The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s happening right here.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch coming up. For the next couple of weeks, Langland Bay is looking pretty flat and sad, with only tiny dribbles of swell – we’re talking about 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft for the vast majority of days. The combined wave energy is almost non-existent, sitting anywhere from a measly 1 to a weak 25 (25) for the bulk of the period, so you wouldn’t even need to paddle. There’s a long gap of nothing worth getting wet for from now until the end of July.
The water temperature is about 69°, which is way warmer than usual for this time of year – a full 9° above normal, so it feels like a warm bath out there, but with no waves to enjoy it.
The pattern does start to shift at the very tail end. On Wednesday morning, July 30th, we finally see a pulse of life. The wave heights bump up to 3 ft from the WSW, and by Thursday morning, July 30th, we get a peak of 4 ft from the W. The energy also climbs into three-digit territory, hitting 116 (116) on Thursday morning, which is moderate and much more promising. The period on that Thursday is a short 6 seconds though, so it’ll be a bit crumby and soft – more of a mushy windswell than a proper groundswell.
Even then, the forecast still calls it “poor surf conditions,” and the winds are cross or cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be clean. The best bet in that little run might be Wednesday afternoon, July 29th, with lighter onshore breezes, but that’s not saying much.
For a break that’s fairly exposed to the SW, we just aren’t seeing the right combination of size and clean wind. This is one of those spells where you park the board and save the wax.
