The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet along this stretch of coast. There’s a real gap in quality surf coming up, and it’s going to feel like a bit of a drought before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and often messy conditions from Thursday the 16th of July all the way through most of the month. The wind is a constant problem – blowing onshore or cross-onshore nearly every day, and the swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, with short, weak periods. The combined wave energy is in the double digits or low three digits, which is just weak sauce. There’s a bit of a bump around Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, with swell touching 7ft, but the wind is straight onshore or cross-onshore and the period is a short 7 seconds. That’s a choppy, blown-out mess, not a surfer’s friend. Honestly, with that much wind and that kind of swell, it’s looking more like a kite session than a paddle session.
The first real glimmer of hope comes in the last few days of the month. Things start to look a little more interesting around Wednesday the 30th of July. The morning of the 30th sees a jump in quality: a clean, cross-offshore wind from the WNW at 6 mph, with a swell building to 3ft from the NNW. That’s a long-period groundswell of 14 seconds, packing a punch with 483 units of energy. That’s a good sign for a spot like Rodiles – a river mouth that can handle that long-period, directional swell. The water is running at 70°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
Then the afternoon of the 30th of July and into the 31st shows a bigger pulse. The swell jumps to 6ft from the NNW, with a 13-second period, and the energy goes through the roof to 1083. That’s serious power. But the wind switches to a light cross-onshore, which will put a bit of texture on the face. The morning of the 31st still has 5ft of swell from the same direction, but the wind is onshore from the ENE. This is a window for the experts. Rodiles is a river mouth, and with a long-period NNW groundswell, it should set up with some proper lines. The crowds are often there, so expect company. The water is still much warmer than normal, so it’s a tropical feeling session.
That’s your best bet. A couple of days right at the end of the month that could dish up some proper, powerful waves. The rest of the 16 days is a write-off for quality surf. Hold tight, and keep an eye on the forecasts.
