Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Langland Bay has got cooking for us.
It’s a grim picture, to be honest. We’ve got a full sixteen days here, and there’s barely a ripple. The swell energy is weak all the way through, with combined readings struggling to break free from the low double digits. We're looking at a stubborn run of tiny, weak surf that just never gets going. The first event that even tickles the 100 mark isn't until the 10th of July, and even then, it's a paltry 41 combined energy. You’d be waiting a long time for any kind of wave worth paddling for.
Right at the start, Tuesday the 7th of July, we're in for a real letdown. The swell is a pathetic 1.0ft from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds, and the waves are described as poor. Combined energy is just 22. It’s not worth getting the board off the roof. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s messy on top of being flat.
Wednesday the 8th is more of the same. We get a tiny increase to 1ft, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the wind is cross-onshore in the morning and cross-shore in the afternoon. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Now, if you were looking for the best of a bad bunch – and I use that term loosely – you’d look at Thursday the 9th of July, morning. That’s the one moment where we get a glassy surface with a 1.0ft groundswell from the west, period of 10 seconds. The energy is only 17, so it’s feeble, but for a complete beginner messing around in the whitewater, it might just about be sessionable. The glassy conditions are a major positive, meaning it will be clean, though tiny.
Honestly, the rest of the run is a dead loss. We go through days and days of onshore winds, short-period junk, and combined energy values that barely register. The period on the 12th of July hits a whopping 16 seconds, but with a 0.3ft swell, that’s just a long, flat lull. From the 13th of July onward, it's all easterly winds and tiny, poor quality surf with cross-chop.
The only other moment that looks interesting is the morning of Saturday the 18th of July. It’s glassy again, with 1ft from the WSW, but those 7-second waves are just windswell. And again, the combined energy is a low 19. It's a nice-looking surface on a very small wave. Might be alright for a bodyboard. But for a real surf? There's nothing here.
It’s a blank run, plain and simple. For an area that is fairly consistent, this feels almost like a system failure. Just one of those periods where you’re better off finding something else to do. The forecasts can always change, but as it stands, the gear stays in the shed.
Rusty.
