The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for La Nora.
We’re in for a bit of a slow burn to start. The first week or so is pretty quiet, with a lot of small, weak, or messy conditions. You’ll be waiting a good while before anything really gets going. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Thursday, the 20th of August, and even then it’s touch and go.
The standout period is clearly the beginning of September. That’s where the real energy finally arrives.
Let’s break it down. The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th are tiny, with swells of only 0.7 ft to 2 ft, and the wind is all over the place. The combined energy is a measly 9 to 38, so don’t even bother.
Thursday the 20th of August shows a little pulse. The morning is still a bit marginal, but by Thursday afternoon we get a nice little glass-off with a 3 ft swell from the NW at 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 303 (moderate), and the conditions are clean. It’s small, but it’s the best we’ve seen.
Friday the 21st of August holds onto that. Glassy conditions again in the morning with a 4 ft NW swell and a solid 420 (moderate) energy reading. The afternoon gets a bit messy with rain showers and onshore wind, so grab the morning session.
We get a bit more of the same through the weekend and into the next week. Mostly small, inconsistent waves with short periods (6-8 seconds), and the energy rarely gets above 200. A few glassy windows here and there, like Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, but with swell heights around 2 ft to 4 ft and weak energy, it’s really just a longboard or a funboard kind of zone.
Now, the real story is the ramp-up at the very end of the month. Tuesday the 1st of September is the day to circle on your calendar. We’ve got a solid 5 ft swell from the NNW, with a very nice 11-second period. The combined energy is a strong 637, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 72°F.
And then Wednesday the 2nd of September looks even better, if you can get away. The swell is 6 ft from the NNW, the period stretches out to a lovely 12 seconds, and the energy is a powerful 782. The wind is glassy in the morning. This is proper groundswell, and it’ll have some real push to it. The afternoon wind looks like it’ll chop it up, so be an early bird.
The Pick: For the best of the best, look no further than Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. That 6 ft NNW swell with a 12-second period, near 800 energy, and glassy conditions at La Nora is the clear winner. The Tuesday morning before it is a very close second, with that clean cross-offshore wind. The 5 ft to 6 ft range is solid intermediate territory, but it’s got enough power to keep the experts happy too. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a nice bonus.
Stay patient, and that first week of September will pay off.
Rusty.
