Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest with you, it’s a bit of a tough stretch for surfers around here. The swell is coming and going, but the wind is just never quite playing ball for a clean, proper wave face.
We’re looking at Arrieta, a sheltered reef that’s pretty inconsistent at the best of times, and it really needs a good N direction to get the optimum swell. Over the first week, the waves are small, up to about 4ft on Sunday 12th July, but the wind is always cross-off or cross-shore, so it’s choppy and messy. Even Sunday morning, the biggest of the early lot at 4ft, has a cross-shore breeze making it lumpy. The combined swell energy creeps up to 313 (moderate) on that Sunday, but the poor surf conditions just don’t let up. There’s a long gap with no real recommendation here.
The real story starts around the end of the second week. From Thursday 23rd July, we see the swell really start to push. The morning of the 23rd brings 8ft swell from the NNE with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to 723 (strong). The wind is a clean cross-off, so the waves will look clean, but at 8ft and picking up, this is getting into expert-only territory. The standout potential is the morning of Friday 24th July. We’ve got a solid 12ft swell from the NNE, with a long period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1693 (very strong wave energy). The wind is a clean cross-off again. This is the biggest and most powerful swell of the window, but it’s a long way out, so take it with a pinch of salt. For a reef that’s often inconsistent, if it fires, it’ll be a big, powerful wave. The crowd potential here is listed as “sometimes,” so you might not have a crowd, but it’s a heavy, big wave setup for sure. Anything over 8ft is for experts only, and this is well over that. The water temperature is running about average for the time of year.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The second week, the swell builds, with the 24th and 25th of July showing the biggest potential – a true, heavy groundswell event. But it’s a promise, not a guarantee, and only for the experienced crew.
