The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Right, straight up – it's a tough start for La Sauzaie. We've got a real barren patch to work through before anything decent shows its face. The first week or so is pretty much a write-off for any kind of quality surf.
We kick off with Friday the 21st of August, and honestly, you can leave the board in the car. A cross-shore breeze from the NW at 12 mph is messing up a 4ft W swell (217 energy). It's just messy. This poor run keeps rolling right through the next week. We get some clean conditions on the Saturday morning the 22nd with an easterly cross-offshore wind, but the swell is tiny at 3ft and short period of 8 seconds – just not enough push. The Sunday and Monday offer clean-looking surf from a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell height is barely a ripple at 0.7ft to 1ft. You'd be floating around for nothing.
There's a spike in swell around the 27th and 28th of August, with a big 8ft WSW swell on the Friday morning the 28th, pumping out a massive 1044 energy reading. But don't get excited. That's coupled with a strong onshore or cross-onshore wind. It's going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. That's more of a kite-surfing session than a paddle session.
Eventually, we get a glimmer of hope. After a long, quiet slog, the first decent look comes on Saturday the 5th of September. It’s a morning session that’s finally worth setting the alarm for.
That Saturday morning, the 5th of September, is the standout. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the WNW, and the period stretches out to a nice 9 seconds – a proper little groundswell that should offer some shape. But the real winner is the wind: glassy. Dead calm. That’s a major positive for La Sauzaie. It’s going to be clean, lined up, and a joy to surf. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. Don’t expect a crowd-free zone, as it’s a spot that can be busy, but for this kind of quality glass, it'll be worth sharing a few waves.
Rusty.
