The Lowdown
Right, folks. Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's happening with our local stretch of coast. To be honest, it’s a bit of a tough run ahead, but there might be a few windows if you know where to look.
Constantine Bay (Trevorrian) is our only game in town for the next couple of weeks, and it's a beach and reef set-up that usually handles a good lick of swell but needs the right wind to get its act together. The water is sitting at 66.2°F which is much warmer than normal for the time of year, so you could leave the thick winter wetsuit at home for sure.
We kick things off this week, and I have to be straight with you; the first few days are a real struggle. Tuesday the 11th is flat with a tiny 1.3ft swell on it and a stiff cross-off shore wind making it messy. Not worth getting wet. Wednesday the 12th offers the most promise in this first part of the outlook. The swell pushes up to 2.6ft to 3.0ft from the west, with a period of 9-10 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (126-139). The big news is the wind; Wednesday afternoon goes glassy. A light, offshore NNE breeze will clean those waves right up. This will be the standout in an otherwise ordinary week. The waves won't be huge, but they'll be clean and surfable, which is a win. You'll need to make the most of it, though.
After that, things get blown out. Thursday (13th) sees the swell bump up a touch but the wind swings onshore and it gets choppy. Friday (14th) has a 4.6ft swell but it’s onshore again and messy. Saturday (15th) and Sunday (16th) are poor, with weak swells and the wrong wind. This whole period from Thursday onward is a write-off for decent surfing.
Looking into the second week, there’s a glimmer on Monday the 17th morning. A 3.9ft swell from the west with a moderate cross-off wind and moderate combined energy (231). It'll be a bit of a gamble, the score is marginal, but it might be the cleanest and biggest we see all week. The afternoon gets howling with a 22 mph cross-shore, so don't bother.
Things then get worse until Sunday the 23rd of August morning, when the swell gets bigger, hitting 5.9ft from the southwest. The problem is the wind is hammering from the WSW at 19 mph, making for a lumpy, cross-onshore mess. The combined energy is strong (458), but it's a kite surfer’s dream, not a paddle surfer's.
The final few days in the forecast, around the 24th and 25th of August, are a big red flag. A massive, raw swell is forecast. On Monday the 24th morning, we’re looking at an 11.5ft swell from the WNW with a very long period of 10 seconds and a combined energy of 1970. That’s a huge amount of power. But the wind is a near-gale from the WNW. This is expert-only territory and even then, it’s going to be a beast. It’s way too big and wild for nearly everyone. The drop in size on Tuesday the 25th to 8.2ft is still punchy, but still blown out.
In summary, if you're keen, you've got Wednesday the 12th afternoon for some small, glassy waves. Monday the 17th morning might be a solid, clean, long-shot session. The rest of the fortnight is either too small, too onshore, too messy, or simply too dangerous.
Stay safe out there.
