The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Rodiles - Main Beach over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you – the first week is a bit of a struggle. The swell is tiny. We’re looking at waves mostly under 3 feet, and the wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, making it messy. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. The combined energy is weak, sitting in the low double digits like 7 or 9. It’s not completely flat, but it’s a real struggle to get a decent ride. The wind is light in the mornings, but the swell just isn’t there.

There’s a real gap of poor surf here. We go from Saturday the 18th right through to the 25th of July with nothing but small, choppy conditions. The waves stay small, and the wind is usually onshore or cross-onshore. It’s frustrating, but it’s what we’ve got.

Now, things start to show a little more life around Sunday the 26th of July. We start seeing a bit more size, with waves around 3 feet to 5 feet out of the NW. The wind turns clean and cross-offshore, which is exactly what we need. The combined energy climbs to 154 on Sunday morning and 220 on Sunday afternoon. That’s still weak to moderate, but after a week of nothing, this is the best of the whole run. The swell is short period though, around 6 to 7 seconds, so it’s not going to have much punch. It’s a beach break, so the short period wind swell won’t be the prettiest, but for a Sunday surf, it’s the only window that looks any good.

Heading into the second week, the 27th of July shows some NW groundswell with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps up to 343 and 453, which is getting into moderate territory. The wind is a bit of a letdown – cross-onshore every morning – so it will be a bit chopped. Still, the energy is there, and it’s a step up from the flat spell. The 29th of July has a promising swell with a longer period of 11 seconds out of the NNW, and moderate energy (684), but the wind is cross-onshore and making it messy. The 31st of July Friday morning looks glassy with a light N wind, but the swell is only 3 feet with a period of 8 seconds. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.

Honestly, the standout here is the 26th of July. The wind is clean, the swell is the biggest we’ve seen all week, and it’s a Sunday. It’s not world-class, but it’s the one to aim for. The following week has some energy, but the wind is always a bit of a problem. The one on the 31st of July morning is glassy but small.

So, if you’re keen, pencil in Sunday the 26th of July. It’s the best of a poor run. The rest of the 16 days is mostly a write-off for decent surf. It’s one of those runs where the forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking lean.

Rusty.
