The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for Langland Bay. The whole 16-day window is looking bleak, with no decent surf to get excited about. The forecast is a long, dry spell of tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. We’re talking a solid 16 days of flat or near-flat, choppy, or wind-battered surf. The swell energy is almost non-existent for the first week, and when it does try to pick up, the wind just ruins it. The only notable event is a bump in energy on the 28th and 29th, but it’s a messy, short-period windswell – not the kind of thing that makes a point break like this one sing.
Let’s look at the details. From now through the 24th, it’s barely a ripple, with swell heights around 0.3ft to 1.0ft and combined energy readings in the teens and twenties (26, 22, 14). That’s not surf, that’s a lake. The water is a very unusual 70°F, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, but that’s the only headline.
The 25th offers a tiny 2ft swell from the east, with clean conditions under a cross-offshore breeze, but the period is a shocking 3 seconds. That’s pure wind chop, and the energy is only 19. It’s not worth a paddle.
Later in the week, on the 27th afternoon, we see a bump to 3ft from the SW (period 8s) with energy hitting 132 – that’s moderate energy. But it’s onshore, rainy, and the report says poor surf. The 28th morning has 5ft SW swell (period 9s, energy 307), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. The 29th morning gets a bit bigger at 6ft (period 7s, energy 277) with clean, cross-offshore wind, but that’s still a short-period, wind-driven swell. By the 29th afternoon, it’s 7ft, but the wind is cross-shore and lumpy. Anything over 8ft is experts-only, but the quality just isn’t there.
The 31st and 1st of September see a drop back to 5ft and 3ft, with clean conditions, but the period is still short (7s). The 4th of September afternoon offers a 3ft W swell with a 8 second period and clean cross-offshore wind, and energy hits 128. It’s the cleanest looking window in the whole forecast, but with a tiny swell and a short period, it’s a last resort, not a standout.
The bottom line is there are no good surf options in the 16-day window. The period is dominated by either no swell or short-period, wind-affected waves. For a break like Langland Bay, which is fairly exposed to SW swell, the wind is just never aligned for a good session. With this much wind and poor quality, the setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. When it’s this flat and messy, it tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
