The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about Keurbooms. This spot is exposed to the swell, and it likes a SE direction, but we’re seeing a lot of SW groundswell coming through. That’s a bit of a mismatch, but when it all comes together, this place can be magic.

The water is running at 56°F right now, which is a massive 8°F colder than normal for this time of year. That’s super unusual – you’ll want a thick wetsuit, no doubt.

The first surf kicks off on Wednesday, August 19th. We’ve got a solid 8ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-shore, and the energy is pumping at 2213 (moderate). The conditions are a bit rough. It’s a day for the experienced crew to get a feel for it, but it’s not the best.

Thursday, August 20th, is where things get interesting. The swell jumps to 12ft from the SW, with a period of 13 seconds, and the energy is massive – 4583 in the morning, 3627 in the afternoon. That’s strong. The wind goes glassy in the afternoon, which is a dream. But – and this is a big but – that 12ft is pushing into the “too big for beginners” territory, and it’s well over 8ft, so this is strictly for experts. The break is fairly consistent, and with that glassy afternoon wind, the sets will be clean and powerful. If you’re an expert, Thursday afternoon is one of the true standouts. Crowds are possible here, so get out there early.

Friday the 21st drops back to 7ft, but the wind goes cross-on and the energy drops. It’s marginal. Saturday the 22nd has a drop too, with 5-6ft swell, but the wind goes cross-off, which cleans it up. The energy is down around 860-975 (moderate), but it’s a decent clean option for the less demanding surfer.

The next big pulse comes back on Sunday, August 23rd, with 10ft SW swell and 13-second period. Energy is back up to 3135. This is again too big for most, and the wind is cross-on. It’s a powerful, heavy day for experts only.

Monday, August 24th, is a real gem. The morning has 7ft SW, but by the afternoon, the swell drops to 4ft, the period stretches to 15 seconds (very long period groundswell), and the wind goes glassy. The energy is moderate at 1040, but the quality is excellent. That long period at a beach/river setup can make it break a bit straight, but with glassy conditions, it’s a treat for experienced surfers. This is another standout.

Looking ahead, the 25th and 26th bring a mix. Tuesday the 25th is onshore and choppy, but Wednesday, August 26th, is beautiful – glassy conditions, 7ft SW swell, long 15-second period, and energy sitting at 2001. This is another excellent day for experienced surfers. The wind is off the land, so it’ll be clean. This is a true standout.

After that, the 27th and 28th are a bit of a mixed bag, with smaller swell and some cross-on wind. The 28th afternoon does clean up with an 8ft SW swell and cross-off wind, energy at 2053, so that’s a good option.

The 29th of August holds well with 7-8ft SW, long period, and cross-off wind. Clean and powerful.

Then we hit a bit of a lull. The 30th of August is poor – onshore wind, choppy. The 31st is a big day with 8ft swell and 16-second period, but the wind is strong and cross-on, making it a messy, poor day. The 1st of September (Tuesday) is glassy again with 7ft SW, 14-second period, and 1870 energy – excellent for those who know what they’re doing.

Finally, the 3rd of September is a massive pulse: 16ft SW swell, 13-second period, and energy that’s off the charts at 8982. That’s extremely strong, and it’s way too big for this spot. Only the most hardcore experts should even think about it, and even then, it’s dangerous.

So, in summary: the best on offer are Thursday, August 20th afternoon (glassy, 12ft, expert-only), Monday, August 24th afternoon (glassy, 4ft, long period, excellent quality), and Wednesday, August 26th (glassy, 7ft, long period, excellent quality). Get on those.
