Yo, what’s happening, this is Rusty. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming up for Le Petit Minou.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and underwhelming. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with poor conditions through most of the first week. There’s a bit of a gap in real quality surf until the end of the month. The real standout action is shaping up for Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th, but it’s not for everyone.
Right now, the water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is 4° above the norm for this time of year – that’s pretty warm for these parts.
From Saturday the 11th through to about Thursday the 23rd, it’s mostly small, messy, and not worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, often under 3 ft, and the period is short, under 10 seconds. Winds are mostly cross-onshore or cross-offshore, and the energy is weak (combined energy often under 100). A few sessions on Sunday the 19th show a little bump with a 4 ft to 4 ft WNW swell, but the period is only 7 seconds, and the wind is a fresh offshore breeze (35 km/h), so it’ll be clean but the waves will be short and dumpy. The combined energy sits at 171 to 203 (moderate) but the quality just isn’t there.
The real action kicks off on Friday the 24th. The morning is promising with a 7 ft swell from the west, period of 6 seconds, and a light offshore breeze from the NE. The combined energy is 317 (moderate to strong). This is a solid size for intermediates, but it’s a short period, so expect a bit of a walled-up, dumpy wave at the beach. The wind is clean, so it’ll be surfable, but it’s not the best shape.
Friday afternoon, the swell jumps to 10 ft from the WNW, period of 9 seconds, with a massive combined energy of 1464 (strong). That’s big, powerful, and clean with a gentle offshore breeze. But this is only for experts – 10 ft is too big for most, and the period is decent, but at a beach-and-point setup, it could be a bit of a washing machine. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’ll be lined up, but you need to know what you’re doing.
Saturday the 25th is absolutely massive. The morning sees a 10 ft WNW swell, period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a whopping 3380 (very strong). That’s a serious groundswell, but the wind is cross-onshore (20 km/h), so it’ll be choppy and messy. This is purely for experts, and even then, it might be more of a tow-in or kite scene than a clean paddle session. The afternoon drops to 7 ft but with cross-onshore winds, so not great.
So, the only standout that’s worth highlighting is Friday the 24th morning. That 7 ft W swell with light offshore wind offers the best chance of a clean, fun session for intermediate to advanced surfers. The Saturday morning is too big, too powerful, and the wind is wrong. Sunday the 26th still has 6 ft but with cross-onshore winds, so it’s a write-off.
To sum it up: a long flat spell, then a big pulse of energy at the end of the month. If you’re an expert, maybe paddle out Friday the 24th afternoon if you’re brave, but the morning is your best bet for a proper session. For everyone else, wait and see if the forecasts change.
Rusty.
