Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’m looking at a pretty quiet stretch ahead for our little corner of the world. We’ve got a solid run of days with nothing much doing at Vetchs Reef, so don't rush to grab your board just yet.
The first glimmer of something comes on Monday, 6th July. The swell creeps up to 3 ft from the SE with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a moderate 372. But the wind is a light cross-onshore, so while it’s not total junk, it’s very ordinary. The more interesting window opens up from Tuesday, 14th July, when we start seeing some bigger numbers. That Tuesday morning, the swell pushes to 5 ft from the ESE with a 10-second period, and the energy jumps to 492. The wind is cross-off, which keeps the surface clean, but it’s a bit ordinary and only really for the advanced crew. The real standout, the one that gets my heart beating a little faster, is Thursday, 16th July morning. The swell hits 6 ft from the ESE (10-second period), and the combined energy is a solid 785. That’s a lot of push for this reef. The catch is the wind is a light cross-onshore from the NNE, so it’ll have a few little ripples, but that’s a lot of wave to play with. Given the size, this one’s strictly for experts.
Now, the bad news: before that, from the start of the period all the way through to Monday, 13th July, it’s a long dry spell. Every session is scored as poor surf – mostly small, weak, and onshore. After the 16th, it drops off again through the weekend into the second week, with tiny 2 ft to 3 ft swells and messy winds, so don't plan a trip around that.
A word on the water: it’s about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The best bet, if you’re an experienced charger, is Thursday, 16th July morning when the 6 ft ESE swell lines up. It’s big, it’s got energy, but it’s not perfect. Still, it’s the best we’ve got in the whole outlook.
Rusty.
