The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Locquirec over the next couple of weeks.
Well, to be honest, the first week or so is looking pretty grim. There’s hardly any surf to speak of until we get into the last week of July. From Wednesday 15 July right through to Tuesday 28 July, it’s a real struggle – wave heights are sitting around 0.7 ft to 2 ft, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the conditions are just poor. You’ll be scratching your head wondering where the ocean went. The combined swell energy is weak, mostly under 100 (a measly 28 to 88), so there’s just no push. There’s a brief moment on Saturday 18 July morning where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 1 ft and from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds – that’s tiny, not enough to get excited about. You’d be lucky to get a knee-high crumble.
The real action, if you can call it that, starts to build around Wednesday 29 July. On Wednesday 29 July morning, the wind turns glassy again, the swell is 3 ft from the WNW, but the period drops to 6 seconds – short period junk. The combined energy is 101 (moderate) but the waves are described as “surfable but very ordinary”. It’s not pretty, but it’s the first time we can actually paddle out.
The standout window looks like Thursday 30 July morning. The wind shifts to a light cross-offshore from the WNW at 3 mph, the swell is 3 ft from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is 120 (moderate). The wave comment calls it “clean”. That’s your best bet in the whole 16-day window – small, clean, and workable for a beginner (which is the difficulty rating anyway). The west-northwest swell direction is a good match for the optimum west swell direction for Locquirec.
After that, Thursday 30 July afternoon sees the swell jump to 4 ft from the WNW, combined energy at 224 (moderate-strong), but the wind turns cross-onshore and the conditions get messy again. Still, for a bigger wave, you might score a few if you’re keen.
Because this spot is a beach break exposed to the west, the longer period swells (10–11 seconds) will give a bit more shape, but the energy is still moderate. Water temperature is about 64°F on the 15th, which is around 2°F warmer than average for this time of year – nothing crazy, but definitely a touch warmer than usual.
Locquirec is a fairly consistent spot, but this run is a real dry spell. Don’t hold your breath for the first week. The best chance is Thursday 30 July morning – keep an eye on it, but don’t expect a classic.
Rusty.
