The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for our stretch of coast.

The truth is, it’s a pretty slow start and the next week and a half is going to be a real struggle for anything rideable. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple until we get past the 24th. For days on end, the surf is tiny, messy, or just plain flat. You’ll be waiting a while.

The first real flicker of life comes from Constantine Bay itself, but it's not much to write home about. On Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, there’s a tiny 0.7 ft groundswell rolling in from the WSW, with a very long 18-second period. The water is a balmy 66°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual. It’s glassy, dead calm, and the energy is weak (70). It’s surfable, but only just. You’d be on a longboard, and it’s a desperate paddle for a knee-high roller.

The pattern stays grim for over a week. There’s a bit of a bump on Sunday morning, July 19th, with a 3 ft swell from the north and gentle offshore winds from the east, which makes for clean conditions. The energy is still weak (56), and the period is a snappy 6 seconds – it’s not going to have any punch. It’s surfable, but only just.

Things finally start to change around Friday, July 24th. We get a 2 ft, 12-second period swell from the west, and the energy steps up to a moderate 109. The wind is howling offshore from the ESE at 28 mph, so it’ll be clean, but that’s a strong breeze to paddle into. It’s a small window of opportunity for the dedicated.

Saturday, July 25th is a bit better. The morning brings a 3 ft swell from the west, and the wind goes glassy – dead calm. The energy is moderate (105). This is a proper little window of clean, glassy conditions, but it’s still small waves. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy with a cross-shore breeze.

The real standout, and the only one worth getting excited about, is Monday, July 27th. The swell finally picks up to 7 ft from the west, with a moderate 8-second period. The wind, however, is a cross-shore from the south at 16 mph, so it’s going to be a bit choppy. The energy is strong (581). This is a big, powerful swell for Constantine Bay, and at this size, it’s definitely for experienced surfers only. The cross-shore wind will make it bumpy, but there’s serious power in the water. It’s a proper wave, just not the cleanest.

Tuesday, July 28th holds onto the size, with 6 ft swell from the west and strong energy (687) but the wind stays messy from the SSW. The following days drop back down in size.

So, if you’re patient, the best bet is the morning of Saturday, July 25th for a glassy, small clean session, or if you’ve got the skills and don’t mind a bit of chop, the Monday, July 27th is the biggest and most powerful surf of the whole forecast.

Rusty.
