The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a bit of a slow start, but there are a couple windows that are gonna be worth your time. We’re looking at a period that kicks off pretty flat and messy, but things will start to wake up as we get into the end of the month. The main event looks like it’s gonna be next week, with a serious pulse of swell and some clean conditions. Let’s break it down.
The first week is gonna be a grind. From the 21st through the 24th, there’s just nothing doing. The swell is tiny, under 3 feet, and the wind is all over the place, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and it’s gonna be choppy. The energy levels are weak, down in the 10-70 (10 to 77) range for most of it. This is a classic case of the ocean just needing a few days to sort itself out. You’re better off doing a few maintenance laps in the pool or getting your gear ready.
We start to see a few glimmers of hope from the 25th. The swell is still small, but the wind is starting to ease off. Tuesday the 25th afternoon has the wind going glassy with a little 1.3ft of WNW swell. It’s not big, but it’s clean. The energy is still weak at 43 (43). It’s not worth paddling out for, but it’s a sign that things are changing.
From the 26th to the 28th, we get a bit more size, but it’s still all over the place. The mornings are small and clean-ish, but nothing with any push. The energy levels start to climb a bit, going from the mid-50s up to over 200 (232) on the 27th afternoon. Still, the comments are all saying poor surf. It’s the ocean flexing a little, but without any real direction.
Now, here’s where we need to pay attention. Friday the 28th is the big one. The forecast is calling for a serious jump in swell. We’re looking at a 9.8ft pulse of WNW swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy is absolutely cranking at 1494 (1494). That’s a strong signal. But, and this is a big but, the comment says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. It’s clean with the wind, but this is just gonna be a washing machine. This is a spot that handles a bit of size, but 9.8 feet is pushing it into dangerous territory. This is for experts only, and honestly, with it being too big, it’s probably not even that. It’s a day to sit on the cliffs and watch the ocean roar, not to be in it.
After that monster, things settle down a bit for the weekend. The 29th still has some size, around 3.3ft to 5.2ft, and the wind starts going offshore. The energy is moderate, around 229 (229) to 318 (318). The Sunday 30th looks better, with clean offshore winds all day and 4.3ft to 5.2ft of swell out of the W. The energy is still up there at 358 (358) in the afternoon. This is shaping up to be the first proper surfable day. It’s still not huge, but it’s clean and has some push.
Then we get into the real standout of the whole period. Monday the 31st looks like the pick of the bunch. We’ve got 5.2ft of WNW swell, the wind is light, and the energy is strong at 371 (371) in the morning and 380 (380) in the afternoon. The conditions are clean, with a light cross-offshore breeze. This is a solid, surfable day for a wide range of skill levels. It’s the day you’ve been waiting for.
Tuesday the 1st of September still has some decent energy at 321 (321), with solid 4.9ft swell and fresh offshore winds, but it’s flagged as marginal for tide or some other condition. After that, the swell starts to back off again. We drop down to under 3 feet from the 2nd through the 5th. The energy levels fade away too, back down into double digits and low hundreds.
The only other flicker of life is on Thursday the 3rd, when we see another 6.9ft of swell, but the period drops to 7 seconds and it’s crossed up. That’s just a messy, lumpy day. Then on Friday the 4th, we see 4.9ft in the morning with glassy conditions and moderate energy at 326 (326), but the afternoon gets crossed up again. It’s surfable, but not the same quality as that Monday.
So, for the last few days of the first week, and into the second week, the shoulder days will be okay, but nothing special.
In terms of the water temp here at Locquirec, it’s sitting at 66°F, and the anomaly says it’s running about 1.8°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a noticeable bump, so it'll feel a little more pleasant than
