Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Ilbaritz - Edouard VII. It's a tough stretch, I ain't gonna lie. We’re looking at a reef break that’s fairly consistent, usually holds a west swell, and needs that east wind to clean it up. The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—about 7° above average, so you might not need the thickest suit.
We’re starting off on Sunday morning, July 5th. There’s a little 2ft swell from the NW with a period of 11 seconds—that’s a groundswell, got some energy (133 moderate). The wind is light from the NE, so it’s cross-offshore, keeping it clean. It’s not gonna blow you away, but it’s surfable. The water’s warm, the conditions are clean, and for what it is, it’s a decent little window. Small waves though, so don’t expect any barrels.
The rest of Sunday and pretty much all of Monday, it’s small and the wind shifts around. Monday morning gives you that east offshore again with a 2ft NW swell, period dropping to 9 seconds. Clean again, but the energy is weak (65). Surfable but ordinary.
Now, there’s a proper standout, and it comes on Tuesday morning, July 7th. The swell is only 2ft from the NW, period 8 seconds, energy weak (39), but the wind is glassy. I mean dead flat, glassy. When a reef goes glassy like that, you can make the most of even a tiny wave. Special morning for the patient surfer.
We hit a big gap of poor conditions after that. From Tuesday afternoon all the way through to Friday, it’s onshore, cross-onshore, or messy. The swell stays under 2ft, but the wind is from the W or WNW, just ruining it. There’s a brief moment on Friday morning, July 10th, with glassy again—east wind, 2ft, 9 second period—energy weak (60). You might get a couple, but nothing special. Afternoon gets chopped.
Saturday the 11th is similar: small, cross-onshore in the afternoon. Not worth the paddle.
Sunday morning July 12th: this is the real standout. The swell lifts a touch to 2ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, and the combined energy hits 113—moderate, feels like some grunt behind it. The wind is glassy. Glassy conditions on a 2ft NW groundswell at a reef? That’s the pick of the whole 16 days. The period is 10 seconds, so it’ll have nice shape, not too straight. If you can get out there Sunday morning, that’s your session. Crowds are often, so expect company.
Monday morning the 13th has glassy winds with 3ft swell from the NW, 9 second period, energy just under 100 (97). Clean, but energy is weaker than Sunday. Still worth a look.
Tuesday the 14th, swell jumps to 4ft from NW, period drops to 7 seconds. Energy is up to 166 (moderate), but wind is cross-onshore from the NW. That short period and cross-onshore is garbage. Waves will be lumpy and weak. No.
We get a clean-up Wednesday the 15th. Morning is glassy with 2ft WNW swell, 10 second period. Energy weak (76). Small and glassy, so if you’re patient, you could get a few clean ones. Afternoon has a light cross-off breeze, keeping it clean.
From Thursday the 16th, it’s back to onshore or cross-onshore, and swell stays small to moderate. There’s a pulse on Friday the 17th: 4ft from NW, 9 seconds, moderate energy (215), but wind is onshore and gusty. By Saturday the 18th, swell hits 5ft from NW, period 8 seconds, strong energy (244), but all onshore. That’s gonna be a messy, closed-out mess. For experts only if they’re desperate.
Sunday the 19th is more onshore chop with a dropping swell. Monday the 20th is small and onshore.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are the glassy mornings. Tuesday the 7th, Sunday the 12th, and Monday the 13th are your best bets. The standout is Sunday the 12th—that 2ft NW groundswell with glassy conditions at a reef is as good as it gets in this run. Everything else is ordinary or poor. If you can only surf once, make it Sunday the 12th morning. Small, clean, and fun. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off.
Rusty.
