The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Cala De Meron.
First thing you need to know – the water’s sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Nice.
Right now, Thursday the 16th into the weekend, we’ve got tiny waves and rough conditions. The combined energy is barely a whisper (16 to 70), and the swell is under 3ft. Honestly, not worth paddling out for. Expect a few days of flat, poor surf.
The first real glimmer comes on Monday the 20th morning. The swell picks up to 5ft from the north, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 239. But the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a bit messy. It’s marginal, but it’s the first sign of life. The afternoon gets bumpy with 16 mph winds, so the morning is your best bet if you’re desperate.
By Tuesday the 21st, the swell holds around 5ft to 7ft, but again, the wind is cross-shore or cross-onshore, and the energy is moderate (227 to 400). It’s going to be choppy and not pretty. The waves are too small and too short-period for this to be a standout.
The real standout? You’ve got to wait until Thursday the 30th. The swell from the NNW builds to 3ft in the morning, but the period is a very long 14 seconds – that’s groundswell. The combined energy is strong (483). But the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. However, the afternoon of the 30th is where it gets interesting: the swell jumps to 6ft from the NNW, with a period of 13 seconds, and the energy is very strong (1122). The wind is offshore from the north, which is clean. This is the best window. For experienced surfers, this could be a fun session at the point, given the long period.
Friday the 31st morning still has solid 5ft swell from the NNW with a period of 11 seconds and energy of 649. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s okay but not perfect. The afternoon stays similar, but the wind picks up a little.
Overall, it’s a slow start. The first week is pretty much a write-off. The best waves are on the 30th and 31st – that’s your window. For a beginner, the early week swells are too weak and messy, and the end-of-month swell is a bit big and long-period for a beach break. It’s more of a reef or point break kind of wave.
Rusty out.
