Right folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead for the Gower. Langland Point is a lovely spot, but we’re looking at a very long wait for anything that’s actually worth paddling out for.
Right now, and for the next several days, the swell is tiny and weak. We’re talking scraps of 1 to 3 feet with a combined energy that barely registers (75 at best). The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, so the water’s not blown out, but there’s just no power behind it. The swell period is short, mostly under 10 seconds, so it’s weak, wind-swell lines. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
This flat spell runs deep. We’ve got a few sessions with light, glassy, or offshore winds – like Wednesday the 8th, Thursday the 9th, and Friday the 10th with speeds as low as 3 mph – but the swell is still pathetic (1 to 2 feet). It’s clean, but you’d be fighting for a knee-high dribble. There’s a slight bump on the 11th with a 1 foot swell and an offshore wind, but it’s still barely a ripple.
The second week doesn’t offer any relief. From the 12th of July right through to the 20th, we’ve got a near-continuous run of tiny surf (0.3 to 2 feet) and mostly onshore or cross-shore winds. The energy is flat-lining, with values as low as 4 or 5. There’s a brief moment of offshore wind on the 16th, but the swell is only 1 foot. It’s not going to happen.
The standout? There isn’t one. The best of a bad bunch is the Friday the 10th or Sunday the 12th early if you’re desperate for a longboard or a foiler, but for a proper surf, this is a write-off. The entire 16-day window is a gap with no real recommendations. It’s a quiet period; the forecasts can change, but for now, you’re not missing a thing.
Rusty.
