The Lowdown
Alright, let's switch gears and talk feet and knots.
So, the first week or so is a real bummer. From Tuesday, August 18th, right through to the 26th, it's just blown out. The wind is all over the place, and the swell is weak and messy. The combined energy is mostly in the weak range, with a few moderate days getting spun up by the wind. Don't waste the gas.
But then, hold on, because Thursday, August 27th, is where it's at. The water temp is about 70°, which is pretty normal for the area. Thursday morning is the real deal. We're looking at a 4ft swell from the SSE, with a 14-second period – that's proper groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the NNW, and it's going to be clean. The energy in the water is a massive 1238. For an intermediate surfer, that's the one. The swell direction is a bit off the ideal E, but with those conditions, it'll be a blast. It's a bit too big for beginners, but it's not a monster. That long period around 15 seconds means the sets will be a bit wider apart, and at a beach break like Mbotyi, it can make the waves a bit closeout-y. Look for a rip to get out.
The afternoon of the 27th bumps up to 5ft, but the wind swings around, so it gets a bit messier. The morning is the winner.
After that, the energy stays high, but the wind turns ugly. Friday the 28th has waves around 6ft with a 14-second period, but it's cross-on, so it'll be a battle. Into the start of September, it's a lot of choppy windswell, with the swell getting bigger again – 8ft on September 1st – but that's for the expert crew only. The cross-shore winds will make it ugly.
So, bottom line: the first week is a no-go. The standout window is Thursday, August 27th, morning. Get out there early for the cleanest waves. The rest of the period is a waiting game on the wind.
Rusty.
