The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at the forecast for Rodiles. It’s a river mouth setup, so it can be a bit of a tricky beast, but when it comes together, it’s a proper wave. The water is sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a thinner wettie.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start on the cards. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny and the winds are messy. You’ll be staring at flat, lumpy water. It’s not worth getting wet.
Things start to nudge into life on Friday morning, the 21st. We’ve got a 4ft NW swell, with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW. That’ll clean the place up and the energy is moderate (579). It’s not going to be pumping, but it’s a glimmer of hope after a dead few days. The afternoon gets a bit cross-shore, so the morning is the window.
The weekend goes a bit pear-shaped again. Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd are a no-go. Onshore winds and weak, short-period windswell will make for a choppy mess. You’re better off doing something else.
Monday and Tuesday the 24th and 25th are still weak. The swell is under 3ft and the energy is low. There’s a moment on Tuesday afternoon with a glassy 3ft wave, but it’s tiny. Ordinary.
Now, Wednesday the 26th morning is where we start to get a bit more interested. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the NW (339), with a clean cross-offshore wind. That’s a solid, surfable wave. The afternoon drops off a cliff again, so don’t sleep in.
Thursday the 27th is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell is a proper 6ft from the NW, but it’s a shorter period (8 seconds) and the wind is cross-offshore. The energy is moderate (483-531). It’s surfable, but the tide or conditions might make it a bit ordinary. It’ll be a bit of a handful for beginners.
The standout, and the one to really circle on the calendar, is Monday the 31st of August. The morning session is looking excellent. We’ve got an 8ft NW swell, with a 10-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind from the west. The energy is very strong (1494). This is a serious, powerful groundswell. The river mouth will handle it well, but at that size, it’s strictly for experts. It’s going to be a big, powerful, and clean day. The afternoon sees the wind swing cross-shore, so the morning is the magic window.
The following week has a few more nice-looking mornings. Tuesday the 1st of September has a clean 4ft NW swell, and Wednesday the 2nd of September has a glassy 4ft NW swell. Both are solid options for a good session.
Overall, it’s a slow start, but the last week of the period has some real gems. The 31st of August is the standout, no doubt about it. The river mouth is exposed to the NW, so it’s catching the right direction.
