The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the Keurbooms stretch. This is a solid run of surf coming our way, but you gotta pick your moments. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is just about normal for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
We kick off on Saturday the 18th. It’s not a huge day, but it’s a sweet start. Morning sees a clean 4ft swell from the south with a decent 11-second period, and it’s dead glassy. The wave energy is moderate (644). That’s a lovely, user-friendly wave for intermediates. The afternoon bumps up a touch to 5ft from the southwest, still glassy. A very nice way to ease into the weekend.
Sunday the 19th is the first real standout. Morning session is magic: 5ft of southwest swell, 12-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is picking up (939). This is clean, fun surf. The afternoon gets a bit more challenging as the wind swings to the west and picks up to 12 mph, cross-off, but the swell jumps to 8ft. That’s getting into the “too big for beginners” territory, and the period drops to 8 seconds, so it’s a bit shorter and more powerful. It’s interesting, but not the pick of the week.
Monday the 20th is the real gem. We’re looking at 6ft of southwest swell in the morning, glassy, with a good 11-second period. The energy is strong (1229). This is excellent, clean surf for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds with 6ft and still glassy. This is the day to call in sick for.
Tuesday the 21st is another cracker. The morning is a clean 5ft from the southwest, but the period is a very long 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Energy is strong (1397). This will be a bit more powerful, with longer gaps between sets. It’s excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon is even bigger at 7ft from the south-southwest, still glassy, with that same long 14-second period. The energy is very strong (2034). This is high-grade stuff, but it’s for the confident crew.
Wednesday the 22nd is a tale of two halves. The morning is excellent: 8ft of southwest swell, 13 seconds, glassy, very strong energy (1749). This is a top-tier session for experienced surfers. However, the afternoon swell hits 10ft with a 12-second period. That’s too big for this break, even with glassy wind. Keep an eye on it, but it’s likely a washout.
From Thursday the 23rd through to Saturday the 26th, the swell is consistently over 8ft, reaching 12ft and even 13ft with very strong energy (up to 4516). The wind is mostly cross or cross-on. This is strictly for experts only, and honestly, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of that window. The waves will be powerful and unruly.
The surf settles back down on Sunday the 26th. The morning is a beautiful 6ft from the southwest, 12-second period, and glassy. Energy is strong (1791). This is excellent for experienced surfers again. The afternoon holds at 7ft, glassy. A very welcome return to clean conditions.
Monday the 27th is another solid day. The morning is 7ft from the southwest, 13 seconds, glassy, with strong energy (1704). The afternoon is the same size, but the wind is offshore from the northwest, making it super clean. This is a great day for a paddle.
The rest of the week into the 2nd of August has some fun windows, but nothing as magic as the 20th, 21st, or 27th. The standout is still the Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. Get on it.
Rusty, signing off.
