The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down the same outlook but in the old money.
So, looking at Lacanau Ocean, it’s a tough one to call. The first week and a half looks like a total bust, with hardly any clean, rideable waves. The water is a warm 76°, which is a good 5° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a real shame the surf isn't cooperating.
We kick off with a pulse of swell, around 5ft from the WNW, but it’s ruined by a strong cross-onshore wind on Friday the 21st. The energy is moderate (394), but it’s just messy. The only real glimmer in the first week is a brief window on Saturday morning the 22nd. The swell drops to 3ft from the WNW, but the wind goes light and offshore from the East. The combined energy is weak (151), but it’ll be clean. The problem is, it’s really just a last resort for a paddle.
The rest of that week and into the next is a write-off. We’ve got a mix of onshore winds, tiny swell, and on the 27th and 28th, the swell jumps up to 8ft and 6ft, but with strong onshore winds (up to 22 mph), it’s just a washing machine. That 8ft on the 27th with 724 energy is a lot of power, but it’s expert-only chaos in those conditions. Honestly, for a beach break like Lacanau, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The one standout, and I mean the *only* one worth getting excited about, is a long-range whisper. It’s a bit of a gamble, but check out Thursday morning, September 3rd. We’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the W with a moderate 9-second period, and the combined energy is a strong 769. Now, the wind is forecast to be onshore, which is a risk, but models change. If that wind backs off even a little, this could be a proper session. It’s big, so it’s for experienced surfers only, but the potential is there. The Friday morning the 4th after that also has a 5ft swell from the WNW, but it’s a similar story with the wind. So, keep your eyes on the 3rd of September. It’s a long way out, but it’s the only real promise on the board.
Rusty.
