The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at Whacky Point. It’s a slow start, but there’s a definite window of proper surf coming through.
The water temp is 67°F, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year.
The first few days are a total bust. Monday the 17th has a tiny 1ft swell at 11 seconds, and even with glassy conditions, there’s nothing to ride. Tuesday the 18th is a bit better at 2ft, but it’s still underwhelming. Wednesday the 19th jumps to 4ft, but the onshore wind makes a mess of it.
Now, Thursday the 20th is where it starts to fire. The morning sees 5-6ft waves with a solid offshore wind. That’s clean. But the afternoon is the big one. The swell kicks up to a solid 8ft from the SSW with a 14-second period. This is a serious pulse of energy. The wind is light and clean. This is expert territory, make no mistake. It’s big and powerful.
Friday and Saturday are blown out again with onshore winds, even if the size stays around 5-6ft. The period also drops, so the quality suffers.
But then we hit the jackpot. Sunday the 23rd. The wind goes dead glassy, and we’ve got a solid 6ft of SSW groundswell with a 13-second period. This is the one. Perfect, clean, and powerful. The point should be absolutely humming. Monday the 24th is nearly as good – 6ft of swell with a 14-second period and light offshore winds. Two back-to-back mornings of top-tier surf.
After that, things drop off. The rest of the week has some waves but the wind starts to mess with it. The end of the month and into September looks like it’s fading back to small, choppy leftovers.
So, circle those dates. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are your best bets for clean, proper waves. The Thursday afternoon the 20th is for the big dogs only. Otherwise, just wait it out.
Rusty, signing off.
