The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a bit of a flat spell for the most part. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with poor conditions, so don’t get your hopes up for any quick sessions. There’s a glimmer of something towards the very end, but you’ll need patience.
The first real chance of a wave comes early on Sunday the 19th of July. Salcombe is our only spot, and it’s a sheltered, inconsistent break that rarely sees proper swell. Sunday morning sees a bump of 4 ft from the east, with a short period of 6 seconds and moderate combined energy of (112). The trouble is a fresh cross-shore breeze from the ENE at 19 mph, making for lumpy, messy conditions. It's not a great look, and the water is a warm 66° with a much warmer than normal anomaly for this time of year.
After that, we’re back to tiny, poor surf all the way through to the end of July. There’s a glimmer of hope on the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July, with glassy conditions and 1.0 ft of swell, but it’s just too small to be worth a paddle. The afternoon of the 22nd cleans up with a moderate offshore from the NW, but again, the wave height is 1.0 ft – it’s a flat spell, plain and simple.
We then hit a long gap of many days with nothing to recommend. Finally, on the morning of Friday the 31st of July, a pulse of swell arrives. Salcombe sees 6 ft from the east, with a short period of 6 seconds and strong combined energy of (245). The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WSW at 16 mph, so the surface will be tidy. That’s the standout of the whole 16-day window – it’s the biggest swell, and it’s clean. But remember, at 6 ft, this is edging into territory that’s a bit much for beginners. The swell is short period, so it won’t have the power of a groundswell, but it’s the best we’ve got. The rest of the first week of August fades back into tiny, weak surf. A long wait for a brief, clean bump.
Rusty.
