The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, givin’ it to you in old-school feet and knots.
The first real chance to get wet is Sunday the 23rd. The water is sittin’ at 59°, which is a solid 5° colder than usual for this time of year – so you’re gonna want a good thick wetsuit, maybe boots too. The swell is a chunky 8ft out of the SW, with a period of 11 seconds, putting a solid amount of energy in the water (1347). Sunday morning has a light cross-on breeze, but it’s the afternoon that steals the show – glassy conditions with the same 8ft SW swell, but the period bumps up to 13 seconds, really cleaning things up. This is the standout for the first week: clean, solid, and for the experienced crew.
Monday the 24th drops off a bit – 6ft in the morning and 4ft in the afternoon, both with a cross-on breeze. It’s a bit of a letdown after Sunday. Tuesday the 25th sees a bigger pulse of 8ft SW swell, but the wind is still cross-on. The energy is high (3040 to 3914), but the conditions are just “marginal.” Wednesday the 26th is a write-off – strong winds from the E and ESE (12 to 22 knots) ruin the surface, so leave the board in the car.
Then we get a nice little window on Thursday the 27th. Glassy conditions again, with a 7ft SSW swell (12 sec) in the morning and a 5ft S swell (11 sec) in the afternoon. The energy is decent (1644 to 1426), and the surface is clean as a whistle. This is your second-best bet in the first week for experienced surfers.
Friday the 28th is a bit mixed – morning has a slight offshore wind, but the swell is smaller at 5ft. The afternoon goes glassy with a 4ft S swell, so it’s rideable but small. Into the weekend, we get a big NNW wind on Saturday the 29th – 25 knots cross-off, so the surf is blown out, but it’s clean. The swell is only 4ft, so not much to work with.
Now, the second week gets interesting, but it’s for experts only. Monday the 31st of August sees a massive 10ft SW swell roll in, but the wave comment says it’s too big for this break. Tuesday the 1st of September is glassy with a 8ft SW swell – again, expert territory. The real standout in the second week is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning is offshore with a WNW wind at 6 knots, and a 7ft SW swell (12 sec) – that’s clean, powerful, and the best-looking session in the whole outlook for anyone who can handle it.
After that, it gets wild. From the 3rd of September onwards, the swell just explodes – 23ft, 25ft, 18ft, 13ft – all with strong energy (53128, 27328, 12255). These are all marked as “too big for this break,” so unless you’re a tow-in charger or a big-wave nut, you’re staying on the beach. The wind is mostly offshore or glassy, but the sheer size makes it a no-go for paddle surfing.
Bottom line: The best on offer is Sunday afternoon the 23rd of August for clean, solid groundswell, and Wednesday morning the 2nd of September for a clean offshore, big-wave session. Everything else is either small, blown out, or way too big. If you’re a beginner, stay well clear of the August 31st to September 7th window – that’s all expert or insane.
Rusty.
