The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let me talk you through what's cooking at Keurbooms over the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a slow start, but Tuesday morning, the 14th of July, is already looking sweet. We’re expecting a clean 5 ft swell from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 373, and crucially, the wind is glassy with a SSW breeze at 3 mph. The water temperature is about average for this time of year. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and while it’s exposed, the offshore direction is NW, so we’re in for some clean, fun waves. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
The best window really kicks off on Wednesday afternoon, the 15th. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the SW, with a longer 11-second period, and cross-off winds from the WSW at 6 mph. The combined energy goes up to 1242, which is moderate. The conditions are set to be excellent for experienced surfers. This is a standout session.
Thursday the 16th morning sees a big 10 ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 3000 – that’s strong wave energy. However, the wind is onshore from the SE, and the swell is too big for this break. The afternoon glass-off with no wind is much better, with an 8 ft SW swell at 13 seconds, but it’s still big – only for experts.
Friday the 17th morning is another standout: glassy conditions with a 8 ft SW swell, 12-second period, and a combined energy of 1655. The wind is SSW at 3 mph, making for clean, powerful waves. The afternoon gets a bit questionable with a cross-shore wind.
Saturday the 18th is glassy all day, with a 6 ft S swell in the morning (12-second period, 1151 energy) dropping to 5 ft in the afternoon. Both are clean and very good for experienced surfers.
Sunday the 19th gets messy: strong cross-off winds at 12 mph and a 10 ft SW swell that’s too big for the break. Monday the 20th is similar – huge 10 ft SSW swell, glassy but too big.
The next real highlight is Tuesday the 21st afternoon. The swell drops to 8 ft from the SSW with a very long 15-second period, combined energy of 3090, and glassy conditions. This is a solid, powerful groundswell that will be breaking fast and straight, so it’s best for experienced surfers. The following mornings are mostly too big until Friday the 24th.
Friday the 24th morning sees a drop to 4 ft SW swell, 14-second period, clean cross-off wind, and a combined energy of 1097. The afternoon is glassy with 4 ft and no wind – a lovely, clean session. Saturday the 25th morning is also nice with a 5 ft ESE swell, 9-second period, and glassy conditions.
The final standout is Monday the 28th morning. An 8 ft SW swell with a 12-second period, offshore NW wind at 3 mph, and a combined energy of 1790. The conditions are clean and powerful, perfect for experienced surfers.
Overall, the best on offer is Wednesday afternoon the 15th and Tuesday afternoon the 21st. Both offer strong, clean swell with good wind. The second week is promising but less certain, especially the 28th.
Rusty.
