Alright, let’s break this down in feet and miles per hour for the imperial crew.
Thurso East is a right-hand point break that takes a north-northwest swell, and it’s an expert spot – not for beginners.
First up, Tuesday, July 7th is a nice little window. Morning brings a 3ft west swell at 9 seconds, with glassy east wind at 3 mph. The water temp is normal for this time of year, nothing unusual. The combined swell energy is 232 (moderate), and it’s clean and rideable. Afternoon is the same, just a touch less energy at 213. Solid start.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Wednesday the 8th through Sunday the 12th, it’s mostly onshore winds, poor conditions, and weak energy readings. A couple of days show 4ft to 4ft swell, but the wind is all wrong – cross-shore or onshore. Not worth it.
The real standout is Tuesday, July 14th. Morning shows 3ft from the west-northwest with an 11-second period – that’s genuine groundswell. The wind is offshore from the east-southeast at 9 mph, and the energy is 219 (moderate). That’s clean, lined-up, good quality surf for the point. The afternoon stays offshore but the wind picks up to 12 mph, so it’s a little bumpier but still rideable.
Wednesday the 15th has offshore wind again, but the swell drops to 2ft and the period slips to 10 seconds, with energy down to 100 (weak). Surfable but ordinary.
After that, it’s tiny. From Thursday the 16th onward, we’re looking at 1ft and below, with energy readings between 23 and 32. That’s basically flat. There’s a small bump on Monday, July 20th with 3ft from the north and offshore wind, but the period is only 8 seconds and energy is 93 (weak). Not worth chasing.
So, the two best calls are Tuesday, July 7th for clean small waves, and Tuesday, July 14th for the best quality groundswell with clean offshore wind. Everything else is either blown out or flat.
