The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Cala De Meron over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. The first few days are a bit of a write-off for any proper surf. We’ve got some small, weak stuff around, but the conditions are just off. Friday afternoon the 21st sees a 5ft NW swell pushing in, but it’s got a cross-on breeze and it’s choppy – not your friend. The water’s sitting at 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only nice thing I can say about it.
Saturday morning on the 22nd drops off to a tiny 3ft, and the wind is all wrong. It stays poor through the weekend. Sunday morning the 23rd, we get a brief moment of glassy conditions with a 3ft N swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s just weak, ordinary waves – not worth paddling out for. The combined energy is a paltry 108 (very weak). Monday the 24th is glassy again but the swell is even smaller.
We hit a real dead zone from Tuesday the 25th right through to Wednesday the 27th. The swell drops to nothing, with energy readings in the teens and twenties. Honestly, unless you’ve got a kite, there’s nothing here for a surfer. The wind is light, but so is the ocean.
Then things start to change. The end of the week on Thursday the 27th sees a pulse of NW swell, hitting 7ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon. But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, and it’s choppy as hell. The energy is cranking up – 326 and 638 (strong to very strong) – but the quality is poor. It’s not a paddle day; that kind of setup with that much wind and size looks far more interesting for kite surfing than a proper surf.
Now, here’s the standout. The best of the whole outlook is the stretch from Friday the 28th of August through to Monday the 1st of September. Friday the 28th is a beauty: offshore winds, glassy conditions, and a clean 4ft to 5ft NW swell with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is strong (367 and 297). This is the one. Saturday the 29th morning is also glassy with a 4ft NW swell and 9-second period (371 energy). That’s your top pick. It’s a beginner-friendly swell size, and with that light wind, it’s going to be clean. This spot is fairly consistent, so you can bank on it. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
After that, Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st hold similar 4ft NW swells with glassy mornings, but the afternoons get a little cross-on. Still very surfable, but the mornings are your window.
The first week of September sees a drop-off. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd are small and ordinary. But then, mark your calendar. On Thursday the 3rd of September, we get a solid pulse of 6ft NW swell with a 7-second period, and it’s glassy in the morning. The energy is 394 (strong). That’s a bit bigger, getting into that intermediate territory, but if the wind holds, it’ll be a fun, punchy wave. Friday the 4th holds a cleaner 4ft NW swell.
The long-range end of the outlook fades out again. Saturday the 5th of September is back to small, clean, but weak surf.
So, bottom line: the best days are Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th of August. Clean, glassy, solid 4ft NW swell. Go get it. Don’t sleep on Thursday the 3rd of September either, but that’s a long way off and less certain.
Rusty.
