The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, because I’ve been staring at the charts for the Keurbooms stretch and it’s a wild ride ahead. Let’s break it down.
First up, the water here is running *much* colder than normal for this time of year – we’re talking a full 56°F with a whopping -8°F anomaly. That’s proper unusual, so if you’re paddling out at Keurbooms, you’ll be wanting a thick wetsuit or a good bootie. The swell energy is off the charts early on, with readings up to 5171 (combined energy), which is seriously strong stuff.
Right out of the gate, Thursday the 20th morning hits with a massive 13 ft SSW swell, but honestly, she’s too big. That’s a solid “too big for this break” call, despite the cross-on wind being light. The afternoon cleans up with glassy conditions and an 12 ft SW swell, but again, that’s a wall of water for this spot. Not for the faint-hearted.
Friday the 21st drops off to a more manageable 8 ft SW, but the wind is onshore in the morning and cross-on in the afternoon, making it messy. The Saturday the 22nd window is actually a bit of a sleeper: morning has a clean cross-off breeze with 6 ft SSW swell, and the afternoon is clean with 6 ft SW – both carry a “very good surf” shout. The energy is still moderate (1021 and 925), so it’s not a monster, but it’s surfable.
Sunday the 23rd is a bit of a letdown – onshore winds and rising swell, not great. Then we hit a lumpy patch from Monday the 24th through to Tuesday the 25th, with swell in the 6 ft to 8 ft range but mostly cross-on or onshore wind. The Tuesday the 25th afternoon swell has a long 16-second period, which is a classic groundswell, but the wind is cross-on, so it’s a bit of a miss.
Now, here’s a standout for you. Wednesday the 26th is a beauty. The morning has a clean cross-off breeze with a 5 ft SSW swell, and the afternoon is even cleaner – cross-off wind, 4 ft SW swell. That’s proper clean, small but fun with very good conditions. The energy is light (719 and 959), but the wind is your friend. This is your go-to for a quiet, glassy session.
Thursday the 27th is small and glassy in the afternoon (3 ft SW, glass), but it’s tiny. Then we get a real treat for the experienced crew: Friday the 28th afternoon brings a 6 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, clean cross-off wind, and a “excellent surf for experienced surfers” tag. The energy is 1645 – that’s got some legs. Watch out for those long-period swell lines at a point or reef, though; at a beach break, they might stand up too straight.
Saturday the 29th morning is clean with 8 ft SSW, but that’s big, and the afternoon is 10 ft SW – too big again. Sunday the 30th is also too big, with messy onshore winds. Monday the 31st is clean but lumpy, with 8 ft SSW.
Then, the real long-range gem. Wednesday the 2nd of September morning – over a week away, so keep a loose eye on it – is looking absolutely unreal. Glassy conditions, calm wind, an 8 ft SW swell with a 15-second period, and energy at 3184. The call is “excellent surf for experienced surfers.” That’s a groundswell with serious power, and the glass means it’ll be a dream. The afternoon is also glassy but 10 ft SW, which is expert territory.
Thursday the 3rd of September is too big again, with 12 ft and 10 ft SW. Friday the 4th of September is back to marginal with cross-shore wind.
So, if you’re picking one or two sessions: Wednesday 26th August is your small, clean, fun day for all levels. For the big-wave hunters, lock in Wednesday 2nd September morning – that’s a standout for experienced surfers, but a long way out, so don’t hold your breath.
Stay warm, keep your eyes on the horizon, and if you see the water that cold, you’ll know it’s real.
Rusty.
