The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – the first week and a half is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with nothing to get excited about. From now through until the 21st of July, the surf is tiny, with most of the energy sitting below 100 (weak), and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making a mess of what little bump there is. It’s a real beach-chair-and-a-book kind of stretch.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Tuesday, the 22nd of July. Rodiles - Main Beach finally gets a bit of a pulse. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the NE, with a period of 6 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the WNW. That’s clean, and the water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 69°. The energy is moderate (98), but it’s surfable. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while.
The real standout, though, comes on the 26th of July. The Sunday morning session at Rodiles - Main Beach is the one to circle on your calendar. We’re looking at a 4 ft groundswell from the NW with a solid 11-second period. That’s a long-period swell with some real grunt—the combined energy is a strong 326. The only catch is the wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the E, so it won’t be glassy, but it’ll be cleaner than most of what we’ve had. The swell direction is a solid match for the optimum NW. This is the best on offer by a long shot, but keep in mind the long period will make it break a bit straighter at the beach, so look for a sandbank that’s working.
The 27th of July morning is another decent option with a 3 ft NW swell and a clean cross-offshore wind, but the energy drops to 188 (moderate). It’s a good backup if the 26th is too crowded – and it’s likely to be a busy one.
Bottom line: the first 9 days are a write-off, but the last week of the forecast has some promise. The 26th of July is the one to aim for, but keep an eye on the long-range forecasts as they firm up.
Rusty.
