Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about Mbotyi. Looking at this stretch, don’t expect much in the immediate future. The first recommendation doesn’t come until the start of the second week, so there’s a bit of a drought to get through.
The opening Sunday, the 5th, has some chest-high swell but it’s side-shore and the conditions are only marginal at best. Monday is smaller and still pretty average. Tuesday the 7th morning goes glassy, but the swell is tiny – only about 3ft. It’s a start, but nothing to get fired up about.
The real action starts to build from the 9th of July. Thursday afternoon sees a jump in size with a 7ft southerly swell rolling in, period at 13 seconds. The wind is cross-shore, and the wave energy is strong (1607). It’s still a bit messy, but for an experienced crew, that’s where the potential lives. Saturday the 11th has similar size, around 7ft, with that S swell, but again, cross-shore winds keep it from being perfect.
The standout window, and the one I’d mark on the calendar, is Tuesday the 14th of July. The afternoon session is the real gem. You’ve got a solid 5ft swell coming from the east with a 10-second period. The wind goes *glassy* – dead calm – and the water feels calm. The wave energy is strong (1012). This is that moment when Mbotyi shows its quality. There’s also a smaller but still clean option on Thursday the 16th afternoon, with 6ft and glassy conditions again. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is where you point the car.
The water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual. And if you’re a learner, keep in mind that anything over 5ft – like that 7ft on the 9th – is going to be a handful.
So bottom line: the first week is mostly a write-off. The second week, especially the 14th, is your best bet. That Tuesday afternoon with clean, glassy conditions and a decent east swell is the one to chase. The forecast is reliable for that near-term window, so get ready.
Rusty.
