Alright, this is Rusty. Let me look at what’s happening at Karramarro over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you—this is a rough stretch. Karramarro is an advanced-level point break that normally needs a decent NW swell to get going, and it’s inconsistent at best. Over the next 16 days, the wave energy is just not showing up. The water temperature here is clocking in at 76°F, which is a whopping 8°F warmer than usual for the time of year—that’s very unusual, so you’ll be feeling that warm bath.
From July 7th through to July 20th, we’re looking at a solid two-week gap with no real surf to recommend. Swell heights are tiny, mostly between 0.7 ft and 3 ft, and the combined wave energy is consistently weak—most readings are under 100 (even down to 9) with only a couple of brief moderate spikes. The swell direction is mostly NW or WNW, which is what this spot wants, but the period is all over the place, from a short 4 seconds up to 11 seconds, and the size is just not enough to push through. Winds are often light and cross or glassy—which would be beautiful for clean waves—but there’s nothing to ride. It’s a classic case of surfable conditions with no surf.
There is a little spike toward the end of the period. On July 20th, Monday afternoon, the swell jumps to 5 ft from the WNW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 204 (moderate wave energy), and the wind is cross-offshore, giving us clean conditions. But the period is short (less than 8 seconds), so it’s windswell, and the size at 5 ft is getting up there—could be a bit much for beginners. The problem is the consistency: this spot is already inconsistent, and the short period at a point break won’t produce the same quality as a longer-period groundswell. Still, if you’re an experienced surfer and you get lucky with a set, it’s the only real window in the whole outlook.
The rest of July 21st and 22nd drop back down to smaller, weaker swell, so don’t get too excited. For kite surfers, the stronger wind and bigger swell on the 20th afternoon might be worth a look, but for paddle surfing, Karramarro is mostly a write-off across this entire forecast.
Rusty, signing off.
