The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but it ain’t all plain sailing. We’re looking at a mixed bag of pulses, with a few real gems tucked in there, and a whole lot of swell that’s gonna be too big for the usual spots.

The overall pattern is a slow start, a solid mid-week window, and then a monster swell train that rolls in for the first week of September. For the first few days, the surf is pretty average with cross-onshore winds messing with the shape. The real standout pops up on Tuesday, 25 August. Keurbooms has a glassy morning with a 7.5ft SW groundswell, and the energy is pumping hard at 2846 (moderate to strong). The wind is glass, so the surface will be like a mirror. This is the best session on offer if you’re an experienced surfer.

Sunday, 23 August: Keurbooms gets a 7.5ft SW swell with a period of 11 seconds, but the wind is cross-on from the S at 6 mph. The water temp is about average for the time of year, which is nice. The combined energy is 1347 (moderate), but it’s a bit lumpy. Not a write-off, but not the pick.

Monday, 24 August: Swell drops to 5.6ft, still cross-on from the S. Energy is way down at 847 (weak to moderate). Nothing special.

Tuesday, 25 August: This is the one. A 7.5ft SW groundswell, period of 14 seconds, and glassy conditions in the morning. Combined energy 2846 (strong). This is the best it gets. Expect clean, powerful lines. You’ll want to be on it early.

Wednesday, 26 August: Wind picks up to 12-19 mph from the ESE. The swell is 4.9ft to 6.6ft, but it’s choppy and lumpy. A write-off.

Thursday, 27 August: The afternoon glass-off is the move here. A 6.2ft SSW swell with 12-second period goes glassy in the afternoon. Energy is 1873 (moderate). Good clean conditions for a late session.

Friday, 28 August: A nice little run of clean conditions. The morning sees a 4.6ft S swell with 11-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind from the N. Energy is 996 (moderate). The afternoon is even better with an offshore NW wind at 6 mph and a 3.9ft S swell. Clean, walled-up waves.

Saturday, 29 August: Wind cranks from the NNW at 25 mph in the morning. The swell is a small 3.6ft from the SSE. It’s clean for the wind, but the swell is weak. The afternoon is better with a 3.3ft swell and lighter wind, but it’s still a small day.

Sunday, 30 August: A messy day. The morning is cross-shore with a tiny 2.3ft E swell. The afternoon sees a 6.9ft SW swell, but it’s short period (9 seconds) and cross-on. Not great.

Monday, 31 August: Very small. 3.6ft and 3.0ft swells, poor conditions. Forget it.

Tuesday, 1 September: The first of the big swells. A 9.8ft SW groundswell, 13-second period, with a light cross-on wind in the morning. The energy is 2636 (strong). But the call says it’s too big for Keurbooms. The afternoon goes glassy with a 7.5ft swell. For experts only, and even then, it’s pushing the limit.

Wednesday, 2 September: Swell is 9.8ft to 13.1ft, SW. The wind is offshore in the morning, but it’s pumping 3253 to 5574 energy. Too big for most. This is big-wave territory.

Thursday, 3 September: 9.8ft to 14.8ft SW swells. Offshore wind in the morning, cross-off in the afternoon. Energy is massive at 3612 to 6727. This is a pure, heavy, powerful groundswell. Only for the crew with the biggest balls. The period is 13-14 seconds, so it’s a proper long-period groundswell that will be breaking straight and fast at the beach. It’s best left to the reefs and points, but Keurbooms is going to be a washing machine.

Friday, 4 September: Still huge. 11.5ft SW in the morning, easing to 6.9ft in the afternoon. The morning is cross-shore, the afternoon is lighter. Still very powerful.

Saturday, 5 September: Another 11.5ft day. Cross-on from the E. Energy is 4576. Choppy and too big.

Sunday, 6 September: Swell drops

Days 5-7 Weather Summary
