The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for your local patch. It’s a tough one to call, but I’ll walk you through what’s on the menu.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at a pretty quiet start. The next few days are a mixed bag of small, weak swell and tricky wind. Nothing truly worth getting wet for until we get deeper into the forecast.
Let’s start with the first real chance of a wave. Cala De Meron is the only break on the radar. On the morning of Wednesday, 22 July, we’ve got a tiny 4ft swell from the NNE, but the real magic is the wind. It’s dead glassy, calm as a pond. The wave energy is weak (133), so it’s not going to be firing, but that glassy surface will make it look a million times better than it is. The water is running warm at 71°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice surprise. This is a beginner-friendly spot, so if you’re learning or just want to paddle around in clean, small conditions, that’s your window.
The next morning, Thursday, 23 July, is similar. Glassy again with a tiny 3ft swell from the NNE. The energy is even weaker (61), but it’s clean. You’ll be skating on a lake, but the waves will be there.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Friday, 24 July, right through to the end of the month, the surf is mostly poor, with onshore winds, choppy conditions, and tiny swell. There are a few mornings with glassy conditions, like the 26th and 29th, but the swell is barely 3ft and the energy is in the dumps. It’s a real struggle for anything rideable.
The first real standout of the whole outlook comes much later, on the morning of Wednesday, 29 July. The wind is glassy again, and the swell is coming from the NNW with a 3ft height, but the period jumps to 11 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The energy is moderate (264), and for the first time, the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” This is a long period swell, so it will have more shape and power, and it’s going to work best at a point or reef, but Cala De Meron is exposed to the NNW, so it could get a nice, clean line. This is your best bet in the entire 16-day window, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep your fingers crossed.
The afternoon of the 29th keeps the 3ft swell from the NNW with a 12-second period, but the wind turns cross-on, so the morning is the clear winner.
After that, the swell drops off again. The first few days of August are a wasteland of cross-shore winds and tiny, short-period slop. The 1st of August afternoon has a 4ft swell from the NE, but it’s a 5-second windswell with a moderate cross-chop – more of a mess than a wave.
Honestly, if you’re a kite surfer, the windy afternoons in late July might look more interesting than the paddle surfing. The winds are strong and cross-onshore, which is no good for a clean wave, but perfect for a kite.
To sum it up: the 22nd morning is a clean, tiny beginner session. The real standout is the morning of Wednesday, 29 July, with a glassy, long-period groundswell from the NNW. Mark it on your calendar, but don’t book the day off work just yet. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
