The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at what’s coming up for Lacanau Ocean. I’ll be straight with you – the next few days are flat out grim. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th have barely a ripple, with tiny swell and poor conditions. We’re talking knee-high slop at best. The water temp is sitting at 76°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only highlight. The week ahead is a write-off until Thursday the 27th.
Thursday morning the 27th is the first real glimmer of hope. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the west, period around 9 seconds, and light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is moderate (318). This is a proper surfable wave, but by afternoon the wind swings onshore and chops it up. So if you can get out early, Thursday morning is your best bet for a while.
Friday the 28th sees a big jump in size – 12ft from the west with a 10 to 11 second period. That’s a lot of energy (2180 to 2969). But the wind is howling onshore at 25 to 28 mph. This is a mess for a paddle board. That kind of setup at a beach break like Lacanau is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than surfing. Stay on the sand unless you’ve got a kite.
Saturday the 29th drops a bit but stays big at 7ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon, with onshore wind all day. Still rough. Sunday the 30th eases down to 4ft with light cross-off wind in the morning – surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Now, Monday the 31st of August is the standout in this whole outlook. Morning session is looking magic. 5ft of west-northwest swell, period around 8 seconds, combined energy at 363 (moderate), and glassy conditions with easterly wind at just 3 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets for a beach break. This is the day to make plans for. Get out there early before the afternoon wind kicks in.
After that, things go quiet again. Early September is all small, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore wind. Wednesday the 2nd of September has a glassy morning with 3ft from the west-northwest, but the energy is low (93). It’s surfable but ordinary. The rest of the first week of September is pretty flat, with a few tiny pulses and lots of wind. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendation after the 31st, so don’t hold your breath.
In short: Thursday 27th morning is okay, but Monday 31st morning is the real gem – clean, chest-high glass. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big and blown out.
Rusty.
