The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Le Petit Minou over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch to start. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing really worth paddling out for. The first proper surfable waves don’t show up until Thursday the 23rd of July, and even then, it’s pretty average. The water is sitting at 67° and that’s a whopping 5° warmer than usual for this time of year, so you’ll be swimming in a bath, but the waves just aren’t cooperating.
From Tuesday the 14th right through to Wednesday the 22nd, it’s all tiny, weak swell. We’re talking 1 ft to 1 ft waves from the west, with combined energy barely cracking 30 or 40 (weak energy). There’s a nice glassy morning on Saturday the 18th, but with nothing to ride, it’s just a waste of a good wind. The wind does go offshore a fair bit, light and clean, but you can’t surf what isn’t there.
Finally, on Thursday the 23rd of July, we get a pulse. The morning shows a 4 ft swell from the SSW, with combined energy jumping to 161 (moderate energy). The wind is a gentle offshore from the NE, so it’ll be clean. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell, and the description says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s a 1/10 score, so manage your expectations. After that, it drops back to tiny junk through the 24th and 25th.
Hold on, because Sunday the 26th of July is where it gets interesting. The morning brings a 6 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 12 seconds (long period groundswell) and combined energy hitting 923 (strong energy). That’s a proper bump. The catch is the wind is cross-shore from the NW at 12 mph, which will put a bit of a chop on it. For a beach and point setup like Le Petit Minou, that long period will definitely wrap around the point better than the beach. It’s too big for beginners, and borderline for intermediates, but the experienced crew are going to have some fun. This is the standout of the whole forecast.
Monday the 27th keeps the size at 6 ft to 6 ft from the WNW, but the wind stays cross-shore and gets a bit stronger, making it lumpy. Tuesday the 28th jumps up to 8 ft from the SW, but it’s onshore wind and a short 8-second period, so that’s just a messy, blown-out wall for experts only. The energy is still strong (828 to 911), but the quality is awful.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is the Sunday morning of the 26th of July. That’s the one with the biggest, longest-period swell, and if the cross-shore wind lays down a touch, the point at Le Petit Minou will be the place to be. Everything else before that is a flat spell you’ll want to sleep through.
Rusty.
