The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Rodiles are shaping up to be a real battle against the wind. It’s a frustrating stretch for a spot that usually has so much going for it. For the first nine days, from Sunday morning the 19th right through to the Monday afternoon of the 27th, the surf is just plain poor. That’s a long gap of nothing but chop and wind-affected dribble. We start with tiny, weak 1ft waves from the NW with a short period, and then the swell does build, but it’s all cross-onshore breeze. The energy picks up on Monday the 20th with a chest-high 5ft swell from the NNE, but the wind is on it, making a mess of things. The combined energy hits 394 (moderate) that afternoon, but it’s completely blown out. That pattern sticks around for days – wave energy goes from weak to moderate, but the wind just never gives us a break.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, no big surprises there.
The first tiny glimmer of hope comes on Monday morning, the 27th of July. The swell drops right off to a knee-high 1ft, but for the first time in a while, we get glassy conditions. The period is a long 11 seconds from the NNW, so it’s a clean little groundswell. The combined energy is only 73 (weak), so it’s not a day for a proper session, but it’s surfable and very ordinary. Not a standout, just a break from the chop.
The real interest, if you can call it that, is further out. The weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August sees a big lump of energy. On Saturday morning, the 1st, the swell is head-high at 5ft from the NNW, with a period of 10 seconds and a combined energy reading of 517 (strong). That’s a lot of water moving. But here’s the kicker – the wind is a stubborn cross-onshore from the E at 9 mph. It’s going to be a messy, choppy beast. At that size, it’s not beginner-friendly, and with the onshore wind, it’s really only a day for the experienced guys who don’t mind a fight. The same goes for the following Sunday morning, the 2nd, with 4ft swell and more cross-onshore wind. The setup is a beach break, so with that much swell and poor wind, it might actually be more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfing.
So, looking at the whole 16-day window, there’s no true standout. If you’re desperate, the glassy morning of the 27th of July offers the cleanest conditions, but it’s tiny. The bigger swell at the start of August has the power, but the wind ruins it. Hang in there, folks – it can’t stay this way forever.
Rusty.
