The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s break it down.

We’ve got a run of swell at Robberg, but it’s a tricky one. This spot is a beach and reef setup, and it’s inconsistent, so you gotta be picky. The water is a freezing 55° with a massive anomaly of 8° colder than usual, so that’s way colder than normal for this time of year – bring the thick rubber.

The first real look comes on Tuesday, August 18th. Tuesday afternoon is the one. You’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the SW, with a long 12-second period, and the wind goes glassy out of the south. That’s clean, clean surf, but at that size, it’s one for the experienced crew. The combined energy is pumping at 1928, which is solid moderate energy.

Wednesday the 19th looks frustrating. The swell holds at 8ft, but the wind swings cross-on from the WSW, making it choppy and messy. Not worth the paddle.

Thursday the 20th brings a bigger pulse – 12ft from the SSW, with a 13-second period. The combined energy jumps to 4664, which is strong. Thursday morning has a light cross-onshore breeze, but it’s still a bit lumpy. Thursday afternoon the wind goes onshore from the SSE, which is a problem. This is big, powerful surf, and with the wind not cooperating, it’s only for the hardcore, if anyone.

Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are a write-off. Friday is small and cross-shore, Saturday morning gets an 8ft swell but the wind is a strong cross-shore that turns into a 25 mph howler in the afternoon. 15ft and 4722 combined energy, but with that wind, it’s a washing machine – more of a kite session than a paddle.

Sunday the 23rd is a chance. Sunday afternoon goes glassy again, with a 10ft SW swell and a 12-second period. Combined energy is 2513. That’s clean, but it’s still big, so only for the experienced.

The middle of the week from Monday the 24th drops right off. Small swells, cross-on winds, nothing to get excited about until Wednesday the 26th. Wednesday morning is a gem – 6ft from the SW, 13-second period, with a clean cross-off breeze from the NNE. Then Wednesday afternoon it goes glassy with an ENE breeze. 5ft and 13 seconds, combined energy 1340. That’s the kind of mellow, clean session that suits most surfers.

Thursday the 27th is small again, but then Friday the 28th of August has a weird one. Friday morning is glassy with a 4ft swell from the SW, but a period of 19 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. Combined energy is 1417. At a beach and reef break like Robberg, that long period will make it break a bit straight, but it’s clean. Could be a few good ones if you pick the right bank.

Saturday the 29th has a glassy morning with a 8ft SW swell, 15-second period, combined energy 2354. That’s a solid, clean, powerful option for the experienced.

The final week gets messy again. Sunday the 30th is blown out with 19 mph cross-shore winds and 12ft swell. Not good. Monday the 31st of August has a glassy morning, 8ft from the SW, 13 seconds, combined energy 1975 – that’s another clean, solid window for the skilled.

The absolute best of the run is Wednesday the 26th of August, with those clean, glassy conditions and a friendly size. And if you want a bigger, cleaner challenge, Tuesday afternoon the 18th is a close second. The rest is a lot of wind and chop.

Rusty.
