The Lowdown
Right, pull up a sand-dusted log and let’s have a proper look at Langland Bay over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you, mate – this isn’t a classic run for the Gower. The whole sixteen-day window is a proper struggle, with barely a session worth paddling out for. There are long gaps with absolutely nothing on offer, so don’t bother checking the forecasts every day.
We kick off on Friday the 21st with tiny, weak swell – 1ft to 2ft from the WSW. The wind’s okay, a moderate offshore from the NNW in the morning, but the energy is pathetic at only 75 (that’s a weak, gutless number). It’s poor surf, plain and simple. That sets the tone for days. Saturday the 22nd morning goes glassy, but with only 1ft of swell and an energy reading of 32, it’s flat. You’d be polishing your board, not riding it.
The whole of the following week is a write-off. We get a bit of a pulse from the 30th of August into the 1st of September, where swell nudges up to 4ft – 5ft from the W/WSW with moderate energy (hitting 725 on Monday the 31st morning). But here’s the kicker: every single one of those sessions is cross-on shore or choppy, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” The wind is just ruining any chance of a decent face. It’s bigger, sure, but it’s messy, lumpy, and not worth the paddle out. For the experienced lads, those 5ft sets on the 31st morning might look tempting, but the wind is straight on from the SW, and it’s all chop. Honestly, that setup is looking more like a kite-surfing cross-shore blast than a clean paddle session.
The water temp is properly weird here. On the 21st, it’s sitting at 70°F – that’s a massive 9°F warmer than normal for this time of year. Very unusual, feels like a bath, but there’s no swell to enjoy it in.
After the 1st of September, it drops right off again. The 2nd and 3rd have a little clean moment with a moderate offshore from the WNW on the 2nd morning, but the swell is down to 2ft and energy is 51. Not enough to ride. The rest dribbles away to nothing.
So, the honest truth from an old salt like me: there is no standout session here. Not one. The best on offer is probably the Sunday morning of the 30th of August, with 4ft from the WSW and light cross-on winds – it’s “marginal” at best, and it’s the only day that even scores a 1 out of 10. That’s how grim it is. If you’re desperate, you might find a bump, but don’t expect a wave. Blank runs like this are part of the deal here sometimes – the sea gives nothing, and you wait.
Stay patient, lads.
Rusty.
