The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer around here.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, small waves and poor conditions. From now right through until the 25th of July, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly under 0.7 ft, and the wind is all over the shop. It’s a real lull, and it’s going to test your patience.
The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Saturday the 26th of July. The swell jumps up to 5 ft out of the WSW, but the wind is a messy cross-shore at 16 mph. The wave energy is moderate at 203, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and unorganised. That afternoon the wind picks up even more, making it choppy. It’s not a standout, but it’s the first bump in ages.
Then on Monday the 27th, the swell drops to 4 ft from the west, with a cross-offshore wind at 16 mph. The energy is weak at 92 and the period is only 6 seconds. It’s clean, but pretty ordinary.
The best chance in this whole window looks like Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning brings a 4 ft west swell with a gentle 9 mph cross-offshore breeze. The energy is weak at 99 and the period is short at 6 seconds, but it’s clean and the wind is light. It’s a surfable wave, nothing to write home about, but after all this flatness, it’s the best we’ve got. Langland Point is a tidy little point break, and with the wind cleaning it up, it’ll be the pick of a bad bunch. The water temperature is much warmer than normal for this time of year at 69°, so that’s a bonus. You might have some company as crowds are sometimes around.
Later in the week, on the morning of Thursday the 30th, the swell builds to 5 ft from the west, but the wind is a cross-onshore at 12 mph, and the energy is strong at 452. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a choppy, messy mess. That’s more one for the experts if anything, but honestly, it’s not looking great.
The final days taper off again into small weak surf. The morning of the 31st of July has a 4 ft west swell with a cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is moderate at 120 and the period is short. It’s clean, but nothing special.
So, if you’re desperate, aim for the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July at Langland Point. It’s the only real window of clean, surfable waves in this whole outlook.
