The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.
Constantine Bay (beach and reef) is our only spot on the radar, and to be honest, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The water’s sitting pretty average for the time of year, nothing unusual temperature-wise. The first solid surf doesn’t really show until the 21st, and even then it’s a real mixed bag.
Thursday the 20th is a write-off – rain showers, strong cross-onshore winds around 22 mph, and a lumpy 7 ft swell from the west. Energy is moderate at 718, but the conditions are just poor. Not worth paddling out.
Friday the 21st morning offers a slight glimmer. A clean 3 ft west swell with a cross-off breeze from the NNE at 15 mph. It’s only marginal, with a short 8-second period, and the energy is weak at 211. Usable if you’re desperate, but the afternoon turns cross-shore and choppy.
Saturday the 22nd morning is the best of a bad bunch early on. Clean conditions, light ENE breeze at 6 mph, and a tiny 2 ft west swell with a 10-second period. Energy is weak at 129. It’s small, but the glassy wind and clean lines make it a proper longboard morning. The afternoon drops off even more.
From Sunday the 23rd through to the 26th, we’re in a proper lull. Swell barely hits 0.7 ft to 3 ft, with short periods and messy wind. The energy is pitiful, often under 100. There’s a brief moment on the 26th afternoon with a 4 ft west swell at 7 seconds, but it’s still poor surf conditions with fresh cross-off winds. Honestly, not much to get excited about.
The 27th and 28th bring a bit more size – 4 ft to 5 ft west swells – but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and lumpy. Energy picks up to moderate (237-398), but the quality just isn’t there.
Now, the 29th of August starts to look interesting. A 7 ft west-northwest swell with 8-second period and fresh cross-onshore winds makes for a bumpy ride. Energy is strong at 614, but it’s a messy, expert-only affair. By the 30th, we get a 6 ft west-southwest swell with a clean cross-off breeze from the SSE at 19 mph – that’s the best combo in the whole forecast. Energy is moderate-solid at 416, and the clean conditions could offer some decent waves for the gutsy intermediate.
The 31st of August into early September sees a big spike: a 10 ft west swell with 11-second period and 2446 energy. That’s serious power, but the fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy conditions will make it a battle. Only for the experts, and even then, it’s not clean.
September 1st and 2nd are smaller again, with 3 ft to 6 ft west-northwest swells, but the wind stays cross-onshore and choppy. The 3rd and 4th are a write-off with strong winds and messy seas.
Overall, the standout window is the morning of the 30th of August. A 6 ft west-southwest swell, clean cross-off wind, good energy. That’s the one to circle. The 29th afternoon has size but is lumpy. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too messy.
Rusty.
