The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and frustrating for this stretch of coast. The swell is showing up, but it’s weak, short-period windswell, and the wind is just constantly chopping it up. We’re looking at a lot of shorebreak and crumbly walls, not the clean lines we’re after.

The water here is running about 74°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.

The first week is a write-off. From Friday, August 7th, through to the 16th, we’ve got waist-high dribble with periods of 6 to 8 seconds. The wind is a persistent cross-off breeze, blowing 15 to 25 mph, which is just ruining any chance of a decent face. The combined swell energy during this stretch is weak to moderate, mostly in the low to mid hundreds (237, 240, 284, 285), and it just doesn't have the power to push through the chop. This is a period to get other things done, honestly.

The only real glimmer in the whole window is on Monday, August 17th. The wind finally drops to a light offshore breeze from the NNW at just 6 mph. The swell is still small, around 3ft from the NNE with an 8-second period, but with that clean, glassy surface, it could be surfable. The combined energy is only 102, so it’s weak, but for a patient surfer on a longboard, there might be a few fun, crumbly ones. It’s still not a standout, just the least bad option.

After that, it’s back to the grind. From the 18th onwards, the wind picks right back up, and we're back to junky conditions. The swell stays small and weak, and by the 19th, it just about disappears entirely. That’s a huge gap of nothingness through to the end of the window. The forecasts can change, but I’d be looking at other hobbies for a while.

This is Playa Bastián (Costa Teguise), and it’s an inconsistent reef break, so a blank run like this isn't exactly a surprise. Hopefully, the models change their tune, but for now, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Rusty, out.
