The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way for Cala De Meron over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice little bonus.
The first few days are flat and messy. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are pretty much a write-off with tiny, weak swell and poor conditions. The swell energy is weak, barely hitting 11 (11) on Wednesday, climbing to 201 (201) and 261 (261) on Thursday, but still very ordinary. Expect small, ripply waves that aren’t worth the paddle out.
Then Friday the 21st of August morning shows a bit of promise. The swell picks up to 4ft from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds and a clean cross-off wind from the WSW. The combined energy climbs to 579 (579) which is moderate, and the surf condition is looking very good. The wind is light, so it should be clean and fun. The afternoon though, the wind swings cross-on and the quality drops.
Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th August are all poor to very ordinary. Small swells, cross-shore and cross-on winds, and the energy is low. Waves are often around 3ft to 3ft, and the period is short, so it’s not going to be anything special. The best bet in that stretch is Sunday 23rd morning with a 3ft swell from the north and a clean cross-off wind, but it’s still very small and weak.
Tuesday the 25th August afternoon is worth a mention. The wind goes glassy, the swell is 3ft from the north, but the energy is really weak at 88 (88). It’s surfable, but just barely.
The run from Wednesday 26th to Thursday 27th August sees the swell size pick up to 5ft to 6ft, but the wind is all over the place – cross-shore and cross-on, with moderate breezes. The energy is moderate to strong (339 to 531), but the quality is poor to marginal. The period is short, so it’s not going to be clean or well-shaped. The stronger swells are blown out.
Now, the standout of this whole outlook is Friday 28th August morning. The wind goes glassy, the swell is 4ft from the NNW with a 10-second period, and the energy is a solid 347 (347). The conditions are expected to be good, and the glassy wind makes it clean. This is the best session on offer. The wind is offshore from the SE, which is great for this break. The swell direction is NNW, which is close to the optimum NNW direction. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
Saturday 29th August also has glassy conditions both morning and afternoon, but the swell is smaller at 3ft from the NW with a short 8-second period, so the energy is weak (113 and 109). It’s surfable but nothing special.
Sunday 30th August is a write-off again. The wind picks up, the swell is 4ft in the morning and then jumps to 8ft in the afternoon from the NW. That 8ft is too big for beginners, and the wind is onshore, making it a choppy, blown-out mess. The energy is huge at 834 (834), but it’s not worth it for paddle surfing.
Monday 31st August sees a big swell – 8ft from the NW in the morning, period 10 seconds, and the energy is massive at 1494 (1494). That’s a strong, powerful swell, but the wind is cross-shore and the condition is marginal. This is only for experts, and even then the wind isn’t ideal. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s a groundswell but not super long period.
Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September mornings are both good. Tuesday has a 4ft swell from the NW, 9-second period, clean cross-off wind from the WSW, and energy of 373 (373). Wednesday morning is glassy, 4ft from the NW, 8-second period, and energy of 343 (343). Both are good, clean sessions, but the swell is moderate and the period is a bit short.
From Thursday 3rd September, it fades back to poor conditions with small, weak swell and cross-on winds.
The gap between the standout on Friday 28th August and the next good sessions on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September is about 4 days of mostly poor to marginal surf.
So, to wrap it up: the best session is Friday 28th August morning. The glassy wind and 4ft NNW swell with good energy make it the pick. The Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September mornings are also good, clean options. The big swells at the end of August are too big and blown out for most, and the early week is flat and weak.
Rusty.
