The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a good look at what Robberg has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a real mixed bag, but there are some absolute gems hidden in there if you’re patient.
The water temperature is sitting at 57°F right now, which is a whopping 7°F colder than usual for this time of year. That’s seriously unusual, so you’re going to need a thick steamer and maybe some booties to stay out there for any length of time.
The immediate outlook is pretty grim. Friday the 21st and the whole weekend are a write-off with messy winds and marginal conditions. We’ve got a long wait ahead until the first real standout.
That standout is Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. The wind is going glassy out of the SE, and we’ve got a solid 10ft swell rolling in from the SW with a long 14-second period, giving a massive combined energy of 3150. This is proper groundswell, and for a beach-and-reef setup like Robberg, that long period can make it break a bit straight, but with clean conditions like that, it’s going to be firing. This is for the experienced crew only – 10ft is too big for beginners. The afternoon stays big but gets a bit of a cross-on wind, so the morning is the window.
We get a small lull before the next big one. On the morning of Sunday the 30th of August, we see a huge 15ft SW swell rolling in, with a 13-second period and combined energy of 6553. That’s very strong wave energy. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’ll be lumpy, but the real magic happens that afternoon. The wind goes glassy, the swell holds at 13ft, and the conditions are described as exceptional for expert surfers. This is another beast for the big-wave chargers only.
Then the following week, we get another absolute monster on Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning shows a 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 7315 – that’s the biggest energy reading of the whole period. The wind is light and onshore, so it won’t be clean, but the power will be there for those who can handle it. The afternoon also holds at 13ft but gets a cross-on breeze.
Look, it’s a season of waiting for the big days. The standout is undeniably Tuesday the 25th of August for the clean, glassy conditions on that 10ft groundswell. The Sunday the 30th of August afternoon is also a seriously good call for experts. If you’re looking for smaller stuff, you’ll be disappointed for the most part. This is big-wave territory over the next two weeks.
Stay warm, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
Rusty.
