The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real with you right off the bat: this whole 16-day window for Challaborough is a bit of a tough one. The swell is tiny and the wind is mostly junk. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 66°F.

We’re staring at a long, frustrating gap here. From Thursday the 6th right through to early in the second week, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, with values mostly in the single digits and low tens. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.

Things start to look a little more promising around Thursday the 13th. The swell bumps up a notch, but the wind is still a cross-on. The combined energy climbs to 121 (moderate) by the afternoon, but it’s still classified as poor surf. The real potential shows up on Saturday the 15th. The afternoon sees a 3ft swell from the W with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 220 (moderate). The wind goes cross-shore, which is better, but it’s a moderate breeze. It’s still not the cleanest, but it’s the closest we get to a real window.

Then, as we push into the second week, we get a couple of mornings that catch the eye. Wednesday the 19th morning has a 5ft swell from the WSW, but it’s a short 6-second period, and the wind is onshore. The energy is moderate at 123. Thursday the 20th morning is similar, with a 5ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a very short 5 seconds. The wind is light cross-on, and the energy is 110. It’s not classic, but it’s the biggest swell of the run.

The honest truth is, there is no standout. For a break that’s already inconsistent, this forecast is a dry spell. The best bet in the whole 16 days, and it’s a long shot, would be the morning of Thursday the 20th. The 5ft swell from the WSW (afternoon) is the biggest we see, but the onshore wind and short period will make it choppy and fat. This is more of a "check the cam" situation than a "load the boards" one.

Rusty.
