The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real – this is a tough stretch for Anse de Cabestan. Right now, the ocean is just not giving us anything to get excited about. The first week and a half or so is a total write-off, with tiny, weak swell (combined energy rarely even hits 50) and mostly clean conditions that are just too small to paddle for. The water is a touch warmer than normal for July at 65°F, which is nice for a float, but not for a wave.
We go through a long dry spell from this Thursday morning all the way through to the morning of Tuesday, 29 July. The swell is practically non-existent, with heights barely pushing 1 ft. Even when the wind goes offshore, like it does on Sunday the 20th and Monday the 21st, the waves are just too gutless to ride. Honestly, it’s more of a kiteboarding setup than a surf session.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Wednesday morning, 29 July. The swell finally nudges up to 2 ft from the W with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to a moderate 115. The wind is light and cross-off from the N, making it clean. But the forecast calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so don’t expect a classic. It’s a small, clean wave for a longboard or a foiler, but it’s something.
The standouts – and I use that word loosely – come at the very end of the outlook. On Thursday morning, 30 July, we see a 3 ft SW swell with a short period of 6 seconds and a strong offshore wind from the NE at 22 mph. That’ll be clean, but the short period means it’s going to be a bit weak and fat. The real moment of truth is Thursday afternoon, 30 July. The swell picks up to 5 ft from the WSW, period at 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 229 (strong). The wind goes glassy, calm as can be from the SE. That is the best bet in the entire 16-day window – clean, glassy conditions with a punchy little swell. But it’s 16 days out, so keep your fingers crossed.
Friday morning, 31 July, holds similar 5 ft swell from the WSW, but the wind picks up to a cross-off NNW breeze, making it clean but less perfect. The energy is still high at 326, but the afternoon turns cross-shore and lumpy, so morning is the go.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re desperate, wait for the 30th of July afternoon for the glassy window. That’s your one true standout. The rest of the time? The ocean is playing hard to get. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
