Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mbotyi over the next 16 days.
G’day, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about Mbotyi. It’s a fairly consistent spot for intermediates, exposed to the east, and the water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year at 70°, so nothing unusual there. The next two weeks are a mixed bag, with a lot of marginal conditions and a few windows that could get the heart pumping.
Right now, we’re stuck in a flat spell. From Friday the 10th right through Sunday the 12th, the swell is tiny—only 1ft with a short period—and the wind is cross or cross-onshore. The wave energy is weak (22 to 27), and the surf is flat and poor. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday the 13th sees a bit of a jump. The swell comes up to 5ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, but there’s a moderate cross-shore wind and the energy is moderate (231). It’s still marginal—tide and conditions are iffy. By Monday afternoon, the swell hits 6ft from the east, but the wind picks up to 15 mph, making it bumpy. That’s a lot of energy (935) but the chop is tough.
Tuesday the 14th is where things start to get interesting. The morning is still a bit cross-on, 4ft from the ESE, but by Tuesday afternoon, the wind goes glassy. We’re looking at 6ft from the east, 9-second period, and the energy is strong (580). That’s clean, glassy surf. This is the first standout. The swell is solid for intermediates, maybe a bit much for beginners, but the wave quality should be good.
Wednesday the 15th keeps the run going. The morning is again glassy, with 6ft from the east, period 10 seconds, and energy at 646. That’s the best on offer in the first week. The afternoon sees a cross-shore wind come up, so aim for the morning session. These two days—Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning—are the picks.
From Thursday the 16th through Friday the 17th, the swell holds around 5ft to 6ft, but the wind turns cross-onshore or cross, and the energy drops. It’s still marginal. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th drop right off again—swell down to 2ft, weak energy, and poor conditions. A gap of two days.
Now, the real standout is on Monday the 20th. The morning brings a 7ft south swell, period 12 seconds, with glassy conditions. The energy is very strong (1361). This is a proper groundswell, and with that period, it’s going to have longer gaps between sets, so paddling out won’t be a fight. But at 7ft, this is for experienced surfers only—too big for beginners. The wind is glassy, so the waves will be clean. This is the best session of the whole outlook. The afternoon sees a cross-shore wind and drop in energy, so get on it early.
Tuesday the 21st drops back to 3ft with poor conditions, and Wednesday the 22nd sees a wild 19-second period from the south but only 4ft. That’s a very long period groundswell, which will break straight at a beach break, so it’s better suited to the points and reefs around here. The energy is strong (1094), but the wind is cross. Worth a look if you know the right bank.
The last few days from Thursday the 23rd to Saturday the 25th are a mess—small swell, short period, and strong winds hitting 15 to 19 mph. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The energy is weak, and the surf is poor.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is Tuesday afternoon 14th and Wednesday morning 15th for clean, glassy 6ft surf, and the absolute standout is Monday morning 20th with a 7ft south groundswell and glassy conditions. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. Keep in mind the long-range stuff is promising but less certain.
Rusty.
