Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Lacanau Ocean. I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak. There's a gap right at the start with a whole lot of nothing really worth paddling out for. The first day with anything surfable is Sunday the 5th, but even then it's weak. The overall pattern is a long stretch of small, wonky swells with rubbish winds, so we're in for a patient wait. The first real window, if you can call it that, is Sunday morning.
Alright, Sunday the 5th of July, early. It's nothin' special. We've got a tiny 2ft swell rolling in from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is really weak, only 90. On the plus side, the wind is a light cross-off from the NE, so it'll be clean. The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 7° above average. We're talkin' a real tropical feel in the water for a French beach break. But still, these are just surfable waves in very ordinary conditions, nothing to get excited about. Monday the 6th morning is similar, a little 2ft from the WNW, but with a clean offshore breeze from the East. The energy is even lower at 54. It's a morning for a log or a longboard, if you're desperate for a paddle, but it's not a standout.
Now, after Monday, we fall off a cliff. From Tuesday the 7th right through to Thursday the 16th, the scores are almost universally 'poor'. There's a whole heap of days with tiny swell under 2ft and cross, cross-on, or onshore winds. The wind state is a mess of 'gentle cross-onshore and fairly choppy' or 'moderate cross-onshore and choppy'. This is a blank run. It's not unusual for an exposed beach break like this to go quiet, but it doesn't mean it's fun. There's one day, the 12th of July, Sunday, where the swell bumps up a little – morning sees 3ft and the afternoon gets to 4ft from the WNW, with moderate wave energy of 132 to 172 – but it's all under a moderate cross-onshore from the NNW and NW. The comments are all 'poor surf conditions'. Let's be real, that's a messy, choppy, blown-out mess. Not worth your time.
We get a slight reprieve on the 15th of July, a Wednesday morning. Another tiny 1ft WNW swell, but the wind is a light cross-off from the NE. It's clean, but there's almost no energy (60). It's surfable, but barely. The 16th morning is similar with a 2ft WNW swell and a light cross-off from the SE, but again, the energy is low at 62.
Beyond that, the end of the second week into the 17th of July shows a bit more size – 4ft to 4ft from the W – but with a short, weak period of only 6 to 7 seconds and onshore winds. The combined energy hits 150, which is moderate, but the quality is described as poor. A short period onshore swell on an exposed beach is just a closeout crumble.
So, what's the best on offer? Honestly, the very best window is that first couple of mornings. If I had to pick, it's the Monday the 6th of July, early morning. You've got a clean 2ft swell from the WNW with a clean offshore wind from the East. It's small, gutless, and there's barely any energy (54), but it will be the cleanest, most rideable wave in the whole 16-day window. For an intermediate or a longboarder, you might get a few fun ones. The crowds are listed as 'sometimes', so you might have some company on those small peelers.
For the rest? It's a kite-surfing show for the most part. The combination of consistent, moderate wind and poor wave quality makes that setup look way more interesting if you've got a kite than a paddle board.
Rusty, signing off.
