The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Constantine Bay has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you, this isn't going to be a classic run, but there might be a couple of windows if you're keen.

Right now, the water is feeling incredibly warm for this time of year, sitting about 3° above normal at 67°. That’s a proper anomaly.

We are looking at a long stretch of pretty average conditions kicking off. Sunday the 16th is a write-off with tiny, onshore slop. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th see a bit more size, with the swell hanging around 3ft to 4ft from the WNW, but the onshore winds are just going to ruin it – messy, lumpy, and choppy. It's not worth paddling out for.

The week gets worse before it gets better. From Wednesday the 19th through to Friday the 21st, the swell jumps up a notch – we’re talking 6ft to 7ft from the west – but the onshore winds are strong, hitting 19 to 22 mph. The wave energy is moderate to strong (303 to 594), but the quality is terrible. It's going to be a washing machine. On Thursday the 20th, you've got rain showers to deal with as well.

We finally get a bit of a wind switch around Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd. The wind swings to a cross-offshore direction from the NE and N. The swell drops right back to tiny, pathetic 1ft to 2ft stuff from the north, and the period is super short (5 seconds). It’s clean, sure, but there’s just no power.

Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are more of the same – clean but flat with wave energy barely registering (28 to 62). You'd be better off having a paddle on a sup than catching a wave.

The swell tries to rebuild around Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. We get some 4ft to 5ft swell from the west, and wave energy starts to creep back up (155 to 228), but the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s going to be choppy again.

Now, if you were hoping for a big finish, the last few days look wild but not surfable. On Friday the 28th, we’re looking at strong onshore winds (28 mph) and lumpy 5ft surf. Then Saturday the 29th brings the biggest, most powerful swell of the whole forecast – a 10ft west swell with a combined energy of 1366! That is serious, but the wind is howling onshore at 22 mph. Unless you are an absolute expert looking for a fight, this is going to be a brutal, blown-out mess. It looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. By Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, it’s still big and onshore, so forget about it.

The Verdict: Honestly, there are no real standouts in this 16-day stretch. The conditions just never seem to align properly. The cleanest windows are the 22nd through 25th, but there’s no swell to ride. If you’re desperate, the best of a bad bunch looks like Wednesday morning the 26th at Constantine Bay. The swell is 4ft from the west with moderate energy (155), but the wind is a gentle cross-on, so it will be fairly choppy. It’s not good, it’s just the least bad option.

Stay tuned, things can change. Rusty.
