The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for the only spot that’s even worth talking about this fortnight. There’s not much else on the menu, so let’s get straight into it.
The forecast period is a bit of a slow burner, with a few days of sloppy, marginal conditions before things start to shape up. The first real action worth paddling out for doesn’t kick off until Sunday morning, August 23rd. Before that, we’ve got weak, short-period swells and cross-shore breezes making a mess of things. Thursday and Friday are basically write-offs for anything decent.
Now, the standout window is later in the run, around Wednesday afternoon, August 26th, through that Friday morning, August 28th. There’s a pulse of solid swell energy coming in, with combined swell energy hitting 704 (moderate to strong) on the Wednesday afternoon. That’s the biggest push of the whole outlook. The swell is 8ft from the NW, with a short period of 7 seconds. That size is getting into expert-only territory, especially for a beach break – it’s going to be a beast. The wind on Wednesday afternoon is glassy, absolutely perfect conditions, so you’ll get clean, steep faces if you’ve got the skills. The following morning, Thursday 27th, sees the swell ease slightly to 7ft from the WNW, but with glassy offshore winds, it’ll still be clean and powerful. That’s a solid window for the crew who can handle it.
Heading into the end of the period, the last few days of August and into early September look promising too. Sunday morning, August 30th, has 4ft from the NW with glassy conditions – that’s a much more manageable size for the average surfer. The combined swell energy is moderate at 346. Then Monday 31st starts with 4ft, again glassy, and that trend continues into Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September with clean, glassy mornings and waist-to-chest high NW swell. The standout in this stretch is definitely Friday morning, September 4th – 5ft from the NW, glassy as it gets, and combined energy of 577. That’s a very good session, clean and fun.
Water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no need to stress about a wetsuit unless you’re sensitive.
One thing to remember – Cala De Meron is a fairly consistent spot, so even though the start is slow, it tends to bounce back. But if you’re looking for the best of the best, lock in that Wednesday to Friday window, and then the glassy mornings from the 30th onward. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so keep that in mind.
Alright, get out there and get wet.
