Alright, grab your board, let’s talk about what’s happening around Lacanau Ocean.
This stretch is in for a bit of a frustrating run, to be honest. The next week and a half looks pretty bleak, with a real flat spell from around the 8th to the 18th of July. It’s not a total loss, but you’ve got to be patient and pick your windows. The only glimmer of something interesting is way out at the very end of the forecast.
We start off this Sunday morning (5th July) with a small, clean setup. Swell is a weak 2ft out of the WNW, with a longish 10-second period, but the combined wave energy is pretty weak (91). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NE, making it glassy and clean. It’s surfable, but pretty ordinary. That window closes quick though, as the afternoon turns to junk.
Monday morning (6th July) offers another tiny chance. Even smaller swell, 2ft, but the wind swings around to a light offshore from the ESE, keeping the conditions clean. Again, very small and weak energy (51). It’s a dawn patrol special at best.
Now, for the true standout. Everyone should circle Saturday 19th July on their calendars. That morning, there’s a jump in size. The swell comes up to 4ft from the WNW, and the energy jumps to a moderate 163 – that’s real power. We’ve got a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, which should keep things clean. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and not holding its shape great, but it’s the only real window of surfable, clean waves in the whole outlook. That afternoon, however, the wind goes cross and the swell jumps to 6ft with a ton of energy (627), but with the onshore wind and short period, it’s going to be a messy, choppy beast only for the brave.
Before that, Sunday morning (12th July) is a small consolation. The swell is 3ft with a nice 10-second groundswell period, and the wind goes offshore from the E. It’s gentle and clean (energy 107). It’s worth a look for the long-period glass, but with such small size, it’s not a standout. Long period like that will love a point or a river mouth, but on a beach break it might be a bit too straight.
Water temps are about average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary. Crowds at Lacanau Ocean can be an issue, so for that 19th July window, expect the pack to be out because it’s the best thing on offer by a long shot.
The 7th through the 18th of July is pretty much dead. Most days have onshore wind and tiny, weak mush (energy between 17 and 92). The 8th of July has 1ft swell, period of 8 seconds – a real dog. The 14th of July is the worst, with 0.7ft and barely any energy (17). You’re better off cleaning your wax.
For the rest of the 16-day window, it’s a waiting game. The 19th July morning is your only real bet, and even then it’s not perfect. Keep an eye on the forecasts, as things can change.
