The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's dive into what's shaping up for the next couple of weeks at Robberg.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The early part is a bit messy, but if you’re an experienced surfer, there are some absolute gems tucked in there, especially in the second week. The water temp is sitting right around average for the time of year at 64°F, so nothing unusual there.
Friday the 17th kicks things off with a clean start. Morning sees some clouds but glassy conditions with an 8ft SW swell (12-second period) and a massive combined energy of 1710. This is solid, powerful stuff, but at 8ft it’s pushing into expert-only territory, especially on a beach and reef setup that's inconsistent. The afternoon goes even glassier as the wind drops to zero, with the swell dropping slightly to 7ft. This is excellent, powerful surf for those with the skills.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a write-off. The wind swings onshore and cross-shore, turning the 4ft to 8ft swells into a choppy, messy affair. A tough couple of days to bother paddling out.
Monday the 20th is worth a look, though. Morning brings clear skies and glassy wind again, with a nice 7ft SW swell (9-second period). The combined energy is 1177, and while it’s still on the bigger side, that glassy surface makes it a much more appealing prospect for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets a little crossed up.
Tuesday the 21st is a proper standout for the first week. Morning is glassy with a 4ft swell, but check out the period: 15 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, full of energy, and it’s coming from the SSW. The combined energy is 932. This is the kind of swell that will wrap beautifully around the point and reef at Robberg. It’s clean, it’s got power, and for a spot that’s usually inconsistent, this is a real moment to be there.
Wednesday the 22nd gets bigger again with an 8ft SW swell (13-second period) and energy jumping to 2325. But the cross-shore wind will make it a bit lumpy. Still, that's a lot of water moving.
Thursday the 23rd is another gem. A huge 10ft SW swell (12-second period) with energy at 2907, and the morning has a light cross-offshore breeze from the east making it clean. This is big, powerful, and clean – pure adrenaline for the experts. The afternoon gets a little crossed up.
Now for the second week, this is where it gets really interesting.
Friday the 24th is, without a doubt, the biggest standout of the entire outlook. The morning is glassy, with a massive 12ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is an astonishing 5297. This is big, powerful, and perfectly clean. It’s only for experts, but for them, this is an exceptional, likely epic session. The afternoon sees the wind turn straight onshore, so hit it early.
Saturday the 25th gets blown out by strong cross-onshore winds. The 12ft and 8ft swells will be a complete mess. Not worth it.
Sunday the 26th has a cleaner look in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze and a 6ft SSW swell, but the real story is the afternoon: a 10ft SSW swell with a monster 17-second period and energy of 5818. The wind is light cross-shore. That's serious, long-period groundswell. At Robberg, that kind of period can make the waves stand up tall and fast on the reef.
Monday the 27th morning brings glassy perfection again with a 8ft SW swell (14-second period, 4266 energy). Another excellent morning for the experienced surfer. The afternoon gets a bit crossed.
The rest of the week sees the swell slowly drop back down from 6ft to 4ft, with onshore winds picking up through Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th looking cleaner with a cross-offshore breeze again. Thursday afternoon is actually a sneaky good one: 6ft SW swell, light offshore wind, and energy of 1010. Clean, fun-sized waves.
Finally, Friday the 31st and into Saturday the 1st of August, we see a strong offshore wind pattern develop. Friday morning has an 12ft SW swell with a moderate offshore wind (16 mph) from the NNW – that’s clean, big, and powerful (4331 energy). Saturday morning keeps the offshore wind (19 mph) with an 8ft SW swell. The afternoon of Saturday is the real standout of this last segment: 10ft from the SSW, gentle offshore wind, and energy of 2363. Clean, powerful, and glassy offshore. A fantastic way to end the outlook.
Overall, the clear standout session is the morning of Friday the 24th of July – that combination of glassy wind, an 12ft swell, and a 16-second period is as good as it gets for the experts. Tuesday the 21st of July morning is the top pick for a cleaner, slightly more manageable long-period swell.
Signing off, Rusty.
