Right, grab a seat. This stretch here for the next couple of weeks, it's all about one spot: Keurbooms. It's exposed to the swell and it's going to be our main character for a while.
We kick things off on the 4th of July. First light Saturday morning is dead calm, glassy as a mirror. You've got a solid 7ft of groundswell rolling in from the ESE, period a nice long 12 seconds. The combined energy is pumping at 1335 (moderate wave energy). This is excellent, but it's pushing 6 feet, so it's really for the experienced crew. That water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
That quality holds through Sunday the 5th. A little smaller, around 5ft from the ESE, still with that long 12-second gap and clean, glassy conditions. The energy drops to a still-very-healthy 716. Expect very good waves.
Now, Monday the 6th brings a shift. Swell goes southwest, jumping back up to 6ft. Morning is excellent with the 12-second period, but by afternoon it drops right off to a tiny 2ft, though the period stretches out to 14 seconds. That's a long-period groundswell, so if you're chasing it at a beachie, be warned it might break a bit straight. At Keurbooms, it could be interesting for a point or river mouth setup.
Tuesday the 7th is another standout. The morning is 7ft of SW groundswell, a classic 12-second period, and glassy. That's a 1324 energy reading — that’s some proper punch. Tuesday afternoon, the wind goes dead calm again, 7ft of SW, clean as a whistle. This is the cream of the crop for the experienced surfer.
The real fun kicks off Wednesday the 8th. We’ve got a 8ft SW swell in the morning, with a 13-second period, and a clean offshore cross-off breeze from the west. The energy is massive at 2006. By Wednesday afternoon, it’s 8ft and the wind has cleaned it up even more. That's the best on offer for the first week, no doubt.
Heads up for Thursday the 9th and into the weekend. The swell jumps to 10ft and bigger. That’s expert-only territory, and by Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th, the wind turns onshore from the ESE, putting a chop on it. That window is for chargers or kite surfers. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
There’s a gap of a few days with less than ideal conditions until Sunday the 12th. That morning, the wind drops to glass again. The swell is a much more manageable 4ft from the south, period at 11 seconds. Energy is a moderate 781. That’s a great little window for a session before it gets messy again.
The second week gets a bit uncertain. Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th are small and clean but nothing to write home about. There’s a promising blip on the radar for the 19th of July. That Sunday morning is looking glassy again, with a 6ft south swell and a 12-second period. Energy is 993. That’s a long-range call so keep your fingers crossed, but it’s got the potential to be a beauty.
For the size and quality of the swell, combined with the glassy windows, Keurbooms is the only game in town.
