Punta Blanca - k16 Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, the first week and a half is a bit of a desert. We’ve got a few days of surfable but very ordinary conditions, but nothing that’s really going to get the heart pumping. The real story – the one that has me paying attention – kicks off around the 11th of August. There’s a solid pulse of energy showing up, and it’s all pointing to Punta Blanca - k16.

This spot is a consistent, advanced reef break that’s exposed to the west. The water temp is sitting at 74°F which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit.

For the first few days, Thursday the 30th of July has some small, rideable waves with a NNE swell of 4ft to 4ft and a short period of 6 seconds. The wind is cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but the energy is weak (112-139). Not a standout, just something to wet the line. Friday the 31st of July morning is a tease – glassy conditions with a tiny 1.0ft NW groundswell (11 seconds), but it’s just too small.

The run from the 1st of August to the 10th of August is mostly poor. We get some cross-off winds and clean conditions, but the swell heights hover around 1ft to 3ft and the energy is low. There’s a brief uptick on the 3rd of August with a 4ft NNE swell and a clean cross-off breeze, but the period is short at 7 seconds and the energy is still moderate (184). It’s a long, flat stretch.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. From the 11th of August, a new swell arrives. On Tuesday the 11th, the morning shows a 6ft NNE swell with a short 6-second period and moderate-strong energy (302). The wind is cross, so it’s not perfect, but the size is there. By Wednesday the 12th of August, we’re seeing 7ft to 7ft NNE swells, still short period (8 seconds), with strong energy (528-562). The wind is still cross, which leaves it a bit choppy – it’s marginal, but the power is building.

The standout is the morning of Thursday the 13th of August. That’s the one. We’ve got a solid 7ft NNE swell, a period of 8 seconds, and strong energy (597). The wind shifts to a cross-off breeze from the NNE at 15 km/h, promising clean conditions. This is the best on offer. The swell is over 7ft, so this is for experienced surfers only – it’s going to be powerful and heavy over that reef. It’s not a perfect long-period groundswell, but the energy and the clean wind make it the clear winner. Expect crowds here, as it’s a spot that gets attention.

The swell hangs around into the afternoon of the 13th (6ft, cross wind) and the morning of the 14th (5ft), but the wind turns cross again, making it less appealing.

So, the call is: endure the flat spell and keep your eyes on Thursday the 13th of August. That morning at Punta Blanca - k16 is where you want to be. It’s a long way out, so the forecast could shift, but right now, it’s got the juice.
