The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Right now, the surf at Igueste de San Andrés is looking pretty ordinary. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s a flicker of hope later on.
The first few days, from the 19th through the 24th, are mostly a write-off. The swell is small, with the combined energy hanging around 140 to 224 (moderate), and the period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds. That’s weak, choppy stuff. The wind is offshore for much of that time, which keeps the surface clean, but the waves themselves are just poor. There’s no real power or shape. You’ll be scratching for scraps.
Then we hit the 25th. The swell picks up to 6 ft from the NE, but the period is still short at 8 seconds, and the wind swings cross-offshore. The combined energy jumps to 368 (moderate), but the conditions are still rated as poor. It’s a bit of a tease. The 26th and 27th are similar: bigger swell, hitting 6 ft to 7 ft, but the wind stays cross-off, and the period is short. The energy climbs to 396 and then 485 (moderate), but it’s not clean enough to get excited about. For a reef break like this, you want that offshore wind, and we’re just not getting it consistently.
The real standout in this whole forecast is the 28th of August. Friday afternoon, the swell hits 8 ft from the NE, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind finally goes fully offshore at 30 km/h. The combined energy is a solid 928 (strong). That’s a proper push. But, and this is a big but, that’s a hefty swell for a reef. Over 8 ft is expert territory, and 8 ft is right on the edge. It’s not for beginners. The direction is NE, which is close to the optimum swell direction for this spot, so it should wrap in nicely. The wave comment says "marginal surf" but with that offshore wind and the energy, it’s the best on offer.
The 29th drops back to 6 ft from the NNE, with offshore wind again. The energy is 667 (moderate). It’s still surfable, but not the same punch as the 28th.
Then things get interesting at the very end. On the 2nd of September, Wednesday afternoon, the swell is 4 ft from the N, but the period stretches out to 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is 694 (moderate), and the wind is offshore. The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions." The 3rd of September holds that promise too, with 4 ft from the N, 10-second period, offshore wind, and 653 energy. That’s a long-range standout, so take it with a pinch of salt, but it’s the cleanest looking window in the whole forecast.
Water temperature? No data given, so I can’t say if it’s warm or cold for the time of year.
Crowds at Igueste de San Andrés? The guidance says "often," so expect company, especially if the surf is good.
The gap between the poor surf of the first week and the better conditions on the 28th and then again on the 2nd of September is a long one. It’s a waiting game.
If you’re an expert, the 28th of August is your day. For everyone else, hold out for the 2nd and 3rd of September. That’s the one to circle.
Rusty.
