The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’re getting a constant trickle of small, weak swell from the north and northwest, with periods barely scratching 3 or 4 seconds. The combined energy is just a whisper – mostly between 16 and 37 (weak energy) – and the wave comment is a flat-out "poor surf conditions" every day. There’s a stretch from Tuesday the 14th all the way through to Thursday the 23rd of July where there's just nothing worth paddling out for. The only glimmer in that whole stretch is a morning or two of glassy conditions, but without any real swell behind it, it’s just a flat, pretty lake.
Now, let’s talk about the one real standout, and it’s a long way off. On Friday the 24th of July, we finally see a pulse. The swell picks up to 3ft, coming from the northwest with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 103 (moderate wave energy), and for the first time in the whole forecast, we get a "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" tag. The morning is glassy – dead calm, offshore wind from the north-northeast at just 3 mph. That’s your window at Rodiles (river mouth). The swell direction at 284° from the northwest is a perfect match for the optimum swell direction of 315° (NW), so it’s lining up right. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there.
Because this is a river mouth break, and it’s rated as expert level, you need to know what you’re doing. The crowds are listed as "often", so don’t expect a solo session. The swell is only 3ft, so it’s manageable for most, but the consistency is only "fairly consistent", so you’ll be sitting and waiting for the sets. That glassy morning is the key – that’s the cleanest, most promising window in the whole 16 days.
After that, the 25th and 26th slip back into small, weak conditions with poor surf, though we do get another glassy morning on the 26th with 2ft. Then on Monday the 27th, we get another "surfable but ordinary" tag with a 2ft north-west swell and a period of 8 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore wind. Weak energy (83), but a step up from the flatness. Then on Wednesday the 29th, the last day in the forecast, we get a 3ft groundswell from the northwest with a period of 9 seconds and glassy conditions again. The energy is 106 (moderate wave energy). It’s a tease, but it’s there.
So, what’s the call? The best surf on offer is Friday the 24th of July, early morning at Rodiles. 3ft of clean, north-west swell with glassy conditions. It’s not a world beater, but in a forecast that’s mostly flat and choppy, it’s the only real chance to get a few lined-up ones. Later in the week, the 27th and 29th offer a bit of hope, but that 24th is the highlight. Don't hold your breath for the rest.
Rusty.
