The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got a good look at what’s coming up for Keurbooms over the next couple of weeks. Let’s break it down.
First thing you need to know: the water at Keurbooms right now is sitting at 14°, which is a whopping 4° colder than normal for this time of year. That’s seriously unusual, so you’re gonna want a good 5/4 wetsuit, maybe booties, if you’re heading out today or tomorrow. It’s a proper winter chill.
Right from the start on Friday the 21st, we’ve got some pulse in the water. Friday morning shows a clean 2.3m SW groundswell with a 12-second period and light SE wind that’s onshore, but light enough not to destroy it. The combined energy is 1450 (moderate), so there’s some push. But the forecast flags it as marginal – maybe a tide issue or just not lining up perfectly. If you’re keen, have a look but don’t expect magic.
Saturday the 22nd is where it starts to get interesting. Afternoon is the pick: still 1.6m SW swell from the same 12-second groundswell, but now we’ve got a cross-offshore W wind at 15 km/h, and the wave state is clean. That 936 combined energy is still decent, and the score says “very good surf conditions.” This is one of the better windows of the run – consistent, clean, and the break is fairly consistent overall. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so if you can get to Keurbooms early on Saturday afternoon, you’ll be in luck.
Sunday the 23rd is still rideable – 2.3m in the morning and 1.9m in the afternoon, both from the SW, period around 11 seconds. But the wind is S to SSE, light, and cross-onshore, just putting a small ripple on the face. Okay for a cruise, but not as clean as Saturday.
Now, hold onto your board – Tuesday the 25th is a standout. Both morning and afternoon pump 3.0m of SW swell with a 14-second period, and the wind is light onshore from the SE at just 5 km/h. The combined energy jumps to 3150 and 2774 (strong!). The problem is, the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. At 3.0m, this is for experienced surfers only. Beginners, stay on the beach. If you’re skilled and know the bank, this is the best energy of the first week, but it’s a big, powerful groundswell – those long 14-second periods mean the sets will be clean and walled-up at this exposed setup.
After that, we get a bit of a lull. Wednesday the 26th is messy with a strong cross-onshore ESE wind, and the score is poor. But then Thursday the 27th brings another real highlight: 1.7m to 1.9m of S swell with a very long 15-second period, and the wind goes glassy. Yes – glassy. Both morning and afternoon are rated as excellent for experienced surfers. The combined energy is over 2000 (strong). This is a clean, powerful groundswell session. The long period will make for well-shaped, powerful lines, but watch out – with that length, it might close out a bit if you get a big set. Best for intermediate to advanced crew.
Friday the 28th afternoon is another glassy moment, with 1.4m S swell and 12-second period – smaller but clean. Not a standout, but a nice session if you’re around.
Come Saturday the 29th morning, we get a shift: 1.9m SW swell with a shorter 10-second period, but the wind goes cross-offshore from the west at 10 km/h. Clean again. Score says excellent.
Now, mark your calendars for Sunday the 30th of August. This is the biggest swell of the whole run. 4.5m in the morning, 4.0m in the afternoon, SW groundswell with a 13-second period. The combined energy is massive – over 6500 and 5600 (very strong). The wind is offshore in the morning and glassy in the afternoon. But again – this is far too big for Keurbooms. Only the most experienced chargers should even think about it, and even then, prepare for a beating.
The first week of September stays solid but mostly big. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th are both 4.0m and 3.0m days, clean winds but again, well over 2.5m. Expert territory.
The real standouts of this whole outlook: Saturday afternoon the 22nd for a clean, fun size session, and Thursday the 27th for that glassy, long-period groundswell that will have the banks firing clean. Don’t sleep on those two windows.
We’ve got a gap after Saturday afternoon the 22nd until Tuesday morning the 25th where the quality dips, but there’s no true flat spell – just a couple of days of marginal conditions.
Stay warm and stay sharp.
