The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Rodiles. The long-range picture is a bit of a slow burn. It’s not looking epic for the next week or so, but there are some glimmers and one proper window of opportunity way out there that has my attention. We'll have to be patient, though.
The next week or so is looking pretty average. We've got a fair bit of small, weak swell with the energy levels often staying under 100 (like 23, 38, 9). The wind is often onshore or cross-shore, which is going to make things messy. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 72°F, which is nice for the first session we might get, but you won't be needing a thick suit.
Starting off, Tuesday the 18th is a no-go. It's tiny with a light cross-onshore breeze. Nothing doing. The next few days are similar – small and junky. There is a slight bump in size for Thursday the 20th, with around 3ft of swell from the NW, but the onshore wind will ruin it. Not worth the paddle out.
We finally start to see something a little more promising on Friday the 21st, when the swell picks up to about 4ft from the NW. The morning has a light cross-offshore wind, which will clean it up a bit, and the energy jumps up to a moderate 420. It's the first sort of semi-decent window, but it’s still not amazing. The afternoon deteriorates with a cross-shore wind.
The weekend and the start of the following week are more of the same – small, weak, and inconsistent. The swell drops back down to around 3ft and the energy is weak. There's a glassy morning on Monday the 24th, but the swell is short-period and weak, so it’ll be pretty gutless. We’re just biding our time. From the 25th to the 28th, it's pretty poor, with small, weak swell and not much hope. The onshore winds keep mushing it up.
But then we get to the real bright spot. Sunday the 30th of August is looking like a proper standout. We’ve got a clean 4ft of NW swell with a 8-second period, and the energy jumps up to a solid 293. It’s glassy in the morning. That’s the call for a proper surf. Rodiles (Asturias) is fairly consistent, but on a day like this with a clean pulse and a light offshore, it should be firing. The swell is NW, which is just about perfect for this spot. Just watch out for the crowds, as they're often there.
And then, hold onto your boards, because that pulse is just a sign of things to come. The standout of the whole forecast is the 1st and 2nd of September. We're looking at a proper swell event. Tuesday the 1st sees the swell build to 5ft and then 6ft from the NNW, with a longer 11-second period. The energy is strong at 637. The morning looks clean with a light cross-offshore wind. This is significant swell, so it's expert territory – not for the faint of heart.
Wednesday the 2nd is the absolute best on offer, though. The swell holds at 6ft from the NNW, but the period stretches out to 12 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 782. The wind is light and offshore in the morning, which should make for some incredible, clean conditions at this river mouth. This is a long-period groundswell, which is best at a river break like Rodiles, so the setup is ideal. This looks like the day to make the most of it. It’s far out, so treat it as promising but not locked in, but man, it has all the ingredients.
So there you have it. The next week is mostly a write-off, but that final few days has some serious potential, with the 30th being the first sign and the 2nd of September being the one to circle on the calendar. Just remember, that big swell is only for experts. Stay safe out there.
