The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Rodiles – Main Beach. It’s going to be a tough wait, but there’s a glimmer of hope at the very end of the forecast.
The short-term outlook is pretty grim. To be honest, we’re looking at a solid week of almost nothing. From now through to the 20th of July, it’s all small, weak, and messy. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, with short periods under 8 seconds, and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore. The water temp is sitting at 20°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only warm thing right now. You’ll be paddling around for nothing. The combined wave energy is barely registering, mostly in the low double digits (53) – weak stuff.
We finally see a pulse of energy showing up on the morning of Tuesday the 21st of July. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the NE, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy shoots up to 369 (moderate), and the wind goes cross-shore from the NNW. It’s still a bit short-period, so it’ll be a bit fat and lumpy, but it’s our first real sign of life. That afternoon the wind swings onshore, so the morning window is the only chance.
Things get a bit more interesting on Friday the 24th of July. A longer-period groundswell shows up from the NW, with a 12 to 13-second period. The swell is small at 2 ft to 3 ft, but the period is long enough to put some shape in the water. The combined energy hits 311 (moderate), and the wind is light and cross-shore. It’s a marginal call, but the quality of the swell is better.
Now, the real standout, and the one that has me a little excited, is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. We’re looking at a solid 6 ft NW groundswell at a 10-second period. The combined energy is a strong 784 (strong). The wind is light and cross-shore from the NW. This is the biggest and most powerful swell of the whole window. However, at 6 ft, it’s pushing into the “too big for beginners” territory, and the period is a bit straight for a beach break, but for the experienced crew, this is the best on offer. The afternoon will still have 5 ft with a gentle cross-chop, but the morning is the pick.
After that, things settle down again. The morning of Monday the 27th of July looks clean with glassy conditions and a 5 ft NW swell at 9 seconds, combined energy of 388 (moderate). The morning of Tuesday the 28th of July also looks good with a clean 4 ft NW swell and light cross-offshore winds. Both are decent, but the wind on the 28th is more favorable.
The long-range call is for the 27th and 28th of July – promising, but less certain. Keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
