The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a decent pulse of swell rolling in, but the wind is going to be the main character here. The water is sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
The first real chance to get wet is Friday morning, August 21st. Cala De Meron has a 5ft swell from the NNW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is moderate at 499. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the W, which will keep it from being a total mess, but it’s going to be a little lumpy. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The afternoon sees the swell drop to 5ft and the wind goes cross-onshore, making it choppy. Not the best.
Saturday and Sunday, August 22nd and 23rd, are a write-off. The swell drops right off, and the conditions are poor. Sunday morning does have a glassy 3ft wave from the N, but it’s short-period (6 seconds) and weak (73 energy), so you’re just bobbing around. The whole week from the 24th through the 26th is flat to tiny. Just a few tiny, glassy waves that won’t do much. You’re looking at a real quiet spell.
Now, things start to get interesting around Thursday, August 27th. The swell starts to build again, but Thursday afternoon sees a 8ft NW swell with a fresh cross-onshore wind, making it lumpy and messy. Not the one.
The standout is Friday morning, August 28th. This is the one to circle. We’ve got a 7ft NW groundswell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 960. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW, keeping the surface clean. The wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions,” and I’m feeling it. This is a solid, powerful swell with clean lines. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s pushing into intermediate territory, but the quality should be there. It’s an exposed spot, so it’ll catch all that energy. The crowds are marked as “sometimes”, so you might have some company, but it’s worth it.
The following Saturday morning, August 29th, is also a good option. A 5ft NW swell with glassy conditions from a light SE wind. The energy is moderate at 525, and it’s clean. This is a great follow-up session for those who missed Friday.
The rest of the run into September has a few more pulses. Monday, August 31st, morning has a massive 12ft WNW swell, but the wave comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s one for the experts only, and even then, it’s likely closing out. The wind is a cross-shore too, so it’s messy.
Then, on the 2nd of September, we get a clean 4ft NW swell with glassy conditions on Wednesday morning. A nice, small, clean wave for the beginners and longboarders.
The final big shout is Saturday morning, September 5th. A 6ft NW groundswell with glassy conditions. The energy is strong at 749. This is another very good option, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecasts. It’s promising.
So, to sum it up: Friday the 28th of August is the clear winner. Get on it. Saturday the 29th is a solid backup. The rest of the time, you’re either dealing with flat spells or messy, windy conditions.
Rusty out.
