The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for our local stretch of coast.

The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. We’ve got some solid swell on the way, but the wind is going to be the main character for a lot of it. The water is sitting at a warm 75°, which is a fair bit toastier than normal for this time of year, so you can ditch the thick wetsuit for a while.

The first real chance to get a wave is Saturday afternoon (29th August) , but it’s a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, but the wind is a cross-on from the NNW at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. The energy is moderate (362), but the conditions are poor. Honestly, I’d give it a miss.

Sunday morning (30th August) is where it starts to get interesting at Anglet - Chambre d'Amour. The swell is still a solid 5ft from the WNW, period stretching to 10 seconds, and the wind is dead calm – glassy. That’s a major positive. The combined energy is up to moderate (421), and the conditions are looking clean. This is a good window for the intermediate crew. Crowds are often a factor here, so expect company. The afternoon turns onshore at 12 mph, so get your session in early.

Monday (31st August) is frustrating. The swell bumps up to 5ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon, with energy climbing to a strong 569, but it’s onshore wind all day. It’s going to be a chopped-up mess. The forecast is marginal at best.

Tuesday morning (1st September) is a real treat. The swell drops back to a clean 5ft from the NW, with a 10-second period, and we get a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at just 3 mph. The energy is moderate (384) but the conditions are clean. This is a solid option for a morning surf before the afternoon onshore kills it again.

After that, things get small. Wednesday (2nd) and Thursday (3rd) mornings are glassy, but the swell is tiny – 3ft and 2ft respectively. The energy is weak (123 and 44). You’ll find a longboard-friendly ripple, but it’s nothing to get excited about.

Now, here’s a standout to mark in your calendar. Friday morning (4th September) looks promising. We’ve got a 3ft groundswell from the NW, but the period is a very long 15 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which means proper lines, but it can be a bit too straight for the beach break. The wind is glassy, and the energy is surprisingly punchy for the size at 370. It’s a sneaky-good session for the dawn patrol.

The real highlight, though, is Saturday morning (5th September) . This is the best on offer in the 16-day window. The swell is a clean 5ft from the NW with an 11-second period, and we’re getting a cross-offshore breeze from the east at 9 mph. The energy is strong (568), and the conditions are clean. At 5ft, it’s still manageable for intermediates, but it’s got enough push to keep things interesting. Get on it early.

The second week is a bit more of a gamble. Sunday (6th September) is blown out with strong cross-onshore wind. Monday morning (7th) is glassy again but small, with 3ft and a 9-second period, energy at 216. It’s a weak but clean option.

There’s a bit of a gap after that, with messy conditions through the middle of the week. Friday morning (11th September) , a week and a half out, offers a promising sign: 3ft swell from the WNW with a very long 16-second period and glassy winds. The energy is moderate (347). It’s long-range, so don’t book the day off yet, but it’s something to watch.

Saturday morning (12th September) shows a 5ft swell from the WNW with a 12-second period, but with a light cross-onshore wind. It’s borderline, but the energy is strong (636). Sunday morning (13th September) , the last day in the window, gives us a final glassy chance with 4ft from the NW and an 11-second period, energy at 413. A nice way to close out the run.

To sum it up: Sunday morning (30th August) and Saturday morning (5th September) are your two standout sessions. If you can only pick one, go for the 5th – it’s got the best combo of size, wind, and energy.

Rusty out.
