The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wetties, this is Rusty.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start here for a while at La Nora. The first real sign of life that’s worth getting even a little bit excited about doesn’t show up until Monday morning, July 20th, but even then, the conditions are a bit average. This is a beach and point setup that's exposed to the swell, with an optimum direction from the NNW, so we have to wait for that magic alignment.
From now until then, it's pretty flat and messy. Saturday and Sunday are mostly glassy but with tiny knee-high slop and no energy – the combined energy is just 7 and 18 on those mornings, respectively, which is basically flat. The wind is light off the land though, which is a tease.
Monday the 20th sees a pulse of swell appear, around 5ft from the NNE, with combined energy jumping to 238. That's a moderate amount of juice, but the wind is cross-onshore and it's a short period 7-second wave. Tuesday looks similar with a bit more size (7ft) but that cross-shore wind will wreck it. Things calm down Wednesday and Thursday, with a very promising glassy window on Thursday morning, July 23rd. The swell is only 3ft from the NNE though, and the energy (60) is weak.
The best bet in the whole 16-day window is Monday, July 27th. This is the standout. Monday morning we’ve got glassy winds from the NNE, and a solid 4ft groundswell from the NW with a period of 9 seconds, combined energy of 343 – that's moderate to strong. The wind will be glassy, meaning clean-as-a-whistle conditions. It’s a fairly consistent break, but do keep in mind crowds can be an issue here as it’s often packed. This is the session to point the car towards La Nora.
Beyond that, there’s a good-looking window around Wednesday, July 29th morning, with 4ft from the NNW and a longer 11-second period, combined energy of 684. That is strong wave energy, and the swell direction is a perfect match for the break. The wind is light cross-shore, which should offer some clean walls. It’s a bit further out, so keep an eye on it, but it looks promising for a point break like this.
The rest of the period fades out after that into weaker, wind-affected surf. The water temp feels about normal for the time of year here. So, don't sleep on that Monday the 27th morning – that's the one.
