The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and come sit down. Let’s talk about what’s on the table for Cala De Meron over the next couple of weeks.

The outlook is a mixed bag. We’ve got a few moments of real potential, but there are long stretches of flat to near-flat conditions with a lot of brown water in between. The good news is that when it does show up, it’s from the right direction for this spot.

The first real chance to get wet is Friday morning, August 21st. We’ll see a 5ft swell from the NNW at 10 seconds, with moderate wave energy (513). The wind is a cross-shore from the W, so it’s not going to be perfect, but it’s surfable. The afternoon turns a bit cloudy with a cross-onshore, which makes it more of a chore.

Saturday and Sunday during the day are a write-off. The swell drops to under 3ft, and the wind is a mess. The energy is weak, and the conditions are poor. Not worth paddling out.

Then we get a nice little surprise on Sunday morning, August 23rd. The swell is still small at 3ft, but the wind goes glassy from the WNW. The energy is tiny (106), but it’s clean. It’s a beginner-friendly wave at this size, and the glassy conditions make it a nice session for a learner.

Monday through Wednesday of the following week are extremely quiet. Swell heights are below 3ft, and the energy is very low. There are a few glassy moments, but the waves are too small and weak to ride. It’s a gap of about three days with very little to offer.

The standout of the whole forecast arrives on Thursday morning, August 27th. We see a 5ft swell from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds and a nice 366 energy reading. The wind is cross-off from the WSW, which will clean things up. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions,” and I agree. This is the best window of the whole period.

But the real punch comes on Friday morning, August 28th. The swell jumps to 8ft from the NW, with a solid 11-second period. The energy is a powerful 1493. This is a big, strong swell. The wind is light and cross-off, so the waves will be clean. This is for experienced surfers only. The power is no joke, and the size will test you. If you’re competent, this is the day to be out.

The weekend after that gives us a few smaller, clean windows, but nothing that compares to Thursday and Friday. The energy drops back to moderate levels. The conditions are mixed.

The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no need to worry about a wetsuit change.

The long-range into the first week of September looks quiet. The last interesting whisper is on Saturday morning, September 5th. There’s a 2ft swell from the NW with a very long period of 14 seconds, which is a nice groundswell. The energy is moderate (335), and the wind is cross-shore from the E. The period is so long that it might be a bit straight for the beach break, but if the tide is right, it could produce a few clean lines. It’s a long way out, so don’t book the day off just yet.

Overall, the best on offer is Thursday the 27th for a solid, clean day of intermediate fun, and Friday the 28th for the big, clean, expert-only swell.

Rusty.
