Alright, let me tell you about the next few weeks at Rodiles. It’s a tricky one, I gotta be honest. For a spot that can handle a good NW groundswell, we’re looking at a long, tough stretch of small, choppy, or just plain weak surf. The first real flicker of hope doesn't show up for a solid two weeks, so don’t get your hopes up for the near future.
The first half of July is a write-off. We’re talking days of tiny swell – mostly below 3 ft – with a persistent onshore or cross-onshore flow from the east and northeast that’s just going to chop it up. The water’s a weird story though; on the 3rd, it’s reading 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year (5° anomaly), but that’s small consolation when the surf is poor.
Things don’t really change. By the 6th and 7th, combined wave energy is stuck in the 20s and 50s – that’s weak. The swell that does show is short-period, 5 to 8 seconds, which is just not gonna have any punch. The wind stays messy, mostly cross or cross-on. It’s flat, it’s choppy, and it’s frustrating for anyone keen for a paddle.
Even into the second week, from the 8th to the 16th of July, it’s a similar story. The swell height barely crawls above 2 ft, and the energy is still low. On the 10th and 11th we finally see a brief shift to a cross-offshore wind from the WNW, but with swell only 1 ft to 2 ft, it’s not worth the drive. The wind might be clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The 15th shows a small pulse with 3 ft swell from the north and moderate energy (112-121), but it’s straight onshore wind, so you’d be battling.
Now, the only time the light goes green is right at the end. On the 17th of July, we get a window. Friday morning brings glassy conditions, with a NW wind dropping to almost nothing. It’s small – only 1 ft – but the period jumps to 12 seconds from the NNW, with moderate energy (104). That’s a proper groundswell pulse, and glassy conditions at a river mouth like Rodiles? That’s your standout. It’ll be clean, the sets will have shape, but at that size, it’s tiny. The 18th of July morning is similar: glassy again, 3 ft from the NW at 9 seconds, and better energy (178). That’s the best on offer, but still very small and very clean.
So, for the next 16 days, if you’ve got a longboard and patience, the mornings of the 17th and 18th of July are your only real bet. Everything else is a no-go. The waiting game is real.
Rusty.
