The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Cala De Meron over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, there’s not much to get excited about. We’ve got a run of small, weak, messy surf that really isn’t worth paddling out for. Saturday the 22nd is a write-off, with some cross-shore wind and poor conditions. Sunday morning the 23rd goes glassy with a tiny 3ft north swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the energy is weak (137), so it’s pretty ordinary. That kind of flat spell hangs around through Monday and Tuesday, with nothing but tiny dribbles and onshore breezes.
Then Thursday the 27th morning brings a jump – 7ft from the northwest with a 9-second period and moderate energy (626). But it’s cross-shore with some chop, and the score’s still low. Not worth getting your hopes up. Friday the 28th morning bumps up to 8ft NW with a 10-second period and strong energy (1539), but it’s still cross-shore and a bit messy. The afternoon gets weird – the swell hits 10ft with the same period and very strong energy (1764), and the wind turns onshore. That size is for experts only, and it’s honestly too big for this break.
The standout of the whole period? Saturday morning the 29th of August. That’s your best bet. We’re looking at 5ft from the northwest, 10-second period, and a very solid 794 energy reading. The wind goes glassy – dead calm – so the surface will be clean as a whistle. That’s the one to pencil in. Glassy conditions at a break that can handle a bit of size? That’s the sweet spot. The water temp is sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s comfortable.
Sunday the 30th morning is also clean with a glassy wind and 3ft NW swell, period 9 seconds, energy 264 – good for a fun, mellow session, but nothing like Saturday’s quality.
After that, we’ve got a quiet run again through early September, with only small, weak swells until Thursday the 3rd of September. That morning brings a 7ft NW groundswell with a very long 12-second period, energy hitting 1439, and glassy conditions. That’s another proper session, but it’s big – really only for experienced surfers. The long period will make it line up well here, and the glassy wind is a huge plus.
The following days into early September stay bumpy with cross-shore winds and choppy conditions, so not much to get excited about. The surf is fairly consistent here overall, so when it goes quiet like this, it usually doesn’t stay flat for long.
If you’re not an expert, Saturday the 29th is your day. If you’ve got the skills, Thursday the 3rd of September is the one to watch.
Rusty.
