The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about your local spot, Aberdeen. I’ve had a look at the next couple of weeks and, to be honest, it’s a pretty grim run for the most part. We’re starting with a total flat spell, so don’t even bother paddling out for the first few days. There’s a real gap in the action here.
The first real hint of anything comes on Wednesday the 26th of August, but it’s still poor. The swell builds slowly, but the wind is a real problem. By Wednesday afternoon, we’re looking at a 5 ft swell from the ESE, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. The combined energy is moderate at best (160). It’s not surfable in any quality way.
Thursday the 27th sees a bit more size, with 5 ft from the east, but the wind is still onshore and the water is going to be messy. The wave energy is climbing (243–269), but the conditions are just not there. It’s a pass for me.
Friday the 28th is still cross-onshore and choppy, but the swell drops a touch to 5 ft, ENE. The wind does ease off by the afternoon, but it’s only a marginal call then.
Now, the one bright spot – and I mean the only real standout – is Saturday morning, the 29th of August. The wind goes glassy, swinging out of the NNW. That’s a game changer. The swell is 4 ft from the ENE with a period of 8 seconds, giving us a combined energy of 220 (moderate). This is your best window. The waves will be clean, the wind is light, and it’s about as good as it gets for this stretch. The water temp is about 57°F, which is pretty normal for the time of year, nothing unusual.
After that, it’s back to flat or poor conditions. There’s a tiny blip on the 4th of September, with a 8 ft swell from the SSE, but that’s a solid 8 days away. The wind is offshore (NNW), so it’s clean, but with that size (8 ft), this is expert territory. It’s also a long-period swell (7 seconds), so it’ll have some punch but might be a bit straight for a beach break like this. The combined energy is strong (510). It’s promising, but long-range calls are less certain.
For the rest of the second week, it’s a mix of flat spells and poor wind. Nothing to write home about.
So, the call is: Saturday morning the 29th is your best bet. Clean, glassy, and a decent 4 ft. That’s the one. The rest of the time, you’re better off checking the cam or doing something else.
Rusty.
