The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and quiet around Langland Point. It’s a bit of a bummer, but we’ll walk through it day by day and see if there’s anything worth paddling out for.
From now through the 23rd of July, we’re in a real dry spell. Swell is tiny—mostly 0.3ft to 0.7ft—and the wave energy is weak, bouncing between 3 and 37 (weak energy). The water temperature is a balmy 69°, which is a whopping 9° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s much warmer than normal. That’s nice for a dip, but not for surfing. Winds are often light or glassy, especially on the 14th afternoon with a glassy calm, and on the 18th and 19th mornings with glassy conditions too. But with no swell to work with, it’s just a flat, clean lake. Not a single session gets a recommendation—it’s all poor surf.
We finally see a bit of life on the 24th of July. The morning brings a 3ft swell from the SW, period a short 5 seconds, with the combined energy at 52 (weak). Wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’s a bit bumpy. The afternoon builds slightly to 4ft from the SW, same short period, energy up to 82 (still weak), but the wind picks up to a moderate cross-shore, creating a cross-chop. It’s still not great, and the score is poor. This is the only little blip in the whole run.
The 25th and 26th see a bit more swell—peaking around 3ft to 4ft from the WSW—but the period stays short at 5 to 7 seconds, and the energy is moderate at best (79 at the highest). The wind is a problem: fresh cross-shore with lumpy chop on the 25th, and on the 26th we get strong cross-onshore winds up to 28 mph with rain. It’s messy and not worth the effort.
The 27th and 28th of July are a drop-off again, with swell shrinking back to 1ft to 2ft, and strong winds from the SSW/SW making it a choppy, lumpy mess.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout session here. The best of a bad bunch is the 24th of July afternoon, with 4ft from the SW and a moderate cross-shore wind, but it’s short-period and choppy. For a point break like Langland Point, which is fairly exposed to SW swell, we’d normally expect better shape, but this swell is just too weak and short. It’s not worth paddling out for anything more than a splash. The long gap of flatness from now until the 24th is a solid 11 days of nothing. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Stay tuned, and I’ll be back when there’s something real to chase.
