The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about the next couple of weeks at Lacanau Ocean.
It's a rough start to the outlook, I won't sugarcoat it. The water is warmer than normal, sitting at 78°, which is a good 7° above the long-term average – that's very unusual. But the trade-off is the surf is flat out poor for days. We've got a long stretch of small, weak waves with a messy cross-on wind through Friday, and that poor quality hangs around. The wave energy is weak, barely pushing 339 (combined energy) on Friday morning, then dropping right off.
Saturday the 22nd is the first real glimmer of hope. The morning sees a small 3 ft swell from the WNW at 9 seconds, but the wind turns offshore from the East at 6 mph. It'll be clean, but the energy is still low at 151. It's surfable, but nothing to get excited about. After that, we hit a real dead zone. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Tuesday the 3rd of September, the swell is tiny, the energy is weak, and the conditions are mostly ordinary. There are a few mornings with clean winds, but the waves are just too small to be worth paddling out for.
The standout period in this whole outlook is a wildcard, and it's a long way off. Around Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of August, the swell really starts to build. By Friday afternoon, we're looking at 8 ft of swell from the West at 9 seconds, with a strong combined energy of 899. However, the wind is a solid onshore 25 mph from the West. That's a lot of power, but it will be a mess. This setup is more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. The swell drops a bit into Saturday the 29th with 6 ft and 6 ft, but the wind stays cross-on from the WSW. The energy is still strong at 602, but the quality is poor.
If you're desperate, the very last day of the outlook, Thursday the 3rd of September, has a small 4 ft swell from the West, but the wind is forecast to be glassy in the morning. That's about as clean as it gets, but the swell is small and the period is short at 7 seconds. Honestly, the best bet is to wait for the big swell at the end of August and hope the wind forecast changes. For now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
