The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for Lacanau Ocean, with a lot of onshore wind and poor conditions to fight through. But we’ve got a couple of windows that’ll make it worthwhile if you’re patient.
Right now, we’re in a flat, messy spell. From Monday 24 August through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The swell energy is mostly weak (19 to 105), and the waves are just poor. There’s a morning on Wednesday 26 August with 2ft of west swell and an offshore easterly breeze making things clean, but the energy is weak (57) and the surf is just ordinary. Not a standout.
The first real moment of hope comes on Thursday 27 August morning. We’ve got a 4ft west swell, 8-second period, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the southeast. The energy is moderate (200) and the surf is marginal, but it’s clean. That’s better than what we’ve been seeing.
Then we hit a rough patch. Friday 28 August through to Monday 31 August the swell builds, but it’s a mess. Wind is onshore, strong, and the surf gets blown out. Saturday morning the 29th has 6ft of west swell (517 energy), but it’s onshore. Monday 31 August has 6ft of west swell (415 energy), but again, onshore. Not for paddling.
The first real standout comes on Tuesday 1 September in the morning. A 4ft west-northwest swell, 9-second period, with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the northeast. The energy is solid (254) and the conditions are good. This is the one to circle. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no thermal shock. Lacanau Ocean is a consistent, exposed beach break, and with the swell coming from the west-northwest, it’s lining up. Crowds are sometimes a factor, so expect some company.
The next good window is a bit further out. On Monday 7 September morning, we’ve got another 4ft west-northwest swell, 10-second period, and a clean offshore breeze from the east. The energy is strong (412) and the forecast is for good surf. That’s a solid second option.
Looking way ahead to Tuesday 8 September morning, the models are showing an 8ft west swell with a very long 18-second period. That’s massive energy (4553). This is a serious groundswell. For a beach break like Lacanau, that long period can make the waves break a bit straight and fat, but it’s also incredibly powerful. This one is for experts only, and it’s still a long way off, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The wind is onshore, so that could be the difference between a day of my life and a washing machine.
Overall, the best on offer is definitely the Tuesday 1 September morning session. Clean, 4ft, west-northwest swell, and decent energy. The Monday 7 September morning is a close second, with a bit more muscle. The rest of the window is a lot of waiting.
Rusty out.
