Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Salcombe over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up – there’s nothing worth paddling out for in this whole 16-day run. Not a single session that gets a thumbs up. The window from now (July 6) right through to July 21 is a complete blank. That’s a long stretch with no decent surf. Salcombe’s always been an inconsistent little spot, sheltered and fussy about direction – it usually needs a good S swell to fire, but we’re stuck with W and E pulses that just don’t line up. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s about 3° above average, so it feels a bit more like summer bathwater, but that’s the only silver lining.
We get tiny waves most days – 2ft to 2ft, with periods around 9 to 10 seconds – and combined energy staying weak, mostly under 100. A couple of afternoons have light cross-off winds, giving clean faces, but the swell’s just too small and weak to bother. Around July 11 and 12 there’s a spike in energy – up to 194 and then 346 – with 5ft to 6ft of short-period E swell (6 to 7 seconds). That’s not groundswell; it’s lumpy, choppy, and the winds are cross or cross-on, making it messy. On July 12 morning, a strong breeze from ENE at 25 mph turns it into a washing machine. By July 15 we see 7ft, even 8ft on July 16, but again with short period, onshore winds, and poor quality. Those big numbers on the energy scale (744) might look exciting, but it’s just windswell – way too straight and choppy for a decent wave.
Honestly, it’s a write-off. For a break that’s already inconsistent, this kind of blank run is pretty normal. Forecasts can change, but right now I’d say save the wax for another time.
