Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us.
Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you – we’re looking at a very quiet, drawn-out stretch. There’s nothing on offer right now and for many days to come. The only spot on the radar is Bossiney Haven, but even that’s a tough sell. The first real sniff of anything surfable doesn’t appear until late in the run, and even then it’s not much. We’re talking a big gap of flatness and poor conditions stretching from now all the way through to around the 16th of July. That's over a week with nothing worthwhile.
Let’s break down what’s going on at Bossiney Haven (Cornwall). This is a sheltered, fairly consistent beginner-friendly beach. For the entire first week, the swell is tiny – we’re looking at 2 ft to 3 ft of west swell, with periods around 8 to 9 seconds. Combined energy is weak, mostly sitting between 30 and 121 (low to moderate). The outlook is persistently poor. Winds are a mixed bag, mostly cross or cross-onshore, sometimes clean but never really offering any punch.
There is a moment on Wednesday the 8th morning where it goes glassy (ENE 5 km/h), and the swell is a clean 2 ft from the west (9 seconds), but the wave height and energy (61) just aren’t there to recommend it. It’s a tease. This pattern of small, underpowered surf with mostly light to moderate winds continues right through until mid-July. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Now, here’s where it gets slightly more interesting, though still tricky. From around Thursday the 16th of July into the weekend, we see a spike in size. On the 16th, we get a 5 ft north-northwest swell, but with a short period of only 6 seconds. It’s also blowing onshore at 25 mph from the north. Combined energy hits 202 (moderate) on the Thursday morning, so there’s some push there. This is more of a choppy, lumpy affair. It’s mostly onshore and messy, so not for the faint-hearted. That kind of size and short period will be pretty unruly at a beach break, and honestly, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
The following days (17th to 20th of July) drop back down in size, with more cross-onshore winds and further drops in energy. The cleanest moment in the whole outlook is on Monday the 20th morning when a 30 mph southwest cross-offshore breeze cleans things up, but the swell is a tiny 1.0 ft (8 seconds, period from the west) and energy is a mere 15. That’s barely a ripple.
To sum it up: If you’re after a standout, there really isn’t one in this 16-day window. The most surf-worthy window, if you’re desperate, is the 16th and 17th of July, but only if you’re an expert and don’t mind strong, messy onshore wind. For everyone else, it’s a long, flat wait. This kind of blank run isn’t unusual for the area, so don’t lose hope – forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
