The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Karramarro. I gotta be straight with you, the next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and the first week is a proper write-off. We’re looking at a long dry spell, almost a full week of nothing worth paddling out for, from Sunday, July 19th, right through until late on the 28th. It’s one of those frustrating runs where the conditions just don’t line up, so don’t bother checking the cam until we’re into the second week.
The whole period is dominated by small, weak swell with poor scores. The only real light at the end of the tunnel, and I mean the *only* one, is the morning of Thursday, July 30th. That’s your standout. The wind goes glassy, the swell bumps up to a clean 5 ft from the NW, and the energy finally gets a bit of life. This is a point break, so it’s an advanced wave, and with crowds listed as ‘often’ you’ll have company, but for that one window, it’s going to be the best session of the whole fortnight. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The morning of Sunday, August 2nd, is a backup option. The swell is still 5 ft from the NW, but the key here is the glassy conditions in the morning. The energy is similar, and it’s a much better prospect than the rest of the garbage. But it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
The rest of the time? Forget it. We’ve got long periods of glassy conditions but with tiny, weak swell (like 0.7 ft to 2 ft) that’s barely a ripple. When the swell tries to build later in the month, it’s often marred by cross-onshore winds and short periods (7-9 seconds), which just makes for a messy, grovelly affair. The swell direction is mainly NW, which is spot on for the optimum, but it just doesn’t have the power or the clean wind to make it work.
So, bottom line: get your chores done this week, wait for the Thursday, July 30th glass-off, and then maybe the Sunday, August 2nd. Everything else is a flat, windy, or just plain ordinary mess.
Rusty.
