The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m lookin at the next couple weeks here at Langland Bay, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch. For the first ten days or so, the swell is barely a ripple and the energy’s flat. We’ve got a long dry spell ahead before any proper waves show up.
Let’s run through it. From Tuesday 14 July right through to Saturday 25 July, it’s a real struggle. Swell heights are mostly sitting at 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with the combined energy of all swells directed here hovering between 1 and 31 (very weak). There’s no punch, no push, just an occasional glassy morning, like Tuesday afternoon 14 July and Friday morning 17 July where the wind goes glass or clean offshore, but with nothing to ride it’s just a pretty lake.
Thursday morning 16 July sees a tiny little 0.7ft from the west with a period of 8 seconds, but the energy’s still only 9 (very weak). Not worth paddling out for. There’s some clean conditions on the 18th and 19th, but again, just not enough swell to get excited about.
Now, after that long, quiet gap, we start to see a bit of life around Sunday 26 July. Sunday afternoon the swell picks up to 3.9ft from the WSW, but it’s short period at 6 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 35 km/h. The energy jumps to 121 (moderate), but the conditions are lumpy and cross-choppy. It’s not a clean ride for anyone.
The real standout, if you can call it that, comes on Monday 27 July. The swell jumps to 5.2ft from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds and combined energy of 515 (strong). That’s a fair bit of power. But here’s the catch: it’s cross-onshore wind, 20 km/h in the morning and 15 km/h in the afternoon, with chop and bump on the surface. The break itself, Langland Bay, is fairly exposed and prefers the wind offshore from the north. This southwest swell with cross-onshore wind will make for messy, lumpy waves. At 5.2ft, that’s getting too big for beginners, and with the chop, it’s really only going to be fun for experienced surfers who don’t mind a fight. The energy is there, but the quality is poor.
The following days, Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 July, hang onto similar size (3.9ft to 6.2ft from the WSW) but the wind stays cross-onshore and the conditions stay lumpy. Wednesday morning 29 July has the biggest swell of the period at 6.2ft, with strong energy (389), but again, it’s moderately cross-onshore and choppy. Over 5ft, that’s not for beginners, and with the chop, even the crew will have a rough time getting a clean face.
Bottom line: there’s no real standout quality surf in this 16-day window. The only time there’s any real swell is from the 26th to the 29th, but the wind ruins it. If you’re a kiter, maybe those lumpy afternoon sessions on the 26th, 27th, and 28th might look interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a write-off. The water temperature? No anomaly noted, so it’s about average for the time of year.
Stay patient, lads. It’ll come around.
