The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf for Locquirec.
First, the water’s sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – not a big deal, but it’s a little more comfortable than usual.
The next week and a half is a slow burner. There’s a few small pulses, but nothing really gets going until the very end of August and into early September. You’ll see a big gap of flat to weak, messy conditions from Wednesday afternoon through to the following Tuesday morning, with only a couple of brief windows that might be worth a paddle. The standout actually comes right at the end of the run.
Let’s start with Wednesday morning the 19th. It’s small, with 5ft swell from the WNW, period a short 7 seconds, and combined energy is weak at 214. The wind is a moderate cross-off from the NW at 16 mph, so it’s clean but the size and period don’t give you much to work with. It’s marginal at best.
Thursday the 20th sees a bump in size: 7ft on the morning, 6ft in the afternoon, both from the WNW with a 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to moderate – 589 and 627. But the wind is a fresh cross-off, 16–19 mph, which keeps it clean but a bit lumpy. Still marginal.
Friday morning the 21st is the first real glimmer. Swell drops to 5ft, still WNW, 9 seconds, and combined energy is 370 – moderate. Wind is a light breeze from the NW at 6 mph, cross-off, so it’s clean and glassy. This is the best window in the early part of the forecast. The afternoon turns onshore and choppy though, so get out early.
From there, it goes quiet. Saturday the 22nd through Tuesday the 27th morning is mostly flat to weak, with poor conditions and onshore winds. A few small pulses appear but nothing rideable. The gap is about five days of very little action.
Wednesday the 26th afternoon shows a little life: 5ft swell from the WNW, 8 seconds, combined energy 256 – moderate. Wind is a gentle cross-off from the W at 9 mph, so it’s clean. That’s a decent session for the patient surfer.
Now, the real standout is Monday the 31st of August morning. Swell is a solid 10ft from the WNW, period 10 seconds, and combined energy is a massive 1652 – very strong. Wind is a fresh cross-off from the W at 19 mph, so it’s clean. But here’s the catch: that’s too big for this break. It’s strictly for experienced surfers only, and even then, it’ll be a handful. The afternoon drops to 8ft, still big, but still a heavy session.
Tuesday the 1st of September holds at 7–7ft, WNW, 8–9 seconds, combined energy around 660–694, moderate to strong. Wind is moderate cross-off. Still big but more manageable.
The best of the whole run? Wednesday the 2nd of September morning. Swell is 7ft from the WNW, 9 seconds, combined energy 759 – strong. Wind is a moderate offshore from the SW at 12 mph, so it’s clean and groomed. That’s a proper session. The afternoon turns onshore and messy again.
So, if you’re looking for the pick, it’s Friday morning the 21st for a clean, smaller session, or Wednesday morning the 2nd of September for the best combo of size and quality. The 31st is for the brave only.
Rusty.
