The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Langland Point. It’s a pretty quiet outlook for the next couple of weeks, to be honest. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands, especially for the first week. There’s no surf worth talking about from now through the end of the month. The waves are tiny, the wind is messy, and the energy just isn’t there. It’s a proper gap of about five days with nothing on offer.
The first day that even looks like it could be worth a paddle is Friday the 28th of August. Friday morning, the wind swings light offshore from the NE at just 3 mph, and the swell is a weak 3 ft from the WSW. The energy is still low – only 137 (moderate wave energy) – but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. Waves are surfable, but it’s very ordinary. It’s a tease, not a stand-out.
Saturday the 29th of August sees a bit more size – 6 ft to 7 ft from the WSW – but the wind is firing onshore at 19-25 mph. That’s messy, choppy, and only for the most committed. The energy is pumping up to 383-444 (strong wave energy), which is a lot of power, but it’s going to be blown out. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Sunday the 30th of August drops back to 4 ft to 4 ft, still cross-offshore wind, but the quality is still poor. The week of the 31st of August sees a few glassy mornings with tiny 2 ft to 3 ft swell, but the energy is weak (70-71). You might get a clean ankle-snapper, but don’t expect much.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is Thursday the 3rd of September. By the afternoon, we’ve got a 6 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds, and the wind goes light cross-shore from the SW at 3 mph. The combined energy is up to 316 (moderate wave energy). It’s listed as marginal, but that’s the best we’ll see. The swell direction (WSW) matches the optimum for Langland Point (SW), which is a good sign. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. It’s still a bit lumpy with light cross-shore ripples, so don’t expect perfection, but it’s the only window in the whole 16 days where you might get a few decent ones. It’s not a true classic, but it’s the best on offer.
The week after that fades back into wind and chop. Crowds are possible at Langland Point, so if you do go, you might have company. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but these forecasts can change. For now, keep your eye on that Thursday the 3rd of September. That’s your best bet.
Rusty.
