The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

The next couple of weeks are looking pretty interesting at Double Mouth, with a real mix of clean glassy sessions and some raw, powerful swells coming through. The water is sitting at 67°F which is about 1°F cooler than the seasonal norm, so nothing too wild, just a touch of autumn chill creeping in.

We kick off on Sunday morning, the 19th of July, with a beautiful setup. The reef is handling a 4ft swell from the SE, with a nice 11-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the east at just 3 mph. The wave energy is moderate at 760, and trust me, the conditions are going to be silky smooth. This is a standout session for the week – clean, fun, and the kind of morning that makes you forget everything else. Sunday afternoon follows with a slightly bigger 6ft SE swell, still glassy, so you can milk that window all day.

Monday the 20th sees a big jump in size. Morning brings a 8ft SW swell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy rockets up to 2616. That’s a solid, powerful swell. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’s a bit lumpy, but for the experienced surfers, this is meaty and worth a paddle. Afternoon drops to 5ft from the SE with a long 12-second period, but the wind turns cross-onshore, so it gets a bit bumpy.

Tuesday the 21st is another glassy morning, with a 4ft SE swell and a 12-second period. The energy is 794 – moderate but clean. This is a sweet, user-friendly wave for intermediates. The long period means the sets will have some punch but plenty of time between them. Afternoon gets a bit weird with a 4ft SSW swell at a very long 15 seconds, but the wind is cross-onshore, so not as clean.

Wednesday the 22nd through Friday the 24th is a period of building, messy energy. The morning of the 24th of July is worth a mention: a 8ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, and the energy is a massive 3342. That’s a serious groundswell. The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s not perfect, but if you want size and power, that’s your window. Just be aware, a swell this long and big can make the reef do some weird things – it’s best for the experts.

The weekend of the 25th and 26th offers a bit of a mixed bag. Saturday morning is a 5ft SSW swell with a 15-second period, moderate energy at 1117, but the wind is cross-shore. Sunday the 26th morning is a gem: 4ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and glassy again. That’s another clean, low-stress session.

The last week of July starts to get a bit wild. Monday the 27th morning has a 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, energy at 1411, but the wind is light cross-shore. Then we hit a big, lumpy period from the 28th to the 30th with swells over 8ft and up to 12ft, with strong winds and a lot of cross-chop. The 29th of July morning has a 10ft ESE swell, 10-second period, and energy at 2739 – that’s a lot of water moving, but it’s going to be a rough, roped-in mess for paddle surfing. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a traditional surf.

The very end of the run, on the 2nd of August morning, is a real standout for the long-range forecast. We get a 6ft S swell, but the wind is offshore from the NNW at 9 mph. The energy is moderate at 625, but the wind is clean and the conditions are glassy. That’s a promising one, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.

Overall, the best on offer is that Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th morning windows, with the 24th of July for the big-wave crew. The 2nd of August is a long-range hope.

Rusty.
