The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on the next couple of weeks at La Sauzaie. Gotta be honest, it's a lean stretch. Most of it is small, weak swell, and the wind doesn't give us much of a break. There's a bunch of energy showing up in the second week, but the wind spoils the fun.
Right now, Tuesday the 11th, it's flat. Just 1 foot from the WSW with a short period of 7 seconds. The energy reading is a weak 19. A light east wind keeps it looking clean, but there's nothing to ride.
Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th are more of the same: small, confused swells and cross-shore winds messing up the surface. Water temp is 68°F, right on the money for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Friday morning the 14th is the first time we get a shot. There's a 2 foot swell from the west with a 10-second period, giving it some shape. The energy is 89, not huge, but with a light north wind blowing cross-offshore, the surface will be glassy. That's your window. The afternoon gets ruined by a 30 km/h northwesterly that'll chop it all up.
Saturday the 15th is a carbon copy: a small, clean morning with a 3 foot swell from the WNW (energy 117), then the wind switches onshore and kills it. This whole first week is a game of hoping for the morning glass-off.
Check out the end of the forecast. Sunday the 23rd afternoon shows a 5 foot swell from the west with a 9-second period. The energy jumps way up to 539, which means there's a lot of water moving. But the wind is blowing onshore at 20 km/h from the WSW. That's going to make it a lumpy, blown-out mess.
Monday the 24th has a 5 foot swell, energy at 436, but a strong 35 km/h cross-shore wind from the WNW will trash it. For a reef like La Sauzaie, that kind of wind and size is more for the kite surfers than us paddle guys. The period is around 9 to 10 seconds, so it's not that super-long groundswell that just marches past, but the wind is the problem.
If I'm picking the absolute best of a grim bunch, it's that Friday morning the 21st. A clean 2 foot swell from the west, a 9-second period, and a light offshore breeze from the ESE. The energy is a moderate 70. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is the highest praise we get all forecast. It'll be a slow, clean day for a log.
There's a lot of days in between with nothing. The ocean sends some size at the end, but the wind slams the door every time.
Hang in there. Rusty.
