The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s get real. I’ve been staring at the charts for Godrevy and I gotta be straight with you: it’s a tough run ahead. The whole 16-day window looks pretty grim for a decent paddle. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing special, with the wind and swell just not lining up for any kind of quality session.
The first real chance of any surf kicks off on Thursday, July 16th, but it’s a sad one. We’re talking tiny 1.0ft of weak, 8-second wind swell from the west. The combined energy is a measly 22 points, and that NE cross-shore is going to chop it right up. It’s a flat, blown-out mess. This kind of energy is often better suited for a kite than a board.
We go through the next week or so with the same story: tiny swell, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is nearly always onshore or cross-onshore. Saturday the 18th sees a bit more size, up to 3ft, but it’s short-period, choppy, and messy. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is about a degree warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze waiting for a wave that doesn’t come.
There’s a glimmer of hope on Tuesday the 21st morning. The wind swings around to the east, going cross-offshore and clean. The swell is tiny at 1ft, but it’s coming from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the energy is at 54 points. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s the cleanest window we’ve got in the first week.
The real action, if you can call it that, doesn’t try to show up until Saturday the 25th. The swell finally pushes up to 4ft to 4ft from the WNW, and the combined energy hits 137 to 158 points – that’s moderate wave energy. But the problem is the wind. It’s a moderate onshore breeze from the NW both morning and afternoon. That’s going to make it bumpy and poor quality. Sure, it’s bigger, but it’s not surfable in a good way.
Sunday the 26th is a bit of a tease. The swell stays around 4ft to 4ft, and the energy is still solid, but it’s a cross-onshore wind from the W, keeping it choppy. The setup is a bit more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, to be honest.
The last real contender is Thursday the 30th. The afternoon picks up a 5ft swell from the SW, and the energy jumps to 292 points. That’s the biggest energy we see. But the wind is a fresh onshore from the N at 22 mph, creating a lumpy, onshore mess. The morning sees a 5ft swell from the SW, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the NE.
So, what’s the best? Honestly, there’s no standout. If you’re desperate, the cleanest moment is the Tuesday morning of the 21st, but it’s tiny. For raw power, the Saturday the 25th has the size, but it’s blown out. It’s a poor outlook, folks. Hopefully the long-range forecasts change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
