The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu at Whacky Point. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag stretching out over the next couple of weeks, so let’s get into it.

We’re starting off on Sunday, August 23rd with some clean, rideable waves. The morning sees a moderate 6ft swell from the SSW, with a 10-second period, and a strong offshore wind keeping things tidy. The water is sitting at 69°, which is bang on average for this time of year. The swell energy is moderate, coming in at 664. It’s surfable, but the standout session is actually in the afternoon – still 6ft, but the wind goes light and cross-off. This is where it gets good.

Monday the 24th is smaller, dropping to around 3ft, but the morning session is clean with a light breeze. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a light cross-onshore wind, so stick to the morning.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is where things get interesting. The morning is a real standout. We’ve got a 4ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period, and clean conditions off a light cross-off breeze. The energy is already strong, measuring 1363. This is going to be proper, with long lines and plenty of push. Whacky Point is a beach and point setup, and with that kind of period, the point is going to shine, giving you those long, racetrack walls. Just be mindful, this spot is inconsistent and only for the experienced crew. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so get in early.

The swell builds fast. Wednesday the 26th hits 7ft in the morning, but it’s marred by a cross-onshore wind and light rain. The afternoon sees 10ft, but it’s blown out and choppy, so that’s a no-go. Thursday and Friday are a complete write-off with strong onshore winds and messy conditions.

We hit a dry spell from Saturday the 29th all the way through Thursday, September 3rd. There’s some small, weak surf on the 30th and 31st, but nothing worth the paddle. The 1st of September has a glassy morning wave around 3ft, which is okay for a quick session, but nothing to write home about.

The standout of the whole run is undeniably Friday, September 4th. First thing in the morning, we’re looking at a massive 16ft SW groundswell with a long 17-second period. The wind is a strong offshore from the WSW, keeping the face clean. The energy is through the roof at 19315 – that’s very, very powerful stuff. This is for the absolute elite crew only; over 8ft it’s expert territory. The offshore wind is so strong it’ll make paddling a battle, but the wave itself will be world-class. That groundswell period is really going to suit the point. This is the session to circle.

Saturday the 5th is still big, with 18ft in the morning, but the guidance is saying it might be too big for the break itself. It’s a serious call. The afternoon drops to a still-pumping 13ft. Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th hold sizable, clean swell in the 10ft to 15ft range.

To wrap it up: your absolute best bets are the Tuesday morning session on the 25th for a clean, long-period groundswell, and the Friday morning on the 4th for a massive, expert-only bomb. Get after it.

Rusty.
