The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Lacanau-Ocean over the next two and a bit weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. Lacanau’s a consistent, exposed beachie that usually dishes up something, but the 16-day window is looking near flat or just plain messy. The water is running way warmer than normal for this time of year, about 5° warmer than average, so you’ll be in boardies if you paddle out, but that’s about the only positive.
Starting Sunday 19 July, the morning has a tiny 0.98 ft WNW swell with a cross-off breeze – clean but no power. The afternoon cranks up to 19 mph NNW wind, lumpy and cross-shore, and the swell is only 3 ft with a pathetic 4-second period. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. Monday 20 July is even worse: 0.33 ft in the morning. Tuesday through Thursday are all small, with the odd 2–3 ft, but the wind is either cross-off (clean) or cross-shore choppy, and the swell periods are short (4–6 seconds). Not worth paddling out.
Friday 24 July has a clean morning with 1 ft and offshore E wind, but again, tiny. The weekend of 25–26 July is a write-off: onshore winds, rain showers, and barely any swell. The combined energy is weak, rarely cracking 100 except for a few afternoons.
Now, there is a tiny glimmer on Tuesday 28 July. The morning pushes 5 ft from the NW with a 8-second period, and the combined energy hits 244 – moderate. But the wind is cross-shore, and the afternoon gets cross-onshore and choppy. Still, it’s the biggest we’ve seen. Then Wednesday 29 July morning offers our best shot: 4 ft NW swell, 10-second period, combined energy 286 (moderate, solid), and a NNE cross-off breeze at 9 mph. That’s clean. But the forecast says “marginal surf conditions or questionable tide,” so don’t get your hopes up. It’s the only day that even scores a 1 out of 10. After that, the rest of the week into early August fades back to tiny, choppy slop.
So honestly, there’s no standout. Nothing worth calling a “best on offer.” If you’re desperate, the morning of Wednesday 29 July is your only halfway decent window – clean, waist-high, and a bit of push from the NW. But it’s marginal. The rest? Leave the board at home. For a spot that’s usually consistent, this is a rare dry spell. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but as it stands, it’s a big fat zero.
Stay patient,
Rusty.
