The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about Robberg. This is a beach and reef setup, and it’s a spot that’s pretty inconsistent—so when it comes alive, you’ve got to be ready to go. The water is sitting at 57°, which is a full 7° colder than normal for this time of year. That’s a serious bite, so you’re going to need a thick suit, booties, gloves, the whole deal.

The first few days are a bit of a struggle. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a messy mix of cross-shore winds and lumpy chop. The swell is there, about 6ft to 8ft from the SW, but it’s just not clean. You’re fighting the wind. Monday the 24th is more of the same; light cross-onshore breezes keep things bumpy. The wave energy is moderate, but it’s not translating into good waves.

Now, here’s the good stuff. Tuesday morning the 25th is a real standout. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and the swell hits 8ft from the SW with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong. This is a big, powerful swell, so it’s strictly for experienced surfers only—over 8ft is expert territory. For a point or reef break, that long period will set up some beautiful, long lines. The morning is the session.

Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are a mixed bag. Wednesday gets hammered by a fresh cross-shore breeze, chopping it up. But Thursday afternoon, the wind drops to glassy again with a 6ft SSW swell. That’s a much more manageable size, and the energy is still solid. Another excellent window for the experienced crew.

Friday the 28th is a sneaky good day. The morning is marginal, but the afternoon brings a clean, cross-offshore wind with a 5ft S swell. That’s clean, shoulder-high waves with a light breeze grooming them. A good option for a wider range of surfers.

Saturday the 29th is a wild card. The morning is a strong offshore—25 mph from the NNW—but the swell is tiny at 3ft, so it’s a paddling nightmare. The afternoon, however, is a beast. An 12ft SW swell rolls in, with very strong energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore, making it clean. This is huge, powerful, and for experts only. It’s a standout for sheer size.

From the 30th of August through the 1st of September, the swell hangs around the 5ft to 8ft mark, but the wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, keeping the quality just okay. There are some windows, but nothing to get too excited about.

Now, look ahead to the 3rd of September. That Thursday morning sees a massive 12ft SW swell with a period of 16 seconds—that’s about as long as it gets. The wave energy is huge. The wind is calm, but there’s a tiny bit of ripple. This is a long-range standout, promising but a bit less certain. If it comes together, it’ll be an absolute monster of a day for the experts. Then Sunday the 6th of September, the wind goes glassy again with a 10ft SW swell and strong energy. That’s another excellent session for the experienced surfer.

Overall, Robberg rewards patience. The best bet is Tuesday morning the 25th for that glassy, long-period groundswell. And if you’re an expert, circle the 3rd of September as a potential date with a big, clean swell. The weekends in between are mostly a washout or too big for the average punter.
