The Lowdown
Right then, let me have a look at what we’ve got here for Aberdeen.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough run. Over the next 16 days, there’s hardly a moment worth getting excited about. The whole forecast period is looking flat and quiet, with only a few flickers of something barely surfable. You’re looking at a long gap with no real recommendations until the end of the month.
The first real pulse shows up on Thursday, 27th August. A 8ft swell from the SSE comes in with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is strong, hitting 842 in the morning and a powerful 1474 by the afternoon. That’s a lot of water moving around, but it’s big. Over 8ft, so this is strictly for the experts. The wind is a clean offshore from the NW, so the faces will be clean, but that much energy on a beach/groyne/river setup is going to be a handful – maybe even more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. The swell direction from the SSE is a bit off the optimum for this spot, which likes it from the SE, so the shape might not be perfect.
Before that, there’s a small window on Wednesday, 26th August in the afternoon. You get a 3ft swell from the SSE with a 5-second period, so weak and short-period (combined energy just 45). It’s surfable but very ordinary. The wind goes glassy though, which is a major positive – it’ll be clean. Not a standout, just a chance to get wet if you’re desperate.
After the big day on the 27th, it drops right back off. The 28th goes tiny again, and then there’s nothing much worth paddling out for right through to the end of the window. A few days with a 4ft swell from the south show up at the very end, but the wind is all over the place and the energy is weak.
So, the only true standout here is Thursday, 27th August. It’s the only day with significant size and power. If you’re an experienced local wanting some big, clean, offshore waves, that’s your one shot.
