The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The forecast is pretty flat for the next week and a half. What we’ve got is a long, slow wait for anything that’s actually worth paddling out for. The whole 16-day window starts with a big gap – nothing really on offer for the first nine days. The surf just isn’t there. But hang in there, because the tail end of the forecast is where it gets interesting.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday, the 28th of July. This is the standout in the whole outlook. Salcombe is a sheltered spot, and it’s about to get a pulse of life. The morning of the 28th is the time to be in the water. We’re looking at a 4ft swell rolling in from the west, with a solid 10-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy hitting the coast, with a combined energy reading of 330. That’s a strong, meaty push. The wind is offshore and gentle, which means it’s going to be clean. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, which is fine. Just keep in mind that this spot is inconsistent and can get always crowded, so get there early. This is a rare chance for a clean, moderate-sized day.
After that, things drop off again. The rest of the second week is mostly small, messy, or blown out. The morning of Sunday, the 2nd of August has a 4ft west swell, but it’s being hammered by a strong breeze, making it a clean but wind-affected session. Not a standout, but worth a look if you’re desperate. The afternoon of the 2nd is the same deal – clean but strong wind.
The rest of the period is a write-off for surfers. The breaks are too small, the wind is onshore, or the energy is just too weak. Honestly, for most of this forecast, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially with those strong, clean cross-off winds later in the run.
