The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty.
We’re looking at a pretty lean stretch for the next two weeks at Cala De Meron, a sheltered little spot that needs the right combo. The first few days are a write-off, but there’s a real window of hope from late in the first week into the weekend, and then a long dry spell before a late pulse.
The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year.
For Sunday, the 23rd of August, we get some tiny, weak waves. It’s glassy, so it’s clean, but it's just not enough. You’ll be on a longboard or a foiler if you’re keen. The swell is a weak 3 ft from the north with a short 6-second period, and that combined energy is only 103 – flat and weak. The afternoon is a bit better, pushing 4 ft from the NNE, but still just ordinary.
Monday through Wednesday are a total bust. Poor surf, small and weak. Don't even bother.
Now, Thursday the 27th starts to wake up. The morning is still just ordinary, but the afternoon brings a real change. We’ve got 4 ft of NW groundswell, a solid 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 359 – that’s moderate power. And the wind? Glassy. That’s clean, clean surf. Expect good conditions.
Friday the 28th is the standout. The morning is the best of the entire outlook. A beautiful 7 ft swell from the WNW, clean offshore cross-off wind from the WSW at 15 km/h, and a combined energy of 780 (that’s strong wave energy). The period is a solid 10 seconds. This is real surf. This spot is exposed to the NW, so that WNW swell will wrap in nicely. It’s a fairly consistent break, so you’ll get waves. The main caveat is that at 7 ft, it’s pushing into intermediate territory; beginners might find it a bit challenging. But for everyone else, this is the time to go. The afternoon turns to crap, so surf the morning.
Saturday the 29th morning is still very good, with 5 ft and glassy conditions. Strong energy again at 653. Another solid morning session. The afternoon gets trashed by onshore wind.
Sunday the 30th morning is good, with 4 ft and glassy, but it’s a step down in size. The energy is moderate at 225. After that, it goes quiet again.
From Monday the 31st all the way through to Saturday the 5th of September, it’s a long, flat, and poor stretch. Some small, weak, and choppy waves, but nothing worth paddling out for. This is a real gap in the action.
Then, on Sunday the 6th of September, there’s a tiny whisper of life with 2 ft and a longer 11-second period, but it’s still ordinary.
The real late-bloomer is Monday the 7th of September. Over a week away, so keep an eye on it, but the morning shows 4 ft of NNW swell with a long 12-second period, glassy offshore wind from the south, and a combined energy of 450. That’s moderate to strong energy. This is a promising, clean groundswell window. The long period means it will have nice shape and energy, but at a beach break it might get a bit straight. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and the wind is perfect. This could be a sneaky good session, but it’s a long-range call.
So, to sum it up: Friday the 28th of August morning is your absolute best bet – big, clean, and powerful. Saturday the 29th morning is a very close second. The week after is dead until maybe that Monday the 7th of September morning.
Rusty.
