The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Langland Point over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough start. For the first ten days or so, we’re looking at a real flat spell. The swell is tiny, barely a knee-high ripple, and the wave energy is weak – we’re talking values as low as 1 to 30 for the combined energy of all swells directed here. The water is a balmy 69° which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only exciting thing. There’s nothing worth paddling out for from Tuesday 14th July right through to late on Sunday 26th July. That’s a long gap of nothing.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday 27th July. After a morning of light rain and a bit of cross-shore wind, the afternoon cleans right up. We get a glassy surface with a 4ft swell from the WSW, period around 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 412 (moderate to strong energy), and the wind is calm. It’s not perfect, but it’s the first proper surfable wave in a long time. The low point is a bit ordinary, but it’s rideable and clean.
Then Tuesday 28th July morning offers a similar story – glassy conditions, 3ft from the WSW, with energy at 119. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The following days drop off again, with small clean waves but no real punch.
The standout? If you’re desperate for a wave, the best on offer is the late afternoon of Monday 27th July. It’s the only time the swell gets over 3ft with glassy wind and decent energy. It’s not a day for the history books, but it’s the best we’ve got. For now, keep your board waxed and your eyes on the forecast.
Rusty.
