The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, talking in feet and miles per hour for this stretch. We’re looking at the same 16 days, and it’s a rough one. There’s a big gap of nothing, so let’s get into it.

The first surf pops up on Sunday, July 19th, but it’s tiny – 1ft of weak, short-period NW windswell with a cross-on breeze. The combined energy is only 18 (weak). Not worth paddling out for. That kicks off a long run of poor conditions. From Sunday the 19th through Thursday the 24th, we get small, choppy, cross-on junk. Swell heights bounce from 2ft to 6ft, but the wind is always from the ENE, NNE, or NNW, all cross-on or onshore. The period is short, under 8 seconds, so the waves are weak and messy. The energy readings are mostly low to moderate (39 to 410), but the ratings are all zero – just poor surf. When the swell goes over 5ft on Monday afternoon and Tuesday, it’s expert-only chop.

By Friday the 24th, it drops to 3ft and then 2ft, with a light cross-shore breeze. Still no good. The whole weekend of the 25th and 26th is flat – just 1ft to 2ft. There’s a glassy moment on Sunday morning the 26th with a long-period (13 seconds) groundswell from the NNW, but the height is only 0.7ft – just a ripple. Combined energy is 24 (weak). Same story on Monday the 27th: glassy, but 2ft and no power. So that’s a blank run from the 19th through the 28th – a solid 9 days of nothing.

Things start to build on Tuesday, July 28th. The swell hits 3ft to 4ft from the NNW and NW, with a 7-8 second period. The wind is still cross-on from the ENE, so it’s bumpy, but the combined energy jumps to 199-214 (moderate). Still rated poor, but you can see it trying. By Wednesday the 29th, the swell holds at 4ft from the NNW, period stretching to 10 seconds, and energy up around 290 (moderate). The wind is still cross-on from the east, so it’s fairly choppy.

Then Thursday, July 30th – the best shot we’ve got. The morning shows 4ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and energy hits 310 (moderate). The wind is onshore from the NE, but the wave comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” and it gets a score of 1 out of 10. That’s the only rideable hint in the whole forecast. This is for experts only – the swell is under 5ft, the period is decent, and it’s a river break, so it can handle the longer period. The wind is a letdown, but it’s the closest we get to a clean session.

After that, Friday the 31st drops back to 3ft, and the weekend of August 1st and 2nd sees a bump – 5ft to 5ft from the NNW, with a 10-second period and energy up to 517 (strong) on Saturday morning. That’s the biggest energy of the whole window. But the wind is still cross-on from the east at 12-15 mph, making it choppy. The rating is still zero. That’s a lot of power but no quality. The swell is too big for beginners, and the wind ruins it for everyone. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing setup.

Water temp? No specifics, but it’s mid-summer, so it’s fine.

So, bottom line: Thursday, July 30th morning is your only real chance – marginal, but the only window with a pulse. Everything else is a write-off. The gap from the 19th to the 28th is a full 9 days of nothing. It happens. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, this is a waiting game.

Rusty.
