The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, checkin' in from the coast.
We've got one break in the crosshairs for this outlook, and it's Keurbooms. The whole 16-day window is a proper mixed bag of solid swell and serious size, so you've got to pick your moments. Right out of the gate, don't expect a whole lot of friendly waves for the average punter. The first few days offer up solid, powerful swell, but the water is currently sitting at 56°, which is a whopping 7° colder than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual; you’re gonna need a thick steamer and some warm socks.
Through Tuesday, 18th August and Wednesday, 19th August, Keurbooms is seeing a consistent 7ft to 8ft SW groundswell with a period of 12 to 13 seconds. That’s got some serious grunt with a combined swell energy of 1598 to 2213 (moderate to strong). For Tuesday afternoon, the stars nearly align – we’ve got glassy conditions with a light SSE wind and still 8ft of SW swell. That’s the pick of the early window, but the water is still brutally cold. Wednesday afternoon also cleans up nicely with a cross-offshore wind, so there are solid, clean waves for experienced surfers. The 8ft size is pushing it for beginners, but for the crew who can handle it, there's a lot of energy to play with.
Then things go big. From Thursday, 20th August, right through Saturday, 23rd August, the swell just keeps pumping, pushing 12ft to 15ft. This is proper heavy stuff. The combined swell energy hits 4664 and even 4722 (very strong). For most surfers, this is a "watch and admire" zone unless you're an absolute charger with a gun and a death wish. The wind stays favorable for the most part, with glassy conditions on Sunday afternoon, but the raw power and size make it an expert-only zone. The readout even calls it too big for the break.
We get a small window to catch a breath on Monday, 24th August, when the swell drops back to a more manageable 6ft SSW, but the energy is weaker only 692 to 940 (weak to moderate). The conditions are okay, but nothing to write home about.
The real standout, and I mean the absolute highlight of this whole forecast, is Wednesday, 26th August. After the massive swell and some choppy days, we get a beautiful SW swell at 5ft to 6ft with a long 13-second period. The combined energy is still solid at 1513 (moderate). But the wind is the hero here – Wednesday morning has a light NW cross-offshore wind, and Wednesday afternoon turns completely glassy with a light NE breeze. For that one day, Keurbooms is going to be clean, lined up, and offering excellent surf for the experienced crowd. That’s your window. The rest of the end of August and into September gets messy again with onshore winds and more 12ft+ swell, or weak options. The 31st of August shows some glassy 8ft surf, which could be a decent backup.
Right now, Wednesday the 26th of August is the only true standout in this 16-day run. Everything else is either too big, too windy, or too small.
Rusty.
