The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got my eye on the charts for this stretch. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the second half of the window is looking like a proper session.
The forecast opens on Thursday, August 20th, with some decent energy already in the water at Karramarro. We’re looking at a 4ft NW swell, with a 11-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The wind is light and cross-off from the west, which means clean, lined-up waves. The water is sitting at 76°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so you’ll be able to stay in a spring suit without a problem. The combined energy is solid at 377 (moderate), so there’s some push behind it. This is a good spot for advanced surfers, and it’s inconsistent, so expect to wait for the sets, but the quality is there. This is a point break, and that NW swell is right in the sweet spot, so it’ll be drawing in nicely.
Friday morning, August 21st, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the NW, with a 10-second period. The energy jumps to 667 (strong), and the wind is still light and cross-off. This is the standout of the first week – clean, punchy, and a proper size. It’s rain showers overhead, but that’s fine, the waves will be worth it. Thursday’s session was good, but Friday morning is the one to circle.
The weekend falls off hard. Saturday and Sunday are a write-off, with tiny, weak swells and onshore winds. The energy drops to 58 on Sunday, which is barely a ripple. That’s a blank run of a few days, so save your energy.
We get a bit of a pulse back on Wednesday, August 26th, with a 3ft WNW swell, but the wind is moderate and the conditions are just ordinary. Not worth paddling out for.
Then, the real gold comes on Thursday, August 27th. The morning starts with a glassy 5ft NW swell, and the wind is dead calm. That’s a session where the ocean is a mirror. The energy is 303 (moderate). Then Thursday afternoon, it gets even better. The swell jumps to 7ft from the WNW, the wind goes offshore at 6 mph, and the energy rockets to 739 (strong). This is a serious wave – too big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s going to be firing. The offshore wind is a major positive, so you’re looking at clean, hollow walls.
Friday morning, August 28th, stays good with a 6ft NW swell and light offshore winds, energy at 625 (strong). The crowds are possible at this spot, so get there early.
The following week keeps the goods coming. Tuesday, September 1st, is a standout. The morning is dead calm, glassy, with a 6ft NW swell and a 11-second period, energy at 743 (strong). This is the best of the whole run. It’s a long period groundswell, which will be perfect for this point break, giving it shape and power. The sets will be spaced out, but the paddle out is easy.
After that, the swell slowly fades through the first week of September. Wednesday, September 2nd, still holds a clean 6ft, but by Thursday and Friday it drops to ankle-snappers. The run is over by then.
So, the two top picks: Thursday morning, August 27th, for the glassy, clean conditions, and Tuesday morning, September 1st, for the biggest, cleanest groundswell of the period. The long-range one is promising, but you know how it goes – keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
