The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim picture for the foreseeable future. The surf is tiny, the wind is all over the place, and the conditions are just plain ordinary. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing special, so don't be in a rush to grab your board.
Kicking things off, we’ve got Bossiney Haven. This spot is fairly consistent, but it’s a sheltered little nook, so it needs a proper swell from the west to get going. The water’s sitting at about 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a weird little anomaly.
We start with a couple of days of nothing. Then, on Friday the 23rd, the morning looks glassy as anything with the wind from the east, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0 ft. The wave energy is a weak 22. That’s not surf, that’s a lake. The afternoon isn’t any better with a tiny 0.7 ft swell. Through the 24th and 25th, the wind is howling from the southeast and east-southeast at 22 mph, which is a fresh breeze. The swell is still tiny, and the conditions are just a mess.
We get a glimmer on Tuesday the 26th with a bit of an offshore wind, but the swell is still only 3 ft with a short period of 9 seconds. The energy is moderate at 103, but it’s still ‘poor surf conditions’. The glassy morning on Thursday the 27th is a tease, but the swell is under 3 ft.
The first real sign of life is on Friday the 28th, with a west swell pushing 6 ft. The wave energy is moderate at 282. But the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. For a sheltered spot like Bossiney, that’s not going to do it any favours. A lot of energy, but the wind is just wrong.
The only time this place looks even remotely interesting is on Sunday the 30th. The morning has a clean offshore wind from the south at 16 mph, and the swell is a solid 5 ft from the west with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is strong at 323. It’s still being described as 'surfable waves but very ordinary conditions', and it’s only getting a 1 out of 10, but it’s the best we’ve got. The afternoon stays clean offshore, but the swell drops back to 4 ft. The crowds are possible here, so don’t expect a secret spot.
Then we’re back to the doldrums. The next week is a write-off. The swell is all over the place, but the wind is a constant problem – onshore or strong cross-shore. There’s a big pulse of energy on Wednesday the 2nd of September, with a west swell hitting 10 ft and an energy reading of 1700, but the wind is a cross-off at 19 mph. That much swell is only for experts, and with the wind direction, it’s going to be a messy, dangerous beast. Not a paddle-out for the average surfer.
The best bet for a proper surf is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only thing that lines up with a clean offshore wind and a decent-sized swell. For the rest of it, you’re better off going for a walk.
Rusty.
