The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next stretch at Rodiles. It’s a bit of a slow burn to start, so don’t rush out there just yet. The early part of the window is pretty ordinary, with small, weak surf and a lot of lumpy, cross-shore conditions. You’re looking at a few days of ankle-biters with very little energy in the water. It’s not going to be worth a paddle until we get some proper life into the ocean.
Looking at the first real chance for a wave, that comes up on Friday the 21st. We’ve got a bit more size, around 5ft, from the NNW, and with a clean cross-offshore breeze, it should scrub up alright. The swell energy is moderate (485), so there’s a bit of push behind it. Still, it’s not huge, and it's a river break, so it needs a bit of love. It’s a decent start, but not the main event.
The following morning, Saturday the 22nd, looks like a write-off. The wind swings onshore and it gets choppy and messy. Not your friend. The swell is all over the place, and the period drops, making it pretty junky. That’s a good time to stay on the beach.
After a couple of flat, weak days, things properly wake up. The standout of the whole period has to be Thursday the 27th of August. The morning starts with a clean offshore wind and a solid 6ft of WNW swell, but it’s the afternoon that’s the real gem. We’re looking at 8ft of NW swell and the energy jumps to 813 – that’s strong, meaty stuff. The wind is cross-offshore and clean, so the waves should be holding their shape. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s expert territory for sure at that size, but for those who know how to handle a river mouth, this could be firing. It’s not one for the beginners, that’s for sure.
The run-up to that is a few small, glassy days, which are nice to look at but pretty gutless. Water temp is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, heading into that Thursday, about 72°, which is a nice bonus.
After the 27th, things stay solid but get a bit more complicated. Friday the 28th has some size, around 6ft, but the wind picks up and makes it a bit harder work. Saturday the 29th morning looks magic – glassy conditions with a solid 7ft of NW swell (583 energy) – that’s another good window, and the crowd will be out for that one. Sunday the 30th has similar size, with the morning also glassy, so that’s a solid option too, even if the period isn’t super long.
Early the next week, Monday the 31st, the morning looks clean and glassy with 5ft of NNW swell. It’s a bit less powerful and more of a beach break type of wave, so it might be a bit more closed out, but it’s still a good option to get wet.
The beginning of September is more of a mixed bag, with smaller surf and more wind issues. There’s a bit of a downswing after that weekend, but the energy levels are still respectable. The second week looks less consistent, with a few mornings of good, clean 3ft to 5ft surf, but nothing with that same punch as that Thursday the 27th. There’s another pulse of 7ft on Friday the 4th of September, but it’s coming with onshore wind, which will chop it up. That one looks more interesting for the kite crew than the paddle surfers, to be honest.
So, if you want the best of it, aim for that Thursday afternoon the 27th, and make sure you’ve got your big-wave head on. The Saturday and Sunday mornings after that are also worthwhile, just with a bit less size and power.
This is Rusty, signing off. Be safe out there.
