The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with ya – the next week and a half is a real desert for surf at Rodiles. We're looking at nothing but flat, blown-out conditions until the third week of July. There's a solid block from the 14th to the 20th where the combined swell energy barely cracks 80 (weak), and it's all from the north with tiny, weak windswell. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it's a write-off for paddle surfing. If you're into kiting, maybe the setup from the 19th afternoon with that 4ft cross-on and gentle breeze might look interesting, but for a surfboard? Forget it.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope arrives on the 21st of July, Tuesday morning. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the NE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it's gonna be crumbly. The energy is moderate at 369, and the wind is a light cross-shore, so it's a marginal call. It's not the best, but it's the first sign of life.
After that, the outlook gets a bit more interesting. The 24th of July, Friday, sees a new long-period groundswell from the NW with a period of 12-13 seconds. The energy is moderate to strong (311-349), but the swell is only 2ft to 3ft. The wind is light cross-shore, so it might be clean, but the size is small. This is a river break, so a long-period NW swell could line up nicely on the banks, but it's inconsistent.
The standout period, and really the only one worth circling on the calendar, is the 25th of July, Saturday morning. The swell hits 6ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 784 (strong). That's proper groundswell. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it should be clean. At 6ft, this is getting into expert-only territory at Rodiles, but it's the best wave on offer in the whole 16-day window. The 27th of July, Monday morning, is another good look: glassy conditions with a 5ft NW swell and 388 (moderate) energy. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 69°F.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a flat-out no-go. The 25th of July is the one to aim for – a solid NW groundswell with clean conditions. The 27th is a decent backup. The rest is just hoping for a change in the charts. Stay patient, and keep an eye on the long-range.
Rusty.
