The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's look at the next couple of weeks for the Godrevy stretch. It’s a bit of a rough start, so don’t get too excited just yet, but there are some serious waves brewing on the horizon if you're willing to wait it out.
The opening days are a write-off, to be honest. We’ve got a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind kicking up a messy, choppy ocean, and not much size to show for it. Tuesday and Wednesday are both poor, with the swell energy weak, particularly on Tuesday when we’re looking at a combined energy of just 188. That’s pretty gutless. It might look inviting from the beach, but it's not going to be any fun out there.
We finally get a break in the weather on Saturday the 22nd. The wind will be light and there’s a chance of a clean wave. The swell is tiny, only 2ft with a 10-second period, and the energy is barely registering at 70. It’s surfable, but you’ll be hunting for a wave that has any push. This is a bring-a-foamie kind of day, not one for the quiver. After that, the ocean just dies. The swell drops right out, and we’ve got a long stretch of nothing over the weekend into Monday. There’s a bit of glass on Monday morning, but the swell is only 0.7ft. It’s flat, plain and simple.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. About a week out, on Tuesday the 25th, the wind swings offshore – a fresh SSE breeze – and we get some life back in the water. The morning shows 5ft of west swell with a combined energy of 394. It’s described as marginal, but that offshore wind is a game-changer. The afternoon bumps up to 5ft, and that could be one of the better sessions of this whole window if the wind holds. It's a small window, but it's clean.
The next few days after that are a bit messy with cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions again, before things start to progress towards a big finale.
The real standout, and I mean the one to keep your eye on, is Monday the 31st. We’ve got a building swell, and the afternoon sees a solid 10ft of SW groundswell rolling in. The energy is huge – reading 1020. Now, the forecast says it's predicted to be too big for this break, but for the experienced crew, that’s a proper session. It’s clean, tide and wind are favorable, and it’s just going to be a raw show of power. The energy is strong, but at 10ft, it’s expert-only territory. Beginners should stay well clear.
Then, the following day, Tuesday the 1st of September, is the best on offer. The swell holds at a solid 10ft in the morning with even more energy – 1555 – and it’s already too big for most. But then the wind swings offshore again, a moderate SSE, and the afternoon has 8ft of clean, powerful W groundswell with an energy reading of 1202. That’s the sweet spot. The conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers, and with that offshore wind, it’s going to be a day for the books. This is the one to plan for. It’s a week and a half away, so treat it as a promising forecast, not a guarantee, but it has all the makings of a serious session.
A couple of notes: the water temp is running pretty average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there. And for the bigger days, especially that 10ft+, the rights and lefts at Godrevy will be a proper paddle battle. It’s not a beginner’s wave when it’s that size.
So, to sum it up: the next week is mostly a bust with a slight glimmer this Saturday and a proper offshore day next Tuesday. But if you’re an expert, circle the 31st of August and the 1st of September on your calendar. The latter looks like the true standout.
Rusty out.
