The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s see what Lacanau Ocean has in store for the next couple of weeks.
The first week is a bit of a slow burn, with onshore winds messing up the bigger stuff and only tiny, clean waves on offer. The real standout is a one-morning window on Sunday, 30th August, when it all comes together. The rest of the time, the wind is a problem.
Saturday morning, 22nd August, we’ve got a waist-high 3ft swell from the WNW with a light offshore breeze from the east. The water is a balmy 76°, which is much warmer than normal. The energy is moderate. It’s okay, but nothing special. By the afternoon, the wind picks up from the north and the surf gets chopped out.
Sunday and Monday are tiny – barely 1ft. The conditions are clean, but there’s no push. Not worth a paddle.
From Wednesday the 26th, the swell builds, but it’s under a strong onshore westerly wind. By Thursday the 27th, we’re looking at 6ft of messy, lumpy surf. The energy is very strong, but the wind is ruining it. This is kite-surfing territory, not for a log. This onshore, windy mess continues for a few days.
Now, the one to circle. Sunday morning, 30th August. The wind drops to practically nothing – glassy. The swell is a clean 5ft from the WNW, with a moderate period and solid energy. It’s marked as “glassy” and “expect good surf conditions.” This is the session. Lacanau Ocean will be clean and fun for intermediate surfers. Just expect a crowd, as this spot is always popular.
The window closes in the afternoon as the wind returns. The following week looks like more onshore wind and building swell, with the 3rd of September showing a 7ft groundswell with a very long 13-second period, but the wind is onshore, making it a messy, expert-only day. The energy is very strong.
Bottom line: the 30th of August is the morning to be in the water. Don’t miss it.
Rusty.
