The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the surf outlook for Playa de Viso.

We’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch for the next week and a half, but the real story here is a monster pulse of swell that’s aiming for the middle of the second week. The water is sitting at 71°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus.

First up, Tuesday the 4th through Monday the 11th is a real dry spell. We’ve got tiny waves and mostly crummy conditions. Wednesday morning the 5th offers a tiny 1ft NW swell with glassy conditions, but it’s just too small to bother with. The energy readings are in the weak 20-170 range for most of this time, confirming there’s nothing doing. You’ll be waiting a long time for a wave.

Things start to look slightly more promising from Thursday the 14th, with a 2ft NW swell showing up Friday morning the 14th (126 energy), but winds are light cross-onshore, so it’s only marginal. Saturday morning the 15th sees a 4ft NNW swell with glassy conditions and 250 energy – surfable, but still pretty ordinary. That’s the best of the first week, and it’s nothing to get excited about.

Now, the standout. Hold onto your board. Tuesday the 18th starts to show a jump, with a 6ft NW swell by the morning and 636 energy, but it’s still a little choppy. The real magic is Wednesday morning the 19th of August. We’ve got a solid 10ft NW groundswell hitting with an 11-second period and a massive 2161 combined energy reading. That’s strong, powerful stuff. The wind is glassy – absolutely dead calm – which is a massive plus. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers only, as that 10ft is too big for beginners. This is a day for the crew who know what they’re doing. The afternoon drops to a still-chunky 8ft with a cross-on breeze, so the morning window is the one to chase.

For the long-range call, that Wednesday the 19th is a standout. It’s far out, so treat it as a promising but less certain prospect. Everything else in the forecast is a waiting game. Hang tight, and keep an eye on that date.

Rusty.
