The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty.
Honestly, for the next week and a half, we’re looking at a pretty flat spell here at La Sauzaie. The first recommendation doesn’t pop up until Tuesday, the 1st of September, so that’s a solid eight or nine days of barely a ripple to work with. It’s one of those periods where you’re better off waxing the longboard and just enjoying the sun, because the surf is pretty much a no-go.
When things finally do wake up, it’s not exactly a clean start. On Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, the swell pushes up to around 6 ft from the West, with a period of 10 seconds and a healthy combined energy of 668. That’s got some push to it. But the wind will be blowing from the SSW at 16 mph, which is a moderate cross-onshore, making things choppy. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing that morning. By the afternoon, the swell jumps a bit more to 7 ft from the West, with the energy going through the roof at 1721. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which feels about average for this time of year, but we’re dealing with strong cross-onshore wind from the South at 12 mph. That’s big, messy power. This is definitely expert-only territory.
Wednesday, the 2nd of September, keeps the energy up. Morning sees 6 ft from the West with an 11-second period and a combined energy of 1371. That longer period suggests better-shaped waves, but the wind is still a moderate cross-onshore from the South at 12 mph, keeping the surface messy. Afternoon drops to 5 ft from the West with a period of 10 seconds and energy of 502, but we get onshore wind from the SW. The quality is marginal at best.
If I had to pick the one standout here, it would be the Tuesday afternoon session on the 1st of September. Solid 7 ft West swell with that huge energy reading of 1721. For a reef break exposed to a WSW optimum, that’s plenty of juice. But the South wind is going to chop it up. It could be a wild, challenging session for experts only, and it won’t be clean. If that cross-onshore backs off or swings anywhere offshore, you’d have a real gem. But right now, it’s a powerful, gnarly mess.
So, hang tight for the next week. The surf returns big and raw on the 1st of September, but don’t expect any glassy perfection—it’s going to be a battle.
Rusty.
