The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Cala De Meron has in store for the next couple of weeks.

First up, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow start. For the next week and a half, through to the end of July 24th, the surf is tiny and messy. We’re looking at swell heights barely hitting 2ft to 3ft with short, weak periods of 5–8 seconds. The combined energy is low, mostly under 100 and at best moderate around 206. The wind is all over the shop – onshore, cross-onshore, nothing that’s gonna make this place clean up. It’s basically a write-off for the paddle crew. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.

Now, there is a glimmer of hope, but you gotta be patient. The first real standout comes on Saturday, July 25th. The morning session is the pick. We get a glassy, offshore wind from the North at just 3 mph – that’s as clean as it gets. A small, long-period groundswell rolls in from the NW, 3ft with a beautiful 12-second period. The combined energy is 256, which is moderate. This is proper groundswell, so it’ll have shape and power for its size, and that long period means the sets will be spaced out, making it easier to get into position. This is the best on offer – clean, fun little waves for the beginner crew. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy as the wind shifts cross-onshore.

Then there’s Sunday, July 26th. Both the morning and afternoon sessions are glassy again, with tiny 3ft NW swell at 10 seconds. The combined energy drops a bit to 177–169. The waves are there, but they’re pretty ordinary. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.

We do get a little more size towards the end of the period. Monday, July 28th morning sees a jump to 5ft from the NW at 10 seconds, with strong combined energy of 566. But the wind is onshore, so it’s gonna be a messy, chunky affair – more of a challenge than a pleasure. That said, the Wednesday, July 29th morning looks promising again: glassy, 5ft NW swell at 10 seconds, combined energy strong at 389. The afternoon stays glassy with 4ft. That’s clean, solid surf – a great second standout for the expert riders who don’t mind a bit of power.

So, the long and short of it: the first ten days are a drought. The best windows are the mornings of July 25th and July 29th when the wind lays down and that long-period NW groundswell arrives. Don't expect much else.

Stay stoked, and keep your eyes on the horizon.

Rusty.
