The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Zumaya (Playa de Itxurun). We’ve got a 16-day window, and it starts off a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some real promise waiting for us.
Right now, the water is sitting at a surprisingly warm 76°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus if you’re going in without a thick suit.
The first few days are a bit of a struggle. Thursday the 20th kicks off with a 4ft NW swell, but it’s got a cross wind and the energy is weak (377). The comment says marginal, and it feels that way. Friday and Saturday are similar – we’ve got some size on Friday morning with a 6ft NW swell, but the wind is dirty, and the energy is moderate (667). It’s not looking clean. Sunday the 23rd drops right off, with a tiny 2ft NW swell and hardly any energy (58). That’s a no-go.
We have a proper gap here. From Sunday the 23rd through to Tuesday the 25th, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, and the wind is all over the place. It’s a quiet patch.
Things start to perk up on Wednesday the 26th. The morning shows a 3ft WNW swell with offshore winds and clean conditions. The energy is still moderate (192), but it’s a sign of life. Thursday the 27th is where it gets interesting. The morning has a 5ft NW swell with light offshore winds and clean conditions. The energy is building (303). But the standout is Thursday afternoon: a 7ft WNW swell with light cross-offshore winds and clean conditions. The energy is strong (739), and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the one to circle. It’s a bit of size, so it’s more for the experienced crew, but it’s clean and has some grunt.
Friday the 28th morning keeps the momentum going with a 6ft NW swell and light cross-offshore winds. Clean again, and strong energy (625). The afternoon turns messy with a strong onshore, so get your session in early.
The next few days are a bit of a mix. Saturday the 29th morning has a 5ft NW swell with light cross-offshore winds, clean and good. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st both have glassy mornings with a 5ft NW swell. That’s clean, fun surf, perfect for a long session.
Then, the second big standout: Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning is glassy, with a 6ft NW swell that has a period of 11 seconds. The energy is strong (743), and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is a long period groundswell, so it’ll have some real push and shape, but it might be a bit walled-up at the beach break. Keep that in mind.
After that, the swell starts to fade. Wednesday the 2nd has a 6ft WNW swell, but the wind is cross and the energy is moderate (508). Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th drop off considerably, with tiny waves and poor conditions. The window closes out with a whimper.
So, the real highlights are the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August and the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. Both offer strong, clean swell with good energy. Get on it.
Rusty.
