The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. It’s a flat and messy start to the outlook for Le Petit Minou, a beach and point setup that’s exposed to SW groundswell. The water temp is bang on average for this time of year at 66°, so nothing weird there.
We kick off with nothing worth paddling out for on Tuesday the 18th—tiny 3ft waves from the WNW with a weak 6-second period, cross-onshore wind, and combined swell energy of just 62. That’s about as inviting as a cold shower. Wednesday the 19th though, we finally get a window. The morning is the pick of this whole first week: a clean 4ft WNW swell with 10 seconds of period, offshore NNE wind at 12 mph, and solid moderate energy of 308. This is the standout—clean faces, good shape, and that offshore breeze will have the lineup looking tidy. It’s a fairly consistent break and crowds are often, so expect some company. The afternoon goes cross-shore and choppy with 5ft, so the clean window is narrow.
Thursday the 20th gets messy again—7ft of cross-onshore WNW windswell at 9 seconds, the combo energy jumps to 856 and it’s lumpy and poor. That pattern drags through the rest of the week, with clean but tiny surf Friday and Saturday morning—5ft Friday is the best of those, but it’s only a morning call with light cross-offshore NNW wind. Saturday and Sunday drop off to ankle-slappers under 2ft, not worth a wet suit.
Then there’s a real dry spell from Monday the 25th right through to the end of the month. It’s a long gap of poor conditions—cross-onshore winds, lumpy seas, and swell energy that never finds clean alignment. A few pulses pop up, like 10ft swell on Tuesday the 1st of September, but that’s with 31 mph southerly winds and near-gale cross-onshore. That’s blown-out chaos, more for kite surfers than paddlers.
The only other worthwhile period sneaks in on Wednesday the 2nd of September—6ft of WNW groundswell at 11 seconds, clean conditions with a cross-offshore north wind, and energy of 1212. That’s a long-period swell, so it’ll wrap nicely around the point, though at a beach-and-point setup it can break a bit straight. It’s a month and a half out, so take it as a promising maybe, not a lock. That afternoon stays clean with 7ft—same call.
Overall, this 16-day run is thin. Wednesday the 19th morning is your one true standout. After that, you’re waiting until the first week of September for another shot, and that’s still a gamble. A blank run like this is fairly normal for the area, so don’t get too glum—forecasts can shift.
Rusty.
