The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Constantine Bay.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. The next couple of weeks are looking like a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. There’s a long gap of poor conditions right through the start of the period, with the first sniff of anything happening not coming until the morning of the 28th of July, and even that’s marginal. We’re talking about a solid week plus of nothing worth getting wet for.
The first thing that catches the eye is a pulse of energy on the 28th. The morning of the 28th sees a swell of 6ft, with a period of 7 seconds, from the north. The combined energy is moderate (684). The wind is a light cross-onshore, which will keep it fairly choppy, but it’s the only real window. The afternoon wave height drops to 7ft, but the energy is a bit lower (598) and the wind is still cross-onshore. At that size, 7ft, it’s pushing into expert-only territory. The short period (7 seconds) and the north swell direction mean it’s not going to be the most user-friendly wave, and with the wind on it, it’ll be a battle. For a beach and reef setup, the short period will make it a bit jumbled. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
After that, it’s back to poor surf conditions for the rest of the run. The wind turns onshore from the west on the 29th, and the swell drops right off. There’s a brief moment on the 31st of July with a clean cross-off wind from the ESE, but the swell is tiny (4ft) and weak (136 energy), so it’s not going to be offering much. The wind is a fresh breeze, which will be strong, but it’s cross-off, so the surface will be clean. The swell is from the WNW, which is a decent direction for this spot, but the size just isn’t there.
Given the lack of quality surf, the strong onshore winds and the beach and reef setup, this is looking more like a kite surfing window than a paddle surfing one. For the seasoned wave rider, hold out for the 28th, but don’t get your hopes up. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a quiet period.
Rusty.
