The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you – the first week and a half is a write-off. From Tuesday the 14th right through to the morning of Thursday the 23rd, there’s pretty much nothing worth paddling out for. We’re talking tiny, weak waves, a lot of onshore or cross-off winds that just mess up the face, and generally poor conditions. You’d be better off waxing your board at home than getting wet. There’s a gap of about ten days where I wouldn’t bother.
But then, things start to look up. The first real glimmer comes on the morning of Thursday the 24th of July at Godrevy. It’s a glassy morning, which is a huge plus – the wind is glassy from the WSW, at just 3 mph. That’s going to put a mirror finish on the surface. We’ll see a 4 ft swell from the WNW, with a long period of 12 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is moderate (369). The water is a touch warmer than normal at 64°F, which is about 3°F warmer than average for this time of year. It’s a standout for cleanliness, but it’s not huge. This is a beginner-friendly spot, and with that glassy stuff, it’ll be a nice, cruisy session if you can get out there.
The real standout, the one worth circling on your calendar, is the morning of Sunday the 27th of July. Godrevy is looking like it’s going to fire. We’ve got a 8 ft swell from the west, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is strong (847). That’s a solid, pushy swell. The wind is light and cross-off from the ENE at 6 mph, which will keep the waves clean. This is a proper session for experienced surfers – 8 ft is getting too big for beginners, but for the rest of us, it’s a lot of fun. The afternoon stays solid at 7 ft, but the wind goes cross-shore, so the morning is the pick. The water is still that touch warmer than normal.
The Sunday the 26th of July morning is also a good call, with a 6 ft swell from the west and clean offshore winds from the SE at 6 mph. It’s a bit smaller than Sunday the 27th, but still a quality wave with moderate energy (381). It’s a great warm-up for the Monday.
Crowds at Godrevy can be an issue, so get there early for the best of it. The long-period swell on the 24th and the medium period on the 27th will be best handled by this exposed, open beach.
So, in short: a long wait, then a glassy morning on the 24th, and a proper, meaty session on the 27th.
Rusty.
