The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – the forecast for Constantine Bay over the next 16 days is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of basically nothing worth paddling out for. The whole period is a flat spell, with tiny waves and a lot of wind problems. There’s no standout session, no day to circle on the calendar. If you’re hoping for a proper surf, you’re going to be waiting a while.
The first few days kick off on Wednesday 15 July with a tiny 1 ft swell from the west, but it’s clean with a light offshore breeze. The problem is the combined energy is only 19, so it’s weak. That’s the story for the next few days: Thursday 16 July still has that 1 ft west swell, but the wind turns cross-off from the north-northeast, and it’s still clean. The energy is still low at 34. Friday 17 July sees a slight bump to 2 ft from the north-northwest, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s weak and messy. The wind is cross-shore, adding a bit of chop. The energy stays low at 41.
Saturday 18 July shows a little more size, with 3 ft from the north, but the period is still short at 5 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the north at 30 km/h, making it lumpy. The energy is 65 – still weak. Then it drops right back down. Sunday 19 July is tiny again, 0.7 ft, with a messy cross-off wind. The energy is 6. The entire first week is a washout.
The second week doesn’t get much better. Monday 20 July has 2 ft from the north with a short period, and the wind is cross-shore. The energy is 38. Tuesday 21 July is a bit cleaner with a 1 ft west-northwest swell and a 10-second period, but the energy is only 60. Wednesday 22 July has a glassy morning with a 1 ft west swell, but it’s tiny. The energy is 28. Thursday 23 July is also glassy in the morning, but again, only 1 ft. The energy is 30.
Then, on Saturday 25 July, we finally see a real bump. Swell hits 5 ft from the north-northwest with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 245 – that’s moderate energy. But it’s a cross-onshore wind from the north-northwest at 15 km/h, making it choppy. The surf quality is still rated poor. Sunday 26 July keeps the size, but the wind swings to a strong cross-onshore from the west-southwest at 40 km/h, making it messy. The energy is 276. That’s the biggest pulse of the period, but it’s blown out. For a beach and reef setup like Constantine Bay, it’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle-surfing one.
From Monday 27 July onward, it drops back to tiny 0.7 ft to 1 ft swells with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The energy is low, usually under 20. The last few days look like a total flat spell.
So, what’s the call? The best on offer is that Saturday 25 July window, with 5 ft of swell, but it’s a messy, choppy mess. If you’re desperate, you might find a lump, but don’t hold your breath. The water temperature anomaly isn’t mentioned, so it’s about average for the time of year. For now, the board stays on the rack. It’s a quiet run, but forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
