The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Rodiles.
Honestly, mate, the next two and a half weeks are a write-off. I’m looking down the barrel of a long, flat spell. The first real chance of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 22nd of July, and even then it’s barely a pulse. The combined swell energy there is only 223, so it’s light and weak. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, coming in at 70°, which is nice if you’re just sitting on your board waiting for nothing.
We’ve got a long stretch from now until then with nothing but tiny, messy junk. Most mornings are glassy, but the swell is just too small – we’re talking 1 ft to 2 ft – nothing to write home about. The wind does turn offshore on the morning of the 17th, but again, the swell is only 1 ft. There’s simply no energy to ride.
Then around Monday the 20th, the swell tries to show up. By the afternoon, it’s 6 ft from the NE with a period of 6 seconds. That’s windswell, and with a moderate onshore breeze at 16 mph, it’ll be choppy and messy. The energy climbs to 274, which is moderate, but the conditions will be poor. For a river mouth setup, this is more of a kitesurfing kind of day than a paddle surfer’s dream.
The pick of a very bad bunch comes on Wednesday the 22nd of July. The morning shows 4 ft from the NE at 7 seconds, with glassy conditions. The energy sits at 223. It’s the only window all forecast where the conditions line up as “glassy” with a bit of size. Will it be world-class? No. But if you’re desperate, that’s your moment. The water temp anomaly data doesn’t cover this date, but given the initial reading, expect it to still be a touch warm.
After that, it fades back to nothing. The end of the month sees tiny 1 ft to 2 ft swells, mostly from the N or NW, with clean glassy mornings but zero power. The 28th and 29th have clean, offshore winds but with combined energy as low as 7 to 40 – that’s lean.
So, bottom line: don’t bother until the 22nd of July morning. The rest is a long, flat, frustrating stretch. Rodiles is a river break that needs a proper push, and it’s not getting one for a while.
Rusty.
