Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a long look at the charts for our patch, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one.
For the next two weeks, Salcombe is just not offering anything worth paddling out for. Every single day in the forecast comes back as poor surf conditions. It’s a real dry spell. We’re looking at a blank run from now, Tuesday the 7th of July, all the way through to at least the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July. That’s a solid two-week gap with no decent rides on the table.
Even when the swell ticks up a bit, the wind is always in the wrong spot. Take the weekend of the 11th and 12th of July – we see some moderate combined swell energy (reaching 456 on Sunday morning), but it’s coming straight out of the east with a short, choppy 7-second period, and the wind is either a lumpy cross-shore or a messy cross-onshore. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. By the 13th and 14th of July, energy climbs into strong territory (up to 655), but with a strong breeze onshore, it’s just going to be a complete mess – that’s strictly for the kite crew, not for us paddle surfers.
There are a couple of glassy moments, like Thursday afternoon the 9th of July and the morning of Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th of July, but the swell is tiny – around 2 ft to 3 ft – and lacks any punch. It’s just not worth the effort.
Honestly, this area can go quiet like this. It’s normal. The good news is the forecast can always flip. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, give the boards a wax and find something else to do. I’ll be back when the ocean wakes up.
Rusty.
