Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here again, this time in feet and miles per hour.
Let’s be real about La Sauzaie. We’ve got a full 16-day window, but the surf is basically flat for the vast majority of it. Wave heights are tiny, mostly 1ft to 2ft, with the biggest swell showing up right at the end, hitting 3ft to 4ft on the 21st of July. The problem is, even when there’s a little bump in size, the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the combined swell energy is weak, with values barely cracking 100 (26 to 104) only at the very end. For the first two weeks, the energy sits in the low double digits to 70s. That’s not much to work with.
For the first week and a half, from July 6th right through to the 18th, it’s a real grind. The swell is small, period is short (under 10 seconds), and most sessions are spoiled by cross-onshore or onshore winds. You’ll see a few moments of clean conditions, like Tuesday morning the 7th with glassy wind, or Wednesday morning the 8th with a light cross-offshore breeze, but even then, the swell is only 1ft. That’s better for a float than a ride. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year.
There’s one small window that offers the best of a bad lot. On Tuesday morning, July 21st, we see the swell nudge up to 3ft from the WNW with a period of 6 seconds. The wind is cross-on from the West at 12 mph, which is not ideal, but the combined energy finally hits 77, showing a bit more push. Then Tuesday afternoon sees the swell peak at 4ft from the WNW, with the period still at 6 seconds and energy at 104. The wind stays cross-on from the West at 16 mph, so it’ll be choppy, but for an exposed reef break like La Sauzaie, this is the only time the surf is even close to rideable for an intermediate. Don’t expect any kind of quality; the report says “poor surf conditions” throughout.
That’s it. Some weeks with nothing, then a few hours of mediocre, choppy waves on the 21st. With such light swell and persistent onshore flow, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the forecast. Keep an eye on it, but don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
