Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us at Locquirec. I'll be straight with you – it's a pretty grim run for the most part. We've got a solid block of poor conditions stretching from now all the way through to the end of the first week and beyond. There's nothing really worth paddling out for until we get into the second week.
We start off on Monday the 6th of July with a tiny bit of hope that just doesn't deliver. Monday morning sees a tiny 3ft swell from the WNW, but the combined energy is weak (106), and it's got a period of 9 seconds – nothing special. The water is 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The real killer is that Monday morning is glassy – dead calm, which would be a dream, but the surf is just too ordinary to bother with. By the afternoon it's already gone to a cross-onshore mess with poor surf.
From there, it's a wasteland. Tuesday the 7th, Wednesday the 8th, Thursday the 9th, Friday the 10th, Saturday the 11th – all poor. The swell is tiny, the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, and the combined energy barely breaks into triple digits. There's a bit of a spike on the 11th with a 3ft swell, 10-second period, and moderate cross-shore wind, but the conditions are still rated as poor. Sunday the 12th is a write-off with strong onshore winds.
Then comes a real blank stretch. From Monday the 13th through to Friday the 17th, it's virtually flat. Swells drop to 0.7ft or 1ft, wind is howling onshore at 15-22 mph, and the combined energy is down in the teens or single digits. Nothing to see here.
Things start to get a little more interesting right at the end of the forecast period, but hold your horses. On Saturday the 18th of July, we see a building swell – 5ft in the morning, rising to 5ft in the afternoon from the WNW, with a short, weak period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 192 and then 236 – moderate energy now. But it's all blown out. Morning brings a moderate cross-onshore wind, and the afternoon is a fresh cross-shore. It's going to be lumpy, choppy, and a mess. This is the kind of setup that looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Sunday the 19th is the one day that might get your heart beating. We've got a proper swell: 7ft in the morning and 7ft in the afternoon from the WNW, still with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy hits a strong 572 in the morning and 502 in the afternoon – that's serious power. But again, the wind is the enemy. Morning is a moderate cross-onshore, making for choppy conditions. The afternoon is a moderate cross-shore with cross-chop. It's rated as marginal at best. That 7ft swell is getting into the "too big for beginners" zone, and with that short period and onshore influence, it's really only for experienced locals who know the bank. The weak period means the waves will be soft and fat, not proper groundswell. Not really a standout.
After that, Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st drop back to around 4-5ft with cross-shore winds and marginal conditions. It'll be a frustrating end to the run.
So, what's the call? If you're desperate, Sunday the 19th offers the most power, but don't expect clean lines. The glass-off on Monday the 6th morning was our best shot, but the swell was too small. There are no true standouts here. It's a tough run for Locquirec, and it doesn't look like it'll get much better soon. Keep an eye on it, but for now, keep your board in the car and wait for a proper clean swell.
Stay salty,
Rusty
