The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local break, Godrevy.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. The surf is small, the wind is mostly howling from the wrong direction, and the water's going to be a mess. Seriously, from now until at least the end of July, the conditions are just poor. We're talking weak, short-period windswell from the north, with cross-onshore winds keeping things choppy and lumpy. The combined energy is barely a whisper, mostly under 100, so there's just no power in the water. You'd be better off staying home and waxing your board.
There’s a bit of a wait for anything decent. The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Thursday, July 30th. The wind swings around to a cross-offshore from the SSW, cleaning things right up. The swell from the WNW builds to a solid 7ft, with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to a much more interesting 464. This is a proper swell. The morning session is looking clean, but it's a substantial swell – over 5ft – so it's going to be a bit too much for the beginners. The afternoon holds similar size (6ft) with even more energy (868) and clean conditions. That's the standout window, right there. Keep in mind the water temp is about 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Now, after that, the wind turns nasty again from the NE on the 31st, and the swell drops, so get your fill on that Thursday. The first few days of August look like they'll clean up again with some cross-offshore wind, but the swell fades away quickly to just 2ft and 1ft. Not much to write home about, but at least it'll be clean if you're desperate.
The Bottom Line: The only real standout is the 30th of July. That's your day. Thursday morning and afternoon, Godrevy will have clean, punchy waves from the WNW. It's going to be a bit of a beast for the beginners, but for the rest of you, that's the session to circle on the calendar. Everything else is a write-off.
Rusty.
