The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a long, hard look at what’s on the menu for Godrevy over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a tough one. The forecast is a real mixed bag, and we’re staring down a long, frustrating stretch where the conditions just won’t line up for a proper session.
The only real glimmer of hope in this whole 16-day window is the very start. We’re looking at Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. Godrevy will be small, with a weak 1 ft swell from the SW, but the water temp is a lovely 63°F, which is about normal for this time of year. The real winner here is the wind: a gentle 9 mph breeze from the ENE, keeping it clean. The wave energy is weak (81), so don’t expect much push, but for a beginner, this is about as good as it gets. It’s a quiet, glassy little window. The swell period is a long 14 seconds, which means those sets will be well-spaced and the shape will be there for the longboard.
After that, it’s a write-off. From Sunday afternoon right through to the end of the month, we’re dealing with a mix of onshore winds, sloppy conditions, and flat spells. Monday the 24th has strong 25 mph winds, and the swell is barely a ripple. Tuesday the 25th stays messy. Wednesday the 26th is a no-go.
Then, on Thursday the 27th, the swell jumps up to 6 ft from the SSW with moderate energy (433), but the wind is a cross-shore mess, and the period is a short, choppy 8 seconds. It’s not a surfer’s wave. Friday the 28th is equally poor.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th gets a bit bigger. Saturday the 29th sees 8 ft of WNW swell, with strong energy (735), but it’s being hammered by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. That’s lumpy, blown-out, and frankly, for experts only – and even then, it’s not nice. Sunday the 30th afternoon has a 7 ft SW swell, but again, the wind is a problem.
The first week of September offers no relief. The winds stay onshore or cross-shore, the swell is either too small or too messy, and the energy is weak. By the 4th of September, we’ve got strong 25 mph winds making a total mess of things. Even the 6th and 7th, with some cleaner wind, the swell is still poor quality.
Honestly, this is a difficult forecast. For a break like Godrevy, which is fairly consistent, a blank run like this is unusual but not unheard of. The only true standout is that Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. If you’re a beginner, that’s your window. For everyone else, pack the kiteboard, because the rest of this period looks more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
