The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's cookin' in the water.
Honestly, it's a rough stretch ahead for the Saint-Jean-de-Luz area. The next week and a half is looking pretty bleak for any decent waves. We're looking at tiny, weak swell and mostly poor conditions. There's a real dry spell from now until the 25th of July, with next to nothing to get excited about. The surf just isn't there.
Looking at the boards, around the 24th of July we see a pulse of energy come through, with a combined swell energy of (135) – that's a proper jump. But the wind is cross-on, so it's gonna be choppy and messy, not a good time. The real standout, the only one worth circling on the calendar, is the 25th of July. That morning, we get a glassy start with a 1ft, long-period groundswell rolling in from the NW at 12 seconds. That's a proper pulse of energy, and with the wind glassing off, the conditions could be clean. If you're keen, the afternoon session at St Jean de Luz - Ciboure looks even cleaner with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE, offshore for that break.
The water temperature is pretty average for this time of year, so no thermal shock. Just a slow, drawn-out wait for something to happen. It's a tough outlook, but forecasts can change, and that 25th might just be the window you need.
Rusty.
