The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got.
The next couple of weeks are a proper mixed bag at Karramarro. We start off with a decent push of swell, then it drops right away for a long stretch of tiny or poor waves, before a promising run kicks off at the end of the month.
Friday 21st August is where it all starts. We’ve got a solid 6ft swell rolling in from the NW with a 10-second period, so it’s got some decent energy (667). The wind is a cross-offshore, and the water is way warmer than normal for this time of year – the anomaly is over three degrees up. That morning session is looking very clean and well worth a paddle. The afternoon gets a bit messy with cross-shore wind and some chop sneaking in, so the early bird gets the wave here.
Then it all turns south. From Saturday 22nd right through to Friday 28th August, it’s a long quiet stretch. The swell drops below 3ft for days, with onshore wind and only tiny scraps of energy (as low as 8 in the combined energy). This spot is inconsistent at the best of times, but this run feels dry. You’d be better off doing something else for that whole week.
The real standout window is the final weekend. Saturday 29th August is the peak of the whole outlook. You’re looking at 6ft of NW swell with a 10-second period and a massive 724 in the energy bracket – that’s strong, punchy stuff. The morning has a light southerly making it cross-offshore, and the waves are clean as can be. This is an advanced break, and at that size with that energy, it’s definitely for experienced surfers only. You’ll want to get out early because the crowd factor is ‘often’ at Karramarro, so expect company if you’re late.
Sunday 30th August is another beauty. The swell drops a touch to 4ft, but the wind goes glassy in the morning from the east-northeast. With that 9-second groundswell and 300 energy, you’re looking at clean, fun-shaped waves that’ll be much more user-friendly than the day before. A top pick for the intermediate surfer.
There’s a small pulse on Wednesday 2nd September with 5ft from the WNW, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the energy is only moderate (242). It’s surfable but ordinary. After that, the swell fades out again.
So, to wrap it up: Friday morning 21st August is worth a look, but the true standouts are Saturday 29th August for the big, powerful waves (experts only), and Sunday 30th August for the glassy, clean conditions that’ll suit a wider crew.
Rusty.
