The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Keurbooms over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid block of surf coming our way, but it’s a mixed bag of conditions. The water is sitting at 64°F right now, which is pretty much spot on average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The action kicks off this Friday afternoon, the 17th of July. The swell is a meaty 7ft from the SW, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell. The wind is dead calm, glassy. It’s going to be clean, but that size is getting into the territory where it’s only for experienced surfers. The energy is pumping (1187).
Saturday morning, the 18th, drops a bit to 4ft from the S, with a 12-second period. The wind is a light WSW cross-off, so the waves will be clean. It’s a more manageable size for the intermediates. Saturday afternoon sees a bump back up to 6ft from the SW, and the wind goes glassy – that’s a great window.
Sunday morning, the 19th, is small again at 4ft from the SW with a 12-second period, and a clean cross-off wind. Sunday afternoon, though, the swell jumps to 10ft from the SW. That’s a big, powerful swell with a short 9-second period. The wind is a stiff cross-off, but honestly, at 10ft, this is for experts only. The energy is massive (1555).
The standout of the whole run, without a doubt, is Wednesday the 22nd of July. The afternoon session is just unreal on paper. You’ve got a 8ft swell from the SW, a long 13-second period, and the wind is dead calm – glassy perfection. The wave energy is through the roof (4072). That’s the one to circle. The morning of the 22nd is also excellent with a 7ft swell and a clean cross-off wind.
We’ve got a few more glassy windows in the first week, like Thursday the 23rd morning and afternoon, with clean 7ft to 8ft SW swells. But from the 24th of July onwards, things get heavy. Friday the 24th has a 10ft to 12ft SW groundswell with a very long period of 15-16 seconds. The wind is onshore, but the sheer size makes it a beast for experts only. The energy numbers are in the thousands (4918, 4718).
The weekend of the 25th and 26th is big and messy. Saturday the 25th is still 10ft from the SW with glassy conditions, but it’s too big for most. Sunday the 26th has heavy rain and strong onshore wind – a write-off.
Into the second week, things settle down. Monday the 27th has some cross-on wind and messy swell, but Tuesday the 28th morning is a beauty: 5ft from the SSW, 14-second period, and glassy. Wednesday the 29th morning is also a glassy little gem at 4ft from the SW.
The real winner for the second week lands on Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st of July. The swell shifts around to the E and ESE, around 6ft to 6ft, with a solid 10-11 second period. The wind is a clean, light cross-off from the NNW. That’s perfect for rippable, clean waves. Saturday the 1st of August has a cleaner offshore wind, but the swell drops to 4ft-5ft, so it’s a bit weaker.
So, to sum it up: the absolute best on offer is Wednesday the 22nd of July afternoon – big, glassy, and powerful. For the second week, keep your eyes on Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st for clean, fun waves. The 24th to the 26th is for the brave and the stupid.
Rusty.
