Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Arrieta over the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – the immediate outlook is a bit of a bummer. We’ve got a flat spell kickin’ things off. Saturday the 11th is barely a ripple with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the NNW, and the energy is just a whisper at 36. It’s a no-go. The water is a warm 72°, which is about average for this time of year, so at least a dip would be nice, but there’s no wave to ride.
The whole first week is a write-off for any decent surf. We see waves come up a bit, hitting 3ft by Sunday the 12th, but the wind is all wrong – cross-shore and bumpy. The energy picks up a little (253 on Sunday), but it’s messy. It’s a classic case of “poor surf conditions” day after day, with lumpy, choppy seas. By Thursday the 16th, we get a bit more size at 6ft, but the wind is howling from the NNE at 22 mph, just cross-shore junk. This whole stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, I’m afraid.
Now, if you’ve got patience, the second week holds some promise, but it’s a long way off. Around Monday the 20th of July, the swell starts to really build. We’re looking at 6ft to 6ft from the north, with the energy jumping up into the 500s and 600s. The wind is still fresh, but it’s a cross-off direction, which cleans it up a bit. The real standout, though, looks to be Wednesday the 22nd of July. The swell is gonna be a solid 8ft from the NNE, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s proper energy, with a combined energy reading of 1142. That’s a heavy, powerful wave. But hear me now: that’s expert territory. For a reef break like Arrieta that’s rated “advanced” and is “inconsistent,” this is a serious session. The wind is still cross-shore, so it’s not gonna be perfect, but the power is there. After that, it eases back down towards the 5ft range by the 24th and 25th, with clean cross-off winds, which would be a nice, manageable size for the more experienced surfers.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a total washout. The best bet is to wait for that big pulse around the 22nd of July, but that’s a big, powerful swell for experts only. If the crowds are “sometimes” there, this is when they’ll show up. For the rest of us, the cleaner, smaller days at the end of the month, around the 24th and 25th, are the more realistic target, though still a week and a half away.
Rusty.
