The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s your local surf reporter Rusty here. Let’s take a good look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us here.
Right now, we’re in a tough stretch. The beginning of this outlook is a quiet one, I’m afraid. We have to sit through a few days of nothing good, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to the 26th. We’re looking at tiny waves and messy winds, just not worth paddling out for. Hang tight.
The first real glimmer comes on Wednesday morning the 26th of August. It’s only a tiny 1ft with ESE offshore wind, so it’s clean, but it’s small. The energy is weak, just 44. That’s a “surfable but ordinary” kind of session. The afternoon is similar, a little cleaner with a baby cross-off breeze.
Now, here’s where it starts to get interesting. Thursday morning the 27th of August? That’s the one to point at. The wind goes glassy, dead calm. We get a 5ft swell coming from the WNW with a solid 9-second period. The combined energy jumps right up to 331 (moderate wave energy). That’s *good* surf. Clean, glassy conditions on a proper, rideable swell. That’s your first standout.
The Friday morning after that, the 28th, the swell jumps to a massive 10ft from the WNW with a 12-second period. The energy reading is a whopping 2697 – that’s very strong. But for Grande-Plage, that’s just too much. It’s blown out with a cross-onshore wind, and it’s going to be a washing machine. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, even for them, it’s likely messy. This setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Stick with me though. Saturday morning the 29th of August is a beauty. We drop back to a still-big 7ft from the WNW, but the wind goes glassy again. The energy is still a solid 788. That’s “very good surf conditions” right there. A bit of a wave for the experienced crew, but the clean conditions will make it a special session.
Sunday the 30th of August morning is another bright spot. A clean, offshore E wind at 3 mph works with a 5ft NW swell (9 seconds, energy 367). That’s a “good surf” call. The water temp is 76°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus.
After the 30th, things start to fade again. Monday the 31st morning is ridable but ordinary, and then we hit another quiet stretch from the 1st of September through to the 4th. The waves are small, the wind is a problem, and it’s just not on.
Don’t give up hope. Look ahead to Saturday the 5th of September. We get a clean 5ft NW swell with ENE offshore wind (energy 382). That’s a “good surf” call again, and it’s a full week away, so it’s promising but less certain.
And finally, for the real patient ones, Sunday the 6th of September morning is shaping up to be a treat. A 5ft swell from the NW with glassy, calm conditions. The energy is 432. That’s another “good surf” outlook. The afternoon goes onshore, so get your early morning session in.
We’ve also got Monday the 7th of September looking big, with a 8ft, 12-second swell from the NW. The energy is 1728! But the wind is howling onshore, so it’ll be a messy, big, brute of a day. Again, more for the kites than the paddle crew, unless you’re a real charger.
Hang in there. The waits are worth it for those glassy windows.
