The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Godrevy’s got brewin’, in good old feet and miles per hour.
It’s a tough start, mates. The first week or so is a total bust. Don’t bother waxin’ up. Swell’s tiny, and the wind’s a constant pain in the neck. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are both messy: WNW swell around 3ft, with a short period of 6 seconds, and a moderate onshore breeze lockin’ in poor conditions. It’s choppy and weak, energy readings are well under 200 (119 to 166), so there’s no grunt to speak of.
Wednesday the 19th through the end of that week doesn’t get any better. Swell builds a bit – Wednesday afternoon hits 6ft and Thursday morning gets to 7ft – but that Westerly and WNW wind stays cross-on and fresh, tearin’ up the surface. Thursday’s got more energy (540 to 696), but it’s all for nothing with that wind. Even Friday the 21st – the only day with a score above zero – is just a marginal call. That morning sees a light NE breeze and a 3ft, 8-second W swell, but it ain’t enough to get excited about.
After that, it flatlines. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, we’re talkin’ tiny, weak swells, mostly under 1ft with long periods of 13-14 seconds that just don’t have any power. Combined energy drops to two-digit numbers like 71, 33, or even 29. It’s rare to see a spot like Godrevy go this quiet for this long. A blank run like this is pretty normal for this area when the wind just won’t play ball, so don’t lose all hope.
Then we get a flicker of somethin’ promising way out in the calendar. On Monday the 31st of August, things start to look interesting. We’ve got a solid 8ft to 8ft swell from the WNW, with a very long period of 14-15 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy hits 3156 and then 2506 – that’s strong wave energy. But here’s the kicker: the wind on Monday morning is a moderate cross-shore, and by Monday afternoon it goes cross-offshore from the South at 22 mph. That cleans it right up. This is the standout window. Godrevy is exposed to the WNW, and this is the optimum direction. The waves will have real shape and power, but with that long period, expect long lulls between sets. It’s not for beginners – that size is expert territory, especially with that period.
Tuesday the 1st of September sees the swell drop back to a weaker, wind-affected 4ft, so that Monday window is your only real shot.
So, to wrap it up: a long, frustrating gap of over a week with no surf worth paddlin’ for. Then one genuine standout – Monday the 31st of August. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. Big, clean, powerful WNW swell, cross-offshore wind, and that Godrevy bank could really show its teeth. Be ready for the long waiting game between sets. Keep an eye on the forecast, but for now, that’s the only light in the tunnel.
Rusty.
