The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
We’re in for a dry spell, I’m not gonna lie. The start of this forecast is pretty grim for a paddle. The first solid action we see is a week away, on the morning of Saturday the 26th of July. Before that, we’ve got a long stretch of nothing worth mentioning – tiny, weak swell and onshore winds, just a whole lot of flat and choppy water. You’d be better off cleaning the wax off your board than checking the cams.
The first real pulse arrives on the 26th. We’re looking at a 6ft swell from the west-northwest, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is there, hitting 382 (moderate), and the wind is off from the southwest, which is a clean breeze. That’s our best bet for the whole run. The break is Locquirec, and it’s an exposed, fairly consistent beginner spot. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. This swell is a touch over the 5ft mark, so it might be a bit much for absolute beginners, but for anyone with a few sessions under their belt, it’s the best window we’ve got. The swell direction is WNW, which is a good match for the break’s optimum from the west.
Later that same day, the swell drops a little to 6ft, but the wind goes cross-off with rain showers, so it’s still rideable, just not as clean. The next morning, Monday the 27th, we see a 4ft west-northwest swell with cross-off winds and a combined energy of 249 (moderate). It’s clean, but the waves are a bit smaller and the quality is still just marginal.
Then, look at the 30th of July – Thursday morning. The sea goes glassy. A 5ft west-northwest swell with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 315 (strong). That’s a good one. The wind is glass, 5 mph from the west. That’s a proper dawny if you can get out there. The swell is manageable, and the conditions will be pristine. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-on, so the morning is the window.
Beyond that, the forecast gets messy again with onshore winds and choppy conditions. The 31st of July and into August just looks like a write-off with strong onshore winds.
So, to cut it short: the standout is the morning of Saturday the 26th of July at Locquirec. It’s the biggest push of clean swell we’re going to see. The glassy morning of Thursday the 30th is your second window, but it’s a smaller swell. Get out there while you can.
Rusty.
