The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be real about this one. We’re looking at a pretty flat and dismal stretch of weather for Ilbaritz - Bora Bora for the next week and a half. The water temp is sitting at a warm 77°, which is a massive 7° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real anomaly, but it doesn’t mean much when there’s nothing to ride.
The first week is a washout. From Friday, the 17th, right through to the end of July, the surf is tiny and the conditions are ordinary. We’re talking waves under 3 feet for the most part, with a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind messing things up. The combined energy is weak, often under 100, and the swell periods are short, so there’s no power behind it. It’s a grind. Even the glassy mornings on the 21st and 25th only offer up knee-high junk with no push. Honestly, it’s a long stretch of days with nothing worth paddling out for.
We do have a glimmer of hope on the 31st of July. That Friday morning is a standout. The wind goes glassy from the southeast, and we’ve got a solid 8ft groundswell rolling in from the northwest with an 11-second period. The combined energy is a strong 1473, so there’s real power here. This is a proper reef break, so that long-period NW swell will wrap in nicely. It’s a big wave though – over 8 feet, so this is strictly for the experienced crew. The crowd factor says “often”, so you’ll have company, but for a set-up like this, it’s worth it.
The day before, on the 30th of July, is also worth a mention. The afternoon has 8ft from the NW, but with a cross-onshore wind and an 11-second period, it’s a bit rougher. The morning of the 30th is an option for experts too, with 8ft, but the period is shorter at 9 seconds, making it less clean.
After the 31st, the swell drops off quickly into August, with the 1st showing a 5ft morning that’s messy and onshore. So, the one true standout is the morning of Friday, the 31st of July. Set your alarms for that one.
Rusty out.
