The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. Keurbooms is the only game in town this stretch, and for the next 16 days it’s all about this one spot.

We kick off on Thursday the 16th of July with some solid, clean groundswell. A 8ft swell from the southwest, with a period of 13 seconds, sliding in under glassy conditions. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is about average for the time of year – nothing weird there. The energy is pumping hard (2178), so this is for experienced surfers only. It’s a fairly consistent break, and the swell direction is pretty much on the money for optimum. Crowds can happen sometimes, but with this size, it’ll thin out the herd.

Friday the 17th keeps the goods coming. Morning glass again, 8ft SW swell, 12 seconds, still strong energy (1710). Afternoon drops a touch to 7ft SW, 11 seconds, but still clean and glassy (1187). This is a solid little run of quality.

Saturday the 18th sees the swell back off a bit. Morning session is 4ft from the south, 12 seconds, glassy – cleaner, smaller, more manageable. Afternoon picks up to 5ft SW, 10 seconds, still glassy. Good for intermediates now.

Sunday the 19th gets a bit messy. Morning is cross-shore with 5ft SW, 12 seconds, and the wind’s not helping. Afternoon though, the wind swings west at 12 mph, cross-offshore, and the swell bumps up to 8ft SW, 9 seconds – energy’s up (1316), but it’s a bit junky.

Monday the 20th is a standout morning. Clear skies, glassy, 8ft SW swell, 11 seconds, energy at 1597. This is the best of the first week. Afternoon turns onshore, so get it early.

Tuesday the 21st is onshore and messy, with a very long period swell (14 seconds) from the SSW. That kind of period can make a beach setup like Keurbooms a bit straight and tricky. Wind’s not doing any favours.

Now, from Wednesday the 22nd through to Sunday the 26th, we’ve got a massive pulse of swell. Swell heights are 10ft to 15ft, with extreme energy readings (6225 up to 11083). This is way too big for this break – only for absolute experts, and even then, it’s a washing machine. Winds are generally favorable, but the size just overpowers the spot. This stretch is more for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Monday the 27th brings it back down to 8ft SSW, 14 seconds, glassy morning – energy still substantial (3102). This is a solid day for experienced surfers again. Afternoon gets choppy with a 12 mph cross-onshore wind.

Tuesday the 28th is a mixed bag. Morning is light cross-onshore with 7ft SW, 16 seconds – that long period might make it a bit walled. But Tuesday afternoon turns glassy again, 7ft SW, 15 seconds, energy 2451. That’s a nice session.

Wednesday the 29th is a true standout. Morning glass, calm wind, 7ft SSW swell, and a massive 19-second period. That’s very long-period groundswell, and at a point setup like Keurbooms, it’ll be groomed and powerful. Energy is 4692. This is the best of the whole run. Afternoon gets bigger again (10ft) and starts to be too much.

Thursday the 30th has a clean offshore wind in the afternoon, 7ft SSW, 13 seconds, and energy at 1844. Good, clean, fun waves for experienced surfers.

Friday the 31st is the last day in the window. Morning is onshore and weak, but afternoon turns glassy with 5ft from the ESE, 9 seconds – small, clean, not much energy (805). It’s a fizzle, but a nice one.

So, the standout sessions are definitely Monday the 20th morning and Wednesday the 29th morning. That 29th morning with the 19-second period and glassy conditions is the one to circle.

Rusty.
