Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for our stretch of coast.
Alright, straight up, there’s plenty of action on the menu, but you’re going to have to pick your moments. The water's sitting at 63°, which is about par for the course this time of year, nothing unusual.
Saturday, July 4th kicks things off with a bang at Robberg. We’ve got a solid 7ft ESE groundswell with a long 12-second period rolling in. The combined wave energy is pumping (1316), and with the wind going totally glassy in the morning and staying glassy in the afternoon, this is going to be some clean, powerful stuff. This is for experienced surfers only, though – it’s got some punch. Saturday morning is the real standout of the weekend.
Sunday, July 5th sees the swell ease back to 5ft from the ESE (716 combined energy). The morning has a light cross-off breeze, keeping it clean, making for some very good, more manageable waves. The afternoon gets a bit cross-on and drops off – not really worth rushing for.
Monday, July 6th morning throws another solid one at us: a 6ft SW groundswell (1193 combined energy) with glassy conditions. This is another excellent window for experienced surfers. The afternoon, however, turns into a bit of a chop-fest with onshore wind – a write-off.
From Tuesday, July 7th through to Friday, July 10th, a large SW swell builds in. We’re talking 7ft to 10ft (combined energy hitting 3220 on Thursday morning). This is serious, powerful water with periods up to 14 seconds. The problem is the wind – it’s mostly cross or cross-on, leaving a chop on it. The quality is marginal at best. This is big, messy, and for experts only if they are feeling froggy. It’s a proper paddle out.
Saturday, July 11th the swell drops a little to 7ft (1364 combined energy), but the wind stiffens up from the east at 12-16 mph. It’s cross-shore chop, making it feel more like a kitesurfing day than a clean paddle session.
After a bit of a lull, Sunday, July 12th brings a nice reset. The swell drops to 4ft from the East (630 combined energy), and the wind goes totally glassy all day. This is a return to clean, fun surf. The period is a shorter 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit more playful and less of a grind than the big SW stuff.
Monday, July 13th the energy drops right off. Swell falls below 3ft, and it’s choppy from a 12 mph wind. Not worth a look.
There’s a lull until Wednesday, July 15th. The morning of the 15th sees a 5ft SE swell (646 combined energy) with a light cross-off breeze, making for some very good, clean waves. It’s a solid choice if you can get out.
Sunday, July 19th is worth a mention to wrap things up. The afternoon turns glassy again with a 4ft SW swell (488 combined energy). It’s not huge, but clean conditions should deliver some fun, peeling lines on the reef.
So, to sum it up: Saturday July 4th morning is your top-tier, glassy, powerful groundswell session for the experienced crew. For a more relaxed, clean surf in the second week, keep an eye on Sunday July 12th for the glassy conditions and the morning of Wednesday July 15th for the cleaner longboard or fish waves.
Stay frothy, people.
Rusty.
