The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what we’ve got for Broadhaven South. I’ll be honest with you, mate, the next two weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. There’s a proper long stretch of nothing on offer to start, and then things finally start to wake up towards the end of the run. You’ll need a bit of patience.
The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Monday, the 27th of July. Before that, it’s a write-off. We’re talking about days and days of tiny, weak swell with nothing worth paddling out for. The energy is just pathetic, barely registering. Even when the wind is offshore and clean, you’re looking at 0.3 ft slop. Not worth getting the wetsuit on.
So, Monday morning, the 27th, we finally get a pulse of swell. The swell comes from the WSW at 5 ft, but the period is a short 6 seconds. That’s a bit of a windswell, not the most exciting. The combined energy is moderate at 210, so there’s some push there. The wind is cross-off from the west at 15 mph, which should keep it reasonably clean. It’s a beach-and-reef setup here, and with that short period, it might be a bit fat and messy. Still, it’s the first real surf we’ve seen in a week.
The best of the whole run, the standout, looks like it’s going to be Friday, the 31st of July. That morning, the swell is up to 7 ft from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is strong at 451 (451). That’s a proper push of water. The wind is light from the WSW at 6 mph, and it’s a cross-off. That should make for clean, lined-up waves. At 7 ft, that’s pushing into expert territory, so be wary if you’re a beginner. The swell direction is west, which is not the optimum SW for this sheltered spot, but with that much energy, it’ll still be working. This is the one you want to circle on the calendar.
After that, the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August sees the swell drop back off, and the wind picks up again, making things choppier. It’s a bit of a letdown after that Friday morning.
One thing to note: the water temp on the 18th of July was 64°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – a touch warmer, so you might not need the thickest rubber.
So, overall: a long, flat start, then a solid few days of building swell from the 27th through to the 31st, with Friday the 31st being the pick of the bunch. Get on it.
Rusty.
