The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming our way for this stretch of the Asturias coast. We’re focusing on Rodiles for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, the first part of the forecast is pretty flat and frustrating. There’s a long gap of weak, poor quality surf right through until Thursday the 27th, so don't bother paddling out just yet.

From Monday the 24th right through Wednesday the 26th, the swell is tiny – nothing over 3ft – with periods under 8 seconds and combined energy barely breaking 50 (37). It's all messy and weak. There's a couple of glassy windows on Tuesday morning and Wednesday, but the swell is so small it’s just not worth a paddle.

The first real glimmer of hope arrives on Thursday, August 27th. The swell lifts slightly to 4ft from the NW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 205. Winds are light and cross-off in the morning, glassy in the afternoon. The conditions are surfable, but still very ordinary. Friday the 28th brings a bigger pulse – 4ft in the morning with energy up to 442 – but the wind is blowing 12 mph from the W, making it choppy. By Friday afternoon, it jumps to 8ft but with a short 7-second period and wind screaming 19 mph. That’s raw and bumpy, not for the faint-hearted.

Now, the standout in this first week is Saturday morning, August 29th. This is where it comes together. Clean 4ft NW groundswell, a period of 9 seconds, and solid energy (336). The wind is glassy – 3 mph from the NNE – so expect clean, peaky waves at the river mouth. This is the pick of the first week, no question.

We then hit another quiet patch from Sunday the 30th through Wednesday, September 3rd. Swells drop back below 3ft, energy drops into the low hundreds, and the wind isn’t doing us many favours. It’s a flat spell.

But hold onto your leash, because Sunday, September 6th, and Monday, September 7th look promising. Sunday morning brings 4ft from the NNW with an 11-second period and energy at 320. Winds are glassy from the N. That’s clean, shoulder-to-head-high lines. Monday the 7th morning is also a beauty: 3ft NW swell, long period (9 seconds), strong energy (412), and glassy ESE winds. Quality surf.

The absolute headline act, though, is Tuesday, September 8th. This is one for the true experts only. A massive 10ft NW groundswell with a very long 16-second period rolls in. The combined energy is enormous – 5160. Winds are dead calm, glassy. This is an exceptional, powerful groundswell. At a river break like Rodiles, that long period will likely set up some terrific, lined-up walls, but it’s going to be big, fast, and heavy. This is not a day for learning – this is for the crew who know what they’re doing.

Rodiles is a river-mouth setup, fairly exposed to the NW swell, and the optimum direction is NW, which is exactly what we’re getting. It’s a fairly consistent break, but note the crowds can be around often, so expect some company on those good days. Water temperature feels about average for this time of year.

So, to wrap it up: forget the first five days. Get excited for Saturday morning the 29th, and then circle Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th for clean, good waves. And if you’re an expert with your wits about you, September 8th could be a real standout session.

Stay stoked.
Rusty.
