The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we've got a bit of a flat spell. The first few days are looking pretty grim, with hardly any energy in the water. From Tuesday the 18th through to Wednesday the 19th, the swell is tiny and the conditions are poor. You're looking at waves barely reaching 2 ft, and the combined energy is in the low double digits, around 23 to 11. Just not worth paddling out for.

Things start to get interesting on Thursday the 20th. The morning is still a bit messy with a cross-onshore breeze, but the swell is picking up to 3 ft from the NNW. The real action begins Thursday afternoon. The wind goes glassy, and we get a solid 4 ft groundswell from the NNW with a period of 12 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 405, which is a decent bump. This is the first real window, and it's clean.

Friday the 21st is looking even better. Both morning and afternoon are glassy, with a consistent 4 ft swell from the NW, period at 10 seconds. The energy is sitting around 435, making for some fun, clean waves at Rodiles. This is a river mouth, so that long-period groundswell should wrap in nicely. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.

The weekend gets a bit mixed. Saturday the 22nd has a messy morning, but the afternoon turns glassy again with a smaller 2 ft NW swell. Sunday the 23rd is similar, with glassy conditions but small, weak waves, the energy dropping back below 100. It's surfable, but nothing to get excited about.

The following week is pretty quiet. From Monday the 24th through to Friday the 28th, the swell is small and the energy is low, mostly in the double digits or low triple digits. There is a brief spike on Wednesday the 26th afternoon, where a 7 ft WNW swell rolls in, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the wind is cross-shore, making it a bit of a messy, choppy affair. Not ideal for a paddle.

We then get a bit of a lull again until Saturday the 29th, where the morning shows some promise with a 4 ft NW swell and a clean cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is moderate at 251. The afternoon turns onshore again.

Now, for the real standout. You have to hold out for the first couple of days of September. Monday the 31st of August is still marginal, but Tuesday the 1st of September is where it's at. The morning brings a glassy 4 ft NNW groundswell, with a period of 11 seconds and combined energy of 443. That's good. But the afternoon... that's a cracker. Flat calm, glassy conditions, a 6 ft NNW groundswell with a 12-second period, and the energy jumps to 856. This is the best of the entire forecast.

And then Wednesday the 2nd of September is the absolute peak. A glassy morning, a 7 ft NNW groundswell with a very long 13-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1387. That's serious, powerful swell. This is for experienced surfers only, as it's over 8 ft. The long period will make it line up beautifully at this river mouth, but the sets will be fat and powerful. Don't miss it.

Signing off,
Rusty.
