Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, let’s get stuck into it. Rusty here, taking a look at what the surf’s doing for Rodiles - Main Beach. To be straight with you, this is a tough one. The first ten days or so are looking pretty bleak for any kind of decent session. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 5° above average, so it’s like a warm bath out there.
The overall pattern shows a long stretch of small, weak surf with poor conditions. We’ve got a run from Sunday the 5th right through to the middle of the month where the wave energy is just tiny – you’re looking at readings as low as 16 and 31 (weak energy). There’s a real shortage of swell, and when there is a little bump, the wind is often on it or cross-onshore messing it up. You’ve got sequences of glassy mornings on the 6th and 10th, but the swell heights are only 1ft to 2ft with short periods. Not worth paddling out for.
Things slowly get a bit more interesting around Sunday the 12th of July. We start seeing some energy creep in. The combined energy jumps to 161 (moderate) on the Sunday morning with a 3ft swell from the N, period of 7 seconds. It’s still a bit cross-shore with the wind from the NW, so not clean, but the size is edging up. By Monday the 13th, we’re seeing 174 (moderate) in the morning, but again the conditions are marginal with cross to cross-on winds. Not the sort of thing that’ll have you rushing down.
The highlight, if you can call it that, arrives on Saturday the 18th of July. That morning we get a solid 4ft swell from the NNW with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy hits a strong 365. The direction from the NNW is not quite perfect for Rodiles – it’s cross-on from the E at 9 mph, which will put some chop on it. Still, for this stretch of poor surf, it’s the biggest and most powerful day on the charts. This one is the standout. That longer period will mean better shape and more push, but the onshore wind from the east will make it a bit lumpy.
The following morning, Sunday the 19th of July, looks promising too. We’ve got 3ft from the NNW, energy of 131 (moderate), and glassy conditions with a light W wind. That’s a rare clean window. It’s small, but if you’re keen on a longboard or a funboard, that’s your chance for a clean, uncrowded session.
A bit later, Monday the 20th of July morning also shows some hope: 3ft from the NNW, energy of 197, with a light WNW offshorer. That’s clean, but a bit stronger wind at 9 mph from the WNW.
Overall, it’s a long wait. The gap between Saturday the 11th and Friday the 17th has virtually no surf at all worth mentioning. Then the best bet is that Saturday the 18th morning with the biggest, most powerful swell, even if it’s not perfect. If you’re a beginner, that 4ft swell is fine, but the onshore wind will make it a little messy. For experts, the 4ft is small, but the period is okay. For anyone looking for a clean wave, focus on the glassy Sunday the 19th morning.
That’s the picture from here. Keep an eye on it, things can change.
