The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at what’s cooking for Guethary – Les Alcyons/Avalanche. Gotta be honest with you, it’s a rough stretch ahead. This is an expert reef, so it’s not for the faint of heart, and we’ve got a long dry patch before anything good rolls in.
Right now, the water’s sitting at a very unusual 78°, which is way warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real standout. But don’t get excited about the warm water; the waves are basically flat through the rest of July and into the first few days of August. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Saturday the 26th, it’s all tiny, weak, and mostly messy. Swell heights rarely push past 3 ft, and period is short and weak – combined energy values are mostly in the teens and twenties (19 to 58), which is very weak. The wind is often cross-on or onshore, keeping things choppy. There are a few glassy moments on Thursday 16th morning and Saturday 18th morning, but with only 2 ft of swell at 5 seconds, there’s just not enough to ride. It’s a real flat spell.
The one true standout hits on Monday the 27th of July. That morning, we see a cleaner picture with a light ENE cross-offshore breeze and a solid 4 ft swell from the northwest, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 318 (moderate energy) and the wave comment finally turns positive. That’s your first real window in over two weeks.
But the absolute best is Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning is pure glass – NW wind at 3 mph and a clean 5 ft swell from the northwest, period at 10 seconds. The combined energy hits 562, which is strong. This is a proper groundswell, and at that size it’s pushing into expert territory – over 5 ft, so not for beginners. The wind stays glassy, so expect clean, powerful lines at this reef. Just keep in mind, crowds are often here, so you’ll have company.
Wednesday the 29th also has a glassy start with 5 ft from the northwest and 10-second period, combined energy at 408. It’s another good option, but not quite the peak of Tuesday.
So, to sum it up: there is a long, flat, poor-quality gap from now until Sunday the 26th. Then Monday the 27th is a return to rideable surf, and Tuesday the 28th morning is the standout – the biggest, cleanest, most powerful swell of the period. Get on it if you can.
Rusty.
