The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The big picture is a bit of a slow start, but there’s some serious promise building towards the end of the month and into early September. We’ve got a solid window of clean, punchy swell coming through, just need to pick the right moment.
The first real standout is Friday the 28th of August at Rodiles. This is the one to circle. We’re looking at a clean 7ft swell from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds, giving it some proper grunt. The combined energy is pumping at 960 (moderate to strong), and with a light offshore wind from the WSW, it’s going to be clean. The water temperature is sitting at 72°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable out there. Now, Rodiles is a river mouth, so it’s best suited for the more experienced crew – this is expert territory, and it’s fairly consistent. Expect crowds as it’s often busy, but for waves this good, it’s worth it.
Before that, Thursday the 27th of August sees a spike in size, but it’s a bit messy. The morning session brings a 6ft cross-off swell from the WNW, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. The afternoon gets bigger at 8ft, but the wind swings to a fresh 19 mph cross-off, making it a bit of a handful. Combined energy hits 626 (moderate), but it’s not the cleanest.
The real gold is on Friday the 28th of August morning. As I said, that’s the pick of the first week. The swell is 7ft, NW, with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light offshore. The energy is 960 (moderate to strong). It’s clean, it’s got power, and it’s a proper go. The afternoon drops back to 6ft with a cross-shore, so still surfable but less perfect.
Saturday the 29th of August morning is a bit of a sleeper. Glassy conditions, with a 5ft NW swell and a 10-second period. The energy is 525 (moderate), and with no wind, it’ll be smooth. Not as big as Friday, but a nice, clean option.
Sunday the 30th of August morning is a bit smaller again, 4ft from the NW, glassy, but the energy is low at 188 (weak). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Now, there’s a big gap of nothing worthwhile from the 31st of August through to the 2nd of September. The 31st of August morning actually has a massive 12ft swell from the WNW, but the report says it’s too big for this break – that’s just for experts, and even then, it’s going to be a washing machine. Avoid.
The next window opens up again on Wednesday the 2nd of September morning. It’s a small one, 4ft NW swell, glassy, but the energy is only 215 (weak). It’s a slow, ordinary day.
The next real standout is a week away, on Thursday the 3rd of September morning. This is a long-range call, so it’s promising but less certain. We’re looking at a 6ft swell from the NNW, with a long 12-second period. The combined energy is 996 (moderate to strong), and the wind is a clean 12 mph cross-off from the W. This is a groundswell, so it’ll have long, clean lines. Perfect for a river mouth like Rodiles. The afternoon is a bit smaller, 5ft, still clean.
Friday the 4th of September morning is a solid option too. 5ft from the NW, 10-second period, light offshore wind, and energy at 488 (moderate). Clean and fun.
Saturday the 5th of September morning is the last real standout. It’s a long way out, but the forecast shows a 6ft NW swell, 10-second period, with glassy conditions. The energy is 749 (moderate). That’s a very clean, solid wave on the cards. If it holds, it’ll be a great session.
In summary, the first week is a bit of a slow burner, but Friday the 28th of August is the absolute best offer. Then there’s a lull, and the second week looks promising again, especially Thursday the 3rd of September and Saturday the 5th of September. Keep an eye on those long-range ones.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
