Alright folks, Rusty here, with a look at what the ocean's got cookin' for us in the Keurbooms area. Got a solid run of swells on the way, but we gotta pick our moments.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 63°, which is just a touch cooler than average for this time of year, nothing crazy, a little fresh in the morning but fine once you're in it.
The pattern kicks off proper on Tuesday, July 7th. Keurbooms is the only game in town, and it's an exposed spot that loves a swell from the SE. We're looking at a moderate energy swell, around 1218 (moderate wave energy) coming from the SW at 7 ft with a nice 12-second period from a solid groundswell. That period is key – long lines, proper push. Tuesday morning is the real standout: glassy conditions with a light WSW breeze at 3 mph. This is for the experienced crew though – that 7 ft at a long period is gonna pack a punch. Keurbooms can get crowded sometimes, but on a Tuesday morning with that size, you'll have room if you're confident. Tuesday afternoon holds in with clean 6 ft and still glassy – a solid start.
Wednesday the 8th keeps the quality up. Morning sees 8 ft from the SW, period 13 seconds, and a light cross-offshore wind from the WSW at 6 mph. Clean, lined-up waves for the intermediate and above. The energy is climbing too, hitting 1884 (strong wave energy). Afternoon drops a touch to 7 ft but stays clean with a cross-off. Keurbooms is delivering.
Now, Thursday the 9th is where it gets serious for the big wave chargers. The swell jumps to 10 ft from the SSW, period 14 seconds. The combined energy is massive at 3511 (strong wave energy). That's too much for most, strictly for experienced surfers only. BUT the wind is light cross-off in the morning and glassy calm on Friday morning the 10th with the same 10 ft – that's a big, clean, powerful ocean. Only for those who know what they're doing. Friday afternoon stays glassy.
The weekend brings a slight drop. Saturday the 11th, morning glass with 8 ft from the SSW, 12-second period, energy at 1819 (strong wave energy). Still heavy, but there's a window before the wind turns onshore in the afternoon. Sunday the 12th is much more manageable: 5 ft from the SSW, 11-second period, glassy morning. That's a fun size for a bigger range of surfers, with energy dropping to 735 (moderate wave energy).
We then hit a bit of a lull in the middle of the week. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th serve up smaller 5 ft to 6 ft stuff from the ESE, period around 9-10 seconds. Glassy mornings are nice but the period is shorter, less grunt. The energy is in the 600-700 range (moderate wave energy). It's surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Then we get a spike. Thursday the 16th afternoon, a big 10 ft SW swell arrives with a 13-second period and a crushing 4584 combined energy (very strong wave energy). Friday the 17th is glassy all day with the same 10 ft. Again, experts-only territory, but absolutely perfect conditions for those who can handle it.
The following week, from the 18th to the 22nd, it's a mixed bag. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th bring 8 ft to 13 ft swells from the SE with short 9-second periods. That's big, fat, and a bit junky – honestly, with that wind and size at a beach setup, it's looking more like a kitesurfer's paradise than a paddler's dream. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st hold at 10 ft to 12 ft from the SE with a bit more period (11 seconds), but still heavy.
The run finally eases into Wednesday the 22nd with 6 ft from the ESE, period 11 seconds, and clean cross-off winds. A nice finisher.
To pick a standout – for the experienced surfer, you cannot miss Tuesday morning the 7th. Glassy, solid 7 ft, long period groundswell, light crowd. It's the whole package. For the intermediate wanting a clean, powerful session without the absolute max size, Wednesday morning the 8th is your pick. For the big wave crew, the window from Thursday the 9th through Friday the 10th is as good as it gets – just be sure you're ready for it.
Stay safe, read the ocean, and I'll see you in the water.
