The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here with the imperial take. Same story, different numbers.
Water temp is sitting at about 70°, which is way warmer than usual for the season, so you’re good in a shorty or just a rashguard.
The start is a dead loss. From Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 20th, it’s all poor surf – tiny waves, mostly under 3 ft, with short, weak periods and onshore or cross-onshore wind. That’s a full five-day gap. No recommendations worth a damn. Wave energy is all under 100 (weak) for most of it, not even hitting moderate until Sunday afternoon.
Monday the 20th afternoon sees the swell push to about 5 ft from the ENE, but with a short 6-second period and 15 mph cross-shore wind, it’s a messy cross-chop. Energy is moderate at 373, but quality is zero.
Tuesday the 21st stays rough – 5 ft in the morning with cross-shore wind, still only marginal.
The one true standout is Wednesday morning the 22nd of July. Swell drops to 5 ft from the NNE, 7-second period, but the wind goes dead calm and glassy. That’s the call. Clean, knee-to-waist high fun for intermediates. Wave energy is 172 (moderate). Get out early because the wind goes cross-onshore by afternoon.
After that, it’s back to small and weak through the end of the month. A few glassy mornings on the 23rd, 24th, and 26th, but swell is under 4 ft, and energy is low (under 203). Not worth the effort.
The last chance is Friday the 31st morning – glassy again with 3 ft NW swell and a better 9-second period (groundswell), energy at 175. It’s surfable but nothing special. With longer period, it might straighten out at a beach break, but La Nora’s point section could work.
The best bet: Wednesday morning the 22nd of July. Glassy, clean, fun-sized.
Rusty.
