The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Cala De Meron.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and bleak. We’re talking about a stretch of days with barely a ripple. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the wind is all over the shop, mostly cross-on or onshore, which is just not doing this spot any favours. It’s a real bummer. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Monday the 20th of July, and even then it’s only a marginal call.
The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 69°, which is a nice little bonus if you’re just getting wet.
So, the standout window? It’s looking like a Monday morning, the 27th of July. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell coming from the NW, with a decent 9-second period. The wind goes glassy, which is a huge plus – it’ll be clean as a whistle. The combined energy is moderate at 388, so there’s some punch there. It’s a beginner-friendly break, and it’s fairly consistent, so you’ll get waves. Keep in mind, with the optimum swell direction being NNW, the NW swell here is a bit off-angle, but the glassy conditions will make it rideable. For a beginner spot, this is about as good as it’s gonna get in this 16-day window.
Before that, on Friday the 24th, there’s a hint of a long-period groundswell (12-13 seconds) coming from the NW, pushing 3ft, but the wind is cross-on, so it’ll be a bit messy. It’s a marginal call, and with that long period, it might be a bit too straight for a beach break like this, so don’t get your hopes up.
The Monday the 20th sees a jump in size to 7ft, but it’s cross-shore wind and the period is a short 7 seconds. That’s a lot of chop and not much shape. Honestly, it looks more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle guys.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got a long, flat drought until the 20th, then a few days of marginal, messy, or big-choppy stuff. The real gem is that glassy Monday morning on the 27th. It’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but it’s the only one that’s got me even a little bit excited.
Rusty.
