The Lowdown
Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what’s shaping up for Hourtin Plage. Gotta be honest, it’s a bit of a slow burner. The first week is pretty quiet, but there is one session that’s gonna make the wait worthwhile if you’ve got the patience.
For the first five or six days, it’s a frustrating stretch. Nothing’s really moving. The first sign of life shows up on Thursday, the 20th of August, early. We’ve got glassy seas with a 3ft swell coming from the WNW. The energy is low at (176), but the period stretches to 11 seconds, giving it some push. That dead flat surface is the big win here. It’s small and clean, alright for a longboard or a foiler, but this isn’t the highlight of the month. The water’s running at 77°, which is about 6° warmer than what’s normal for this time of year – very unusual, but feels like a bath.
Then we hit a dry spell until Thursday the 27th. A lot of days with choppy cross-shore wind and tiny waves. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, listen up. Friday the 28th of August, first light. That’s your day. The swell jumps to a solid 6ft from the WNW, period at 9 seconds, and the energy hits (984). That’s proper power. And the wind? Dead glass. The optimum direction is straight out of the west, and this matches up perfect. At 6ft, it’s too big for the groms, but for the rest of us, on a sandbar, with that kind of clean face? It’s gonna be pumping. The afternoon sees it push to 8ft but the wind gets messy, so don’t sleep in.
The weekend after that gets huge and messy. The 29th pumps a 12ft groundswell with a 13-second period and strong onshore wind. The energy is (3550) – huge, but blown out and lumpy. Only for the brave. The 30th has some lighter wind and a 7ft swell, but it’s still lumpy. After that, it drops back to 4-5ft with onshore winds again.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a bust with a tiny, clean session on the 20th morning. The big score is Friday the 28th of August morning. Don’t miss it.
Rusty.
