The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Rodiles – Main Beach.
Right, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: the next couple of weeks are a real struggle. We’ve got a long, dry spell of poor surf conditions ahead. The first real glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 28th of July, and even then it’s marginal. Before that, we’re looking at a solid 9-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The energy is weak, the winds are rubbish, and the swell is mostly short-period wind chop.
The water temperature is sitting at 71°, which is a hefty 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a notable anomaly, so you’ll be in for a warm one if you do get in.
The first chance of a wave comes on Monday the 28th of July. The morning shows a 4ft swell from the NNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy hits 349 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-on from the NNW, so it’s not ideal, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while. The call is marginal, tide-dependent, so don’t expect much. This is a fairly exposed beach, but with that short period, it’ll be a bit lumpy. Not a standout, just a possible sneaky session.
The next morning, Tuesday the 29th of July, offers a similar story: 3ft from the NNW with a longer 12-second period, giving 350 (moderate) energy. The wind is a light cross-on from the ENE. Again, it’s marginal. The period is long enough to suggest some better shape, but it’s not clean enough to get excited about.
We then slip back into poor conditions again until Sunday the 2nd of August. That morning shows a 4ft swell from the N (7 seconds) with 104 (moderate) energy. The wind is a light cross-off from the W, which will clean things up. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Nothing to write home about.
So, the honest truth? There are no standouts in this 16-day window. The best you’ll get is a couple of marginal, ordinary mornings right at the end of July. If you’re desperate, the morning of Monday the 28th of July and Tuesday the 29th of July are your only real shots, but keep your expectations low. For the rest of it, the surf is mostly poor, and the setup is more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
Rusty.
