clean, surfable waves, but nothing special. It’s the kind of session where you’ll get a few turns but won’t be telling stories about it.
The rest of the period is small, windy, or both. No real standouts, no big swells, no great wind. If you’re a beginner, the bigger days (over 5 ft) might be a bit much, but the conditions are so poor it doesn’t really matter. For experts, the 5 ft to 6 ft days with offshore wind could be worth a look, but the quality is low.
All in all, Langland Point is in a bit of a lull. The best bet is the morning of Monday August 31st or the morning of Wednesday September 2nd. Keep an eye on the forecast, but don’t get your hopes up.
