The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat. This is a tough one to call for Rodiles.
The next couple of weeks look pretty grim for a proper paddle session. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead. The first real chance of anything surfable doesn't show up until Wednesday morning, 22nd July. Before that, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves with poor onshore wind. It’s a real bummer.
Wednesday, 22nd July gives us a brief glimmer. The morning is glassy and the swell is a small 5ft from the NNE, but the period is short, at 7 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 184. It’s surfable, but it’s pretty ordinary. The glassy conditions are a major plus, but don’t expect much push.
Then the wind swings onshore again, and we’re back to poor conditions through the rest of the week. There’s a small window of glassy mornings on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th July, but the swell is tiny – 3ft and 2ft respectively – with weak energy (58 and 28). It’s really just a chill-out-and-sit-on-your-board kind of day.
The only real standout is a distant promise. Look at Tuesday, 28th July. We’ve got a solid 7ft swell from the NW, with a long period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 1333, which is a strong pulse. But the wind is a cross-onshore from the E, which isn't ideal. The raw power is there for an expert session, but it’s not going to be pristine. The long period could mean some nice lines down the river mouth, but that cross-onshore wind will chop it up.
The water temp is a notable 71°F, which is 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. Feels like a warm bath for July.
After that, the swell backs off again. The first week of August looks like more small, weak swell with a mix of cross-off and cross winds. It’s a waiting game, mate. The first week is a write-off, the second week has that one strong pulse on the 28th, but it’s a gamble. The forecast is shaky that far out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
