The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. It’s been a rough run at Le Petit Minou. We’re looking at a 16-day window, but for the first week and a half, there’s just nothing doing. The surf is tiny, the wind is howling, and it’s a total bust. There’s a big gap from the start until the 1st of September where you’re better off staying on the beach. It’s one of those stretches where the ocean just doesn’t want to play ball.
The first real chance to get a wave comes on the morning of Tuesday, the 1st of September. The wind is glassy, dead calm, which is a huge win for Le Petit Minou (beach and point). The swell is a tiny 3 feet from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. There’s only 106 (moderate wave energy) in the water, so it’s weak. The water temperature is 65°, which is about average for the time of year. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. Don’t get too excited, but if you’re jonesing for a paddle, you’ll find a few grovelly ones.
Now, the next morning on Wednesday, the 2nd of September, things get a bit more interesting. The swell picks up to 6 feet from the southwest, with a 9 second period. The combined energy jumps to 1014 (strong wave energy). The wind is a light cross-shore from the SSE, so it’s not perfect, but it’s workable. This is the best we’ve got on offer. The break is fairly consistent, and the direction from the SW is right in its sweet spot. The waves will have a bit more punch, but it’s still a marginal call with the tide. It’s a standout because it’s the only real window of half-decent surf in the whole outlook.
After that, the swell gets huge and ugly. Thursday the 3rd of September sees a massive 13-foot west swell with a long 12 second period, but the wind is howling onshore from the WSW at 19 mph. The energy is 6762 (very strong wave energy), but it’s a total mess. This is expert-only territory with that size, and the wind is destroying it. The same goes for the 3rd and 4th of September – it’s just big, blown-out, and lumpy. Not for the faint of heart.
By the weekend of the 5th and 6th of September, the wind finally swings offshore from the NNW. The swell drops to 8 feet and 7 feet on the Saturday, and the energy is still strong (1091 and 1231). The wind is clean, cross-off, so the waves will be clean. But it’s still a marginal call, and the swell period is a short 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly. Sunday the 6th is a tail-off back to 4 feet and weak.
Honestly, if you’re looking to get wet, the Wednesday morning of the 2nd of September is your best bet. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only one that’s worth a look. The rest of the time, it’s a waiting game.
