Right, folks, Rusty here with a look at what the ocean’s got lined up for us over the next couple of weeks. We’re focusing on one spot that’s showing some real potential, so let’s get into it.
Alright, we’ve got a solid run of surf coming our way at Keurbooms. The pattern looks like a punchy Southern Ocean groundswell that’s going to fill in and hold for a good stretch, especially through this first week. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year, nothing too strange.
We’re starting off on Monday, 6 July, with clean, glassy conditions first thing. The swell is 6ft coming from the SW with a period of 12 seconds – that’s a nice, long-period groundswell bringing proper energy. The combined swell energy is moderate at (1169). This is quality stuff for experienced surfers, that period means the waves will be well-shaped and have some push, with longer lulls between sets. The wind is completely glassy from the east at 3 mph, which is a major positive. It’s not massive, but it’s a beautiful start.
Things step up a notch on Tuesday, 7 July, and into Wednesday, 8 July. Tuesday morning is glassy again with a 7ft SW swell (1218 energy), and Tuesday afternoon stays glassy too. By Wednesday morning, the swell builds to 7ft from the SW, the energy jumps to (1782), and we get a clean cross-off wind. Wednesday afternoon sees the swell hit 8ft from the SW with energy at (2091) – still clean. This is where the surf gets really fun, that bigger, more powerful swell with clean conditions.
Now, Thursday, 9 July, the swell gets pretty serious. We’re looking at 10ft from the SW on Thursday morning with energy at (3343). The wind is still cross-off and light, but at over 8ft, this one is for experts only – the power will be significant. A huge day for the more experienced crew. Friday, 10 July, is also too big for most, with 12ft on the morning and 10ft in the afternoon, and the wind turns cross-onshore, making it a bit messy on top.
The standout overall has to be the stretch from Monday, 6 July through to Wednesday, 8 July. But the absolute highlight? I’d say Tuesday, 7 July. You’ve got glassy winds all day, a solid 7ft SW swell with that lovely 12-second period, and a moderate but powerful energy level (1218). The conditions are just about perfect for an intermediate surfer wanting to get into some proper waves. Crowds are possible here at Keurbooms, so you might have some company.
After Friday’s bluster, things clean up again for Saturday, 11 July, with a 7ft SSW swell and clean cross-off winds in the morning. The energy is still strong at (2000). Sunday, 12 July, and Monday, 13 July, look fantastic with glassy conditions and an 8ft and 8ft swell from the SE/ESE. The period drops to 8-9 seconds, so it’s a shorter-period wind swell, but it’ll still offer good waves on the bank.
Into the second week, we’re looking at another push. Tuesday, 14 July, is a gem with a glassy afternoon and a 6ft ESE swell (1073 energy). Wednesday, 15 July, is a bit smaller at 5ft, but with glassy winds. Then Thursday, 16 July, the swell picks up again to 7ft SW in the morning. Friday, 17 July, is another cracker – a 8ft SW swell with a light cross-off in the morning, and a completely glassy 7ft SW swell for the afternoon. The energy is strong at (1640) and (1516). That Friday afternoon is another standout for the second week, but being a week and a half out, it’s promising but not locked in.
The weekend of 18-19 July sees a drop in size, and by 19 July the swell gets a bit messy with onshore breezes. The run fades out early the following week with small, clean swells in the 3ft range.
So, for the best on offer, lock in Tuesday, 7 July and Friday, 17 July. Get on it.
