The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into what’s on the table for Cala De Meron.
First off, the first few days are a total bust. Tiny, weak surf and messy winds. Don’t even bother. The first real chance doesn’t come until Thursday the 20th.
Thursday morning the 20th is looking sweet. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the NNW, with a long period of 11 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is glassy, dead calm, so it’ll be clean as a whistle. The water is a touch warmer than average at 72°. The combined swell energy is moderate (269), so there’s some good power in the water. That’s the standout session of the first week.
Friday the 21st is almost a carbon copy. A 4ft swell from the North in the morning, glassy, and a 3ft swell from the NNW in the afternoon, also glassy. It’ll be clean and consistent. The energy is moderate to strong (455 and 423), so you’ll be busy.
Now, for the big boys, hold out for the end of the month. The morning of Friday the 28th of August is a monster. An 8ft swell from the NW, with very strong energy (973). The wind is dead calm, glassy. That’s a serious, expert-only swell. The afternoon jumps to 10ft, with a very strong energy (1697). It’s clean, but it’s huge.
Saturday the 29th of August is even bigger. The morning is a 10ft NW swell with a very long period of 13 seconds, and the energy is extreme (4221). That’s one of the biggest groundswells you’ll see. The wind is glassy, but the size is only for the most experienced. The afternoon holds at 10ft, with a 12-second period. It’s a sight to behold.
The 30th and 31st drop to 5ft to 6ft swells, but the winds get a bit messy, making it just marginal. The first day of September still has 5ft to 5ft swell, but the conditions are average.
So, the pick of the litter is Thursday the 20th morning for a clean, fun session, and the Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th for the big-wave crew. The long period swells will work well here, as it’s a point break setup, so they won’t just close out. Crowds are possible on the good days, so get there early.
