The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a real mixed bag coming up for Locquirec. The next week and a half is a bit of a write-off for decent surf, but there’s a couple of windows that look serious if you’re patient.
The first real chance of anything worthwhile won’t come until the 25th. Before that, it’s mostly small, weak, and windy. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 66°, which is nice for the skin when you’re sitting out there waiting for nothing much to happen.
Tuesday, the 18th to Thursday, the 22nd: Basically a flat spell. We’ve got small swell, mostly under 3 ft, with weak energy (68 to 86 range). The wind is all over the place but mostly cross-off or onshore, and the wave comment says it all: poor surf. On the 20th, swell bumps up to 6 ft from the WNW, with moderate energy (524 to 586) and a 9-second period, but the wind is howling at 16 mph and it’s still only marginal. Not worth paddling out for.
Friday, the 23rd to Monday, the 24th: The surf drops right off. Swell heights are tiny (0.7 ft to 2 ft), with energy levels between 10 and 89. Wind is onshore and strong from the NE. This is a complete lull. Nothing doing.
Tuesday, the 25th: Now we’re talking. Finally. The morning sees a clean 6 ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period. The energy is solid at 506, and the wind is a light cross-off from the SSW. The wave comment is “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the day to get in the water. The afternoon cleans up even more with a 5 ft swell from the W, 9-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the SW (12 mph). Less energy at 359, but glassy and clean. This is the best on offer in the near term – a punchy, fun-sized swell with good wind.
Wednesday, the 26th to Thursday, the 27th: The 26th drops right back to junk (2 ft to 3 ft, weak energy). But hold on. Thursday, the 27th is the standout. The morning is glassy with a 7 ft swell from the WNW, a 9-second period, and very strong energy at 708. The wave comment is “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a solid groundswell with a long period, and it’s going to be a bit heavy for the average punter – over 8 ft is expert territory. This is a real highlight, but it’s a week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts. The afternoon holds at 7 ft with clean cross-off wind.
Friday, the 28th to Sunday, the 30th: The swell drops again. The 28th has 4 ft to 3 ft swell but with a fresh breeze (19 mph) ruining it. The 29th is tiny (2 ft) and clean but weak. The 30th is glassy but flat (2 ft). Nothing to write home about.
Monday, the 31st to Wednesday, the 2nd of September: The final stretch. Small swell (2 ft to 3 ft) with weak energy. The 31st afternoon has a clean cross-off and a 3 ft WNW swell at 90 energy – surfable but ordinary. The 2nd of September has a 3 ft swell from the W with 124 energy, but again, it’s just ordinary. Not a standout.
The verdict: If you can wait, Thursday the 27th, with its glassy 7 ft WNW swell, is the best-looking day. The 25th is a solid early fall option with clean, fun waves. The rest? Get the kite out or take a long walk on the beach. This is a patient man’s forecast.
Rusty.
