The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the cards for Rodiles - Main Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, things are looking pretty bleak for a wave. We’ve got a dry spell until Thursday the 20th of August. That’s a solid few days of tiny, weak slop with onshore winds making a mess of things. The water temp is running about 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one nice thing if you’re just floating around.
The first sign of life shows up on Thursday morning the 20th. It’s not a standout, but it’s the start. You’ll see a glassy morning with a 4ft swell from the NNW at 11 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (269). It’s clean, but at this size, don’t expect anything special. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 4ft from the same direction, with a 12-second period, but the wind goes cross-shore so the surface gets a little bumpy. Energy picks up (429).
Friday the 21st morning is actually a sneaky good window if you can get out. Light cross-offshore wind from the WNW, swell at 4ft from the N with a 10-second period, and solid wave energy (455). It’s clean and has a bit of push. The sets will be well-spaced with that period, making the paddle out easier. The afternoon holds similar energy but gets a bit more cross-shore wind, so the morning is the call.
After that, we hit another lull. Saturday the 22nd through to Wednesday the 27th of August is mostly a write-off. The swell drops under 3ft for much of it, winds turn onshore, and what little energy is there is weak. A couple of glassy moments on Sunday the 23rd afternoon and Monday the 24th afternoon offer some tiny, weak waves if you’re desperate for a splash, but it’s ordinary at best.
Now, get ready for the real fireworks. The absolute standout is Saturday the 29th of August. This is the one you circle on the calendar. Early morning, we’ve got glassy conditions with a massive 10ft swell from the NW at 13 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell with incredible energy (4221). This is expert territory though, over 8ft, and with period over 11 seconds, it’s going to be powerful. With a long-period NW swell, Rodiles can handle it, but be prepared for big, shifting peaks and strong currents. For the experienced crew, this will be a special session. The afternoon stays solid at 10ft but gets a light cross-shore breeze, still very good.
Friday the 28th of August morning is also a major shout. It’s glassy, 8ft from the NW with an 8-second period, giving very strong energy (973). It's right on that edge for big surf. If you’re a solid intermediate, the morning glass-off will be your best bet before it gets too lumpy in the afternoon as the swell builds.
The first week of September sees the swell dropping but still surfable. Tuesday the 1st of September morning has clean, cross-offshore wind with a 5ft NW swell at 11 seconds (629 energy). It’s a nice finisher to the period.
Overall, the first half of the forecast is mostly a wait, with a few functional windows. The second week is where it gets serious, with the 28th and 29th being the real standouts for experienced surfers. Expect crowds to be likely on those peak days as word gets out.
Rusty.
