Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me give you the honest scoop on what’s coming up for our little corner of the coast.
Straight up, this is a tough run. We’re looking at a long patch of quiet, underwhelming surf over the next couple of weeks. The water is sitting at 63°F which is unusually warm for this time of year, a good 4°F above normal, so it feels more like late summer than early July. But that’s about the only thing that’s pumping.
The best and really the only period worth paddling out for is the first couple of days. We kick off on Thursday, July 2nd with a pulse of swell. Thursday morning is a bit of a mission – we’ve got a 6ft west swell but the wind is a stiff 19 mph cross-off from the WNW. It’s lumpy and the wave energy is moderate (255). You could get out there if you’re desperate, but it won’t be pretty. Thursday afternoon is a much better call. The wind swings offshore from the WNW at 12 mph and the swell drops to a cleaner 5ft from the west with a longer period of 9 seconds. The energy is still moderate (351) and the conditions are surfable, though still very ordinary. It’s your best bet of the whole run, but don’t expect perfection.
Friday, July 3rd, is a real tease. The morning goes glassy with a light SSW breeze and a clean 4ft west swell (period 10 seconds, energy 236). It looks beautiful but it’s labelled as poor surf. Small and weak. By afternoon, the wind picks up cross-off again and the swell drops under 3ft.
From Saturday, July 4th onwards, it’s a slow fade. Swell heights tumble below 3ft and the combined energy drops into double digits – weak stuff. The wind stays cross-off or cross-shore for most of it, but the waves just don’t have any legs. There’s a long gap with no real recommendations at all, lasting from Saturday the 4th right the way through to the end of the forecast on July 17th. That’s nearly two weeks of flat to tiny, poor quality surf.
Looking into the second week, nothing changes. The swell tries to flicker back up around 3ft on July 13th but the period is short at 5-6 seconds and the wind is messy. By July 16th and 17th, we’re talking about swell under 1ft. The water will still be warm, but you’ll be floating on a lake.
Honestly, if you can, get out Thursday afternoon. That’s the standout. Otherwise, keep the board in the car and watch the forecast – it can’t stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
