The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. I’ve scanned the charts and honestly, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and there’s not a single standout session to get excited about. We’ve got a real gap here – from now all the way through to the end of the first week of August, it’s just one no-go after another.
The only spot that even gets a mention is Godrevy. It’s a beginner-friendly, exposed beach break, and it’s usually fairly consistent, but this forecast has it flatlining. Let’s start with the first recommendation, which is really just a flicker of hope.
On Tuesday, July 21st, the morning actually goes glassy. That’s a rare treat. The wind is from the NE at a mere 3 mph, so the surface will be clean. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the north, with a weak period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 74 – that’s weak, barely any push. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a degree or so warmer than normal for the time of year, so it’s a bit mild. But don’t kid yourself, the waves are “surfable but very ordinary.” It’s small, weak, and short-period. It’s not a recommendation, it’s just the least bad option.
After that, it’s back to the bins. The wind swings onshore and picks up, and the swell stays knee-high or below. The week of the 22nd through the 28th is a total write-off – moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds, choppy and lumpy conditions. The swell is barely registering, and the combined energy is mostly in the double digits, well under 100. It’s all poor surf.
By the time we get to the 29th and 30th of July, the wind is howling – near gale force from the WNW at 31 mph. The swell does bump up a bit, with combined energy hitting 135, but it’s blown out and messy. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine.
The rest of the run into the first of August is the same story: tiny swell, persistent onshore wind. There’s no surf to be had. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a real dry spell. But don’t lose hope – forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long. For now, leave the boards in the car and maybe take a walk on the beach.
Rusty.
