G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the local intel on the waves around here for the next couple of weeks. Strap in, because it's a bit of a mixed bag.
First up, let's talk about the swell. There's a consistent, small, long-period NW groundswell (periods of 11 to 12 seconds) pushing in, but it's got a bit of a tricky angle. The real issue is the wind. For the first week and a half, it's mostly cross-onshore from the east or northeast, which is just trashing the surface. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We start off with a few days of nothing really worth paddling out for. The vibe is flat and choppy. Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th are write-offs, with onshore winds and messy, small waves around 2ft to 3ft. The combined energy is weak, sitting at 205 and 150, so just a lot of noise. Sunday the 5th morning is a dead loss, and the afternoon pumps up a bit of a messy, short-period 5ft NE swell, but the period is a paltry 6 seconds and the wind is still cross-onshore – a total washout. Monday the 6th morning looks glassy but with only 2ft of swell, it's just a flat lake. That pattern continues right through until the middle of the week with tiny, weak swell and poor conditions.
Now, things get a little more interesting on Sunday the 12th. The morning brings a clean, cross-offshore wind from the WNW and a bit of a bump from the NNW. The swell is only 2ft with a 7-second period, but the combined energy is still modest (84). The conditions are clean, but the waves are ordinary. It's surfable, but you won't be bragging about it.
The best bet on offer is likely to be the morning of Friday the 17th. There's a tiny 3ft swell from the NNW, but the wind is dead calm, completely glassy. The combined energy is low at 87, but for a bit of a cruise on a longboard, the glassy conditions will make it look a million times better than it actually is. If you're an expert, the river mouth at Rodiles can be a bit of a challenge, and with the NW swell window, it's fairly exposed. The crowds are often there, but on a Friday morning with such a small forecast, you might find a few less people out.
The rest of the run into the second week offers nothing. The swell drops off again to tiny, weak, and mostly blown out by the wind. Saturday the 18th morning is glassy again but with a pathetic 2ft of swell, so it's a flat session.
Honestly, we're in a pretty dry spell. If you're desperate, the glassy windows on the 6th, 17th, or 18th are your only chance, but don't expect any power. The long period swell is there, but it's just too small and the wind is against us for most of the run. Hold tight, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
