The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, checking in on Keurbooms for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag. The surf is on the menu, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The water is sitting at 56.8°, which is a good 6.7° colder than usual for this time of year. That’s a serious chill, so don’t even think about it without a thick suit and booties. The combined swell energy is moderate to strong in the early days, coming in at 911 for the first session.
We start on Saturday, 22 August. The morning has a 5.6ft SSW swell, with a 12-second period, blown by a cross-offshore wind from the west at 19 mph. It’s clean, but the energy is only moderate (911). The afternoon drops a touch to 5.2ft, still clean. Not a standout, but a decent warm-up if you’re keen.
Sunday, 23 August, the swell picks up to 7.5ft from the SW, with a period of 11 seconds and a combined energy of 1369. The morning wind is a light cross-on from the south, so it’s a bit messy. The afternoon drops to 7.2ft, but the wind goes onshore from the SE. It’s not great, but there’s some size.
Now, Monday, 24 August, that’s where my ears perk up. The morning is glassy, with a 5.9ft SW swell, 12-second period, and a combined energy of 922. The wind is a dead calm from the south. This is a proper window for clean, fun waves. The afternoon gets a little cross-shore, but the morning is the pick of the early days.
Tuesday, 25 August, we see a bigger pulse: 8.2ft from the SW, with a 14-second period in the morning. That’s a long-period groundswell, and it’s hitting with a combined energy of 2726. The wind is onshore from the SE, so it’s holding it together, but it’s a powerful swell. This is getting into expert territory—too big for beginners. The afternoon is similar.
The midweek gets a bit wild. Wednesday, 26 August, the wind turns onshore and fresh, blowing 12 to 19 mph from the ESE. The swell is 6.6ft, but it’s choppy and lumpy. The energy is strong (1981 to 2415), but the quality is poor. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The real standout, and I mean the one to circle on your calendar, is Thursday, 27 August, in the afternoon. We’ve got glassy conditions, a 5.9ft SSW swell with a 12-second period, and a combined energy of 2392. The wind is dead calm from the east. For experienced surfers, this is as good as it gets. The morning of Friday, 28 August, is also glassy, with a 5.6ft ESE swell, but the period is shorter at 10 seconds, and the energy is a bit lower (1228). Still, a solid session.
Saturday, 29 August, sees a big drop in swell size to 3.3ft, but the wind is a strong cross-offshore from the NNW at 25 mph. It’s clean, but tiny. Not worth the paddle.
Sunday, 30 August, the swell jumps back up to 9.8ft from the SW, with an 11-second period. The combined energy is 2511 in the morning. The wind is light and cross-shore, then glassy in the afternoon. But here’s the kicker: 9.8ft is too big for this break. It’s only for experts, and even then, it’s a beast. The afternoon is the same story.
The following week is a mixed bag of big swell and clean conditions. Monday, 31 August, is 8.2ft to 9.8ft, with a clean cross-offshore wind. Again, that’s big. Tuesday, 01 September, drops to 7.9ft, but the wind is onshore. Not great.
The next real standout is Wednesday, 02 September. The afternoon is glassy, with a 8.2ft SW swell, a 14-second period, and a combined energy of 3407. That is a proper, powerful, long-period groundswell. The wind is dead calm from the SSW. It’s clean, it’s big, and it’s for experienced surfers only. This is the best session on offer in the whole window. Later in the period, the swell gets even bigger, but it’s too much for the break.
Looking further out, the first week of September sees a massive pulse
