The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Robberg.

First thing to say, Robberg is a beach and reef setup that’s exposed to the swell. It’s an inconsistent break, so we can’t just rock up any time, but when it’s on, it’s on. The water is sitting at 63°, which is about 0.9° cooler than average for this time of year, so pretty much what you’d expect. The juice here is a solid SW groundswell train that’s gonna roll through, but the timing of the wind and the size of the swell will be the real story.

We’re starting off with a bit of a limp start. Wednesday the 15th is nothing to write home about. The morning has a weak 3ft cross-shore easterly windswell, with a combined energy of only 317 (weak). The afternoon sees a jump to 7ft from the SW, but it’s still cross-shore winds and a low score. Not worth paddling out for.

Thursday the 16th morning is where it gets interesting. That’s the first real standout. The swell is a solid 8ft from the SW with a 14-second period, giving us a strong wave energy of 2848 (moderate). The wind is glassy out of the WSW. That’s a big call for clean conditions. This is a proper groundswell, and it’ll be a bit heavy for beginners—over 8ft is expert territory. For the experienced crew, this is the best morning of the first week.

Friday the 17th morning is also glassy with a 8ft SW swell at 12 seconds, wave energy at 1763. It’s still solid, but the period is dropping a bit. Still a great session. The weekend fades a bit. Saturday the 18th drops right off to 4ft, and Sunday the 19th picks up again to 6ft, but the wind is cross-shore and not clean.

Monday the 20th morning is another glassy window with a 6ft SSW swell, wave energy at 887. It’s quality, but the energy is dropping.

Now, the absolute standout for the whole run is Tuesday the 21st. The afternoon sees a massive 16ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and the combined energy hits 10738 (very strong). That’s a huge, powerful groundswell. The wind is light onshore from the S, but the sheer size means it’s only for the most experienced. This is a dangerous, expert-only day. The morning is also solid at 13ft.

Wednesday the 22nd afternoon cleans up nicely with a glassy 8ft SW swell at 13 seconds (2541 energy). That’s a much more manageable wave for the strong intermediate crew.

But the real score for the experts comes on Thursday the 23rd. The afternoon is glassy, dead calm, with a 16ft SW groundswell at a very long 15 seconds. The combined energy is 10317 (very strong). The conditions are described as exceptional for expert surfers. This is a once-in-a-forecast kind of day. The long period will make it very lined up, and that’s got serious power.

Friday the 24th morning is still glassy with a 12ft SW swell, still very strong, but the size is dropping. The week after that fades out. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are smaller, with cross-shore breezes. Monday the 27th morning has a glassy 5ft SW swell, nice for a cruise. The rest of the run into the 30th is messy with strong cross-shore winds and rain, so it’s time to hang the wetsuit up.

So, the standouts: you want the glassy, clean 8ft swell on Thursday the 16th morning, and the absolute death-or-glory session on Thursday the 23rd afternoon for the experts. Everything else is a sideshow. And remember, Robberg is inconsistent, so when it’s pumping, you’ve got to be on it.

Rusty.
