The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – this Mbotyi outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, but the good stuff is going to take some patience.
Right now, for the next couple of days, it’s basically flat. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a write-off for any real surf – we’re looking at tiny 0.6ft to 3ft waves with poor conditions. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
The first real pulse of energy shows up on Thursday the 27th. Swell jumps to 6ft from the ENE, but it’s a messy, short-period wind swell (6 seconds) with a strong cross-shore wind. The combined energy hits 212 (moderate), but the wind is going to chop it up. Not beginner-friendly – that 6ft is a bit much for learning, and the conditions are poor. Friday the 28th is a bit better in the morning with a 4ft S swell (12-second period, nice long lines) and moderate cross-shore wind. The combined energy is 975 (strong), but the wind is still cross-shore, so it’s marginal. The afternoon gets bigger (7ft ENE) but with a shorter period (9 seconds) and stronger wind – that’s getting into expert territory.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th keep the energy up – 6ft to 7ft from the ENE, but the wind never really cleans up. It’s cross-shore or cross-on all week. The best bet in this whole forecast might be the morning of Friday the 28th, with that S groundswell (12 seconds) giving some shape, but you’ll be fighting the wind. After that, we get a drop-off into early September with mostly smaller, poor-condition surf until the 5th and 6th.
On the 5th and 6th of September, we see a solid S swell (11 seconds) pushing 4ft to 4ft, with combined energy around 518-603 (moderate), but it’s cross-onshore from the east. It’s marginal, not clean. The 6th has a bigger 7ft ENE pulse (1051 energy, strong), but again, cross-onshore wind and short period (8 seconds) – that’s a messy, powerful wave for experts only.
Honestly, the standout here is Friday morning the 28th of August. The 4ft swell from the south with a 12-second period is the best quality we get – longer period means better shape and more energy. The combined energy is 975, which is strong. But the cross-shore wind is going to keep it from being perfect. For a dedicated surfer, that’s your window. Mbotyi is a fairly consistent spot, so it won’t stay poor forever, but this 16-day run is a tough one. If you’re not keen on fighting chop, this might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts. Rusty out.
