Alright, let’s talk surf for this stretch. It’s been a real bummer of a forecast, to be honest. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out period of basically nothing. For a good ten days or more, the swell is tiny, the energy is weak as dishwater – we’re talking combined energy readings in the low teens or even single digits, like 42, 17, 14. You could sleep on a board and not miss a thing. It’s one of those quiet spells where you just have to be patient.
Our usual spot, Langland Point, is a pretty reliable point break, but even it’s suffering. The water temp is a crazy 20°, which is almost 5° warmer than normal – a massive anomaly for this time of year. Feels like a warm bath out there, but that’s the only interesting thing happening for a while.
There is zero reason to get wet until Wednesday, July 22nd. That morning, we finally see a pulse of 1.2m swell coming from the WSW, but the period is a short 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 143 – that’s moderate energy, finally something to work with. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so a bit lumpy. But the afternoon is the real story. The wind goes completely glassy. We still have that same 1.2m, 7-second WSW swell, with energy at 135. It won’t be perfect – short-period groundswell on a point can be a little soft and wonky – but the surface will be mirror-flat. That afternoon window on the 22nd is your only real shot. It’s not a classic, but after all this flatness, it’s the standout. The rest of the forecast after that fades right back into small, choppy nothing.
In short: a long dry spell, then a brief, clean window on July 22nd afternoon. Keep the expectations low.
