The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Keurbooms over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming our way. The forecast kicks off on Tuesday, August 18th, but honestly, the first couple of days are a bit of a write-off. The water's sitting at a freezing 56°F – that’s a whopping 8°F colder than usual for this time of year, so you'll be needing a thick steamer and maybe some booties. The surf is there, with a 8 ft SW swell and a solid 12-second period, giving it moderate wave energy, but the wind is messy, cross-onshore, and the comments are pretty clear it’s marginal.
Wednesday the 19th afternoon is where we see our first real glimmer of hope. The swell holds at 8 ft from the SW, still with that good 12-second period, and the wind swings cross-offshore from the WSW. It cleans right up, making for some decent waves. This is the first session that’s worth paddling out for if you’re experienced.
Now, the standout period is going to be Thursday the 20th of August. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook. We’ve got an 12 ft SW swell, period bumping up to 13 seconds, and the wave energy is strong, absolutely pumping. The wind goes glassy in the afternoon from the SSE. Yes, the swell is big – over 8 ft – so this one is strictly for the experienced crew. Beginners, sit this one out. But for the experts, with those clean, glassy conditions and that amount of power, Keurbooms is going to be firing. Just be aware, with this being a fairly consistent spot and that kinda size, expect some company. The optimum swell direction is SE, and this is coming from the SW, so it's not hitting the break at its absolute perfect angle, but with that much juice, it'll still work.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are a step down in quality as the swell drops and the wind gets more onshore, keeping things choppy and marginal.
We do get another good window on Sunday the 23rd of August. The morning is a solid 10 ft SW swell (13 seconds), with strong energy, but the wind is cross-shore. The real gem on Sunday is the afternoon session when it goes glassy with an 8 ft SW swell. Clean conditions for the experienced folks, but again, it's a big, powerful wave.
The outlook gets quieter for a few days after that, with smaller swells and onshore winds, though Wednesday the 26th afternoon goes glassy again with a clean 5 ft swell. There are a couple more late-period pulses, like the 8 ft glassy morning on Saturday the 29th of August and a nice 4 ft SSW groundswell (15-second period) on Monday the 31st of August morning. That longer period stuff at Keerbooms, being a river mouth/point set up, should actually handle that very well, offering some long, lined-up walls. But the wind on the 31st afternoon gets howling at 22 mph, so that window is short.
To wrap it up, your top pick is definitely Thursday the 20th of August afternoon for the big, glassy, powerful stuff – experts only. For a slightly smaller but still clean session, Sunday the 23rd of August afternoon is your next best bet.
Stay safe and get some.
Rusty.
