The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Langland Bay.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple. From Thursday the 20th of August all the way through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny and the conditions are just plain ugly. For the first ten days, the combined energy is mostly weak, with values sitting between 11 and 92, and it’s not doing us any favours. The wind is a mess most of the time – cross-off, cross-on, onshore – and the swell heights are either flat or below 3 ft. It’s a frustrating stretch of weather, but it’s not unusual for this area to have a blank run like this.
The first real tease of something decent comes on Saturday the 29th of August. We’ve got a modest 5 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the NW at 16 mph. The combined energy is up to 253 (moderate), and the water is around average for the time of year. It’s not a world-beater, but it’s a clean, surfable wave. For a spot that’s fairly exposed to the swell, it’s a chance to get wet.
Then, things get a bit more interesting, but it’s a double-edged sword. By Sunday the 30th of August, the swell pushes up to 6 ft, and the combined energy jumps to 302. But the wind swings onshore from the south, and the quality drops. On Monday the 31st of August, the swell hits 8 ft from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy absolutely explodes to 2273. That’s strong wave energy. But here’s the catch – the wind is howling cross-onshore from the SW at 16-19 mph. With that much power and that much wind, the wave faces will be lumpy and choppy. For an intermediate spot, 8 ft is getting into expert-only territory, especially with the mess. If you’re a kite surfer, this is your window. For a regular surfer, it’s gonna be a messy, bumpy battle.
The best bet in this whole 16-day window looks like Saturday the 29th of August. The swell is 5 ft from the WSW, the wind is a clean cross-off at 16 mph, and the combined energy is a solid 253. It’s not huge, but it’s clean. The only other day that’s worth a mention is Tuesday the 1st of September. The swell drops to 4 ft from the W, and the wind is a light, cross-off NW breeze at 6 mph. The combined energy is 164 (moderate), and the conditions are clean. It’s a small, fun day for a longboard or a fish, but don’t expect to get your heart pumping.
Overall, the pick of the period is Saturday the 29th of August. It’s the most balanced day we’ve got, with a clean, cross-off wind and a reasonable 5 ft swell. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The rest of the time, you’re better off finding a good book or a nice spot to watch the clouds roll in.
Rusty.
