The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. We’ve got a long gap of nothing but small, messy conditions before anything even starts to look half-interesting. The first real whisper of surfable waves doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 28th of July, and even then it’s only just scraping a “maybe”.
The water temp at Rodiles is reading 71°, which is a good 5° warmer than what’s normal for this time of year – that’s notably warm, so you can leave the thick suit at home.
The first half of the period is a write-off. From Sunday the 19th right through to Monday the 27th, it’s all poor surf – tiny swell, mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds, and the combined energy is weak, never breaking past 100. There’s a glassy moment on Thursday the 23rd morning and again on Saturday the 25th morning, but with swell only 2ft to 3ft and a short period of 6 seconds, there’s just no push.
We do get a bit of a lift on the 26th and 27th July with some clean, cross-off winds from the west, but the swell is still tiny – 1ft to 3ft – and the energy is still low (mixed energy in the 64 to 254 range). You might get a knee-high runner if you’re desperate, but it’s not worth a trip.
The only real standout in the whole forecast comes on Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning sees a NNW swell at 4ft, a period of 10 seconds, and an energy reading of 349 – that’s moderate energy, finally. The wind is light from the NNW, which is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. This is a river break, so that longer period swell (10 seconds) has a chance to line up a bit better than at a beach. Still, it’s only a marginal call, and the crowds are listed as “often”, so expect company.
The morning of Wednesday the 29th July also has some potential with a 3ft NNW swell and a very long period of 12 seconds, with energy at 350. That long period means cleaner, more powerful lines, but again, the wind is a light cross-onshore from the ENE. For a river mouth, that long-period groundswell can be a real treat, but it’s a gamble.
If you’re an expert, the 28th morning is your best bet. The swell at 4ft is manageable, but it’s not a day for beginners. After that, things fade back into small, average conditions through the end of the first week of August.
It’s a tough forecast, amigos. Not much to get excited about. Keep an eye on the sky, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
