The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this over with. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Godrevy, and it’s a rough run. Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a write-off for a proper surf.
The first day we can even talk about is Monday, July 13th, but it's not good. We’ve got a weak, short-period 3ft NNE windswell, but it’s getting hammered by a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is a measly (111), so it’s weak. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 64°F, but that doesn’t help the waves. The rest of that week into the weekend is a flat spell. You’re looking at tiny, messy waves under 2ft and onshore or cross-off winds. There’s a gap of several days with nothing worth paddling out for.
The real action, if you can call it that, shows up on Saturday, July 25th. The swell finally bumps up, but the wind is a mess. Saturday afternoon sees a 5ft W swell, with a moderate 11-second period, and the energy jumps to (637) – moderate to strong. But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore 16 mph from the W, so it’s going to be choppy and blown out. The swell is too big for a beginner at this size, and with the wind, it’s not fun for anyone.
Sunday, July 26th, is slightly better. The swell drops to a 5ft from the W, period 10 seconds, and energy is still strong (354). The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the SW, which is much better. It will be clean-ish, with a gentle cross-chop. This is the best the window has to offer, but it’s still not a standout. The break is exposed and fairly consistent, but it’s a beach setup, and with this size, it’s going to be a bit of a close-out mess. The crowd factor is ‘often’, so expect company.
Honestly, the whole 16-day outlook is grim. The best we get is a mushy, semi-clean 5ft day on the 26th. For the rest of the time, the wind is wrong, or the swell is tiny. If you’re a kite surfer, the windier, choppier days on the 25th might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a tough stretch. The lack of consistent surf is pretty normal for this area when the wind sets in from the wrong direction.
Rusty.
