The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's break down what Whacky Point's got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, Whacky Point's the only game in town, and she's an inconsistent spot, so you've gotta read the signs. Water temp's sitting at 69°F, right on the money for this time of year.
The action starts proper on Thursday the 20th. The afternoon session is the standout – a solid 8ft SSW swell packing serious energy (2925). That's a big fella, firmly in expert territory, but with a very long 15-second period, it's gonna produce some powerful, lined-up waves on the point. Light cross-off breeze keeps it clean, though the spot can get a crowd sometimes, so expect some company. Thursday morning's smaller at 3ft with moderate energy (796), still clean with a 13-second period, but the call says marginal – could be a tide issue.
Friday the 21st morning is a gem. Glassy as a mirror with the SE breeze barely a whisper at 3 mph, a clean 5ft SSW swell, decent 13-second period, and moderate energy (722). That's Whacky Point at its best – clean, punchy, and manageable for the experienced crew. Friday afternoon turns to rubbish with onshore wind.
Saturday the 22nd morning has some fire – 5ft SSW swell, a longer 14-second period, and solid energy (1130). Fresh offshore wind from the SW at 19 mph will groom the faces, but that wind makes paddling out a real chore. Afternoon is a write-off – short period junk and strong wind, best left alone.
Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 24th dish up consistent, clean, but smaller surf. Swell runs from 5ft down to 4ft with light to gentle cross-off breezes, periods between 10-14 seconds, and moderate energy (563-693). Nothing flash, but surfable and less crowded given the spot's inconsistent nature.
The best of it starts to slip after Monday, but Tuesday the 25th morning still packs a punchy 5ft SSW swell with a very long 15-second period (1188 energy), though a light cross-onshore ripple messes with perfection. Then onshore winds and poor conditions take over until Thursday the 27th afternoon, which offers a little relief: glassy conditions and a clean 4ft S swell with an 11-second period (480 energy). Worth a paddle if you're itching.
From there, it's a long, dusty run. Swell drops hard into the 2ft to 3ft range with fresh winds and messy conditions through late August into early September. There's one tiny glimmer on Wednesday the 2nd of September morning – glassy conditions and a 2ft SW groundswell with a very long 17-second period (349 energy). Tiny, but a fun, clean little runner on the point if the tide plays ball. After that, the outlook dries right up with onshore winds and poor surf for the first week of September.
For the real magic, hit Thursday afternoon the 20th if you've got the chops for big, expert waves, and Friday morning the 21st for the cleanest, most user-friendly session of the whole run. Don't sleep on it.
Rusty.
