The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Constantine Bay over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – this isn’t one of those classic Cornish swells that gets the blood pumping. The general pattern is weak, small, and mostly messy. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions kicking off the forecast, so don’t expect much action for a while.
Right from Tuesday 14th July, it’s a tough start. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the north with a short 6-second period, and cross-off winds from the ENE at 9 mph. The combined energy is weak (84). It’s clean looking, but there’s just no power. Tuesday afternoon turns glassy with a 0.7ft swell from the WSW, but that’s a long 18-second period which doesn’t really help a beach and reef setup like this – it’ll likely just roll through without much shape. The energy is low (70). You could get a slide, but it’s flat more than it’s surfable.
Wednesday 15th July is more of the same: small north swells, weak energy, cross-off winds. The combined energy dips into the 50s and even down to 18 by the afternoon. There’s simply no push. Thursday 16th brings a bit more wind from the NNE at 12 mph, but it’s cross-off and the swell stays tiny and weak. We are in a real lull here.
Friday 17th July morning offers a moment of calm – glassy conditions with a 2ft NNW swell, but the period is a paltry 6 seconds. Energy is low (47). It’s surfable but nothing to write home about. From there, the wind picks up and stays fresh, blowing cross-shore or cross-shore with chop right through until the 24th of July. There are several days here where a surfer would just be fighting the wind more than the wave. The swell does nudge up a little on Sunday 19th July morning to 4ft from the north, but it’s coming with a fresh 19 mph cross breeze and a short 5-second period, and the energy (76) is still weak. It’s messy.
The first true standout is hard to find, but if we’re being honest, Saturday 25th July morning shows a pulse of better energy. We see a 2ft swell from the WNW with a nice 12-second period, giving us moderate combined energy (121). It’s onshore from the WNW at 6 mph though, so expect bumpy conditions. The next day, Sunday 26th July morning, the swell jumps to 5ft from the west with an 8-second period, and the energy is strong (372), but it’s cross-onshore with a fresh 19 mph breeze and lumpy. This is looking more like a kite day.
Then Monday 27th July morning, we hit the biggest swell of the period: 7ft from the west, 8 seconds, and combined energy of 520. That’s a solid, powerful swell, but the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW at 9 mph, keeping it fairly choppy. The swell size now is over 5ft, so it’s pushing beyond beginner territory, and at 7ft, it’s getting into the intermediate-to-expert zone. With the wind direction, the waves will be lumpy and hard to line up. This setup, with that strong energy and a beach and reef break, actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Tuesday 29th July morning brings another standout in size: a 7ft west swell with 8 seconds, and very strong energy (650). But again, it’s cross-onshore from the SW at 19 mph, making conditions messy and challenging.
So, for the best on offer across the whole 16 days, it’s a really tough call. Nothing here is pristine. If I had to point you somewhere, Monday 27th July has the size for a confident intermediate to expert surfer who doesn’t mind a bit of chop. The swell direction is west, which is close to Constantine Bay’s optimum westerly direction. But don’t expect perfection. The forecast confidence late in the period is low, so watch the wind shifts.
Honestly, for now, it’s a waiting game. The near-term shows very little, and the long-range has size but no quality. Keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
