The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks at Mbotyi.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but it picks up nicely. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Sunday the 19th kicks things off with a clean 4ft SSE swell rolling in, glassy as anything with the wind barely a whisper from the east. The energy’s got some punch to it (1063), and that 13-second period means proper groundswell. This is the standout of the first few days – excellent surf for the experienced crew. Monday morning the 20th is also worth a mention: 6ft SE swell, still glassy, a bit more size but still very clean. That’s a solid morning session.
Tuesday the 21st keeps it clean with glassy mornings, but the swell drops to 4ft and the energy fades a bit. Still fun, but not the peak. Wednesday the 22nd sees the swell drop further, and by Thursday the 23rd we’re into a flat spell with tiny waves and onshore winds. That flat run lasts from Thursday the 23rd all the way through to Saturday the 26th – nothing worth paddling out for.
Then, on Monday the 27th, we get a surprise: a clean 6ft ENE swell, glassy again, with moderate energy (577). That’s a fun morning. But after that, the wind gets ugly and the surf turns messy for a few days.
Now, the real standout is way out there on Saturday the 1st of August. We’re looking at a massive 10ft SSE swell with a very long 13-second period, and the energy is off the charts (3248). But here’s the catch – it’s predicted to be too big for this break. The wind is cross-onshore, light, but the size alone puts it in expert-only territory. If you’re a seasoned charger and can handle that much water moving, it could be a wild one. But for most of us, it’s a day to watch from the beach.
Sunday the 2nd of August cleans up nicely: 7ft ENE swell, glassy, with a solid 1262 energy. That’s a great session for the experienced. Monday the 3rd has a similar vibe, 6ft ENE swell, glassy again, nice and clean.
So, overall: the best on offer is Sunday the 19th for clean, glassy groundswell, and Sunday the 2nd of August for a bigger, clean swell. The 1st of August is a monster, but only for the brave.
Rusty.
