The Lowdown
Alright man, let’s talk Keurbooms. We’ve got some serious swell coming, but it’s not all going to be rideable for the average surfer.
The best bet on the whole chart is Thursday the 27th of August, when the wind goes glass in the afternoon. You’ll have clean 1.6m south swell at 14 seconds, packing plenty of punch. That’s your window.
The early stuff is sketchy. Friday the 21st is blown out. Saturday the 22nd cleans up with a drop in size to 1.3m to 1.6m out of the SSW and SW, cross-off winds keep it tidy, but it’s only a moderate energy day.
Sunday the 23rd has a 2.5m SW swell but onshore wind ruins it. Monday the 24th is small and clean but weak.
Tuesday the 25th brings a 3.0m SW groundswell from 14 seconds – too big for this spot, and the wind is onshore. Wednesday the 26th is a washout with short-period windswell.
Then Thursday the 27th afternoon: 1.6m south swell, 14-second period, glassy conditions. That’s the day. The file calls it excellent for experienced surfers.
Friday the 28th stays clean with an offshore breeze and a 1.1m SW swell from 14 seconds. Small but clean.
Saturday the 29th is 1.4m with a very long 15-second period – expect well-shaped waves but long waits between sets. Good for a point break setup though.
Sunday the 30th bumps up to 2.1m SW with a clean cross-off breeze – solid but pushing the limits.
The first days of September are ugly. The 31st is choppy onshore junk. Tuesday the 1st is cross-on with short period swell. Wednesday the 2nd is clean but big at 2.1m.
Then from the 3rd to the 5th of September, it’s a full-on swell event. 3.0m, 4.5m, then 5.0m SW groundswell with 15 to 16-second periods. Energy readings are off the charts – over 10,000. All of these are flagged as too big for Keurbooms. That’s big-wave territory only.
So, don’t get caught out by the big stuff. Target the afternoon of the 27th through the 28th for the cleanest, most enjoyable surf.
Rusty.
