The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Rodiles - Main Beach. The water’s sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – feels nice if you’re not wearing a full suit.
The first real surfable window kicks off Friday morning, 21st of August. We’ve got a clean 6 ft swell from the NNW, with a 10-second period and a nice cross-off breeze out of the west at 9 mph. Wave energy is moderate (544). That’s a solid start – good shape, good wind, and the swell direction is about as close as you can get to the optimum NW. It’s a fairly exposed beach, so it’ll pick up what’s on offer. The water’s a touch warmer than usual, so you won’t need a big suit. This is your standout session for the whole outlook.
After that, the weekend goes flat and messy. Saturday the 22nd drops to 3 ft, cross-on wind from the east at 12 mph, and energy is weak (175). Sunday the 23rd is glassy in the morning but only 3 ft with a 6-second period – that’s just windswell, no punch. Monday the 24th is similar: glassy, small, no power. There’s a real lull here from Saturday through to Wednesday morning – about four days of not much to get excited about.
Wednesday morning the 26th is glassy again but only 3 ft and 6-second period, energy is weak (81). It’s surfable but ordinary. Thursday the 27th morning picks up a bit: 4 ft from the WNW, 8 seconds, cross-off wind from the WSW at 6 mph, energy moderate (233). It’s clean, but the swell’s short period and not big. Then Thursday afternoon the wind picks up to 16 mph from the WNW, swell bumps to 8 ft – that’s getting big and a bit lumpy for the average surfer, more for the experienced crew.
Friday the 28th morning is back to 6 ft, 10 seconds, cross-off wind out of the west at 9 mph, energy moderate (758). That’s a decent morning – clean and punchy. Friday afternoon gets bigger at 7 ft with 11-second period, but the wind is cross-shore from the NW at 12 mph, creating some chop. Energy is strong (1141). That’s a powerful, lumpy afternoon – only for the experienced.
Saturday the 29th morning is a real treat: glassy, 5 ft from the NW, 9-second period, energy moderate (451). That’s clean, fun, and the swell direction is right on the money. This is your second standout – a gorgeous morning session.
After that, things taper off. Sunday the 30th morning is glassy but only 4 ft, 8 seconds, energy low (209). Monday the 31st is clean but small at 4 ft. From the 1st of September onward, it’s mostly small, weak, and onshore – a few clean mornings with 3 ft to 5 ft but nothing to write home about. The energy drops below 100 for most of those days, and by the 5th of September, it’s flat.
So, the best of the 16 days? Friday morning 21st August and Saturday morning 29th August. Both have clean conditions, decent swell, and the right direction. If you can only paddle out once, make it the 29th – glassy, 5 ft, and the crowd is “often” there, so get in early.
