The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Bossiney Haven has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you – it's a bit of a rough stretch for quality waves.

First up, the water temp is sittin' at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won't need the thickest rubber.

We start off with a real dud. From Sunday the 23rd right through until Thursday the 27th of August, we've got tiny, weak swell. We're talking 1ft from the west at best, with energy levels barely breaking 30 (combined energy of 27). The wind is all over the place – cross-shore, onshore – and the report just says "poor surf conditions." You'd be better off staying home for that first week. There's a solid gap of no real surf here.

Thursday the 27th afternoon gives us a glimmer. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the west-southwest at a 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to 153 and it goes clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. It's described as "surfable waves" but still "very ordinary conditions." It's something to wet a line, but not a standout.

Friday the 28th is a write-off with messy onshore chop.

Now, Saturday the 29th of August is where things get interesting, but it's for the right crew. We get a rise of 7ft of west swell with an 8-second period. That's a decent push, but the combined energy is pumping at 675. The problem? The wind is fresh from the west-southwest at 19 mph, cross-offshore but strong. It'll be clean, but that size and those winds will make it a grunty, lumpy affair. This is expert territory – too big for beginners, and the short period means it'll be a bit of a wall. It's a true stand-out for size, but only if you've got the balls and the skills.

Sunday the 30th is similar – big swell around 7ft but the wind swings west and picks up to 25 mph, making it a cross-shore mess by the afternoon.

After that, we drop right back down to tiny, weak stuff from Monday the 31st August through to Thursday the 3rd of September. Empty energy readings in the teens and twenties. One highlight on Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon: glassy conditions with a light breeze and 1ft swell. Paddling would be easy, but you're fighting for a knee-high ripple.

Then, on Friday the 4th of September, we see another pulse. The morning shows 8ft from the west at a 10-second period. The combined energy rockets to 1004 – that's proper juice. The wind is a light south-southwest cross-off at 9 mph. The report calls it "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions," but this is your best bet for a wave if the tide lines up. This is big, clean, and powerful. Still, over 8ft is expert-only, so keep that in mind.

Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of September keep the swell going at 6ft to 7ft, but the wind is stronger and fresh from the southwest, making it bumpy.

Finally, Monday the 7th of September is a monster. We're looking at 10ft of swell from the west with a 10-second period, building to a huge 18-second period groundswell in the afternoon. The combined energy hits 5172 in the pm – that's a serious, serious ocean. But with the wind screaming from the west at 28 to 31 mph, the report says "strong cross-shore with messy cross-chop" and a "near gale." This isn't a day for surfing; it's a day for watching from the cliffs. For most, this setup actually looks more interesting for kiting than for paddle surfing.

So, my honest take: If you're a beginner, stay away for the whole 16 days. The only real stand-out windows for experienced surfers are Saturday the 29th of August and Friday the 4th of September. The 4th looks like the best bet for quality, but be wary of the tide. Everything else is flat, messy, or just plain dangerous.

Rusty.
