The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Salcombe over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you, it’s looking pretty grim for a while. The first week is a real struggle, with hardly any surf to speak of and when there is a little bump, the wind is messing it up. We’re looking at tiny waves, mostly under 1 ft, and a lot of cross-onshore breezes. The water is a balmy 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a full 5° above the average, so you’ll be sweating in the wettie, but there’s no wave to enjoy it on.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t come until Sunday the 26th of July. The morning sees a bit of a pulse, with a 4 ft swell from the west, but it’s a short-period 6-second windswell, so it’ll be a bit messy. The combined energy is only 97 (weak), and with a moderate cross-offshore wind, it might be clean but won’t have much push. That afternoon, it pretty much vanishes.
We then get a few days of tiny, clean waves, but nothing that’s going to get you out of bed. The morning of Wednesday the 29th of July has a 2 ft west swell with a 7-second period, and light cross-offshore winds, but the energy is still only 62 (weak). It’s clean, but barely rideable.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Monday the 3rd of August. We finally see a bit of a jump in energy. The morning has a 4 ft swell from the east, with a 6-second period. The combined energy is 153 (moderate), so there’s finally some power in the water. However, the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NE, creating a cross-chop, and for a sheltered spot like Salcombe that needs a south swell, an east swell is coming from the wrong direction. It’s the best on offer, but it’s not pretty. The afternoon is similar, with a 3 ft east swell and 102 (moderate) energy, but still cross-shore wind.
Overall, it’s a bleak 16 days. The first week is a write-off, and the second week offers only a few sessions of very average, small, and poorly-aligned surf. The spot is inconsistent at the best of times, and this forecast confirms that. Don’t hold your breath.
