The Lowdown

Alright, it’s your local surf reporter Rusty here to guide you through the outlook for Constantine Bay (beach and reef). This spot is a classic exposed west-coast setup, usually picks up a lot of swell but it can get messy with the onshore winds. The water’s sitting at around 66°F, feeling a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for quality surf. We kick off on Tuesday 18 August with some small, weak, onshore junk – 6-second period, moderate energy and messy conditions. Nothing to get excited about, that's a hard skip.

Wednesday 19 August stays average; the swell’s still short-period and the wind is howling from the west, blowing straight onshore again. Thursday 20 August brings a bit more size, swell hitting 7ft from the WNW with moderate to strong combined swell energy (654), but the wind swings cross-onshore, making it choppy and sloppy. Not really worth paddling out for.

We finally get a tiny window of light on Friday 21 August in the morning. It’s small, 3ft, with a period of 8 seconds but we get a cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, keeping it clean. It’s only marginal and worth a paddle if you’re desperate for a few small waist-high waves. The rest of the weekend gets shaky again.

Friday afternoon, Saturday, and most of Sunday are let-downs with onshore winds, fading swell, and short-period slop. By Monday 24 August the swell just about disappears – 1.0ft and glassy early but hopelessly small.

Tuesday 25 August afternoon sees a pulse of 5ft west swell at 10 seconds with a fresh cross-offshore breeze, giving clean conditions. The combined energy jumps to 369, which is moderate. This is the most interesting day of the window in the first week but it's still not a standout.

For the second week, things go a bit wild but not good. From Wednesday 26 August through the 1st of September, we get a series of stronger onshore and cross-onshore winds, often fresh to strong, with messy condos. Swell picks up to 8ft by Tuesday 1 September (795 and 857 energy) but the NW wind is cross-onshore and rough – that’s expert-level size but blown to bits, ugly, and only for the brave. That setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle session.

There’s no true standout – no magical day where everything lines up well. If you’re picking, Friday 21 August morning is the cleanest micro-wave window, and Tuesday 25 August afternoon gives you the best chance at some chest-high, clean lines with that cross-offshore breeze. Other than that, it’s a long stretch with a heap of no-go days. Welcome to late summer at Constantine Bay.

Rusty.
