The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks around Aberdeen. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak run for paddle surfing. The water is sitting at 58°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only bit of good news.
We’ve got a long gap of nothing really worth paddling out for. From Wednesday afternoon the 15th right through to early Saturday morning the 18th, it’s a total write-off. Tiny waves, onshore slop, or just flat. The swell energy is barely registering (18 or less), and the wind is mostly cross-on or just wrong.
Then, on Saturday morning the 18th, we get a bit of a pulse. The swell bumps up to 5 ft from the NE, with a period of 10 seconds, and moderate wave energy (556). The wind is a clean cross-off from the N, which is a good sign for the beach/groyne/river setup. But the forecast calls it marginal, with questionable tide conditions, so it’s not a green light. By Saturday afternoon, it’s the same story.
The closest thing to a standout is Sunday morning the 19th. The swell is 6 ft from the NE, period 10 seconds, energy is strong (535). The wind is light and cross-off from the NNW, so it’ll be clean. That’s your best bet in the whole window. It’s still a fairly exposed beach, so it’ll be handling that size, but for a beginner-friendly spot, 6 ft is getting a bit chunky – more for the intermediate crew. The swell direction is NE, but the optimum for this break is SE, so it’s not hitting perfectly.
After that Sunday morning window, it’s back to near-flat conditions for days. The 20th and 21st are tiny, with poor wind. We get a brief moment of glassy conditions on the morning of the 22nd, but there’s no swell at all. That pattern of tiny, poor surf continues right through to the end of the month. There’s a little bump of 2 ft to 2 ft from the S around the 27th and 28th, but with energy as low as 7 to 18, and short periods (3 to 4 seconds), it’s not going to produce anything rideable.
Bottom line: If you’re desperate, Sunday morning the 19th is your only real shot. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat spell. For a beach/groyne setup like this, it’s not unusual to have a blank run. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do.
