The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Constantine Bay. The next week and a half is a real mix of tiny, clean surf and then a big, messy pulse later. Don’t expect much early on – we’ve got a quiet start, a long stretch of poor conditions, and then some size that’s more for the experienced crew.
Starting Saturday, the 22nd of August morning, we’ve got 0.5m swell from the west, 10-second period, with light east-northeast offshore breeze. It’s clean but weak – wave energy is only 96. The water temp is about average for this time of year. That’s your best bet for a peaceful, small-wave session. By Saturday afternoon, the wind picks up and it goes marginal.
Sunday the 23rd is similar: tiny 0.2m swell from the west-southwest, long 14-second period, with light offshore wind from the east-northeast. Clean but barely rideable, energy at 42. Then we get into a real dry spell: Monday through Wednesday, the 24th to the 26th of August, bring fresh offshore and cross-shore winds, surf under 0.7m, and energy in the double digits – just flat and frustrating. That’s about three days of nothing solid.
Thursday the 27th of August morning brings a sudden jump to 3.0m from the west, but only 8 seconds – that’s short-period windswell. Energy is moderate at 1331. The wind is gentle cross-onshore from the south-west, making it choppy. With swell over 2.5m, this is expert-only. The rest of that week stays windy and onshore, with waves from 1.1m to 3.0m – all scored as poor.
The real standout in size shows up on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Morning sees 2.1m from the west-southwest, 9-second period, with a moderate cross-shore breeze from the south. Energy is 749 – solid but lumpy. The afternoon improves: 2.5m from the west, 10-second period, strong energy at 1630. But wind is cross-shore from the south-southwest at 25 km/h, bringing a cross-chop. It’s marginal, not clean.
Thursday the 3rd of September packs the biggest punch: 3.0m from the west, an 11-second period in the morning, and energy roaring at 2423. However, the wind is cross-onshore and moderate, so expect chop. Afternoon keeps the same size with a cross-shore breeze from the south-southwest – still lumpy. This is expert-only country, and with the onshore wind, it could be more of a kite-surfing day than a clean paddle session. Constantine Bay is a beach and reef setup, so the waves will be breaking hard.
After that, Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th drop off, with fresh cross-shore winds and waves around 1.8m to 2.2m – still choppy. By Sunday the 6th of September, it’s back to tiny 0.9m and weak energy (95).
So, bottom line: Saturday the 22nd of August morning is your clean, small session. For the big stuff, Thursday the 3rd of September has the most power, but the wind is a problem. Otherwise, it’s a quiet few weeks with a couple of wild cards. Stay tuned.
