The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good look at what’s on offer for Rodiles.
To be honest, it’s a bit of a slow start. The first week and a bit is pretty much a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, weak swell and onshore or cross-onshore winds messing up the surface. Saturday the 18th to Sunday the 26th of July is mostly poor surf conditions with swell heights barely scraping 1ft to 2ft, and short periods around 3 to 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak, just 7 to 133 (weak to moderate energy). There’s a day on Monday the 20th where the swell kicks up to 6ft to 7ft, but the wind is straight onshore from the ENE, making it a choppy, blown-out mess – not worth paddling out for. The water temperature is sitting at 71°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a notable 5°F anomaly.
Now, things start to get interesting towards the end of the month. The standout window is the last few days of July rolling into the start of August. Thursday the 30th of July is our first real glimmer. The morning brings a clean 4ft swell from the NNW, with a 10-second period (moderate groundswell) and glassy conditions. The combined energy is moderate (355). The wind is glassy, dead calm from the NE. It’s not massive, but it’s clean, and that’s a big win.
The real pick of the bunch, though, is Friday the 31st of July morning. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the NNW, still a solid 10-second period, and the wind is glassy again from the E. The combined energy is strong (489). That’s a fun, clean size for an intermediate surfer, and the glassy conditions will make it smooth. This is the best on offer, hands down. Saturday the 1st of August morning is also very good, with a 5ft NNW swell, glassy SSW winds, and moderate energy (367). That’s a close second.
Be aware, Rodiles is a beach break that is fairly exposed to the NW swell, and it can get crowded – it’s ‘often’ busy, so you’ll want to be early for those glassy windows. The period here is a moderate 10 seconds, which is not a super long groundswell, so it should work well enough for the beach break peaks.
After that, the surf drops off again into the first few days of August, with smaller, less clean conditions returning. So, your window is really the 30th of July through the 1st of August.
Rusty.
