Table - best surf conditions forecast for Keurbooms over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ our way.
We’re starting off with a bit of a frustrating wait. The first few days are all about a big, powerful SSW swell that’s just too much for Keurbooms. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th see solid 10ft swell with a long 13-14 second period, but it’s simply too big for this spot – the wave energy is pumping hard (3703 on Thursday morning). The wind is mostly cross-off or glassy, which would be magic, but the size rules it out for a safe paddle.
The first real chance to get wet comes Saturday morning, the 11th of July. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8ft from the SSW, with a 12-second period. The wind is glassy, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is for the big dogs only – that 8ft mark is expert territory, but the energy is still strong (2044). The afternoon goes downhill fast with a cross-on breeze, so Saturday morning is your window.
Sunday the 12th is a write-off, with dropping swell and onshore winds making things messy. The energy drops to moderate (997).
Monday morning the 13th brings a bit of hope. The swell drops to 5ft from the ESE, but with a short 8-second period. The wind is clean cross-off, and the wave energy is moderate (532). It’s a small, clean option for the morning, but the short period means shorter, weaker waves.
Tuesday the 14th is a real glassy gem. The swell is a small 4ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, and the wind is glass all day. The energy is weak (308), but the sea is a mirror. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. It’s a fun, mellow session for the intermediate crew.
Wednesday the 15th offers a glassy afternoon with a tiny 3ft E swell (9-second period, 272 energy). The wind is calm. It’s better than a kick in the teeth, but you’ll be working for every wave.
Then we get a wild card on Thursday the 16th. The morning sees a 4ft swell from the SW with a very long 16-second period, and a strong cross-off wind (25 km/h). The energy is strong (1403). That long period groundswell at a spot like this? It’ll be lining up, but the wind is strong. The afternoon is a total loss with 10ft and a cross-on howler.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are blown out by cross-on winds, with swell in the 6ft to 8ft range. Choppy, messy, not worth it.
Sunday the 19th afternoon is a return to form. Glassy conditions, a clean 4ft E swell (10-second period, 625 energy). The guidance says “very good surf conditions,” and I’d agree. A nice, clean session to end the week.
Monday the 20th keeps the good streak going. Morning glass, 4ft SW swell with a 12-second period, energy moderate (581). The wind is glass, and the conditions are “very good.”
Tuesday the 21st morning sees a small 6ft SW swell (10-second period, 840 energy) with a clean cross-off wind. It’s alright, but the afternoon gets blown up again as a 10ft SW swell (14-second period, 3225 energy) rolls in – too big again.
The final stretch from Wednesday the 22nd to Friday the 24th is all about that massive, long-period SW groundswell. We’re talking 12ft to 13ft with a 15-16 second period, and energy readings through the roof (up to 9181 on Thursday afternoon). The wind is glassy or light cross-off, which is a stunning sight. But this is a monster. It’s so far out that it’s promising but less certain. For Keurbooms, these are expert-only, agenda-setting swells. If you’re a charger, Thursday the 24th morning with 13ft and light cross-shore wind is the standout on paper, but you’d better know what you’re doing.
The real standout for the average surfer? Saturday morning, July 11th. That’s the first wave you can actually ride, with a decent 8ft SSW swell and glassy conditions. For the clean, glassy, fun-size days, circle Tuesday the 14th and Sunday the 19th afternoon.
Rusty.
