The Lowdown
Right, listen up. Rusty here. I’m looking at the run coming up for Mbotyi, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s a lean period. The first real chance to get wet doesn’t arrive until the morning of August 17th.
That Monday morning, the 17th of August, is the standout and really the only proper window we’ve got in the near term. The conditions are set up mint. We’ve got a 5ft easterly swell rolling in with a solid 11-second period, and the combined energy is moderate at 459. The kicker? The wind is glassy, 3 mph from the ESE. That’s a major positive, you’ll be looking at clean, smooth lines. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about normal for this time of year, nothing unusual. It’s a great morning for an intermediate surfer to get amongst it.
Later that Monday afternoon, the wind swings to a light cross-shore, the swell drops a touch to 4ft, and the energy fades to 353. You could still get a few, but it feels more marginal, so I’d be making the most of the morning session.
From Tuesday the 18th right through to the end of the month, it’s a long, frustrating run of mostly poor conditions. The swell is all over the shop, but the wind is nearly always wrong—cross, cross-on, or just too strong. On the 27th of August, the swell actually bumps up to 7ft from the NE with a staggering 801 energy reading, but it’s a messy cross-shore and the forecast is only marginal. That’s a big, powerful swell and it’s going to be a washing machine, likely only for the experienced crew and even then, not great.
Honestly, for the rest of the 16 days, there’s nothing else that’s worth paddling out for. The waves are either too small, too windy, or both. This is one of those stretches where you either get that Monday morning session or you’re waiting for the next swell.
Rusty.
