Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got one spot on the radar for the next couple of weeks, and it’s a bit of a wildcard.
The surf window opens up on Tuesday, July 7th, but it’s a pretty slow start. The first few days are all about building energy, but the conditions are often messy. The real standout is going to be the tail end of the first week and into the second weekend. There’s a big gap with nothing worthwhile after the 22nd, so we’re looking at a solid run of action up to the 20th, then it fades.
Tuesday, July 7th kicks things off with a 7ft SW swell, but it’s a cross-shore breeze and a bit of a chop, so it’s not firing. The afternoon is better – the swell drops to 6ft, the wind goes glassy, and the energy is still strong (1113). It’s a decent session for experienced surfers, but it’s not the best of the run.
Wednesday, July 8th is a write-off. The swell jumps to 8ft and 8ft, but the wind is all over the place with a cross-shore, making it lumpy. The energy is high (1884 and 1858), but it’s messy.
Thursday, July 9th is a big day for size, with 10ft SSW swell, but the wind is still cross-shore. The energy is pumping (3614 and 3066), but it’s not clean. It’s a heavy, powerful ocean that’s going to be a challenge.
Friday, July 10th is where it gets interesting. The morning is the best of the first week. A 12ft SSW swell with glassy, offshore breeze. The combined energy is massive (4081). This is big, powerful, long-period groundswell (13 seconds). For a spot like Robberg, a beach and reef setup, that long period means it’s going to be a bit walled up and straight on the beach, but the reef sections will be reeling. This is for experts only – 12ft is serious. The afternoon drops back to 10ft with a cross-shore, so get it early.
Saturday, July 11th and Sunday, July 12th are a wind-down. Swell drops to 7ft and then 5ft, but the wind goes cross-onshore and choppy. Not worth the paddle.
Monday, July 14th and Tuesday, July 15th bring a new swell from the ESE, but it’s short period (8-9 seconds) and the wind is a cross-shore mess. The energy is moderate (904 and 704). Skip it.
Now, the real standout of the whole outlook is Saturday, July 18th and Sunday, July 19th. This is the one to circle.
Saturday, July 18th morning: a 7ft SW swell, glassy as glass, with a very long 14-second period. The energy is strong (1672). The afternoon is even better for size: 8ft SW, still glassy, and 13-second period, energy hitting 2002. This is excellent, clean, powerful surf. The long period means it’ll be a bit picky at the beach, but the reef at Robberg will be holding some beautiful, lined-up waves. Crowds are a *sometimes* thing here, but on a day like this, expect a few locals out.
Sunday, July 19th morning: 8ft SW, glassy, 12-second period, energy 1811. Another top-tier session. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-on breeze, but the morning is the pick.
Monday, July 20th has a 10ft E swell but the wind is cross-on. The afternoon is better: 7ft from ESE, glassy, and a 10-second period. Clean and fun, but not as powerful as the weekend.
After that, it’s a slow fade. Tuesday, July 21st and Wednesday, July 22nd are small, weak, and the wind is onshore or cross-shore. The energy drops to 600-700 range, and it’s a no-go.
So, the bottom line: Friday morning, July 10th is the big-wave, expert-only standout. But for the best combination of size, power, and clean conditions, Saturday, July 18th and Sunday, July 19th are the true winners. Get out there, but be ready for a crowd.
Rusty.
