The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Langland Point.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough start. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing for the first week and a half. From Friday the 21st of August right through to Saturday the 29th, it’s a bleak run. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and when there is a little bump, the wind is messing it up. It’s a real shame because the water is a standout – it’s sitting at 70° on that Friday morning, a massive 9° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, almost tropical, but no surf to enjoy it in.
The first real flicker of something happens on Sunday the 30th of August. The swell starts to bump up to 5ft from the WSW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 415 (moderate wave energy). But the wind is a cross-on or cross shore, making it lumpy. The best call that morning is a "marginal" call, so it’s not great, but it’s the first sign of life.
Monday the 31st of August sees a bigger pulse – 6ft from the W, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 725 (strong wave energy). That’s a solid amount of water moving. But again, the wind is cross-shore, leaving it messy. This swell is more than 5ft, so it’s getting a bit too much for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s a step in the right direction. The direction is from the W, which is not the ideal SW for this point, but it’s still wrapping in.
The best window, and the only real standout in this whole 16-day forecast, is on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning looks iffy with a storm risk and cross-on wind, but the afternoon is the one. The swell drops to a punchy 4ft from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 166 (moderate wave energy). The wind swings to W at 15 mph, putting it into a clean cross-off position here at Langland Point. That’s what you want. The waves will be clean, with a bit of shape. It’s not a massive day, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The wind is the key here – it’ll make the place look real good. Crowds are possible, as it’s "sometimes" busy, but on a Tuesday afternoon with this kind of forecast, you might just get lucky.
After that, it fades out again. Wednesday the 2nd drops to 2ft, and by Thursday the 3rd we’re back to tiny 1ft waves. The last few days of the forecast are a write-off. So, if you’re hanging for a wave, make a plan for that Tuesday afternoon. It’s your best bet, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
Rusty.
