The Lowdown
Alright folks, this is Rusty, and it’s been a weird stretch here for Mbotyi. We’ve got a 16-day forecast window, but you’ll be wanting to wait a bit. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, so settle in.
We kick off Friday the 21st with nothing worth paddling for. Tiny 1.3ft easterly windswell with a cross-on breeze. The next few days stay flat and messy, with a lot of light wind and not much push. It’s a proper gap of about 6 days of sub-par conditions. Saturday the 22nd morning shows a glimmer with a 3.6ft NE swell but it’s short period and barely has any energy (106 units). It’s glassy, so it’s clean, but the waves are just ordinary.
The first real sign of life arrives on Wednesday the 26th afternoon. A solid 7.5ft southerly groundswell rolls in with a long 17-second period, packing a massive 3198 units of energy. That’s a beast of a swell, but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, chopping it up. It’s labeled as marginal, and honestly, for a spot like Mbotyi, that much energy with a cross-wind is a messy affair. Thursday the 27th is similar, with 7.2ft southerly swell but cross-shore winds from the NE, making it lumpy. This is expert territory only if you’re desperate.
The standout window is Friday the 28th. The afternoon is your best bet. The southerly groundswell drops to a very manageable 4.6ft, but it’s still got a long 13-second period and plenty of energy (1255 units). The wind goes glassy, dead calm. That’s the magic combo. The forecast says it’s excellent surf for experienced surfers, and I’d agree. That’s the cleanest, most powerful wave we’ll see all week. The break is Mbotyi, and it’s a fairly consistent spot with an exposed east-facing setup. Take the Friday afternoon off and get out there.
Saturday the 29th morning sees a bump in size to 8.2ft from the ENE, but the period drops to 9 seconds and the wind is cross-shore. That’s going to be a wall of lumpy, short-period junk. 8.2ft is too big for beginners, and the wind won’t be kind.
After that, the swell drops off hard. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are back to small, choppy, and poor. The following week into September is a frustrating mix of onshore winds and small, weak swell, with a few pulses of bigger ENE swell, but the wind is always a problem. On Saturday the 5th of September, the forecast has a 9.8ft ENE swell, but it’s being powered by a 18.6 mph cross-shore wind. The report even says it’s just too big for this break. That’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle day.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud. The only real gem is Friday the 28th afternoon with 4.6ft of glassy, groundswell at Mbotyi. That’s the one to circle. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big and messy.
Stay salty.
