The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's cookin' for the St Jean de Luz – Ciboure area over the next couple of weeks.

Straight up, this is a quiet stretch. There’s a little pulse of small, clean surf right at the beginning, but then it mostly goes flat or messy for a long, long time. You’ll have a gap from the 31st of August all the way through to the 13th of September with nothing worth paddling out for.

The best of the whole run is gonna be Saturday morning, August 29th, at St Jean de Luz – Ciboure. We’ve got a small but juicy 3ft swell rolling in from the WNW, with a period around 9 seconds. The real star of the show is the wind: dead calm, glassy as a mirror, with just a slight air from the ESE. The water is a balmy 75°, and that’s a good 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is pretty wild. The combined wave energy is sitting at a moderate 139, and with those clean conditions, the little lines will actually have some shape. It’s a beginner-friendly wave at that size, but the inconsistent nature of the break means you’ll be waiting between sets. Still, for the quality of the conditions, it’s the standout.

Sunday morning the 30th will also be clean with a glassy 2ft from the NW, but it’s even weaker. After that, the wind shifts onshore in the afternoons and the swell just drops away.

From Tuesday, September 1st, onwards, the swell dies hard. We’re talking 1ft to 2ft for days, and even when the wind goes glassy in the mornings, there’s just no energy behind it. By the second week, from September 4th to the 13th, the wave energy drops into the double digits (less than 100), and the combo of small swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore wind means it's a write-off. Honestly, for a beach/jetty setup like this, the conditions look more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddler during that whole stretch.

Bottom line: if you can get out on Saturday the 29th or maybe Sunday the 30th morning, you’ll score some clean but small waves. After that, it’s a long dry spell. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking like a waiting game.

Rusty.
