Table - best surf conditions forecast for Salcombe over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s get real about Salcombe. I’ve been staring at this 16-day window and honestly, it’s a tough one. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of days with poor surf conditions, mostly onshore or cross-shore winds, and very little energy coming in. It’s not until the very end of the outlook that things start to get interesting.
From the get-go, the 13th of July through the 23rd is a real grind. The swell is small, the wind is a mess, and you’re looking at a whole lot of chop and lumpy water. The combined energy is weak, barely breaking 100 for most of that time, and often sitting in the low double digits. There’s a little clean-up on the 16th and 17th in the afternoons, but the swell is miniscule – think knee-high slop. It’s just not worth paddling out for.
The tide turns, though, starting on the 26th of July. The wind swings offshore and we finally see a proper pulse. The 27th looks promising with clean, offshore conditions and a solid 8ft swell from the west-southwest. The combined energy jumps to 611 (moderate), and the period is 8 seconds, which is a decent short-period swell. It’s a little on the stronger side, so this is more for the competent crew. The 28th is the real standout, though. Tuesday morning, the 28th of July, we’ve got a 8ft swell from the west with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 2413 (very strong). The wind is offshore and clean. This is the one to circle on the calendar. If you’re an experienced surfer, get on it. It’s not beginner territory – that’s proper size and power.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, no big anomaly there. The Rip (Salcombe) is a sheltered spot, so it needs that perfect direction to light up. When the swell is long-period like that 10-second pulse, it might be a bit straight for the beach, but the point and the reef setups should be handling it well.
So, here’s the bottom line: suffer through the flat spell, then cash in on the 27th and especially the 28th. That’s your window.
