The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next week and a half is a write-off. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing but tiny, weak swells. From Friday the 17th right through to the afternoon of Saturday the 26th, it’s a real struggle. We’re talking ankle-biters, mostly around 0.7ft to 1ft, with the occasional 2ft popping up on the 25th. The energy is pathetic, with readings barely cracking double digits. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a weak 15 at best, often just a measly 7 to 36. The wind is messy, mostly cross-off or offshore, but with that tiny swell, it’s just not enough. You’d be better off taking the dog for a walk.
Then, things start to get interesting. On Sunday the 26th, we see a pulse of new swell building, but it’s not clean. The morning brings a 4ft cross-onshore wind from the West, making it choppy, and the combined energy jumps to 128 (moderate). The afternoon is a bit bigger at 4ft, but still choppy.
The real event, however, is shaping up for the end of the month. Monday the 28th sees the swell really start to pump, but the wind is all wrong. Tuesday the 28th afternoon is where the energy goes nuts – a 6ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1184. But the cross-onshore wind from the WNW will be making it a choppy mess.
Now, for the real show. Wednesday the 29th is the standout, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The afternoon sees a solid 10ft swell from the WNW, with a combined energy of 1628. The wind is a cross-shore from the WNW, which is alright, but the size is a problem. This is only for experts. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 66°F.
Thursday the 30th is even bigger. The morning brings a massive 15ft WNW swell, with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy is a colossal 5157. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the NW, so it might be clean, but again, this is gigantic. Too big for beginners, and honestly, for most intermediates. Swells this powerful and long-period (12 seconds) will be dumping heavy; Le Petit Minou is a beach and point, so that point might offer some shelter, but the beach will be a washing machine.
Friday the 31st is the best chance for a decent session. The morning offers a 8ft WNW swell, with a combined energy of 2514. The wind is clean offshore from the NE, with a light breeze. This is described as excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The swell period is 10 seconds, a solid groundswell, and the offshore wind will groom it nicely. The afternoon drops to 7ft, but the wind goes cross-off, so the morning is your window.
To boil it down: The standout is the morning of Friday the 31st. It’s a promising, powerful swell with clean offshore winds and a solid 8ft. For the big-wave hunters, the afternoon of Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are the true monsters, but you’ll need a big gun and some serious nerve. The rest of the period is a snooze, so pick your moments carefully.
Rusty.
