The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at Constantine Bay for the next sixteen days.
Straight up, there’s a big dry spell before anything worth paddling out for. The first real shot of surf is on the morning of Tuesday, July 21st. Before that, from now through late Monday the 20th, it’s all flat and blown out. Tiny swells with wind from the wrong angles – cross-shores and onshores – just no rideable face on offer. You’re better off leaving the board in the car.
That Tuesday morning, the 21st, is your best bet. Constantine Bay is a beach and reef break that’s exposed to the west, which is where we want the swell coming from. We’re looking at a 0.4m swell from the west-northwest with a 10-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell for this size, meaning cleaner shapes. The combined energy is 54 (weak energy). The big win is the wind: a light 9 mph offshore from the east-northeast. That’ll keep the waves clean and glassy. It’s a very small wave, but clean, and with a nice little push. Crowds are possible here, and on a clean morning like that, expect some company. The water temperature on that morning is 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus.
The afternoon of the 21st kills it – wind swings north and kicks up to 19 mph, making it lumpy. After that, it’s back to poor conditions through the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th with cross-shore winds and tiny waves.
We see a lift in size on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, with swell hitting 1.2m (about 4 feet) from the west and northwest. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (135). But here’s the catch – the wind is onshore and cross-onshore from the northwest and west at 16 to 19 mph. That’s going to chop it up proper. For a beginner, that Sunday morning size (1.1m / 4 feet) is okay wave height, but the onshore wind makes it messy. For experts, it’s just not clean. Honestly, with that much cross-onshore breeze and decent energy, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing that weekend.
The last week of July into early August fades again – small swells, more cross-winds, and a bit of rain on the 28th. There’s a pulse on the 31st with combined energy at 184 (moderate) and a 1.1m swell from the west-southwest, but it’s cross-onshore wind again and choppy.
So here’s the deal: the real standout is that Tuesday morning, July 21st. Tiny but clean with a good period and offshore wind. Don’t sleep on it, because after that, it’s a long, bummer stretch of blown-out slop.
Rusty.
