The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Salcombe over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough start. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at a lot of wind-battered, choppy, and generally poor surf conditions. There’s a real gap here, with nothing worth paddling out for from the 22nd of August all the way through to the morning of the 3rd of September. It’s one of those frustrating runs where the forecast just doesn’t line up.
Then, finally, a glimmer. The morning of Thursday the 4th of September is the standout. The swell is going to be a solid 10ft from the SW, with a decent 10-second period. That’s proper groundswell, packing a punch – the combined energy is a hefty 1511. The real kicker? The wind is light and offshore, swinging around from the W at just 9 mph. That’s gonna make Salcombe clean, glassy, and absolutely firing. This is a big swell though, more than 8ft, so this one’s for the experienced crew only. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there.
The rest of the run-up to that day is a write-off, and after that Friday morning, it drops off sharply again. The 5th and 6th of September are back to small, weak waves with hardly any energy - just 3ft and energy readings in the double digits. Not worth the wetty.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a long, boring wait, but that Thursday morning, the 4th of September, is your one true shot. Set your alarm, because that’s as good as it gets.
