The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for Keurbooms.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a bit of a write-off with very low scores. Things start to get interesting from Thursday afternoon, 16 July, and then we’ve got a real run of good waves. The real standout is the window from Thursday afternoon through to Monday morning, 20 July, with some absolutely glassy conditions and solid, clean swell. The water temperature is sitting at about 63°F which is just a touch cooler than average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
The first decent session looks like Thursday afternoon, 16 July, at Keurbooms. The swell is a solid 8ft from the SW, with a period of 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, and it’s going to have some good energy (combined energy of 2064). The wind is glassy, so it’ll be smooth as silk. That’s a good one for experienced surfers, as the size is right up there.
Friday morning, 17 July, keeps the run going with 8ft of SW swell at 12 seconds (1904 energy) and glassy conditions again. The wind is light offshore from the ESE, so it’ll be clean and lined up. This is another cracker for the experienced crew.
After a bit of a bumpy Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, 18 July, is a nice surprise. The wind drops to dead calm, glassy, and we’ve got 4ft of S swell (509 energy) with an 11-second period. It’s a smaller, cleaner day that'll be more manageable for intermediates.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning are okay, but the real standout is Sunday afternoon, 19 July, and all of Monday, 20 July. Sunday afternoon gives us 6ft SW swell (1113 energy) with a cross-offshore wind, clean and smooth. Monday morning and afternoon are the absolute pick of the first week: 8ft of SW swell, 12-second period, glassy and cross-off conditions, with energy readings of 1653 and 1722. That’s a classic Keurbooms day – solid, clean, and with that long period groundswell wrapping in nicely. The crowds are sometimes a factor here, so expect company.
Now, from Tuesday 21 July right through to the end of the forecast, we’re looking at some serious size. The swell jumps to 13ft and bigger, with periods reaching 14 and 15 seconds – that’s very long period groundswell. The energy readings go through the roof, hitting 9552 on Tuesday afternoon. This is expert territory only, and honestly, for most of us, it’s too big for paddle surfing. The wind is often glassy or clean, but the sheer size makes it a beast. It’s not a beginner or intermediate option. If you’re a kite surfer, this whole week from the 21st onward looks like a playground.
The last few days, from 26 July onward, the swell drops back a touch to 8ft and 10ft, with clean winds and offshore flow. Sunday 26 July looks like a good day for experienced surfers as the swell is 8ft from the SW with a 14-second period and clean, offshore winds. That’s still a solid day.
So, the best on offer is that run from Thursday 16 July through Monday 20 July. Don’t sleep on that Sunday afternoon and Monday session – clean, solid, and proper Keurbooms conditions.
Rusty.
