G'day, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up: we're in for a long, dry spell for waves here at Rodiles - Main Beach. I'm talking over two weeks with some tiny, weak swell but nothing that's really going to get the heart pumping. The last proper run of good surf is a distant memory, and the wait stretches out for a fair while. However, there is a glimmer of light way out there, one morning that's looking like the real deal. Let's get into it.

For the next nine days, from Saturday the 11th of July right through to the morning of Sunday the 19th of July, it’s a pretty grim picture. Swell is tiny—we're talking 0.7 ft to 3 ft of mostly weak, short-period slop from the NW to NNW. The combined energy is almost non-existent, flirting with values between 8 and 89, which is barely a whisper. The water temp is sitting at 67°, about 1° warmer than usual for the time of year, so that's pretty average. But that’s about the only nice thing I can say. Most sessions are plagued by cross-onshore or onshore winds, or just ridiculously small surf. There are a couple of glassy mornings—like Tuesday the 14th and Thursday the 16th—but with only 0.7 ft to 1 ft of swell and single-digit energy (26 and 15), it's not worth paddling out for. You’d be bobbing around more than surfing. This stretch is a proper blank run. It’s one of those times where the forecast is just showing what the area can be like when it goes quiet.

Then we get a small pulse. On Monday the 20th of July, the swell bumps up a bit: 3 ft in the morning and 4 ft in the afternoon from the NNW. The combined energy climbs to 131 in the afternoon, which is now in the moderate range, but the wind is onshore from the ENE at 6 mph, so it's chopped-out and messy. The score reflects poor conditions. Tuesday the 21st of July morning looks the best of this whole first part, with 3 ft surf, glassy winds from the NNW, and a decent energy reading of 111. But it’s still just surfable waves with very ordinary conditions. Not a standout by any stretch. The wind stays light cross-onshore on the Tuesday afternoon, knocking the quality down again. Wednesday and Thursday (22nd and 23rd) are similar: small glassy mornings but the swell drops off to 2 ft and 4 ft respectively, and the afternoon winds mess it up.

Friday the 24th of July has a bit more push—4 ft from the NW, with energy readings of 234 and 195—but the wind is a moderate breeze from the WNW at 12 mph, which is cross-offshore. Clean, but those winds will be howling, making it a tough paddle and a bumpy ride. Not a great day for the average punter.

Now, hold onto your board, because the real standout is finally on the horizon. The morning of Sunday the 26th of July is your best bet. This is the one. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the NW with a period of 10 seconds—that’s a proper groundswell, meaning better-shaped, more powerful waves with longer lulls between sets. The wind is glassy, a slight air from the NNW. That means perfectly clean, smooth faces. The combined energy reads 406—that's strong wave energy. This is the kind of morning that makes the wait worthwhile. Rodiles - Main Beach is a fairly exposed beach break, but with a 10-second period Northwest swell and glassy conditions, it should set up some decent lines. Keep in mind this spot can get crowded often, so get in early, especially if the forecast holds. This is a solid intermediate-level wave at 4 ft, so not for beginners, but not heavy enough for experts only. It’s the gem in the rough.

The afternoon of the 26th of July sees the onshore winds creep back with a 4 ft swell, so that clean morning window is your clear window.

So, to sum it up: not much happening for the first nine days. You'll be waiting for a while. But that Sunday morning, the 26th of July, is the one to circle on the calendar. It's a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but if the stars align, it'll be a beauty.

Rusty.
