The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Well, I've had a look at what's on the cards for Cala De Meron over the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a bit of a slow burn. We're looking at a lot of knee-high, weak stuff for days on end before we finally get a couple of windows where it might actually be worth paddling out.
Let's start with the here and now. This Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, we've got a tiny 3ft wave from the north, but it's got a cross-shore wind on it and the water's a touch warmer than usual at 72°. Honestly, it's messy. The combined energy is only 176, so there's just nothing behind it. Saturday afternoon is more of the same. The whole weekend is pretty bleak, with Sunday the 23rd offering glassy conditions but with a weak 3ft swell and a period of only 6 seconds – that's just wind chop, not real surf.
We then hit a real flat spell from Monday the 24th right through to Wednesday the 26th of August. The swell drops away, and while we get some glassy mornings, the wave heights are barely 2ft to 2ft. The combined energy sinks to between 36 and 53, which is just dead. Don't bother.
The first glimmer of hope arrives on Thursday morning, the 27th of August. The swell picks up to a clean 4ft from the northwest, and the period stretches to 8 seconds. The combined energy is a more respectable 210. The wind is glassy, and the forecast says "expect good surf conditions." This is the first real standout. The water temp is still that touch warmer than normal. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is about as good as it's going to get in this stretch. The afternoon does get ruined by a strong cross-offshore wind, though.
Now, Friday the 28th of August is a big one, but it's not for everyone. The morning swell jumps to a solid 8ft from the northwest with a groundswell period of 11 seconds. The combined energy rockets to 1703 – that's strong energy. This is expert territory. It's too big for beginners and will be a handful for most. The wind is a cross-shore, which makes it a bit bumpy. This spot is exposed, so it'll be handling all that power, but it's not going to be pretty. The afternoon is even worse with a cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions.
The following week is a mixed bag of small, mostly ordinary conditions. Saturday the 29th has a morning 4ft northwest swell (379 energy) but with a cross-shore breeze, which is just okay. Sunday the 30th is back to tiny 2ft.
The real standout, and the one to circle on your calendar, is Saturday morning, September the 5th. We get a really nice 4ft groundswell from the northwest, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 256, and the wind is glassy. That's a "good surf conditions" call. The long period will make for some nice, lined-up waves at this point break, and the glassy conditions will make it as clean as a whistle. This is your best bet. The Sunday morning after that, September 6th, also looks promising with a 3ft northwest swell and a clean cross-offshore wind, but the Saturday morning is the pick of the bunch.
So, over the next 16 days, there's a lot of flat, small, and windy junk to wade through. The Thursday morning of the 27th is a decent little session, and the Saturday morning of September 5th is the one to get excited about. For the rest, you're better off waiting for the next forecast.
Rusty.
