The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag around here. The first week is mostly a write-off, with small, weak, and messy conditions. But if you’ve got patience, the second week has a couple of pulses that could be worth a look, especially for the more experienced crew.

Starting off, there’s pretty much nothing happening for the first few days. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are flat to tiny, with a bit of cross-onshore breeze making it choppy and uninviting. The water is unusually warm at 71°, almost 3° above normal, so it’s comfortable for a swim but not for surfing.

The first real chance of a wave comes on the morning of Tuesday the 22nd at Cala De Meron. The wind goes glassy, and there’s a 5 ft swell from the north-northeast, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s weak and a bit crumbly. The combined energy is only 184, so it’s not got much push. It’s surfable, but pretty ordinary – a beginner might get a few soft ones, but it’s nothing to get excited about.

Thursday the 23rd morning is glassy again, but the swell has dropped to just 3 ft, and the energy is a tiny 58. Not worth paddling out for.

Then we hit a long gap. From Friday the 24th right through to the morning of Monday the 27th, it’s all small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-shore. The morning of the 27th finally shows a pulse: 6 ft from the west-northwest with glassy conditions. The combined energy is 293, so it’s got some life, but the period is only 6 seconds, so it’s a short, choppy wind swell. It’s the best we’ve seen so far, but still not a standout.

Now, the real action – and the only true standout of this outlook – kicks off on the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. Cala De Meron sees a 7 ft swell from the northwest with a 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1333. That’s a strong, powerful groundswell. The wind is a light cross-shore from the east, so it should be clean. This is solid, expert-level stuff – 7 ft is big, and with that period, it’s going to have some punch. The optimum swell direction is NNW, so this NW swell is a little off-angle, but it’s still going to produce some serious waves. This is the pick of the period. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it won’t be a circus.

The afternoon of the 28th holds similar size at 7 ft from the northwest, with a period of 11 seconds and an even higher energy of 1406. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it’s still good. This is the best two-session window of the whole 16 days.

Wednesday the 29th morning is still solid, with 8 ft from the north-northwest and a 10-second period, and energy at 959. But the wind picks up a bit to a moderate cross-shore, so it’ll be a little more choppy. Still a good wave for experienced surfers.

After that, the swell drops off quickly. By Thursday the 30th, it’s back down to 5 ft and the energy is fading. The rest of the week into early August is small, weak, and mostly cross-onshore, with combined energy values under 200. The morning of Monday the 3rd of August is glassy, but the swell is only 2 ft – not enough to surf.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a near-total loss. The standout is definitely the morning and afternoon of Tuesday the 28th of July, with a strong, clean groundswell at Cala De Meron. The morning of the 29th is also good, but a bit windier. If you’re an experienced surfer, that’s your window. Beginners should sit this one out entirely.
