The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here, and I’ve had a proper look at the charts for Constantine Bay over the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bleak picture.
To be honest, there’s nothing on the table that’s worth paddling out for. The entire 16-day window is a write-off. We’re staring down the barrel of a long, quiet stretch with no recommendations at all. It's one of those spells where the sea just goes to sleep.
The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 64°F, which is a nice thing to note, but it’s small consolation when the waves are missing.
We start off with a tiny 1.0ft W swell on Friday the 17th, but the wind is on it and messy, and the combined energy is a paltry 18 – that’s barely a ripple. The whole first week is like that. Straight away on Saturday the 18th, the swell tries to push up to 3ft and even 4ft from the N, but that’s a horrible wind swell with a period of just 5 seconds, and a fresh cross-shore wind (19 mph) is tearing it to bits. The energy gets up to 91, but it’s all junk.
We get a little glimmer on Tuesday morning, the 21st, with a glassy surface and a 3ft NNW swell. The combined energy is 76, and the wind is a slight air. But the period is only 6 seconds, and it’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – that’s about as good as it gets, and it’s not saying much. It’s a session for the longboard if you’re desperate, but don't expect any power.
The second week is even more hopeless. From Wednesday the 23rd onwards, it’s a mix of tiny W and SW swells, never getting above 2ft, and the winds just get worse. By late July and into early August, we’re looking at onshore gales. On the 28th of July, there’s a jump in energy to 132 from a 2ft WNW swell, but the wind is 25 mph straight onshore from the WSW! That’s a washing machine, not a wave. The 29th sees a near gale from the WNW at 31 mph with a 3ft W swell and 127 energy – that’s kitesurfing weather, not paddle surfing. For anyone looking for a wave, it’s a long, blank run. The breaks here are consistent, so it’s rare to see a stretch this poor, but when it goes quiet, it goes quiet.
Keep an eye on it though – things can change.
Rusty.
