The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Godrevy.
Straight up, we’ve got a long spell of quiet, messy conditions. It’s not looking good for a paddle for quite a while. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t roll in until Sunday the 26th of July, and even then it’s going to be a rough one. Before that, from now through Saturday the 25th, we’re looking at tiny swell and poor surf. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 64°F, but that’s about the only nice thing I can say.
The first sign of life shows up on Sunday the 26th. Swell builds to 6ft from the West, with 6 seconds of period. The combined energy jumps to 228 (moderate), but it’s coming straight onshore with a strong NW wind at 15-19 mph. It’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. That afternoon, energy hits 360 (strong) but the wind is still howling. This is not a paddle session; if you’ve got a kite, this might be your window.
Monday the 27th keeps the energy up with 6ft-7ft from the WNW and a period of 7 seconds, combined energy hitting 404 (strong). But again, a fresh cross-onshore wind from the NNW at 19 mph. It’s lumpy and choppy. This is still expert-only territory if you’re brave enough, but honestly, the quality is poor.
Tuesday the 28th sees the swell drop a bit to 4ft in the morning, still from the WNW, with a better period of 7 seconds and energy at 257 (moderate). The wind is still a moderate cross-onshore from the North at 16 mph. The afternoon gets a little cleaner with a 9-second period, but the chop is still there.
By Wednesday the 29th, the swell fades to 3ft (WNW, 10s period, 179 energy) and the wind is still a nuisance. There’s a small window Thursday morning the 30th but the swell is tiny at 2ft. The rest of the run into August is mostly small, onshore, and not worth getting excited about.
If I had to pick one standout, it’s the afternoon of Tuesday the 28th. The swell is 4ft from the WNW with a longer 9-second period (238 energy, moderate). It’s still cross-onshore, but it’s the cleanest of a rough bunch. Even then, don’t expect perfection. The direction is a good match for the break, but the wind is the story.
All in all, it’s a tough forecast. Keep the board in the car and your eyes on the sky.
Rusty.
