Alright folks, Rusty here with the local surf picture.
To be straight with you, there’s not a whole lot to shout about for the next week and a half. We’ve got a long flat spell on the cards, with hardly any energy coming through until the middle of the month. Most mornings will be clean and glassy, but there’s just no swell to work with – a few 0.3 – 0.5 ft dribbles that aren’t worth your time. The swell energy is in the doldrums, reading as low as 12–40 (units). The water temp is a real standout, though – it's sitting at about 67°F, which is roughly 8°F above normal. That's pretty unusual, and it feels more like a warm bath than a Welsh surf session.
Langland Bay is our only play here. It’s a fairly exposed spot that needs a proper SW groundswell to get going, and we’re just not seeing that.
The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Friday, July 17th. The swell finally picks up to around 4–5 ft from the WSW with an 8-second period, and the energy jumps to 275 – a moderate push at last. The big winner that morning is a dead-glass wind. That’s a major positive for clean, smooth surf. It’s not big, but if there's a time to paddle out, that's the window. Later that day, the wind goes cross-shore and it gets messy again, so aim for that early session.
Looking into the last part of the outlook, around July 20th and 21st, the swell forecast is much bigger – 7 ft or so from the WSW. Here’s the problem: that size with onshore or cross-shore winds makes it a lumpy, bumpy mess. The combined swell energy is high, over 560–599, but it’ll be choppy and hard to ride. That size, over 5 ft, is definitely for experts only. For the more experienced crowd, there's a standout on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 21st: that same solid 6–7 ft swell from the WSW, this time with glassy, offshore wind. That’s the best bet across the whole 16 days – a solid swell with perfect conditions. It’s a long-range call, so treat it as a promising possibility, but mark your calendar.
Otherwise, with the persistent small surf and the fresh cross-shore wind around the middle of the month, the setup is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days.
Stay tuned – that last week is our best hope.
Rusty.
