Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Salcombe has got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch. We're looking at a run of small, weak swell and onshore or cross-shore winds that just won't let up. The water's sitting around average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
The first couple of days, Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th, we've got tiny little 2ft dribblers from the west, but the wind is all wrong – cross-off or cross-on, just making a mess of what little energy is there. The combined energy is weak, barely cracking 83 early on, and it just drops off from there. Honestly, it's poor.
Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th, the swell drops even further to a pathetic 2ft. The wind flips around from the east on Wednesday too, putting a nasty cross-on chop on the surface. Not worth paddling out for anything but a float.
Thursday the 9th through to Monday the 13th is just more of the same – we're stuck in a rut. Tiny, weak, poor quality surf. The wind stays gnarly, gusting up to 28 mph from the east-northeast at times, just ripping across the water. The combined energy is consistently in the weak zone, often under 60. It's a total write-off.
There is a small pulse that shows up around Tuesday the 14th. We see the combined energy bump to 138 in the morning, with a 2ft, 10-second period swell from the west. The wind is still a fresh cross-onshore though, which will keep it lumpy. It's a tease more than anything else.
The one standout, and I use that term loosely, is the run from Thursday the 16th into Friday the 17th. On the morning of the 16th we get a clean moment with a light cross-off breeze from the north-northeast, but the swell is only 2ft – barely a ripple. Then on Friday the 17th, we see some size pick up with 4ft of short period windswell from the east and northeast. The combined energy reaches 194 by the afternoon, which is moderate energy. But here's the catch: the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore on Friday morning, turning into a lumpy cross-onshore in the afternoon. It's gonna be a messy, choppy affair. A kite surfer would be loving it, but for a paddle surfer, it's a struggle.
For the rest of the second week, it peters out again. A couple of clean-looking days on Sunday the 19th with 2ft from the northeast? Periods of 4 seconds, though. No juice, no power.
To be honest, there isn't a true standout. If I had to pick the best of a bad bunch, the morning of Tuesday the 14th has the most energy, but the wind is junk. The Friday the 17th has the most size, but the wind is also junk. It's a lean period, folks. Sometimes the ocean just says no. We'll have to wait for the pattern to shift.
Rusty.
