The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at the stretch ahead for La Nora. To be honest, it’s a slow start, and we’ve got a long wait for anything that’ll really get the heart pumpin’. The first week or so is mostly tiny, messy, or blown out, with a real highlight only showin’ up late in the second week.
Right now, through Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th, it’s flat or ankle-slopers – 0.7ft to 1ft at best, with cross or cross-onshore winds. Not worth wettin’ a suit. Sunday the 19th morning, we finally see a bit of life with a 2ft swell from the N, and the wind goes glassy. It’s small, but that glassy conditions are a treat. The combined energy is weak (23), so it’s a learner’s session or a longboard cruise.
Monday the 20th sees the swell bump to 5ft from the NNE in the morning, with energy climbin’ to 198 (moderate). But the wind is onshore, messin’ it up. By afternoon, it’s 6ft but hammered by a 25 km/h cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and ugly. Tuesday the 21st is similar – 5ft in the mornin’ with light cross-shore, but the energy is moderate (206) and the wind turns messy again in the arvo. Not great.
The first real standout in this whole outlook lands on Wednesday the 22nd of July, early. The swell drops to 4ft from the NNE, but the wind goes glassy. The combined energy is moderate (137). That’s a clean, cruisy morning with some fun little waves. If you’re keen, get out there early – it’s the best of the first week, but it’s still ordinary conditions overall.
We then hit a flat spell from Thursday the 23rd through Monday the 27th, with waves mostly under 3ft and cross-on or onshore winds. A few glassy mornings on the 24th and 25th, but the swell is tiny (3ft to 3ft) and energy is weak (46 to 72). Honestly, it’s a bit of a dead zone.
Now, the real promise shows up on Tuesday the 28th of July. The afternoon brings a 3ft swell from the NNW, but the period jumps to 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, with very long period. The combined energy spikes to 426 (strong). The wind is a light cross-onshore, which is a bit of a shame, but that swell is noteworthy. It’s a point and beach setup, so the long period might make it a bit straight at the beach, but the point could hold it nicely. This is the standout of the entire forecast.
Wednesday the 29th morning keeps that energy goin’ with 4ft from the NNW, 11-second period, and energy at 366 (strong). Winds are still light cross-onshore. It’s marginal, but it’s the best run of swell we’ve seen. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st are still in the mix, with 4ft to 4ft from the NNW, but the wind is a cross-on or onshore, so it’s messy. The energy holds strong (257-391), so there’s push, but the quality is poor.
Saturday the 1st of August, the final morning, shows a 3ft from the NNW with glassy conditions and weak energy (130). It’s surfable but ordinary.
So, if you’re waitin’ for the best, it’s Tuesday the 28th of July afternoon and Wednesday the 29th morning. That long-period NNW groundswell with strong energy (426 and 366) is the real highlight. The wind is a bit annoying, but that’s the pick of the crop. Everything else is small, weak, or blown out. For the beginners, the swell doesn’t get over 5ft much, so it’s not too big, but it’s also not great. For the experts, that 28th arvo has a bit of grunt.
Rusty.
