The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.

We’ve got Bossiney Haven on the menu for the next couple of weeks, and I’ll be honest with you – it’s a bit of a waiting game. The water is sitting at 66°F right now, which is a good 4°F warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s a treat to be in the water temp-wise, but the surf is going to keep you guessing.

The first solid stretch of waves we see comes from Wednesday the 19th through to Sunday the 23rd, but don’t get your hopes up too high. We’ve got a mix of onshore and cross-shore winds, mostly from the west and northwest, with swell heights bouncing between 1ft and 6ft. The problem is the wind. It’s fresh, it’s messy, and it’s killing any chance of clean waves. The energy readings are mostly weak to moderate, with values from 122 to 492, but with short period 6-9 second swell, it’s just not holding together. Conditions are described as “poor surf conditions” all the way through. There’s a brief moment on Friday morning (21st) with a light offshore wind from the NNE, but the swell is only 3ft and the period is 8 seconds – it’s barely a ripple. Not worth paddling out for.

Then from Monday the 24th through to the end of the month, it goes flat. We’re talking 0.7ft to 2ft waves with almost no energy (11 to 54). The wind is still messing about, mostly cross-shore or onshore. This is a genuine lull, and it’s not going to be fun for anyone.

Things start to look a little more interesting by Wednesday the 26th. We get a jump in swell to 6ft in the morning, coming from the west with a 7-second period, and the energy jumps to 377. Still cross-shore wind though, so it’s lumpy. By Thursday afternoon (27th), the wind backs off to a cross-offshore, and we get 4ft of west swell with a 10-second period and 302 energy. That’s the first time conditions are described as “clean.” It’s not big, but it’s rideable.

Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th keep the clean vibes going with offshore and cross-offshore winds, but the swell drops back to 3ft to 4ft. Saturday morning is the best of this short run – 4ft from the west, 7-second period, light offshore wind from the south at 15 mph, and 126 energy. It’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and honestly, that’s about as good as it gets for a while. The water is still warm, and the wind is clean, so if you’re desperate, that’s your window.

Then we hit another rough patch. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st bring back the cross-shore and cross-on winds, with Monday morning pumping out 7ft of west swell and a 10-second period, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph northwest cross-on. That’s a lot of energy (813) but it’s going to be a mess. This is more kite-surfing territory than clean surf.

The real standout comes much later – Wednesday, September 2nd morning. We get 6ft of west swell, 8-second period, 491 energy, and a gentle offshore wind from the south at 9 mph. The guidance says “expect good surf conditions,” and that’s the first time we’ve seen that in the whole forecast. It’s a long way out, so don’t lock it in, but it’s the best bet on the board. Bossiney Haven is a sheltered spot that needs a west swell and offshore south wind, and this lines up. The waves will be clean, chest to head high, and the sets will be consistent. If you can wait, that’s the one.

After that, it fades back to small and messy through the rest of the first week of September.

So, to sum it up: most of the next 16 days are a write-off. The only real standout is Wednesday, September 2nd morning. If you’re flexible, aim for that. Otherwise, maybe dust off the kite or take a break.

Rusty.
