The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Salcombe.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak picture for the next 16 days. The forecast is a long stretch of flat, messy, or just plain poor conditions. We’re looking at a solid 16-day run with no proper surf on offer. That’s the whole forecast window, from the 15th of July right through to the 30th. There’s not a single standout session in there.
The water is a bit of a talking point, though. It’s sitting at 65°F, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year – over 5°F above average. That’s very unusual.
Right, let’s break it down. For the first week, we’ve got some small, weak swell, but the wind is all wrong. Wednesday the 15th sees a 4ft easterly swell, but with a 35 km/h cross-shore wind, it’s just a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined energy is a weak 133. Thursday and Friday are even smaller, with the same wind issues. By Saturday the 18th, the swell drops to a tiny 0.7ft, so it’s completely flat. That pattern of small, wind-affected swell and flat spells carries right through the middle of the period.
As we get into the second week, there’s a glimmer of something on the 25th and 26th of July. We see a small 2ft swell from the west, and the wind finally turns *cross-offshore* and light. Conditions look *clean*. But the combined energy is still only around 55-60, and the swell is tiny. It’s not worth getting excited about. The rest of the week is more of the same: tiny groundswell from the west with periods around 8-10 seconds, but the winds are cross or cross-on, keeping it choppy.
The very end of the period, around the 29th and 30th, sees a little more west swell, but it’s still weak, and the wind is blowing cross-shore. It’s just not going to come together.
For a sheltered spot like Salcombe that needs a clean southerly swell, this is a tough run. The swell is all from the wrong direction, and the wind is rarely on our side. There’s just nothing to recommend here. Keep the board in the car, but don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long wait.
