Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the next couple of weeks at Rodiles. Let's be straight with you: it's a tough stretch. For a spot that’s usually a pretty consistent river-mouth setup, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing for a long time.
The pattern is pretty grim to start. We kick off with the first recommendation on Sunday the 5th of July, and right away it’s a miss. We’ve got a weak 4ft swell from the ENE, but it’s a short-period windswell of only 5 seconds. The wind is a cross-on at 12 mph, making it choppy and messy. The water is much warmer than normal at 69°, but that’s small comfort when you’re looking at poor surf.
Then comes the real killer: from Monday the 6th of July right through to Saturday the 12th of July, there’s basically nothing ridable. A whole week of tiny, gutless waves under 2ft. It’s a brutal gap where the best you can hope for is a glassy morning with nothing to surf. That’s the reality here.
We finally get a little pulse of energy on Sunday the 12th of July. A N’ly swell pushes in at 3ft to 4ft with a combined energy of 161 to 188 (moderate). The period is short though, only 7-8 seconds. The wind is light cross-shore, but the overall quality is still rated as poor.
The first hint of a decent session comes on Monday the 13th of July in the morning. The swell hangs in at 3ft from the N, with a light cross-offshore wind from the NW at 6 mph. That offshore flow should clean things up a bit, and the energy is moderate (174). It’s still only a 1/10 in the ratings, but it's the cleanest we’ve seen. Tuesday the 14th of July morning looks similar with a bit more size at 4ft from the N (energy of 197), but the wind is cross-on, which hurts it.
We get another moment on Wednesday the 15th of July morning. Another N’ly groundswell at 4ft. The wind goes light cross-off from the WNW at 3 mph, keeping the surface clean. Energy is moderate (121). It’s still just a very ordinary wave, but it’s surfable.
Later in the week, on Saturday the 18th of July, the swell jumps up. A NNW groundswell comes in at 4ft with a much longer period of 11 seconds. The combined energy hits 365 (moderate to strong). But the wind is a cross-on from the E at 9 mph, making it choppy and poor quality again. The waves will have some push, but the surface will be messy.
The last little bit of hope is Sunday the 19th of July morning. A NNW swell at 3ft with clean, glassy conditions (W wind at 3 mph). Combined energy is moderate (131). It’s a small window.
The standout? Honestly, there isn’t a true standout. The best of a bad bunch is probably Monday the 13th of July morning or Wednesday the 15th of July morning, where you get that 3ft to 4ft of N swell with a light cross-offshore wind. It’s the cleanest surf in the whole stretch. The longer period pulse on Saturday the 18th of July has the most energy, but the wind kills it. For the river mouth, a longer period N’ly swell like that (11 secs) usually means better shape, but not when it’s blown out.
Hang in there. The forecasts can change, and this area doesn't usually stay this flat for long. But for now, it’s mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
