Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are holding for us at Anse de Cabestan.
Alright, the bottom line? If you're looking for that one perfect session, you might be waiting a while. The overall pattern is one of very ordinary, small surf mixed with a lot of wind-ruined windows. There's a little spike of energy around the 14th, but even that comes with caveats. For the first week and a half, it's going to be a grind.
We start things off on Saturday morning, July 4th. The water is sitting at a notable 66°F, which is a good 4°F above what you'd normally expect for this time of year, so that's a little treat. The swell is a modest 4 ft from the west, with a 10-second period. Nothing to write home about size-wise, but that light breeze from the north, coming cross-off, will be keeping the surface clean. The combined energy is moderate here at 245, so there's a little push. It's surfable. But by Saturday afternoon, that wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph from the NNW and it's still cross-off, but the quality drops right off. It's a write-off.
Sunday morning, July 5th, we get a genuine offshore wind from the NNE at 6 mph, but the price is smaller swell, only 2 ft. The combined energy drops to 145. It’s clean, but very ordinary. Sunday afternoon is a cross-shore mess.
Monday morning, July 6th, is a real teaser. The morning is glassy. A flat calm 3 mph from the NE. The swell is only 3 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period and the combined energy is 100, which is barely in the moderate category. It’s a glassy knee-to-waist high situation. You could get some fun little ones on a longboard if you're desperate. The rest of that week, from Monday afternoon all the way through the weekend of the 11th and 12th, is a real write-off. Constant onshore or strong cross-shore winds from the west and northwest, and the swell is a mix of small and messy. The weekend of the 11th-12th even sees some 5 ft to 5 ft swell, but it's coupled with 16 mph onshore winds and a short, weak 7-second period. The combined energy spikes to 252, but it's just a lumpy, blown-out mess. That's more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.
Now, let's talk about the one and only standout here. It's a conditional one. Look at Tuesday morning, July 14th. We finally get a pulse of energy. The swell is a cleaner 4 ft from the WNW, with a 10-second period. The combined energy jumps significantly to 363, which is the strongest we see in the whole period. The wind is cross-off from the NNW at a manageable 12 mph, so the face will be clean. This is the best window on offer. It's not a perfect day, because it's a bit windy, but this is the only day where the swell has some real grunt and the wind is mostly working for us. Be aware, though, the crowd factor at Anse de Cabestan says "often" busy, so expect company if the forecast holds.
The rest of the second week is more of the same: small, ordinary surf or onshore wind. There's another minor bump on the 14th afternoon, but the wind switches to a messy cross. The 15th and 16th are just small and ordinary. By the time we hit the 19th, the swell is barely a ripple at 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft with onshore rain. That's it.
Forget the whole second week after that 14th. It's flat or wind-chopped. The 14th morning is the one to circle on your calendar, and even then, keep your expectations in check. It'll be the best of a tough bunch.
Rusty.
