The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for our stretch of coast at Cala De Meron.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the first week to ten days are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a real flat spell to sit through. From Friday the 17th right through to the 21st of July, the swell is tiny and the wind is a mess. You’re looking at ankle-biters mostly, with a bit of a bump on Monday the 20th when the combined energy hits 197 (moderate), but it’s blown out by a 12 mph onshore breeze that afternoon. Not worth wetting a suit for.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday the 22nd of July. The morning is glassy – absolute silence on the wind front – and we’ve got a clean 4 ft swell from the NNE. The combined energy is still only moderate at 102, but the glassy conditions make it a proper window for a longboard or a funboard. The water is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit. This is the best early call, but don’t expect much push.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th of July mornings are also glassy, with 3 ft and 3 ft respectively. The swell is weak and short-period (6 to 7 seconds), so it’s not going to barrel, but it’s clean enough for a few cruisy waves. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” here, so you might have a few locals out, but nothing crazy.
The standout, and I mean the real standout, is waiting for you on Sunday the 26th of July. The morning brings a clean 4 ft swell from the north with a cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to 232 (moderate-to-strong), and the wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” This is your best bet in the whole forecast. The period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a bit of a windswell, but the offshore flow will tidy it up nicely. If you’ve got a board that paddles easy, be there.
The following Monday morning, the 27th of July, is also glassy with a 4 ft swell from the north and a combined energy of 251. That’s another good session, but the wind holds better on the Sunday.
From the 28th onward, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The wind turns onshore again, but there’s a pulse of energy on the 31st of July with a 3 ft swell from the NNW and a period of 11 seconds. That’s a longer period groundswell, and the combined energy hits 278. The issue is the cross-onshore wind at 9 mph, which will mess up the surface. Still, if you’re desperate, it’s better than the flat days.
On the 1st of August, we get another glassy morning with a 3 ft NNW swell at 10 seconds. That’s a clean, long-period swell, but the size is small. It’ll be a fun morning for a log.
So, the bottom line: the first week is a write-off. The real action is Sunday the 26th of July morning – that’s the highlight. The Monday the 27th is a close second. After that, it’s small and clean or a bit bigger but choppy. Keep an eye on the 1st of August as a potential sleeper.
Rusty.
