The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here.
Well, I’ve got to be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper surf at Aberdeen. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, weak conditions and, honestly, not a single session that gets the heart racing. The swell window is mostly closed, and what little energy shows up is pretty hopeless.
Looking at the whole picture, the first real push of surf doesn’t even appear until Saturday the 2nd of September, and even then, it’s only a marginal call. Before that, it’s all pretty much ankle-biters and tiny dribbles. From the 21st right through to the 1st, there’s just nothing doing. You’re looking at a good ten-plus days of flatness, which is a long dry spell. It’s the kind of run that makes you check the forecast every few hours hoping for a change, but the models are pretty locked in.
The only flicker of life comes on the morning of Saturday the 2nd. We finally see a bit of a pulse, with the swell bumping up to 5ft at 6 seconds, coming from the SSE. The energy is still modest, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a long time. However, the wind is light and cross-shore, so it won’t be perfect. It’s a marginal call at best – the kind of day where you might get a few crumbly shoulders if you’re in the right spot and the tide cooperates. Don’t expect much; it’s more of a paddle than a proper session.
There’s no point chasing anything else. Some of the mornings around the 26th and 28th have a bit more size, but the onshore winds and messy conditions will make it a real struggle, and the short period means the waves will be soft and walled up. It’s one of those times where the beach looks more interesting for the kitesurfers than us paddle surfers.
It’s a tough stretch, but that’s how it goes sometimes. It won’t stay this flat forever, and forecasts can change. But for now, I’d say hang up the shortboard, get the longboard out for a paddle, or just wait it out. Water temp is sitting at 58°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so the spring suit is still fine.
Hang loose.
Rusty.
