Table - best surf conditions forecast for Salcombe over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s have a proper look at Salcombe. It’s a sheltered little corner down here, and it can be a bit of a beggar to get going. From where we stand now, looking sixteen days ahead, it’s a tale of two halves, and mostly one you might want to sleep through.
The water here is sitting at 64°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s properly toasty for July, you’d be in a spring suit or less.
Now, the first week is largely a write-off. There’s really nothing worth paddling out for until the tail end of that period. The surf is small, the wind is messy, and the energy just isn’t there. It’s a long, quiet stretch with no real recommendations.
Things start to get interesting around Wednesday July 15th afternoon. That’s when the wind swings offshore from the WSW at just 6 mph, and we get a clean, cross-off breeze on a chest-high 2 ft swell from the east. The energy is moderate at 511, but the wave quality turns good for the first time. It’s not a classic Salcombe day – the swell direction is wrong for its optimum south – but if you’re desperate, you’ll find a few lined-up ones. Crowds are always a thing here, so expect company.
Thursday July 16th morning offers a similar vibe: a 2 ft east swell with a light offshore NW wind at 6 mph and clean conditions. The energy drops to 356, but it’s still surfable. Again, not world-class, but a morning session could be fun.
For the absolute standout, you have to look to Wednesday July 22nd afternoon. That’s a full week further out, so treat it with a pinch of salt, but the signals are there. A 2 ft swell from the WSW, which is a touch closer to Salcombe’s sweet spot, with a cross-off breeze from the WSW at 15 mph. The energy jumps to 200, and it’s clean. For a spot that rarely fires and is as inconsistent as they come, this could be your best shout of the whole window. The swell direction isn’t perfect, but that cross-off wind will groom it.
Overall, there are only a few windows where the stars align. The best of the bunch is that Wednesday July 22nd afternoon – it’s the one to keep an eye on.
Stay safe, watch the rips, and don’t be a kook.
Rusty.
