The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the swell window for Rodiles over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water’s sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a little bonus.
The forecast is a bit of a slow burn. Don’t get too excited about this weekend, because it’s pretty flat and messy. Saturday the 22nd has a small 3ft to 3ft NNW swell, but the wind is cross-on and choppy, so it’s not worth paddling out for. Sunday the 23rd morning sees a glassy 3ft N swell, but the period is short at 6 seconds and the energy is weak (90), so it’s surfable but very ordinary. Monday through Wednesday next week is pretty poor, with tiny swell and not much happening.
Now, the first real standout comes on Thursday the 27th morning. Rodiles will see a clean 7ft NW swell with a 9-second period, cross-off wind, and moderate energy (626). This is sizeable and the wind is right, but that’s a fair bit of power for a river mouth. It’s more for experienced surfers.
The proper gem of the whole run looks to be Friday the 28th morning. We’ve got a clean 8ft NW swell with a 10-second period, light cross-off wind, and strong energy (1539). Excellent conditions for the crew that can handle it. The size means beginners should stay on the beach. That afternoon the swell pushes 10ft and the wind turns cross-on, so it’ll get a bit lumpy and gnarly.
Saturday the 29th morning is still solid with a glassy 5ft NW swell, good energy (794), and clean conditions – a very good session for those who missed Friday.
After that, the surf backs off into the first week of September, with smaller 3ft to 5ft NW swells, glassy mornings, but nothing to write home about until Thursday the 3rd of September. That morning looks like another big one: a 7ft NW groundswell with a very long 12-second period, glassy conditions, and extreme energy (1439). This is a standout for experts only – the period is long so it might be a bit straight at the river mouth, but with no wind, it could be clean and powerful. Friday the 4th morning stays in the 7ft range with a 12-second period, cross-off wind, and strong energy (1346), so another excellent window for the experienced crew.
The second week also has some promise Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th, but with rain showers and moderate winds, it’s more marginal.
Bottom line: don’t bother with the first few days. The real action is from the 27th of August through the 3rd of September, especially the 28th morning and the 3rd morning. Those are the top calls.
Rusty.
